Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (12:00 PM)

Going to get started a minute or two early. Busy day here in Charlotte with interviews beginning at 1230 with Kimi Raikkonen. If I slow down for a second to listen to what he's saying or post something on twitter don't fret. Hey, maybe I'll share what he's saying here. Have at it.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that Kimi Raikkonen will race in the Toyota Save Mart 350 at Sonoma & the Helvua Goods Dippings at the Glen this Season?

David Newton
  (12:01 PM)

I do. Think they are working on details as we speak. He'll be in the media center in 30 minutes and I'll ask.

Brad (Crossville, TN)

David, I ask Marty yesterday but he never got the answer to come through. Do you think Carl will resign with Jack before the end of the season since he is running so strong and the top contender to take the championship away from Johnson?

David Newton
  (12:01 PM)

I'd say it's 60-40, maybe a bit stronger that he re-signs. But don't underestimate the power of JGR.

Drew (Bloomington, Ind.)

Best weekend of the racing calendar coming up, David! Who you got for 1) the Indy 500, 2) the Coke 600 and 3) the Monaco Grand Prix?

David Newton
  (12:02 PM)

Penske or Ganassi car for Indy 500, Edwards for 600 and haven't given the Monaco a thought other than I'd like to be on the beach there.

Roscoe (Cali, not the dimwit from Chino)

Looked like there was good attendance at the NW race. So much for needing Cup drivers in NW to attract spectators. Your thoughts.

David Newton
  (12:03 PM)

I've always said that fans will come regardless of whether the Cup drivers are there or not. I think too much is made over this issue. What I like about the NW series is it's about winning more than the championship. That's why I don't mind Cup drivers in there as much as most.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

How Many Women Competed in the Coca-Cola 600?

David Newton
  (12:04 PM)

In history? Know Janet Guthridge. I can't remember any of the other suspects being in it, but I may be wrong.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Even though you Cover NASCAR, Who do you think will win the 100th Anniversary Indianapolis 500?

David Newton
  (12:04 PM)

OK, you guys want to nail me down. I will go Will Power.

jesse (iowa)

hey newt. what did u think about the all-star race. i thought it was rather dull for an all star race. i thought the showdown was more exciting. did probation and nascar saying that they would possible take points away for an issue durring the race cause the dullness? your thoughts

David Newton
  (12:06 PM)

I don't think probation had as much to do with the lack of excitement as much as Carl Edwards had a dominant car. As Carl said, you can't have three-wide racing to the checkered every race. I am in favor of shortening the event, though.

jesse (iowa)

another great nationwide iowa speedway race. its about time for a cup race there. its a great facility with the stands always full. the cup series needs iowa as much as iowa needs them

David Newton
  (12:06 PM)

My guess is Iowa is next on NASCAR's radar for a Cup event. If attendance doesn't pick up at Dover it could be in jeopardy.

Lee (atlanta, ga)

128 mph!? wow, is this some of that new found maturity that shrub has attained or was it because he saw Harvick chasing him and he didnt have enough guts to get out of the car?

David Newton
  (12:07 PM)

I'm going to say this once. While I admit a lot of jokes such as this are funny, to joke about it gives the impression it's OK. I don't think it is. So I'm not going to joke about it.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that the Official Announcement of Danica Patrick Racing in NASCAR full-time in 2012 will come in Chicagoland since she is scheduled to race in the STP 300?

David Newton
  (12:08 PM)

Could be. My guess is she'll be in a Stewart-Haas car. I'm hearing JR Motorsports isn't interested in moving to Cup.

Dustin (Knoxville)

David, why don't they attempt to use restrictor plates on the cookie cutter tracks like California, Michigan, Charlotte and so on? Seems to me, the racing is rather stagnet and boring at these types of tracks. Thanks!

David Newton
  (12:08 PM)

Speeds aren't so out of control that they need plates there.

mike (dallas)

I'm sure i will get a lot of flack for this, here goes.Danica was a good story when she first started out not anymore.Very overrated, she's just average in open wheel, lot worse in nationwide. It's kind of like junior having a good year this year is it him or crew chief or does he need to be pampered to win, since he never seemed to communicate with the crew chief in the past. They deserve each other

David Newton
  (12:10 PM)

Junior is having a good year first because he's a better driver than most give him credit, second because he's regained confidence and third because he truly has developed a trust and great relationship with Letarte.

Ray (CT)

So I'm curious about this speeding thing. Was it New Kyle or Old Kyle that was doing 128 in a 45?

David Newton
  (12:11 PM)

The Too Fast Kyle.

Rick ma [via mobile]

David the 42 team has plain out stunk in recent weeks and without a top 10 or better sunday i think the chase is outta the question. They have the ecr power, is it chasis issues or something else?

David Newton
  (12:12 PM)

All I know is Juan Pablo Montoya isn't happy with the way things are going, which isn't good in a contract year.

Greg (North Carolina)

Hi David - thanks for the chat! Do you agree with Charlotte Observer columnist Scott Fowler that Kyle Busch should be suspended from racing for at least one weekend for exceeding the speed limit by 83mph on a public roadway? If not, how do you think he should be penalized, if at all?

David Newton
  (12:14 PM)

Suspended might be harsh. I'd say fine him, make him participate in a program such as B.R.A.K.E.S where he could teach kids the dangers of speeding. Suspending to me would be too strong.

Greg (North Carolina)

If Rowdy is held out of the 600 this weekend, how do you think that would affect his championship chances?

David Newton
  (12:14 PM)

He won't be, and it wouldn't impact his chances of winning the title. He'd still make the Chase.

Kevin Harvick (Charlotte, NC)

Kyle got caught doing 128 mph? Looks like he's still scared of me catching up with him from Darlington.

David Newton
  (12:15 PM)

Focus on serving me a Budweiser at the event you have downtown tomorrow night.

Tim (El Cajon, CA)

128 in a 45? REALLY?! And I thought Kyle had started to grow up and mature. I was actually starting to think he may be ok. Now he is back at to being an immature little brat in my book and has to start mending his ways again. Speeding is one thing, but come on!

David Newton
  (12:16 PM)

He made a mistake. I don't think it makes him a punk. Yes, it was ridiculous. But we all do immature things, even at much older ages than Kyle.

PJ (Cary, NC)

Hey Newt, Gordon and Gus have been terrible so far in 2011 at the intermediate racetracks and said a few weeks ago they've been working hard on that program. I was at the All-Star race and they actually had a competitive car. My 30th birthday is Saturday and I'll be at the 600. As a die-hard Gordon fan, do I have any chance of seeing the 24 in Victory Lane Sunday?

David Newton
  (12:17 PM)

Gordon always has been good at Charlotte. I'd put him among my top five picks.

Allison (MI)

Thank you for pointing out how dangerous it really was for Kyle Busch to be going that speed on a residential road. The people that are defending Kyle like it was no big deal really need to read this. Thank the Lord that no one was hurt but I'm afraid the only way Kyle will learn is when something really bad happens to him or someone he cares about.

David Newton
  (12:17 PM)

Thanks. I appreciate your comments.

Kevin (Ohio)

Newt, I respect your opinion and I am far from a Kyle fan but I think you are stretching in your story that he should be on probation for this. Let the County handle his penalty. I doubt ESPN would put you on probation for reckless operation of a vehicle, nor would most employers unless it affected their insurance rates. In addition, what the heck would putting him on probation do anyway? If JGR wants to discipline him that is their business but NASCAR needs to stay out of these guys private lives. The incident with Harvick I can see because of where it happened, but this was not at a NASCAR event. They need to get over themselves already. Worry about what happens at the track.

David Newton
  (12:18 PM)

ESPN has placed talent on probation or even suspended for saying something wrong on the air, so I can imagine if something like this happened and with the public scrutiny they might take some action.

Brad (Crossville, TN)

David, with Carl running as strong as he is, do you see him signing with Jack before the end of the year?

David Newton
  (12:19 PM)

If he doesn't it might put his championship hopes in jeopardy. Can't imagine Jack would be happy if Carl hung him out to dry over the final 10 races.

Ron (Manassas, VA)

How do you think Stenhouse will do in his debut... top 25 too much to ask? He comes from sprint car background so he may like the cup car and the increased horsepower better than the NW cars.

David Newton
  (12:20 PM)

He'll have solid equipment and he has talent, so I suspect a top 20 isn't stretching it, although 600 miles will test his concentration.

Rick (Parts Unknown)

What is going on with T. Bayne. What is the matter with him.

David Newton
  (12:20 PM)

He'll return next weekend at Chicagoland in the Nationwide Series. His symptoms have disappeared, but no one has said exactly what was wrong. He'll talk to us at 1 today. I'll know more then.

Joe (NC)

I dont understand the deal with Hendrick Motorsports. They always seem like they cater to Jimmie. Jeff Gordon made Hendrick what they are today, yet he gets moved to other shop. That seems like a slap in the face. Jimmie also justs hits Jeff like he is not even a teammate - All last year..Talladega, Texas, etc.

David Newton
  (12:21 PM)

Hendrick made the swap to improve the entire organization. I believe it has succeed. Jeff doesn't take it as a slap. You shouldn't either.

Rick (Buffalo, NY)

Do you believe Danica will stay under the Hendrick umbrella if she does indeed come over full time next year? JRM for NW and maybe SHR for cup the following year?

David Newton
  (12:22 PM)

I do. Your scenario could work.

Bob T. (Winston-Salem, NC)

What do you think of T. Wayne Robertson's chances of making the Hall of Fame in the next year or two? Without him bringing in NASCAR's first title sponsor, Winston, who knows where the sport would have gone.

David Newton
  (12:23 PM)

You make a good point, but at this point I believe the focus will be on some of the older drivers. Cale Yarborough and DW should top next year's class.

Ron (MD)

David, Great article on the need for some sort of response from NASCAR regarding the KB speeding incident. I too felt like no big deal until I read your article. I now believe there should be some kind of action by NASCAR. Now my question, has there been any official release as to what has been keeping Trevor from racing? Seems like everyone is very quiet about what the illness is/was.

David Newton
  (12:23 PM)

Thanks on the article. I'm told on Trevor that they never were able to make a conclusive diagnosis. Maybe he'll enlighten us at 1.

Tony (Concord, NC )

David I read your article about Kyle Busch and I'm disappointed NASCAR isn't going to do anything about this. First the Michael Annette DUI and now this. I don't think it sends a very positive message about the sport. I mean NBA guys are getting slapped with 100k fines for using anti-gay slurs. Does NASCAR even care about their image?

David Newton
  (12:24 PM)

Glad you brought up other sports. May be time for NASCAR to add a code of conduct clause, although I believe detrimental to stock car racing should cover it.

Bob T. (Winston-Salem, NC)

The talk of Raikkonen being "the best driver in the world" makes me wonder... who do you think is the most talented driver in the world right now?

David Newton
  (12:25 PM)

In a stock car I'd say Edwards or Johnson. In all kinds of cars it's hard to say. All I know is Juan Pablo Montoya was considered one of the best in the world until he got to NASACR and he's been decent, but not great.

Eddie (Ft. Lauderdale)

This is from your March 16 chat: "As for NW and Truck Series, I'm not sure we'll see a non-Cup driver win in NW all season, and perhaps not even in Trucks although Sadler and Hornaday could prove me wrong." Have you dined on crow yet this week, Mr. Newton? ;)

David Newton
  (12:26 PM)

Glad I was wrong. I thought if it was going to happen Iowa might have been the track because ther ewere so few Cup drivers in there.

jesse (iowa)

alot of people say kyle busch is the new restart king but did you see some of brad keslowskis in the showdown? i think his are as goood if not a little better

David Newton
  (12:27 PM)

Brad's move was impressive. But he needs to show it consistently over time to rank with KB.

Ray (alabama )

Are we certain is Stewart-Haas or is it another surprise team? What about Harvick nationwide team?

David Newton
  (12:29 PM)

Danica told me in December she wanted to stay with a Hendrick team. Her people have indicated Stewart-Haas is the best alternative. We'll see.

Vinnie (ATL)

As an F1 fan as well as NASCAR, I can assure you Kimi will not say anything interesting.

David Newton
  (12:30 PM)

He's in here boring us now.

Ron (MD)

David, Did you attend the Hall of Fame Induciton? If so, what was the best part in your eyes?

David Newton
  (12:30 PM)

David Pearson thanking all the pretty ladys for escorting him around and then saying, "I might want to work here." Priceless.

Cletus (Apex, NC) [via mobile]

Great article on Busch's recent episode Newt. Having said that, the 43 drivers on sunday know what their getting into when the strap into the seat at the track. So isn't this just another example of NASCAR's sometimes yes sometimes no enforcement of their rules? Thanks

David Newton
  (12:31 PM)

You could say that.

George (NY, NY)

I know Kimi came over with the intention of trying Nascar in the best equipment possible and you can't say that is the #87 NW car or even the Robby's cup car that he wrecked, do you think he is making a mistake by rushing and not being assured of top flight equipment?

David Newton
  (12:32 PM)

I will all but guarantee that Kyle's people and maybe even JGR and Toyota put a little into making the 87 stronger than normal.

Rick (Buffalo, NY)

Is Raikkonen going to get a decent ride for Somoma if he decides to make his cup debut? Seems he would have enough sponsor backing to get decent equipment... maybe a 4th JGR car or 3rd Red Bull?

David Newton
  (12:34 PM)

He was just saying "it would be nice" to drive at Sonoma. With his financial backing I believe he'll have a decent ride. Could be Nemechek again because he fields Toyotas in Cup as well.

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

David, hope you are doing well. It's summer humid down here in Central FLA. Two questions:1. If Edwards/Ragan leaves, do you think Bowyer would come over to Roush?2. With Roush having Bayne/Stenhouse signed, and RPM at 2 cars do you think one or both could end up over their?

David Newton
  (12:35 PM)

Humid here, too. As for Bowyer, Childress says they're working on re-signing him, but if Edwards were to leave and Bowyer could go from No. 3 driver at RCR with an iffy sponsor to a solid 2 at Roush with a solid sponsor I could see him making the move. But he seems like such a good fit for RCR I don't see it happening.

Rick (Buffalo, NY)

Can Kimi bring in enough sponsorship dollars to run cup next year in good equipment with an owner knowing he will surely tear up a lot of cars getting up to speed?

David Newton
  (12:36 PM)

The guy has more money than I'll ever dream of seeing, so yes. He already brought Perky Jerky more exposure than anyone imagined.

Greg (North Carolina)

When will we see Clint Bowyer climb back into victory lane?

David Newton
  (12:36 PM)

Soon I believe. Maybe this weekend. He's too good not to win one or two a year.

Vinnie (ATL)

Bump day at Indy was the most exciting ever! I feel for Michael Andretti and Ryan even though Michael bought Ryan in the 500.

David Newton
  (12:37 PM)

It was exciting. Would love to add that element to NASCAR.

Tim (AZ)

I know Carl is running out of his mind, but lets not forget about the quiet man in the crown car. The 600 is his type of race, and he and Fennig are clicking it seems. Plus, remember Texas?

David Newton
  (12:37 PM)

You're right on with that. I never overlook Kenseth. He has something Carl doesn't, a title.

Greg (North Carolina)

What do you think is an ideal penalty for Kyle Busch's behavior on the public roadway?

David Newton
  (12:38 PM)

As I said earlier, a hefty fine and mandatory assignment to work with a program like BRAKES to warn kids of the dangers of driving too fast.

Eddie (Ft. Lauderdale)

Newt, who at NASCAR did you have to pay to get your glamour shot on their home page the other day?

David Newton
  (12:40 PM)

You are referring to the NASCAR.com picture, my buddy DC from the site has been screaming about that.

George (New York, NY)

If Kimi does come full time, do you see RPM making a run at him? They have RFR cars and engines with a money man who wants to expand to 4 cars asap. He should be able to secure sponorship as well

David Newton
  (12:41 PM)

I doubt that. I would imagine Red Bull or JGR would be the top candidates.

Red (NC)

How is it that a driver like Danica, who really has done little on the track to merit the attention she receives, gets to say something like she wants to remain in the Hendrick family? People all across the country that pour their hearts and souls (not to mention bank accounts) into their racing must be tearing their hair out with those types of statements. I mean, basically thats a average at best racer saying she demands to get the best equipment is it not?

David Newton
  (12:42 PM)

Because she is a high profile female driver and the sport desperately wants a female to succeed. To put her in some startup team and not succeed would defeat the purpose. Plus she brings sponsorship with GoDaddy.com that other drivers don't have. That means the world in this sport.

Ron (MD)

David, How glad are you to be around home to cover a race. Sounds like you drive to many events...is that so? What is the farthest you have driven to cover an event

David Newton
  (12:43 PM)

It is nice to be at home for two weeks, although there's so much going on I don't get to spend a lot of time there. The furthest would be last year when I flew to Denver for an event with my wife and son and then drove to Sonoma for that race. The furthest from home would be Daytona.

Vinnie (ATL)

JPM was not considered one of the best F1 drivers. Ask Kimi.

David Newton
  (12:43 PM)

Just missed my chance. Will as Juan later.

Jim (Statesvile)

David, if you remember Kurt was busted for reckless driving in AZ. NASCAR parked him the last 2 races of the year and Roush fired him...

David Newton
  (12:44 PM)

Actually, Roush parked Kurt. It had more to do with the fact Kurt was leaving for Penske Racing.

Wayne (Tampa, FL)

Do you think Red Bull would put Kimi in the #4 full time next year if they can't attract a big name free agent so they aren't forced to rush Witt up too early?

David Newton
  (12:45 PM)

How about this for a lineup? Kimi in the 83 and Mark Martin splitting time with Cole Whitt in the 4?

Vinnie (ATL)

I love all racing, but the open wheel driver to NASCAR is getting old. I would love to see Carl or Jimmie in an F1 car. They would be middling at best.

David Newton
  (12:46 PM)

Gordon and I think Johnson have gottenin an F1 car before. It's definitely a big transition.

Bob T. (Winston-Salem, NC)

Think Ricky Rudd will ever be a Hall of Famer? He was one of NASCAR's 50 greatest drivers, but never a champion and mainly memorable for winning a race or two every year for a couple decades.

David Newton
  (12:46 PM)

If he is, it will be many years before it happens. It would be a hard sell in my opinion.

Keith H (Seattle)

Good morning, David. I have a question about the car Kyle was driving for the ticket. All the espn story said was a "factory Lexus." Was it some type of new car they wanted him to test? (Lexus being part of Toyota.)

David Newton
  (12:47 PM)

It was a sports car, the equivalent of F1 power I am told.

guy holloway (Laredo tx.)

I guess Nascar isn't going to do anything to kyle busch. what a shame. I swear if he would of hit any of my family members there would be hell to pay.

David Newton
  (12:47 PM)

My son was pulled for going 92 a year ago and it was hell for him. Thanks.

Greg (North Carolina)

In light of the Kyle Busch speeding/reckless incident, do you think NASCAR should require that drivers have valid state-issued licenses to be able to compete? It would encourage good behavior on public roads as well.

David Newton
  (12:48 PM)

That would make them think twice about breaking the law. I like that idea.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that Danica Patrick will sign with Stewart-Haas Racing & race in the Sprint Cup Series full-time in 2012?

David Newton
  (12:48 PM)

That is what I am hearing, although I also am hearing she may try a full NW schedule with limited Cup next year. We'll see.

mike (n y)

From what i have seen its alot harder to drive a stock car instead of a open wheel like a f1 or ndy car. What do the drivrs say llike stewart about that?

David Newton
  (12:50 PM)

JPM says this is the toughest racing he's been a part of. He's done it all, so I'll trust him.

Steve (PA)

When Stewart assaulted the promoter in Australia with a weapon NASCAR didn't do anything and that was way more serious than what Rowdy did so why doesn't NASCAR stay out Kyle's deal?

David Newton
  (12:50 PM)

I don't believe charges ever were filed in that case, but I see your point.

Wayne (Tampa, FL)

Saw Villenue will be in Brads NW car for road races, with a top notch car do you think he can finally win one? The last couple years the Braun cars were not on par with Penske equipment

David Newton
  (12:51 PM)

I'd say his stock just rose.

Rick (Denton, TX)

Also, since Denny tweeted a pic of that Lexus LFA with the comment to move over on the highway do you think Kyle might have been set up?

David Newton
  (12:52 PM)

Nope. And you might check Denny's driving record at the highway department.

Ray (alabama )

If we did have indy style bump day in nascar and dale jr and kyle busch were surprisingly bump; do you think hendrick or jgr will buy a car to put them in the show?

David Newton
  (12:53 PM)

Why not? Michael Waltrip has done it a few times, I know for sure here at Charlotte once.

John (Illinois)

I think that it's sad that Jr. will propbably be the only driver to be win the fan vote from now on, as long as he's driving and not winning. It will really wreck the spirit of the fan vote, if the same guy gets it every year.

David Newton
  (12:54 PM)

Hey, you can start a campaign for somebody else. It's a free country, but you're probably right. I just don't think it will wreck the spirit of the vote.

Vinnie (ATL)

Do you think the NASCAR HOF should have enshrined 25 or so people in its inaugural year to avoid some of the controversy over who should and shouldn't be in over the initial years? Some of the newer HOFs did this (college basketball).

David Newton
  (12:55 PM)

No, 25 would have been too many. But I would like to see a special spot for one of the legenda severy year.

Steve (PA)

Is Jeff gordon one of the Nascar greats?

David Newton
  (12:55 PM)

Hell yes.

Emily (NJ)

David, I was just curious as to why the Charlotte track is closed on Friday before the 600 with activity starting Thursday?

David Newton
  (12:56 PM)

Just the way they do it here because they do pole night on Thursday.

David Newton
  (12:56 PM)

Sorry I have to bug out. Trevor Bayne is on the way to the media center and then the anticipated Kyle Busch pressure. Enjoy the Memorial Day Weekend.
