Hey everyone! The WSOP Grudge matches are about to kick off and the 5K is a huge event. Send in your questions and we'll talk about everything here from the WSOP.
Hi Andrew, Really excited about ESPN's coverage this year, It's going to be immense. I'm sure the talk will be dominated by Ivey/FTP but as a UK based player I wonder how you rate the new Brit Pack's (Sam Trickett, Jake Cody, Toby Lewis et al) chances this year? They've dominated over here!
Hi Jack! Glad to hear that you're excited. I am too and today really is going to kick things off for ESPN and our coverage. Jake Cody is one of the eight remaining in he $25K Heads-Up World Championship and is looking for his first WSOP bracelet. Not a bad start for him and the Brits this summer.
In the best case scenerio when do you see online poker legal and regulated in the US?
Best case scenario, fully up and running, legalized and regulated federally, I'm going to go with late 2012. Yes, that's my best case. Once bills are approved then there's framework that needs to be put in place and a whole lot of development on all levels.
Do you think any of the Grudge Match Players are upset that their matches are interfering with the 5k. Sounds like it would be a great chance for Seidel/Chan/Helmuth to add to their bracelet count.
Yes, but I think Seidel, Chan and Hellmuth will end up playing the event anyway. They can late reg for a couple more hours. Might be toughest for Seidel and Chan, but I'm sure given the massive field size, they'll do what they can do get in. That said, Seidel still has chips in Event 3...not a lot of them, but still
Does the WSOP have so many different headlines this year that not even the great Kevmath can make heads or tails of it?
Kevmath says..."I can make heads or tails of anything." I'll say that the first week has made our initial WSOP Stories to Watch a bit of a joke. What a crazy few days.
Hi, Andrew. I have a two part question. Do you think online poker can recover from black friday, if so how long do you think a full recovery will take?
Joe, good question. I'm pretty concerned to be honest. As an example, think of this idea. Picture a restaurant crowded each night with 1000 people. They spend their money, but the establishment doesn't pay anything to the county despite their revenue. The county could either a) put in a quick tax, keep the place going and just take the money instantly or b) shut it down, make some new procedures, let it open again and eventually bring in some money. If they shut it down, only 15% of the clientele will return. That's kind of how I feel this all went down. For the entire poker-playing population to return and reach a full recovery, it's going to take an incredible marketing effort ... whenever that may be possible.
We know Guy's announcement today is WSOP related. Know anything else?
Yes, its rather interesting. You'll find out in a few hours and for immediate discussion of it, follow me on Twitter @ESPN_Poker.
It's June, and that means my favorite time of the year at ESPN - the daily Feldman chats!
Okay man time to answer my question this time. What event are you most excited for and why? Any bold predictions for bracelet snags?
The $2,500 10-game mix is probably the event I'm looking forward to most (besides the big guns - main event and 50K). There are games in there that its a guarantee that players in entire field won't know how to play! It's going to be quite an interesting event and I'm happy to see the WSOP take it in that direction.
Andrew, why is Ivey boycotting?
He's not boycotting the WSOP, he's opting not to play and his reasoning, according to his website, is that he doesn't feel that he should play when there are people out there who can not.
With Ivey not playing the WSOP, what will he be doing this summer? Since I'm a betting man, I'll go with ... Cash games. Is that HORSE bet with Dwan still live? If not the Aria or the Bellagio will have the action.
I heard this morning he's out of the country already. Maybe back to Macau for more cash games?
I'm confused, DNegs has harped on how great the WSOP 25k HU structure is, then your blog today suggests it caused Dwan v. Hansen to become a shot off. Which is it?
It really got to be a crapshoot last night, which I feel an event of the $25K caliber shouldn't be. I mean, his add-on was five big blinds. That's crazy. Sure, they could've played faster, but I think it just got out of hand late last night in their match. They were both laughing when the tournament director told them the blinds were going to 20K/40K.
I'm curious what patches are taking the place of online sites on American players? Any really, really creative sponsorships?
We're going to see the subscription sites step up their game, but no, nothing new or exciting on that front.
Looking forward to some poker coverage from ESPN today. Poker action needs to outlive the drama of the online poker. Feld, good keeping in perspective. No enough of buttering you up. How much prop betting is going on with durrr this year? He is playing just about everything isn't he?
A bracelet would be highly profitable for Durrrr this year. No exact amount available though, sorry.
You have a pretty good fantasy team. Did you think NOT having Ivey would be such a huge advantage? Who are some good sleepers?
I honestly didn't want the 1 or 2 spots thinking it would go Ivey, Seidel. I felt there's a lot of risk in those two and was relatively happy to snag Mercier at 7. I still think there are a couple good guys to grab and I'm really contemplating dropping Oppenheim to pick one of them up. Bryn Kenney is on my list, along with David Williams and a couple others...not sure who I'm going to go with, but I should make the move soon.
Still working on the Juanda drama? Juanda's got a good reputation, I'm really curious as to what that was about.
He's running away from the public anytime he can. At a break yesterday he bolted into the back hallways of the Rio, not responding to basically anything. Still working on it, but more people believe it is NOT 4/15 related.
Who's idea was it to schedule an 8 game mixed event the day before, the day of, and the day after 3 different types of non-holdem events. What type of player would prefer to play the 8 game mixed event? Don't players prefer to play the game they are most comfortable with?
Smaller fields = better chance to win a bracelet. All the no-limit fields are going to be huge and if they are good at a couple of the mixed games, why not give it a shot.
Have you been able to speak with Phil Gordon about the Full Tilt fiasco? He has to be embarrassed, no?
Spoke to him an hour ago. He's in the same boat as many of the other red pros who are just upset about the entire situation.
It looks like Joe Sebok is on his way to the WSOP. Do you think there will be any problems between him and the geek-squad aka 2+2 nation?
Really, what can Joe do at this point? He knows what he's going to face, but I'd think, and hope, that things will be smooth. There is extra security at the Rio though this year for those reasons.
What are the chances the WSOP would ever offer a bracelet event with a relatively low buy-in ($1,000 or $1,500) with a deep stack and slow structure ? Just one of these per WSOP may draw a huge field. Any chance?
I think the structures this year for the 1K and 1.5Ks are actually pretty great. You're never going to get a super-slow structure as they do need the field to play down quickly, but given the situation, I think the WSOP team here has done a great job.
Have you tried the new Smoothie Bar? Is it tasty? Healthy?
I just found out about it. Will be there shortly.
Do you find yourself rooting for the other Andrew Feldman? Are you two friends? Do you have Andrew Feldman exclusive parties?
Haha. I've actually always wondered what it would be like to write "Andrew Feldman wins bracelet" and have it not be me. Could be cool, but at the same time, a kick in the face. We've spoken for a moment or two in the past, but nothing more than that.
Do you suspect there will be a jump in WSOP-C entries next year. Seems like a great way to try to earn a bracelet. Plus get some TV exposure
I actually do. I think many people at the Rio realized just what they missed last season with the $1 million freeroll and the bracelet. If the WSOP is proactive about getting the word out, the WSOPC can do great.
New podcast up everyone: http://es.pn/mqwHBV
Any thoughts on how a good player can generate enough funds to play in the larger events? Now without online satelites it seems like a very daunting task.
Now they've gotta turn to the live game if they want to keep up their bankroll...or move abroad.
Ok everyone, I've gotta get to the set for all the ESPN3.com coverage. Don't forget that you can watch the Grudge Matches live on ESPN3.com, kicking off in 20 minutes. See you all tomorrow!
