Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (11:58 AM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to the weekly boxing chat. Big weekend with the Froch-Johnson Super Six semifinal on Showtime. I'm headed to the fight tomorrow. Also have the HBO show with Zbik-Chavez. So we have plenty to discuss. The big new notebook is up and a feature on Froch-Johnson should be up shortly. Blogs, news and other stories from the week also are up. So let's get to it!

Rommel (Alameda)

What came to your mind seeing Mosley wanting to quit in the fight on Showtime's Fight Camp 360 clip?

Dan Rafael
  (11:58 AM)

Wish they would have stopped it and saved us all from two more terrible rounds.

Jean Pascal (Quebec)

Marathon chats and verified status? Seriously Dan, you need to TAKE THE TEST!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

Verified on Twitter now so you KNOW it's me you are following @danrafaelespn!!!

MacDaddy (Philly)

Superfly, Am I crazy for thinking Johnson's toughness and ability to wade forward will give Froch more issue than he expects? Glenn isn't shy about throwing even when he is getting hit.

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

I don't disagree with that, which is why many expect it to be a very good fight. Both guys throw and both guys do get hit and both guys have always displayed very good chins. Should be a really good fight.

Carnell (Washington,DC)

Although Judah accepted an unfavorable split for the Khan fight, how much more than Bradley does he stand to make?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

He won't make more than Bradley would have. He will make less. BUT he is fighting and will actually earn a check while Bradley sits and makes zero this summer.

Joe (LBC)

D$, which promoters/managers do you think are the most effective at bringing along young and unproven talent?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Hands down, Top Rank is the best at bringing up young fighters from the amateurs to world champion status. It's not even close.

Kevin (LA)

Dan, I'm in court today, can you keep the chat going until 7pm pacific?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

No, sorry.

Jimmy (New York)

If/When Andre Ward wins the Super Six whats next for him? Bute is signed with Showtime( Plus won't beat Ward anyway) so who is a big fight for Ward?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Ward-Bute IS a big fight and could very well happen if Ward wins the tournament and Bute wins his mandatory in July and then a fall fight (probably with Pavlik or Kessler).

Chris (New York)

Dan, have you gotten any comments from Berto after his tweets? Very disappointing that he would go there. It was a great fight, they both battled, and he lost. Move on and take the L like a man.

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Yes, Andre direct messaged me last night on Twitter and we had a good conversation about what he tweeted and the column I wrote. I understand where he was coming from even if I don't agree with his method and I think he understood my point as well. One thing we do agree on, having nothing to do specifically with his fight against Ortiz, is that boxing in general, especially at the elite championship level, needs stricter testing than it has now. So although I was a bit harsh on Berto in my column I still like him and respect him as a fighter and person. Just a big disagreement over the way he went about things.

Dan Rafael

Clay (Chattanooga)

D-Raf, let's get right to it! what are the official picks for Froch-Johnson & Chavez Jr.-Zbik?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

I am going with Froch by decision in the Super Six fight. I am really having a hard time with the Chavez fight. I have no real feel for it although I have seen tons of Chavez fights and probably five Zbik fights. I'm going to go out on a limb and go with Chavez by a decision or a late knockout.

John (AZ)

When do tickets go on sale for the Khan/Judah fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

A few people asked this so I emailed Golden Boy and Main Events. Just got a Bat Email back from Golden Boy, so here is the answer: Prices are $400, $300, $200, $100 & $50. The exact date for them going on sale is not yet set. They were originally going to go on sale this coming Wednesday, but most likely that will be pushed back a couple of days. So probably late next week.

Peter (Philadelphia)

Any chance the Khan-Judah fight will end up at MSG/AC/Newark? I just can't see a fight in Vegas drawing a packed house? We've seen how putting a fight in the right location (ie.Montreal) adds so much excitement vs. putting it in the wrong location (ie.Pontiac Silverdome)

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

None whatsoever. The fight is at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

Emmanuel Steward (Detroit, MI)

Dan, your Memorial Day BBQ went about how I thought it would. Thanks for inviting me.

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

I'm glad you could come.

Rommel (Alameda)

Do you know the exact figures of PAC-Mosley PPV?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

No, they have not been announced beyond Arum stating that it did at least 1.25 million buys.

Jordan (Matsue, Japan)

Can you recall any other fight where the fighter wanted to quit, but the trainer didn't let them?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Not off the top of my head, but it is not all that unusual.

Stevey ( caliFORNIA) [via mobile]

Robert Guerrero always gets screwed out of the big fights. Recently against Marquez and Khan. So who does he fight Maidana? War if if happens.

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Not true. Robert has had some good fights and he will get more in the future. He's an outstanding talent and his time come. He was never really going to get Marquez anyway. Maidana is his possible opponent for Aug. 6 on HBO. Check out my notebook for some details.

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Here is the link to my notebook: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/columns/story?columnist=rafael_dan&id=6621782

Leo (Charlotte, NC)

Great job this week Dan, But I think you were on something lol

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

High on life baby!!!

ROB (WASHINGTON DC)

Any idea on the licensing fee for Judah/Khan? I am trying to get an idea on how much Judah would be making.

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

HBO was going to pay $3 million for Khan-Bradley. I am not sure if they are paying the same thing for Khan-Judah. It could be slightly less, but that's the ballpark.

Ed (NYC)

Do you think either Froch or Johnson have a chance against Ward?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Certainly Froch would. Johnson can never be counted out, but I think Ward would be a terrible style matchup for the old man.

Brent (Cleveland)

If any Freak has not read Dan's BBQ blog, go read and prepare to laugh your a## off

Paul B (NY, NY)

Dan Francisco- I have been reading tons about Gennady Golovkin and have never seen him. From what you have seen is he a likely future champion at 160?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

He actually holds a crappy WBA belt, whatever that means these days. In any event, he makes good fights and is strong as hell. I have some tapes on him and also of his Olympic fights. He was an excellent amateur. To me, his biggest weakness is he is so inactive and has not really faced any quality opponents so far. He defends his title in a couple of weeks against Kassim Ouma.

Power Pellets (Las Vegas)

Have you got any crazy calls from Uncle Lou about your Berto story or does he understand your point?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Actually have not discussed it with Lou. Haven't spoken to him a couple of days, but I'll see him this weekend in AC for the Froch-Johnson fight.

Manstein (Haricoff)

I am boxing beginner but i know Bernard Hopkins is great. I heard that before fight with Antonio Tarver, Bernard Hopkins was helped by someone who helped Roy Jones to move heavyweight. Hopkins should move up to lightheavyweight and he needed help. Who is someone that help Bernard to move lightheavyweight as conserve good condition? Who is he or she?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

He worked with fitness guru Mackie Shilstone, who is one of the best in the business. He helped Michael Spinks go from light heavy to heavy. He worked with Riddick Bowe before the Holyfield fight (I think the first one) as well as Jones and Hopkins. But he has also worked with probably hundreds of other athletes, including tons of NFL players.

John (San Fran)

Dan was able to stay up until 3am eating cheesecake with b-hop while continuing to tweet photos and take mental notes for an article...I know people in Dan's camp and he wasn't just drinking Sprite and rocking out to Kiss, lol, #knowwhatimsayin...

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

LOL. Actually, when I was out with Hopkins after his win over Pascal, I was jotting down a couple of notes on a napkin at the table for that column. Seriously.

Bobby (New York)

Quick sidenote, Walsh is out as President. Thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

I'm ill and ticked off.

Big E-Dunk (Bakersfield, Ca)

Seth Mitchell is a BEAST!!! When does he fight again?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

First of all, settle down. Seth has a lot of potential. He's not there yet. He could open the HBO show on Aug. 6 under Guerrero.

Ed (NYC)

What realistic fights are out there for Sergio Martinez right now?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Unfortunately, there are not a lot of big names at middleweight. If he fights in October as expected, you're looking at possible opponents such as Zbik (if he beats Chavez), maybe a Peter Quillin, maybe a Manfredo. I'd love to see him fight Daniel Geale, for example. I think that would be a solid fight.

Andre Berto (Winter Park, FL)

#WHINING

Scott (LA)

Hey Dan, big fan and got on twitter just to follow you. Is this FINALLY a legit test for Chavez Jr?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Thanks. Yes, this is a real test for Chavez, or at least it is supposed to be.

John (Austin)

Is Crappy WBA belt a new title that they just created?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

For a small sanctioning fee, of course. You can be the WBA super champ, regular champ, interim champ or crappy champ.

Clint (DC)

Any chance of Matinez-Hopkins? Or is that just Chris Mannix' fantasy?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Fantasy from my boy.

Jon G. (Las Vegas)

Hey dan, I went to court with my buddy yesterday to close his case and as we were waiting to get called up, I heard "Floyd Mayweather Case blah blah blah" and the I remembered that june 2nd was his court date. He wasnt there but his Some old lady that i'm assuming is his lawyer. I just thought I'd share that random story with you.

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Lovely.

Bubba Gage (Ottawa il)

Dan, When i seen the Fight Camp 360 video of mosley i felt bad for him. To hear him say "I cant move" to me was just sad. Father Time is undefeated.

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Agreed.

Ryan (NYC)

Dan - I happened to sit right next to Sechew Powell a few weeks back at a Tribeca Film Fest viewing of "Klitschko" (awesome flick, btw). Sechew seems really nice and down to earth, looking forward to his rematch with K9. Is that fight really taking a back seat to RAY AUSTIN (??) on the HBO tripleheader? If so, bummer.

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Sechew is a good dude. That fight is taking a backseat. I'd personally rather see that on TV than anything with Ray Austin in it. Period.

Paul B (NY, NY)

BBQ Chat, Halloween Chat, Haiku Chat, #Winning Chat. Who else at ESPN can offer that kind of variety and creativity in a chat? Perhaps Bill Simmons should take notes.

Jose Sulaiman (WBC)

We actually hold all rights to any titles deemed crappy.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

Any idea on what kind of crowd they are expecting to have at the Staples Center?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Top Rank told me they have Staples scaled for about 10,000 and figure the crowd will be a little bit less, maybe 8,000 or 9,000.

Farrel (Nj)

Hey Dan, what do you think of the Wolak vs Delvin fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Really good fight, especially for ESPN2. Can't miss action and two good guys.

Clay (Chattanooga)

D-Raf, i know you're a straight shooter! tell what you truly think of the possibility of TR & GBP actually working together is?!! I know ppl have said there stances with each other have softened, but what do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

They will almost certainly work together in the future if a fight makes sense now that they have worked out some issues with the mediator. The settlement with Pacquiao and the aplogy is a huge part of that. They won't be best buddies -- and they don't need to be -- but I think if it makes business sense they will do some fights together.

Chris (Los Angeles, CA)

Does Isaiah have naked pictures of James Dolan?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Please, I am ill enough.

Chris (Los Angeles, CA)

Did Golden Boy settling the defamation lawsuit signal that Manny had a really legit case and that the Mayweathers should now be really worried?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

When the judge allowed the case to go forward I think Golden Boy got a little spooked by it. Pacquiao has a very powerful lawyer working the case and Mayweather has said far worse things than Schaefer or De La Hoya said, so I think, as a laymen, that Mayweather and his family should be worried.

Jon G. (Las Vegas)

That Mythical BBQ was by far the most entertaining piece I've ever read I was so sad when it ended

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Thanks. Go back and read last years.

Anthony (Bronx, NY)

How dare they challenge you with their primitive skills.

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Exactly.

Twitter (Everywhere)

The only way Dan Rafael got verified was HE TOOK THE TEST!

Aaron (Cincinnati)

I think Maidana vs. Guerrero would be a great fight. Robert has the skill to frustrate the brawling Argentine but Maidana ALWAYS lands something big. Curious to see how it unfolds once Maidana gets going.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Exactly, and that is why it is a VERY interesting fight if it is made.

Bubba Gage (Ottawa il)

I wanna give a shoutout to ESPN for giving us a very solid FNF season this year......Very good cards.

Jon G. (Las Vegas)

Where Do I find last years?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

All of my blogs are archived.

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

By the way, here's the link to my Froch-Johnson story from today: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/columns/story?columnist=rafael_dan&id=6621797

Victor (north jersey)

Props to kathy duva as she put it "not sqabbling over minor things" and "if zab wins, there will be more money and bigger fights" if more promoters were like main events, boxing would be better off.

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Could not agree more. Kathy is a smart businesswoman and experienced. She understands the game and knows when she has leverage and doesn't. The attitude she and Zab took on this fight is refreshing.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

Some great cards for fight fans this summer. The card in St. Louis is loaded and the Khan-Judah card looks like it will be a good one too. Any chance Sadam Ali gets put on the Judah card ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

I would imagine Ali will wind up on that undercard, although nothing is set yet.

Twitter (Internet)

Now that we got you verified, where's our small sanctioning fee?

Andrew (Detroit MI)

Dan, You are always asking for proof that a fighter is dirty, DONT YOU THINK ITS TIME WE ASK FOR PROOF A FIGHTER IS CLEAN????

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

I am an American and I love our country and I believe in the basic premise that you are innocent until proven guilty. Period. Now, would I like their to be stricter tests in boxing (and all of sports)? YES. But until the powers that be implement them we are stuck with the current system. And despite that, I do not approve of tarnishing an athlete's reputation or accomplishments just because you THINK there may be something illegal going on. That's not the country I live in. And it is a shame some people think it is OK to just toss out damaging comments with nothing to back it up. That is what I believe and I won't ever change my mind on that.

Bubba Gage (Ottawa il)

Freak, Whats your feeling on were pac-marquez ends up? HBO or showtime? Please for the love of god bob go back to HBO. 24/7 please.

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

It is up in the air. Top Rank is talking to both sides (or will talk to both sides) and decide based on the best offer and best platform for exposure for their event. Showtime, with CBS, did bring something different to the table last time out. HBO knows it's going to have seriously step up its game. It will be interesting, but I have no inside knowledge of where Manny's next fight will be. I did find it interesting that Top Rank is running a poll on its website asking fans which network they would like to see Manny's next fight on and HBO is crushing Showtime by an 80-20 margin.

Jim (Santa Monica)

So.. Rachel Cordingly will not be sitting anywhere near the Showtime announcing crew this time right?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

I think that is a pretty good bet.

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Got a little more info on the Khan-Judah fight from Kathy Duva via the Bat Email: They are planning a Wednesday press conference in LA to announce the fight. She also said Judah and Khan are supposed to be in LA for the HBO card on Saturday and to do an interview on the telecast before the main event.

Alec (Nashville)

So Sergio Martinez could face Zbik if he defeats Chavez Jr. What if Chavez Jr. wins? Could he maybe face Sergio?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

I would be utterly shocked if Top Rank let Chavez anywhere near Martinez if he beats Zbik. No chance that fight happens IMO.

Andrew (NYC)

Is isiah thomas managed by al haymon???

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Brian (York)

DanCory Spinks next fight against Ashanti what weight will it be at?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

The bout sheet lists it as a junior middleweight fight, but I do not know the exact weight.

Victor Ortiz (Oxnard, CA)

Hey Dan I just finished my breakfast of spinach and Flintstones' chewables. Yummy!

Charles (Philly)

I'm hoping that ESPN3 will pick up the Helenius-Liakovich bout you reported on the other day. Should be interesting!

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

That would be a nice fight for ESPN3 to pick up. At this moment, that's not the plan as far as I know.

Bubba Gage (Ottawa il)

Want more proof boxing is alive and well? King Freak has over 17,000 followers on twitter and counting. And FYI, He tweets back as well.#Boxing

Gabe (Dallas)

Was the Nonito Donaire contract issue worked out with the mediator as well?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

No, not yet.

Dylan (Ft. Collins, CO)

Wait, what...did I miss something with Rachel Cordingly and Showtime?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

There's a short Fight Camp video Showtime put up on YouTube on her.

ROB (WASHINGTON DC)

Any idea on the crowd expected for Froch/Johnson? I will be there.

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

The room holds maybe 3,000 at most. I would imagine it will be pretty full.

Rick (Evanston)

Dan- glad Judah/Khan was made, but does Judah really have a shot? Khan just seems younger and has a better punch.

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Of course he has a shot. Both are fast, both have good power (although I think Judah has better power) and both have shown they can be hurt. I like the fight, as I have said since before it was made when I was hoping it would be made.

Jesse (Montreal)

Can't wait for Judah-Khan. I know that Amir's chin will definitely be tested once more. I haven't seen a Zab fight, win or lose where Zab didn't land a big shot on his opponent. And the beauty of it is that it goes both sides; Zab doesn't have the best chin out there as well. What a fight this is gonna be!

Jimmy (Liverpool, UK)

When is the super 6 final roughly scheduled to take place? the tournament has take a little too much time for my liking, although it has been entertaining.

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

If all goes to the plan, it will happen in the fall. With the various injuries and delays the tournament was knocked off course by about a total of about 4 or 5 months. Not too bad all things considered.

Eric Omaha [via mobile]

Dan - Who would you like to see Victor Ortiz fight next?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Obviously, Mayweather would be interesting. A rematch with Berto would obviusly be great. If it's something smaller, the mandatory against Aydin is a legitimate fight.

Chris Mannix (In a place where he thought he could take a nap)

And now can't because of James Dolan. Someone, put me out of my misery.

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Shoulda stuck to being exclusively a ballboy.

Matt (Chicago)

Is your hatred/lack of respect for MMA all because you are bitter that you cover a dying sport? (I don't hate boxing and would love to see it make a comeback, but reality is reality)

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Are you upset because you are brain dead?

Charles (Philly)

I, for one, am glad that Bradley was accepted to the Winky Wright School of Business: unification fights don't mean as much as they used to; and Judah is far more entertaining than Bradley.

Brady (Golden Valley, MN)

Is...GUS...JOHNSON...Announcing....TOMORROW...NIGHT???

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

YES!!!!!!!! I BELIEVE SO!!!!!!!!!! ALONG WITH AL BERNSTEIN AND ANTONIO TARVER WITH SPECIAL GUEST ANDRE WARD!!!!!!!OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reid (Cleveland)

Watching the Heat celebrate early, then implode, remided me of Nate Campbell's first fight with Robbie Peden

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Did you notice that after D-Wade made that 3 and posed for like an hour in front of the Mavs bench that Dallas closed the game from there with something like a 20-4 run?

Bob (VA)

Dan, I'm on to you. Your PED of choice must be "The Clear", so that you can mix it in with your Sprite and no one will know. Despite what you say, I know you will never Take The Test!

victor (north jersey)

a dying sport that has the most successful ppvs in history and biggest gates around the world..cmon now..last couple of ufc main events have been boring.

Joe (NJ)

why don't you ask Matt(Chicago) what the highest paid( per match) MMA guy makes and the numerous guys that make more then that now or have made more then that in a boxing match. And let's see what is doing better.

James (Australia)

Hey Dan.It would be awesome to see Aussie Daniel Geale fight Sergio Martinez in a huge payday.Geale is 1 of the nicest blokes you would ever meet & with his top amateur pedigree including a Commonwealth Games Gold Medal i think he would give Martinez a competitive fight...Geale is a full fledged 160 pounder at basically 5ft 11/6ft tall so definitely a decent alternative to Zbik should he beat Chavez Jr.

Patrick (Mexico)

Matt (Chicago) you are six different kinds of stupid

Dustin (Maine)

Reality from ESPN The Mag: Manny Pacquiao made a weeeeee bit more than Brock Lesnar and Georges St Pierre last year.

Bing (Philly)

Is it true that Super 8 motels wanted two more fighters in the tournament so they could sponsor it?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley. Oh, wait, don't. It's Bing. And Bing is the biggest moron in chat history.

Billy (Waco, Texas)

Hey, I'm all about consolidation and efficiency these days. So let's just get these out of the way, for a small sanctioning fee, of course. TAKE THE TEST, Joel Julio, Valev poop, how's your cat, KISS rocks. And let's not forget David Haye's a ducker no matter what he does, pay the man Shirley and Floyd Mayweather will probably fight Christy Martin next. Chhhhooooooowwwwwwww!

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

OMG that is hilarious. You forgot to serve me a Sprite at my boxing BBQ, but I forgive you and won't serve you to Banishment. Instead, I will only ask that you follow me on Twitter.

Clay (Chattanooga)

D-Raf, i think Judah DEFINITELY has a better punch than Khan & he can match his quickness! if Khan comes in wildly like he did against the last southpaw he fought in McKloskey it will be a short night for him! IMO

Alec (Nashville)

Dan, we talk a lot about the woeful practices of the WBA, WBC, and WBO. But not a lot of talk about the IBF. What are your thoughts on them, and where do they stand in the organizational pecking order?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

One thing about the IBF is that they follow their rules to the letter. Now some of those rules are ridiculous and stupid, but they follow them. If you get involved with the IBF you know exactly what to expect. The ratings are not particularly good and they have love affair with South African fighters, but it is what it is. One thing about the IBF that I do respect is that they RARELY have interim champions -- only in the case of a legitimate, long-term injury to a champion, which is when I support the use of an interim champion. The IBF also allows unifications to take a front seat to a mandatory. All that said, they need to change some of their mandatory and purse bid procedures and update some rules to relect that we are in the 21st century.

Jesse (Montreal)

I have that feeling Zab is gonna pull the upset. That combination of speed and KO power is deadly for Khan. Plus we overlook the battle of the trainers: Freddie Roach vs. Sweet pea. This is gonna be a good test for Pernell as a trainer to come up with an effective game plan.

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

The trainer battle is a very interesting part of this fight. If Judah wins, it could really launch Whitaker into a top level of trainers.

Jimmy (Liverpool, UK)

If Tim Bradley knew from the get go he would duck Khan, why did he go on HBO and tell Khan to 'stop running', surely he should have jus kept his mouth shut?!?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

No idea.

Charles (Philly)

Billy also forgot to mention your airplane seat assignment and water pressure. AND YOU FORGOT TO SAY "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH....."

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

My bad.

Jackson (IA)

Love the Judah/Kahn fight, Dan. 2 punchers, 0 chins. Excitement.

The Love Child (Dan's House)

Who and where am I fighting next Dad?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. You will be on the Khan-Judah undercard on July 23. No opponent yet, but Main Events tells me they are interested in trying to match him with Shawn Porter. Not sure if Porter is interested but that is a VERY VERY VERY interesting fight.

Mark (Mary Esther, FL)

Dan, Now that Epix has officially announced that they will carry the Sturn fight, how did you thinkn they did on their last broadcast? I thought it was wierd and didn't flow right, but the announcers were good.

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

They picked up the British version. They were not even going to show it live at first, but wound up doing so basically as a favor to the fans. The next production will be with its own announers and graphics. The last one was a one-time thing.

MacDaddy (Philly)

OH Bearded One, I see Mike Jones on the schedule in a tune up, anything significant for him in the wings?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

If he wins his TR Live fight he is supposed to return in September to HBO to fight on a Gamboa undercard.

Jake (Los Angeles)

I actually really like the British breadcasters. They generally add more excitement to the fight, IMO.

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

I've been getting DVDs and tapes from England for probably 15 years or so, so I have watched cards with guys like Ian Darke and Adam Smith and Jim Watt for years. They are good and do bring some spice to the telecast. Ian Darke is as good as anyone on blow-by-blow for sure.

Eric (North Hollywood)

Dan, Any tips from the upgrade master on how to possibly get one for my flight this wknd?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Mileage and status. If you have them you book the ticket and then call them and ask for one and there is one available you can cash in miles. Good luck.

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

Are there any qualities you see in Junior that reminds you of his dad at this point?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

He does have a very good left hook to the body.

Kevin (Albany)

Danno, Big boxing fan here and faithful Friday Night fight watcher, I saw somewhere that Pawel Wolak is fighting Delvin Rodriguez in July. Is this fight made? Man, what a war that will be.

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Yes, that fight is a done deal for July 15 at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC.

Charles (Philly)

Do you concentrate on getting miles/status on one airline?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Yes, it's the only way to go. I have hundreds of thousands of miles on US Air. I'm militant about my miles and airline. When you travel a lot, you gotta be.

Dave (Brooklyn)

Dan you said the IBF lets unifications take place over mandatory bouts but both Clottey and Margarito were stripped of their IBF title when they both signed on to fight Cotto.

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Correct, because they have rules associated with that that the contracts have to be in by a certain date and in both cases those deadlines were missed by one of the fighters/promoters.

Eric Omaha [via mobile]

Reality: Manny Pacquiao is one of the biggest sports stars in the world, Bernard Hopkins last fight had 1.8 million viewers, 40-50,000 people will be at the Klitschko-Haye fight, major networks like ESPN, HBO and Showtime regularly air boxing matches and new networks like Epix are trying to enter the market. Yep, boxing is dead

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Stop trying to be rational please.

Rags (NYC)

If that was true...Motel 6 missed a golden opportunity

Toy Maker (Toy Factory)

I am proud to announce that I have invented a revolutionary new Shane Mosley doll. When you pull the string, it shakes your hand.

Mike Tyson (Canastota, NY)

One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble........

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

So, so true.

Alex Trebek (Game Show Set)

Winky Wright, Tim Bradley, Hasim Rahman, and Alfredo Angulo

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Who are students and/or faculty of the Winky Wright School of Boxing Business, Alex? I'd like dopey business decisions for $500, Alex.

Ronak (NY)

Do you think chavez jr vs alvarez can be made this year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

No.

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

Hangover 2: better, worse or as good as the original? Go this weekend or Netflix it at a later date?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Very funny, but not quite as funny as the first one.

Trevor (Milwaukee)

Dan of Steel - since someone brought up Golovkin, have you seen his KO4 of Bute in the amateurs? Sick... Dude beat Korobov, Andy Lee, Despaigne, and Dirrell before turning pro, quite a resume.

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Yes, he did have a great amateur resume. I know I have at least the Dirrell bout on a DVD.

darryl p (indianapolis)

does hbo have any time to do a face-off with khan and judah with the fight like a month away?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Unlikely.

J (ATL)

Thoughts on Katsidis-Earl? Mick really needs a W. Want to see himback in the states.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

It makes sense for Katsidis, who needs a win and there will be interest in Australia based on their first awesome fight. But Earl is totally shot and probably should not be fighting anymore. I think Katsidis runs him over like a truck over a newspaper.

Joe (LBC)

Denis Boytsov - is there anything to that guy?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

I actually asked Golden Boy, his co-promoter, about him this week. He had hand surgery and plans to test it out in Europe perhaps this summer. They general plan is that he will probably stay in Europe now for a couple of tune-up type fights and then next year come to the US when he is ready to fight a name opponent on something like a PPV undercard or an HBO undercard.

Kris Krepps (GR)

Do you think Berto would have made these comment if he won the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Definitely not.

Lee (Los Angeles, CA)

How many Twitter followers before you finally tell us who's feelings were hurt from the 1st BBQ chat?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

I wont ever tell you. But I will tell you that ONE person called me really upset over this year's BBQ blog, but I won't throw that person under a bus either, even though he is a crybaby.

Mike (Trenton, SC)

I know a lot of Americans don't like Carl Froch, but I'm a big fan .. he always talks a big game and comes to bring it .. GJ is a warrior through and through and is a true pro .. what's not to like?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Totally agree.

Pawel (Chicago)

Okay, which card are you going to watch live tomorrow? HBOs or Showtime?s?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Showtime, since I will be at ringside in AC.

Gary (Virginia Beach)

The only thing Tim Bradley has that is marketable is the same thing that Mayweather has: an undefeated record. With an L on either of their records they could not draw flies.

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

I have to disagree. Even with an undefeated record Bradley can't draw flies.

Kevin (Greensburg)

Dan, your thoughts on Haye refusing to shake Wlad?s hand TWICE? To me, it?s classless.

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

It is classless, but what I expect from Haye.

Karim (Los Angeles)

Dan, on a percentage scale, what chance does Jerry Jones have of landing Pacquiao-Marquez III?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

Zero. The fight will be at MGM Grand.

Rachel Cordingley (Nottingham)

I'd like to apologize for my behavior at your Memorial Day BBQ. I should haven't have spent the entire afternoon standing behind your grill and shrieking at you while you were trying to cook the meat.

Adam (DuPage)

What ever happened to Sauerland's grand plans for the cruiserweight division (Super Six style tournament, title unification bouts, etc.)?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

It has been delayed, but as I understand it they still hope to put it on at some point.

Big John (via Cyberspace)

Dan! Your twitter account is now VERIFIED!

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

I KNOW!

mike (ny,ny)

peter dan.. thanks for breaking the walsh news on twitter for me, I will now go wonder into traffic!

Jonathan (Atlanta)

Dan, Any interest in Shumenov vs Cleverly?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Sure, two younger guys in the top 10 who make nice fights. Why not?

Juan Garcia (sunny LA)

Dan I always look forward to the chat. Although I am rooting for Marquez to beat Pacquiao, I see the Pac Man chalking up another victory. Besides Sergio Martinez at a higher weight, do you see any meaninful challengers for the Pac Man without going beyond middle weight. I was wondering if Bob Arum would keep a Chavez vs. Pacquiao in house if he wins a WBC title this Saturday. Thanks Dan.

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Pacquiao could eventually have big fights with Victor Ortiz or Canelo Alvarez at some point, just as two examples, without having to go to much higher weights.

Simon (Uk)

I have gained so much respect for Amir Khan over the past few weeks. He did something you don't often see in boxing by being generous in an offer to someone who called him out... It seems to me like he would actually be willing to fight all the top contenders at -40-7 except pacquaio. Did he come across that way to you in your phone call with him?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Absolutely. I spoke to Amir again yesterday for a few minutes and he was very excited about the Judah fight and his overall desire just to make the biggest fights. He wants to be great.

Rags (NYC)

What's the status of the Shumenov-Goossen lawsuit?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Ongoing. I believe there is a hearing related to it later this month.

Jesse (Montreal)

Still no news on Ismayl Sillakh?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

What are you talking about? He fought and won on the Roy Jones undercard last week. His people would like to get him back on ESPN2 before the end of the season in late August.

Seamus (Portland)

Dan, surely HBO should be looking at a Martinez vs Pirog unification fight? I know Pirog had a poor first defence but he did wipe out Jacobs ON HBO and certainly looks more of a threat than the likes of Zbik.

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

For reasons I think are dumb, the Martinez camp will not entertain a fight with Pirog.

karl (uk)

i like your facial hair

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

These are my readers.

James Dolan (MSG)

I am proud to announce that Knicks will be hiring the finest sports managerial mind on earth as the new GM: Knicks fans, please welcome Nacho Beristain.

Rick (Marina, Ca)

Whats next for Arreola winner of Haye-V. klitscko

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

No. Arreola probably will be back July 9 on the Williams-Lara undercard to stay busy.

darryl p (indianapolis)

will not fighting amir khan hurt tim bradley in the future

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

No, because he won't be getting punched in the head.

James Dolan (NY)

'We are very proud to announce the new trainer for the Knicks, Sid Brumback.

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Legendary.

JE (Chicago)

Do you have a prediction for the Mikey Garcia fight

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Paaaaaiiiiin. For Guzman.

James Dolan (NY)

I am proud to announce we are bringing Shaq out of retirement and are finding loopholes to sign him to an 8 year $100 million dollar contact.

Rommel (Alameda)

Your thoughts on Khan-Ariza re-pairing...

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

It's good for both of them.

James Dolan (MSG)

We are pleased to announce that Mr. Walsh is being stripped of his title as GM...and promoted to Super GM. Also, we have hired Jose Sulaiman as a special consultant in exchange for a small sanctioning fee.

Frank (Phx)

Dan I saw your tweet the other day bout Judah only losing once at 140lbs and that was to a HOF. I see Judah wining this fight!

Sean (Iowa)

Saw what was possibly just an internet rumor about a Martinez-Hopkins 170 lbs fight. Heard about this, or have any thoughts on it?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Wishful thinking by some. I would doubt that fight happens.

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

By the way, Freaks, I will be appearing on FNF tonight to talk about some of the latest news and notes in boxing so tune in!

brian (paradise)

we should be glad Haye didn't shake his hand because he would have hurt his hand and called off the fight

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Excellent point!

Anthony (Bronx, NY)

Glad to see Thomas Dulorme make it to your BBQ. Would you agree that he is one of the exciting prospects to watch these days?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Yes, but I don't want to get overly excited yet. He has a lot to prove, but he is a PROSPECT. I am very interested to see how he does with a crafty, solid veteran like Chop Chop Corley on ESPN2 next week.

Rick (Marina, Ca)

Have you seen the movie trailer about the boxing robots ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Yes and it looks horrible. I was actually asked to appear in the film with some of my media colleagues, but I did not make the trip to Detroit to do it. Based on the trailer, it looks like I made the right call.

David Haye (Press Conference)

Instead of shaking Wladimir's hand directly, I have hired Shane Mosley to do so in my place.

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

OMG!!!! EPIC! PAY THE MAN, SHIRLEY! Best quote of the chat.

Oscar DelaHoya (Rehab)

Cheeeeooooooowwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

Choewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

Chris (Los Angeles CA)

D$ - It's a shame that we now live in a sports world where when someone does something great (see Pacquiao, Ortiz, Hopkins) they are blindly accused of steroids. And what's even more shameful are the droves of people who blindly follow.

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

You're right.

Shawn (Tempe)

Dan, do you have any knowledge as to what venue the July 8th FNF will be at? I'm getting conflicting information here.

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

It's in Phoenix. Not sure which specific building.

Darryl (Montreal)

Still no sign of the guy with the cat on his back. If I find him I'll take a photo and send it to you

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Good man. Keep searching. That was epic.

Juden87 (Tallahassee)

So Dan what is up with Bradley refusing to fight khan right now? I am shocked he turned down that payday?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

I have no idea. Honestly, I have heard from numerous people in the business, including fighters, who basically think Bradley is just stupid.

Anthony (Los Angeles)

Dan the Man, What did you think of Atlas and Bhop going back and forth on FNF last week?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

I thought Teddy was out of line and was basically insulting Hopkins, especially because he predicted Pascal was going to win.

Jose Sulaiman (Knicks Headquarters)

I am pleased anounce that I will be the new GM of the Knicks. My first act is to elevate the Knicks #1 contender for the Heat's Eastern Conference title and name them the interim champ of the YMCA Summer League.

Jack (NY)

I really cant figure out why Bernard Stiverne - Ray Austin is on HBO when neither of those guys stand a chance against any elite heavyweights and there are more than 1 interesting title fights off tv on the undercard.

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

I dont have much an issue with a big puncher like Stiverne, who is kinda interesting, in the opener of a tripleheader but I literally get physically ill at the thought of Ray Austin being on HBO again.

Bert (Minneapolis)

So Coyne-Jones is off TV? but Ray Austin is on?!?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

Bundrage-Powell 2 off TV as well and that's a better fight than Coyne-Jones and Stiverne-Austin.

rick (la)

Rather see Steve Austin in boxing match than Ray.

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

The WWE star and the Six Million Dollar Man would both be better.

Jesse (Montreal)

Was Gary Russell Jr. supposed to fight soon? Those quick hands need to be back in the ring where they belong.

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

He is on Telefutura on June 17.

alan (South Africa)

I agree with you about the Teddy/ B-hop to and fro. Give credit where credit is due. Simple.

Jack (NY)

Apparently a rematch of a fight featuring a rare double knockdown and a great KO with a title on the line isn't enough for HBO to pass on Stiverne - Austin.

Eric (North Hollywood)

OMG Dan, I kid you not. Saw a guy with a cat in his back hear in LA @ a movie theater and he was chatting up with some folks. I think the cat guy moved over here!

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

Hmmmmm.

John (San Fran)

How much of the Judah-Khan undercard will be shown on TV? That card looks phenomenal if Schaefer pulls it off!

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

Right now, the main event. HBO has not committed to an undercard fight at this point. Hopefully, we'll have at least a doubleheader. I absolutely love the idea of Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh the Love Child against Porter.

Blood Test (The Needle)

Hey Andre Berto, I know what Victor Ortiz was on. It's called 'I'M-NOT-FREDDY-HERNANDEZ'!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

LOL. Speaking of Freddy, he will be on ESPN2 on July 1 against Mark Melligen.

Jason (Atlanta)

Hey dan, awesome stuff on Berto/Ortiz. Some shine has really come off some stars lately... Bradley and Berto have done NOTHING to improve fans impressions of them recently.

Tony (NJ)

DTMHave you heard whats next for Linares? really hope he hooks up with Roach and gets some hight profile fights. He is great to watch

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

Nothing specific yet for Linares, but he could wind up on the Aug. 6 HBO card.

Frank (Phx)

Dan do you know what time the weigh in takes place? I heard glen Johnson was having a hard time making the weight

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

It's at 3 pm ET today.

Harry (UK)

Hello Dan - Do you know if Khan v Judah will be on SKYsports in the UK?

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

When I spoke to Amir yesterday he said he wasn't sure yet. He thought Sky might do the fight, but if not it will be back on Primetime.

andy (austin)

When can we expect to see H. Soto back in action?

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

Somebody did not check the schedule I update every day.

Bucky (NY)

Dan, I need to buy a lawnmower...got any recommendations?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

I work for ESPN, not HGTV.

Duff (Boston, MA)

I like raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens. I am also fond of bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens.

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

Good to know.

dazzed (SJ)

is the david diaz -marquez fight still on ??

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

There have been issues making the fight over Diaz's purse, so I think the Marquez folks are looking for another opponent.

RonMack (Cincinnati)

DanimaniacWhy isn't a Sturm/Martinez match being put together/talked about?

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

I wish I knew. Sturm is fighting in Germany in June and I have no idea why he could be couldn't come here for a fight with Martinez in October. He has said he would like to have that fight, but I am not sure why it is not seriously be considered if he wins.

Gerardo (AZ)

Dan, is the Erdei fight on the telecast tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

No, only the international broadcast. Showtime will show Froch-Johnson but open the show with the same-day tape of Kessler's comeback fight.

Anthony (Bronx, NY)

There are sooo many fighters to follow these days. Just keeping up with my favorites and popular ones takes up some time. How do you follow and report on ALL of them??

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

I have a patient wife.

James Dolan (NY)

Just wanted everyone to know we have put Winky Wright in charge of the Knicks 2011-12 payroll.

Jordan (Matsue, Japan)

Is there only ONE Ricky Hatton if you have double vision?

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

Wow, I never thought of that. I guess I would say there would BE only one even though you are seeing two.

JSaturn (NYC)

Will the Katsidis v Earl fight be televised on US TV?

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

I don't know but I would say quite doubtful.

Jim (Cleveland)

I have been a follower of these chats for about a year now...but I still do not get the reference regarding valuev's poops. Can someone please explain?

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

Freaks do we need to go there?

Gerardo (AZ)

Jim, there is nothing to explain. Valuev is a giant. That's it. The rest are assumptions.

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

LOL. Well put.

Omar (South Lake Tahoe, CA)

Send JIM to the ARCHIVES!!!!

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Dan, will you be voting for Sven Ottke and Prince Naseem Hamed for next year's IBHOF induction? Anyone else?

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

As I have done in the past, I vote for Hamed. I do not vote for Ottke.

Dustin (Maine)

Continuing what Anthony from the Bronx said, thank you Dan for making it so much easier to be a boxing fan with the notebook, chats, and Twitter.

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

Glad to help. It is actually my job.

James Dolan (NY)

we have now appointed Fred Wilpon, and Bernie Maddof via Email and Twitter to run our Franchise, our first order of the day , will be to scheme the public by making them pay some of the highest ticket prices in the NBA, and then keep the team the same as it is,

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

OK Fight Freaks, thanks for chatting today. Hope you enjoy a good boxing weekend with some good fights on tap. I'm headed for Atlantic City tomorrow, so follow me on Twitter for updates through the night. Make sure to check out all the new stories and blogs from the week and check out FNF tonight on ESPN2 as well. Have a great weekend. Peace.
