Chat with AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (10:59 AM)

Good morning, gang. Time once again for 60 minutes of fantasy chattage. Thanks so much for Choo-choo-choosing me! Plenty to discuss, so let's get right to it. Second cup of coffee in hand... who is up first?

Tree (Newport)

Streaming for Thursday: Swarzak, Malholm or Duke? Also any chance you guys will release the Daily Notes a day in advance as in most leagues you can't add a starting pitcher on the day he pitches and actually use him?

AJ Mass
  (11:01 AM)

Not a big fan of any of the three -- working on DN right now... They always post the day before, Tree. Only the current day's is linked to the top of the screen - you need to scroll down a bit...

Morgan (Baltimore)

How much are you buying Michael Morse? He's been on fire recently

AJ Mass
  (11:02 AM)

I like him in streaks... but still outside the top 100 hitters.

Terry (NY)

Scherzer has been struggling lately. Would you drop him for: Latos, Anibal, CJ Wilson?

AJ Mass
  (11:03 AM)

Yes to all three, Wilson getting the most love.

Kevin (K.C.)

Are you buying Danny Espinosa?

AJ Mass
  (11:05 AM)

Nope. I'm not buying the power and once that goes, there's little else there... having said that, given his position, he's worth riding for a time.

Ralph Wiggum (Springfield)

I think I broke my Wookee. Is Hanley Ramirez broke too? Will he hit the DL?

AJ Mass
  (11:06 AM)

Not if he can help it... I expect he'll try to play by Friday... but I'm not too optimistic.

Rob (NJ)

Rumors flying that Brett Lawrie gets the call on Friday. You adding right away or take a wait and see approach in a 13 team mixed?

AJ Mass
  (11:08 AM)

That's probably on hold for a few days after his bruised wrist. I think you have to add right away if you want a chance at him... any "buzz" guy needs to be treated that way. But don't expect PCL numbers...

Shin Soo Choo (Above the Line)

When you labeled me 'bench-able' in leagues in your recent column, it seem like you took only YTD stats into account by averaging all the current stats. Shouldn't the line be higher for a guy like me that you expect me to finish the season with a .280 avg? I can't be a .250 hitter right?

AJ Mass
  (11:10 AM)

Bench-able is much different than "cut away" isn't it? And yes, when you've hit .250 so far, you are bench-able, but it's not a permanent thing by any means. I do expect improvement, which is why I said as the line moves, Choo may no longer be the comparison point.

dan (vt)

marmol blew a save last night. big time. is his job in jeopardy, and who's next in line for the cubs?

AJ Mass
  (11:12 AM)

No, his job is not in jeopardy. Sean Marshall would likely be in the mix, but unless we see three more of these blow-ups in a row, Marmol is still the go-to guy.

Barney (Sacramento)

Can you explain why Chris Perez entered the game in the 9th with a 3-run lead and was not credited with a save?

AJ Mass
  (11:14 AM)

3-run lead only applies to RP coming in at the start of the ninth. When he entered, it was 2-outs and bases empty, therefore, not a save situation.

Bobby (Nashua)

Any reason to start Ubaldo today? Im first in ERA, 2nd in WHIP but middle of the pack in wins.. He's due no?

AJ Mass
  (11:16 AM)

Any given day - but U-BAD-O has shown me no reason of late to have any faith, or to risk my team ERA/WHIP.

Ben (Boston)

Is Cahill regressing or has he had tough matchups? Is he still top 25?

AJ Mass
  (11:17 AM)

He's hanging on to Top 25 status by a thread. I see some more regression in the future though, so be prepared for some bumpy starts.

Fred (Bemidji)

Have you heard anything about how long Kubel's going to be out? I don't think my Twinkies can stand to lose ANOTHER hitter.

AJ Mass
  (11:18 AM)

Reportedly, he's feeling better and doesn't think a DL-trip is needed. Day-to-day...

mendel (fl)

I know typically you are not fond of starting a pitcher right off the DL, but if ever there is a perfect storm Seattle is the perfect place to start. You starting Matusz today or no?

AJ Mass
  (11:20 AM)

If you're feeling it, then go with your gut. As you said, I never start pitchers off the DL. It's a line in the sand I've drawn for myself, and so I never look back with regret. If you're feeling it, you do it.

AJ Mass

Mike (Tampa, FL)

Kudos to you for seeing the Soria fall before any of your colleagues...that said, many of them expect him to earn his job back. Do you feel Crow can hold on to the closer gig, or will Soria make his way back if he figures out the mechanical flaws in his delivery?

AJ Mass
  (11:22 AM)

Absolutely. There's something wrong, but if he solves the problem, he's earned the right to get that job back... I'm just not convinced the road back will be an easy one.

Paul (Chicago)

Is Alex Gordon above the Choo line? I should be playing that guy every day, no?

AJ Mass
  (11:23 AM)

Yes. Well above the line.

Fletch (Los Angeles)

Ryan Roberts - above the choo line? Does positional scarcity come into play for the choo line?

AJ Mass
  (11:25 AM)

Yes, he's above... Positional scarcity doesn't come into play because if say you're considering a 2B to bench/drop -- then you're going to need another 2B to take his place. If there isn't a free one above the line, you don't need to make the move. It kind of takes care of itself.

Dwayne (Houston)

When will you be a guest on the Fantasy Focus podcast?

AJ Mass
  (11:26 AM)

You'll have to ask them... usually there's no need to go deeper into the pool than Nate, TMR and Tristan. But I appreciate the thought...

Jeff S. (Vermont)

while Choo's stats so far this year might make him the most average guy, I think you picked the wrong guy to use. When you say Choo, we all think .300, 20, 80, 20 at minimum.

AJ Mass
  (11:28 AM)

And if he gets there, more power to him... but we're not talking end of season. We're talking about making a move now. It's a quick snapshot of comparison right now and should only be used to tip the scales if you're unsure.

Tony (Milwaukee)

Dunn continues to not hit lefties, and not really hit at all. I've stuck with him this long, but is it finally time to drop him for say, Eric Hosmer?

AJ Mass
  (11:30 AM)

In less than 100 ABs, Hosmer has outproduced Dunn in about 200 ABs... that pretty much says it all to me.

Bob (Austin, TX)

Why is Hanley resisting the DL? I'd rather have him completely out for 2 weeks and then play well the rest of the season instead of struggling like he has been.

AJ Mass
  (11:31 AM)

And this is Hanley. I admire the desire to play every day, but it always ends up with a sub-par Hanley at some point during the season. That's why I ranked him where I did.

Mike Moustakas (Stashed in AAA)

AJ, when will I be called up? It's June 1st and I'm still in AAA...

AJ Mass
  (11:33 AM)

June 1st is an arbitrary cutoff date. He'll be up when the team is ready to call him up and no sooner. I'm not expecting him before September.

Craig (NH)

You like Nyjer or Tabata going forward?

AJ Mass
  (11:36 AM)

In theory I like Nyjer much better. The only concern there is PT - but if Morgan gets regular ABs, he's got more upside in my book.

Frank (PA)

Dont these teams realize that fantasy seasons are hanging in the balance?!?! Call these guys up already!

AJ Mass
  (11:37 AM)

LOL, Frank. I'll get on the phones and see what I can do...

Brooks (Not from Philly)

AJ if I mask myself and pretend I'm not from Philly will you answer my question in regards to Ibanez continuing his hot streak? It seems you neglect us Brotherly Love residents.

AJ Mass
  (11:39 AM)

Oh, Brooks... I think I've had more than my share of chats about Hamels, J-Roll and the rest of the gang. Ibanez is not as hot as he has been, and not as cold as he was before... but with Utley back, the whole lineup just works better.

Matt (Chi-Town)

AJ, this is an emergency! It's about my fantasy team. Can you please rank these players for ROS? Hosmer, Trumbo, Sandoval, A-Ram

AJ Mass
  (11:42 AM)

Hosmer, Kung Fu, Trumbo, Aramis.

Hanley (Below the Line)

Moreso than your fantasy counterparts, you seem to take semi-recent production into account for future projections. Is there a reason for that difference? Some stat or logic that makes you believe recent behavior will continue, while others ignore it?

AJ Mass
  (11:44 AM)

Can't speak to the others, but for me, it HAS to be a factor... but certainly not the only one. And the longer a season goes on, the more of a factor it needs to be. Players DO have career years that come out of nowhere and other reliable veterans suddenly collapse. To ignore the present entirely makes as little sense as to go solely on a two-week sample.

John (Indiana)

Thoughts on Allen Craig at 2B, will he get enough PT moving forward to be worth rostering?

AJ Mass
  (11:46 AM)

I hope so. All I've seen of him is positive, and in his case, it looks like his manager agrees and the PT will come. Not the case for another young player who I've enjoyed watching - Dirks in Detroit. I don't think he'll get the same chances.

Dave (SD)

So as Choo approaches his career norms, the Choo Line loses its relevance, is that fair to say? And in a month when Choo is batting .280, it's obsolete. I just don't think choosing a slumping .300 hitter as your baseline for the benefit of a gimmicky name was a good choice.

AJ Mass
  (11:49 AM)

The line doesn't lose its relevance because the line is based on the league average... Choo just happened to be the best match on the day the article was written. And, just between you and me... I don't think Choo is going to rebound as much as you do.

Jeff S. (Vermont)

If dave read the article, he would have noticed you said that it would be obsolete and someone else very might take the cake..... With that said.... Pujols, any chance he gets 8 more games at 3B? That'd be HUUUUUUUUUGE for me.

AJ Mass
  (11:50 AM)

I think Pujols could definitely reach 10 at 3B, especially if all you need is games played there and not necessarily starts.

Mike (New Orleans)

Hey AJ - in a league with an innings cap, is there any good reason to hold off on running out of innings early? I've got Halladay, King Felix, CC, Anibal, and Jhoulys as my starters, and none of them seem like they should be sitting on the bench.

AJ Mass
  (11:51 AM)

If they're good innings, then it doesn't matter when they come.

Jordan (Boulder)

Is there ever a player who you think will rebound? You always seem to forecast doom for everyone. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong. I haven't read every single thing you have written.

AJ Mass
  (11:53 AM)

I've definitely been in Albert's corner all season - but how's this: Geovany Soto, Edwin Encarnacion, Jason Bay... all will rebound.

Coach J (Minnesota)

Matt Joyce is AMAZING right now...what are some realistic expectations for him as he comes back to Earth. He is even hitting LHP a little more

AJ Mass
  (11:54 AM)

I'm in. I think it's legit. Maybe not league leading BA legit... but .320, 20 HR? Within the realm of reality.

Kevin (NJ)

I prefer my AJ pessimistic.

AJ Mass
  (11:55 AM)

LOL. Don't worry... won't take long to get back there.

Cliff Lee owner (FL)

Do you see any problems? Last night, his 6 ER (and 4 BB: 3 K) against a weak lineup has me worried.

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

I'd answer you, but I already used up my Phillies quota for the week...

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

Just a bump in the road for Lee... every pitchers deserves a few mulligans.

Ben (Boston)

Same with Jaime? He'll bounce back, right?

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

He'll be fine as well... 11 runs is not going to be an every-start stat line. People are way too reactionary.

Harrison (DC)

I would absolutely trade Uggla if someone offered me ____?

AJ Mass
  (12:01 PM)

Ryan Theriot.

Dan (NY)

A. Sanchez or R.Nolasco ROS? Sanchez is hotter but Nolasco is ranked higher.

AJ Mass
  (12:02 PM)

Anibal by a hair.

AJ Mass
  (12:03 PM)

That's the whistle gang. There's always too many questions and not enough time, but I try to get to the Twitter... until Friday, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
