Chat with Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (12:02 PM)

Is this think working? Having early issues on my end...but very ready to get this party started.

Matt Williamson
  (12:02 PM)

I have talked to a few of our bloggers who are ranking their Top 10 LTs. As a jumping off point today, here is my list-and I just posted it on Twitter (@WilliamsonNFL). 1. Thomas 2. Long 3. Peters 4. Ferguson 5. Clady 6. Whitworth 7. Gross 8. Okung 9. Free 10. Backus

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

And along those lines, Everyone Have Fun Tonight. Everyone Wang Chung Tonight. Never forget that.

Nathan (DC)

Do you think Terrelle Pryor goes into the supplemental draft? Does anyone take him if he does?

Matt Williamson
  (12:04 PM)

Not sure he does or not-not really on top of that situation. But someone will take him. Watched him quite a bit in HS when he was here in Pittsburgh (Jeannette). Amazingly gifted. He actually VERY much reminds me of Cam Newton.

t (SF)

Any new lockout news

Matt Williamson
  (12:05 PM)

Nope...Needs to end. Driving me insane. But tune in tomorrow to our Football Today Podcast. We have an expert on the subject, Jason Reimer Esq, on to discuss further.

Sean (Iowa) [via mobile]

Matt, what do you think about Christian Ponder using his own money to pay for a practice field for his teammates and himself? And how does he have money when there's a lockout?

Matt Williamson
  (12:06 PM)

I love it. Bet a teammate or two chips in too. Dedicated to being great. Very high on Ponder here. Maybe he delivers newspapers on the side.

Al (Wausau, WI)

Matt, it looks like it's working now. What's the next step in the efforts to resolve the dispute between owners and players? What is it that happens on June 3? Thanks for any answers you can provide.

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

Oh no no no. We are not talking about that here. No chance. Sorry Bro, but that isn't how this chat rolls. Download tomorrow's podcast.

Marc (Charlotte)

No regrets that's my motto. Well that and everybody wang chung tonight.

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

Excellent mottos. But never forget, "This is a dog eat dog world Woody. And I am wearing milk bone underwear." -Mr. Peterson

Joseph (Kansas City)

What is your take on Tressel? He is likely damaged goods in college football (at least for a year or two). Any chance of him moving to the NFL? Where are the possible destinations?

Matt Williamson
  (12:09 PM)

No clue, but to me-what he did best was to recruit. He was a master. College.

Yogi (Alaska)

From a fantasy football perspective, who do you think has the higher ceiling: Desean Jackson or Sidney Rice?

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

Depends on your league, but I tend to think Rice. Jackson is much more inconsistent, but if you are rewarded for big plays, he is tremendous. Rice will consistently score more TDs in my opinion. His QB situation is a little scarey, but like I said, I am a fan of Ponder for the long haul.

t (SF)

ok no more lockout questions. If this season did happen who would be your SB pick

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

Pack/Pats...I am guessing that I am not in the minority there!

drake (reading pa)

If rivers or romo or matt s doesn't get a ring is it time to get a replacement?its excuse after excuse for these guys.

Matt Williamson
  (12:11 PM)

No. Who ya gonna get first of all? Maybe those GMs can give GBay a call and see what they want for A Rodgers? Rivers is elite. The other guys are a step below, but 20 teams in the NFL would take Romo or Schaub.

justin (south beach )

Hey matt how about an article on soon to be star Mike Neal?

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

Not a bad idea. But not a ton of tape on that guy yet. Obviously the Pack believe in him though. That being said, I think they should get aggressive with Jenkins and lock him up.

Taylor (CA)

Is 2x All-Pro, 1x Pro-Bowl Michael Roos just an unintentional omission or do you really feel that he's not a Top 10 LT? I would have a hard time putting Okung, Free and Backus ahead of him personally. Maybe not a fantastic run blocker but he has to be one of the best pass protecting LTs in the league.

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

Not an omission and I expect Roos to get back on my list this time next year. But flat out-Roos was bad last year. Really struggled, as did the entire OL.

Ryan (WI)

Gates has obviously had the better career to this point, but who is a tougher cover, Jermichael Finley or Antonio Gates?

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

Right now, I think Finley. He is like no one else in this league. There isn't a good way at all to deal with him. Very very special.

t (SF)

as a 49ers fan any chance to win NFC West

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

But of course-that division is awful. Let's see what Sea and Zona do at QB first, but sure, I like your chances. Best D in the division.

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

Where is everyone today? Are there issues on your end folks? In the mood to talk some serious football here, but not getting the action I need.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

I'd like to think Clady can rise up your list with a healthy season...his rookie year was probably not as good as his stats indicated, but his agility and pass protection ability are filthy...

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

Great call by you. I wanted to put him higher, but just needs to play a little better. Plus, they have switched schemes twice now during his career-that isn't easy for a young lineman.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

How would you rank these potential FA DTs - Cullen, Cofield, Mebane and Pat Williams? Envision Denver signing one?

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

Think Denver wants Big Al Haynesworth? hmmm. As for those guys, Jenkins and Williams are total opposite animals. Cofield and Mebane are great young players who don't get the credit they deserve, but are also ascending players.

Adam (Jersey)

What about Penn? Near the Top 10?

Matt Williamson
  (12:18 PM)

Not really. Doesn't excite me. More like in that 14-17 range.

Jeff (Chicago)

How do you foresee the aging Bears D performing this year? Is this year the last chance for a lot of the older veterans to play on an elite defense?

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

Good point about the age, esp Urlacher and Briggs. Can they hold up for 16+ games? Big concern. Don't love the DTs either. But overall, this is a Top 10 D. Their great special teams helps for sure with field position, etc.

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

G N R "Patience"...Live Version. So loud here now.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Who's the better player - Charles Johnson or Ray Edwards? How likely is it that either make it to FA?

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

All depends on the bargaining agreement for if they hit the market. Both are great. Ascending. I like Johnson noticeably better though. He didn't have a guy like J Allen to deflect attention-that isn't Edwards fault btw. But Johnson is great vs. the run too and has just performed at a very high level every chance he has gotten. Like both though quite a bit. They will be expensive....rightfully so.

Brian (London, England)

Matt, aside from qb, v worried about my Seahawks, I think they need a lot of help in a lot of positions. One of the worst teams in the league next year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

Certainly could be. Not sure what I can call a real "Strength" of Sea right now. The OL should be improved and those OTs could be great. And there looks like a young core to build around, but overall, this looks like a 5 win type of team.

Drew (NY)

hey Matt, whats on the lunch menu today?

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

Put away a massive peppered turkey sammich on pumpernickel right before this chat. Delicious.

Jerry (Texas)

Is Joe Staley on the cusp on making the top 10 list?

Matt Williamson
  (12:24 PM)

Want him to be healthier, but he got consideration. So, Yes.

Scott (Bay Area)

Is there going to be a poll on the top OG's in the league? If so, where would Iupati rank in it?

Matt Williamson
  (12:24 PM)

Near the top. He would be the Okung of the Guard list. Was actually talking to Sando for quite a while yesterday and got into Iupati talk. It should hit his blog very soon I would guess.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

What do you think of Jacoby Ford? I thought he was just another Al Davis speed guy, but lo and behold, dude can catch...possibly DeSean Jackson-lite?

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

He is prob faster than Jackson, which is really saying something obviously. Maybe could get to be in that class, but still real inconsistent. Certainly a huge playmaker though. Can't wait to see Year 2 of Ford. But I also don't love their QB or OL to hold up for the deep ball.

Anthony (NYC)

M-Dub what are your thoughts on Chargers LT- Marcus McNeal?

Matt Williamson
  (12:26 PM)

He was strongly considered for that #10 spot. Solid. Not spectacular. Clearly a guy you can win with. And SD loves to go deep, which puts a lot of pressure on their LT.

Nathan (DC)

What's your take on the Bears' new tackle, Gabe Carimi? Some guys really love him, some not so much...

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

Great value for where they got him. Just looks like a Bear for the next 10 years. But as a LT? He might really struggle with speed. And as a RT? He isn't a total masher. That being said, he could be more than adequate at either spot.

James Starks (GB)

Am I on the way to becoming a feature back? or was last year a case of having fresher (if that is a word) legs than everybody else?

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

Not blown away with you. Fresh legs for sure. Really only had one big time game. Tremendous supporting cast. I think the drafting of Green told us plenty about Starks.

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

Yet another Side Note: One of you recommended Blink 182 to me on a chat here. I am forever grateful. Tremendous. "Adam's Song" just came on.

James (WI)

Hey Matt, Tell James Starks that Alex green will be eating his playing time by the middle of the season!

Matt Williamson
  (12:30 PM)

I kinda just did. Grant is "Just a Guy" too btw. Still, they don't need Sweetness in the backfield with that passing attack to score a ton of points.

Bryan Coward (Jonquil)

Who's the best tag team: Reed and Lewis, Wade and LeBron, me and you, or Hawk and Animal?

Matt Williamson
  (12:30 PM)

Hawk and Animal-by far. Are you kidding me?

Stu (VA)

Do you see the Titans line improving with another year together (without Mawae) and a pairing of Munchak and Matthews teaching them?

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

Munchak was teaching them last year...

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

But Tenn does need to add an interior OL starter in free agency.

kc (oakland)

Can Harbaugh and crew make Crabtree and Morgan more effective this yr? Do you see Crabtree taking it to another level?

Matt Williamson
  (12:32 PM)

Yes-and I do. And with CK behind center. This WR corps could use a speed guy for sure though, but Davis does fill that role down the middle of the field quite effectively. Arrow going up on SF's O.

tc (toronto)

Thoughts on the Rams LT Saffold? Thought he had an amazing rookie season!

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

Extremely solid. He was going to be my #11 actually. Just want to see a little more. The same argument could be made for Okung, but I have seen enough of Okung to know that he will be great.

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

Extremely solid. He was going to be my #11 actually. Just want to see a little more. The same argument could be made for Okung, but I have seen enough of Okung to know that he will be great.

Jeremy (DC)

Which teams are in contention for the "Suck for Luck" race?

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

Liking the Skins quite a bit right now. Clev will make their case. Surely someone in the NFC West could be involved. Buff too.

tommy (dallas)

Huge texan fan I think its our time Payton is old, tenn has a new qb and jags doesnt have a top qb agree?

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

It always seems like the Texans "Time"...but never is. However, I am jumping on the band wagon this year, because I see an improved D. Still, I will surely pick Indy in the South. The Colts just get back so many guys that were hurt last season.

Jon (Fairfield, CT)

Being a Badger Alumn, it makes me happy to see you rated Thomas ahead of Long. Could you explain why and what separates them?

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

VERY little separates them. Very little. Just think he has done it a little longer. A little better athlete. Both are tremendous.

Adam (Jersey)

With the uncertainty around Bowers, would you still pursue Ray Edwards/Charles Johnson/Babin, or focus on the secondary and offensive line?

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

I think the DE Train has left the station for TBay. Too many other worries, like you mentioned.

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

"Riders on the Storm" now...If you give this man a ride...

Tim (MN)

I'm convinced Vincent Jackson is a top 6 WR I can't come up with more than 5 WR's are better. Am I crazy?

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

Seems reasonable. Let me run through the NFL real quick in my cranium to see what I have to say about that.

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

Better: Andre J, Marshall, Jennings, Calvin J, Nicks, R White, Fitz Maybe: S Holmes, S Rice, Austin, D-Jax...what say you?

Donnie (Okla)

Who do you think Dallas will release out of the stable of RB's they have? Kinda crowded

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

Barber should be as good as gone. Felix is injury prone. Murray will be a midway point RB between Jones and Choice.

Nathan (DC)

What about Williams? Did Washington really blow it by not taking Okung?

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

I would much rather have Okung right now, but Williams showed flashes of greatness and has at least as much ability as anyone I listed. We shall see and Williams could really step up huge, but for now, I see a real inconsistent young player.

James (WI)

Reggie Wayne has slowed down to much to make that list?

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

To me, he has. Still a real good player, but right outside that group I mentioned.

Craig (Ontario)

Hey Matt, If you were the Dolphins GM, who would you sign in order to get them back to the post season?

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

I love what Miami has done so far this off season. I agree with sticking with Henne for one more year and seeing what you have. I actually think that the Phins might have the very best D in all of football, but if a starting FS were available, I would be interested. A Vet QB addition is also a must. Add 1 More RB as well.

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

"She's a Beauty" -The Tubes. Wow. My iPod is on FIRE Today. SOOOO Loud. "But don't fall in love..."

Killer (On The Road)

Who's the best WR in the NFC East?

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

Tough one. Gimmie Nicks.

Ryan (WI)

the opening day starter opposite Clay Matthews is?

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

Zombo. Blah, but it didn't work out so bad last year!

christopher k (coral springs)

Pro bowl Packers 2011: WR-GJ, TE-JF, G-JS, C-SW, QB-AR, Defense- CB-TW, CB-CW, S-NC, OLB-CM, NT-BR, P-TM, and pro bowl alternate--ILB-AH!!! u heard it here! 11!

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

Won't give ya AH, but the others I am on board with.

James (WI)

Does Cleveland have ANY shot of being a competitive team this year? or are we still 2-3 years off?

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

I don't think so. Just SO many questions/shortcomings with the passing game. And that DL will very much be a work in progress. Probably 1-5 in the AFC North.

Peyton Manning (Indy)

Just to let everyone know my neck injury was caused from the weight of carring a franchise on my shoulders for the last decade.

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

Very nice. Hope it doesn't reoccur.

MJThrill (Long Island (via Boston))

when DeAngelo Hall makes the pro bowl 3x's, it loses all credibilty.

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

Well yeah, but I do think those GBay suggestions were warranted.

Kenny Britt (Nashville Jail)

Why do you keep saying Nicks is better than me. I am a big play magnet. He just uses those huge hands to catch what ever is thrown to him. Its like comparing me (T-O like) to Jimmy Smith (Nicks)

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

Very high on Britt as well. But I think you are VERY missing the physicality aspects of Nicks' game. Big strong WR who plays that way. Much more trust worthy than Britt now too. Britt might be great very soon though. Not discounting him at all, but he isn't there yet.

Peyton Manning (Indy)

Or, it could have been from lugging around those Sony TVs in every other commercial that gets shown on TV........

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

Cut that meat

James (Hanning)

If a player is arrested for something during the lockout does Goodell still have the power to suspend him when yhe season starts? Tech. players are not employed by the NFL right now.

Matt Williamson
  (12:51 PM)

Not sure on that, but I am guessing Yes.

Scott (SD)

M Dubs - check out what the baseball people are ESPN are doing with that live draft. Who would you pick to start a franchise with? # 1 pick in the NFL. Matty Dubs is on the clock, and he picks........

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

I know nothing about baseball, but I assume we are putting every player into limbo and picking who we want taking into consideration age, etc. The M-Dubbers take Rodgers, Aaron.

Nathan (DC)

Anyone going to give Vernon Gholston another chance? I always thought he was a bad fit for the Jets' D.

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

I agree that he wasn't ever used real well, but most of his busting out was on him. No counter moves. Straight line guy. But yeah, he will get another shot for sure.

Anthony (NYC)

Nicks ahead of Vincent Jackson? Why?

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

Not an easy call. Huge V Jax guy here myself. I think Jackson is more one dimensional though. Needs to expand his dominance of his route tree to the shorter and intermediate routes.

Jason Babin (Nashville)

Even though I wasnt as big of a bust as Gholston I did NOTHING for 6 seasons until Washburn got a hold of me and turned me into the player I should be!

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

Well said Jason. And you were flopped between 3-4 and 4-3 schemes a lot during that time. Hope you go to a team now that uses your skills correctly. Terrific season for you in 2010.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Does Manny Lawson stay in SF, or do you see BB making a move for the pass rusher the Pats did not draft?

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

I keep saying that I LOVE Kiwi to NEng for that role, but have also mentioned Lawson quite a bit to NEng. Doubt he returns to SF. Many teams could use such a 3-4 OLB. How about Zona?

Adam (Jersey)

Aaron Rodgers? Bit of a departure from your blatent Steelers homerism. Kidding, kidding...

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

Easy Big Fella!

Mike (St. Louis)

How dangerous do the Rams seem with the additions of the new offensive coordinator and their draftees?? Gotta be in the hunt this year to take the terrible West right???

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

Def in the hunt. This lockout isn't doing them any favors as they try to get that O installed. But I see the arrow going up on STL.

christopher k (coral springs)

Whats better: Seinfeld, King of Queens, Everybody loves raymond, wonderyears, pawn stars, american pickers, or auction hunters?

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

Wow, quite a mix there! Seinfeld is #1 for sure. Huge Pawn Stars guy here too.

randy (phx)

were do you think vince young might land? wouldnt oakland be perfect for him?

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

It would be. I can buy into Wash too. I still want to see him as Vick's backup once Kolb is dealt.

Stephenson (TB)

Where would Mike Williams fall in the WR category? Very consistent rookie season for a WR.

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

Love him. Wanted to see a little more before ranking him with these big boys. Banging on the door.

Nate (NY)

How does Greg Little compare to fellow UNC alum Hakeem Nicks? They seem like similar players to me. Can he be as good?

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

Plays bigger and even more physical, esp after the catch. Not as refined or as explosive. I think Nicks is the better hand catcher too. Little could be that good, but didn't play last season. Tough to really judge him with that layoff. Will answer again after a preseason game or two.

Adam (Jersey)

"And I peered into the eye of the great fish..." "Mammal." "...whatever"

Matt Williamson
  (1:01 PM)

"Titlest?" Great chat as always folks. Let's do it again next week, shall we? Drop me a line on Twitter @WilliamsonNFL. Take care
