Chat with Dan Graziano

Dan Graziano
  (12:00 PM)

Fire it up, folks. As decided on Twitter, first question this week will be about the Eagles.

Rich (South Jersey)

With the Eagles lack of a power running game, would Marion Barber 3 be a good fit?

Dan Graziano
  (12:01 PM)

I mean, I guess. I just don't see that as a position the Eagles will target. I could see them adding a bigger back for occasional situations that call for it, but why would they want to take carries away from McCoy and Vick? The Eagles' offense may be more finesse than power, but it works for them. I imagine they have other priorities besides finding a power back to provide a changeup for their run game.

st8prop (Atlanta GA)

Here goes.....PFF has ranked Eli Manning tops in the league when it comes to avoiding the sack. Question is...do you attribute that mostly to (1) rushing too many passes to avoid the sack that turn in INTs (2) His brother-like ability to make quick reads (3) aging OL that is not giving Eli time to go through his progressions or (4) a combination of all 3?

Dan Graziano
  (12:04 PM)

My man, st8prop!!! How are ya??? I think Eli gets rid of the ball quickly (like his brother, sure, but not THAT quickly) and he trusts his WRs a lot. But the O-line issues they had last year and the injuries to the WRs probably resulted in him having to get rid of the ball more quickly and recklessly, which could account for the rise in INTs. That answer your question, st8prop? Because you know I promised...

Corey (D.C.)

Do you think DeMarco Murray has a legitimate chance to unseed Felix as the #1 RB in Dallas over time?

Dan Graziano
  (12:05 PM)

Wrote on this topic Thursday. I think Dallas will be at its best when it comes out and says there's no such thing as a No. 1 RB on their team -- that Jones, Choice and Murray all have their roles and their strengths and weaknesses, and that the coaching staff will rotate them as the situation calls for it. Egos must be put aside there.

Logan (Michigan )

Hey Dan today is my Brithday I wish this lockout would end

Dan Graziano
  (12:06 PM)

My birthday in July 20, and I don't think it's ending by then either. But Happy Birthday. I recommend the Dogfish Head 90 minute IPA, assuming you're old enough. If not...Cold Stone Creamery.

Cowboys Fan (Virginia)

Eric Weddle & Michael Huff - do you realistically either one or both in Dallas next season? If one, which is the most likely? Both seem to be upgrades for the Dallas defense.

Dan Graziano
  (12:07 PM)

Yeah, safety is a position they should target -- probably even before they go after Nnamdi. I've heard Huff a lot. Of course, all is just talk right now. He makes sense there.

KingKev (TX)

Who is most likely to start at MLB for Philly?

Dan Graziano
  (12:07 PM)

I think they really liked Jamar Chaney last year.

einsteinhurricane (DC)

I need someone else to get on the TO to the Skins bandwagon. We have a desparate need for a #1 WR that Banks and Armstrong will never be, S. Moss has never been (and we shouldn't expect out of a speed WR at 34) and unless Hankerson has a ridiculous rookie season, there's no way we can expect him to suddenly take that role. Plus despite TO's "poisonous" nature, one thing he's always been praised for is being a good teacher to young WRs, which could only benefit Hankerson. Also, even at his age, CBs still fear TO, which I can't say for anyone else on our roster. Short of a trade for VJax, TO has to be the best option (or at least a good one), right?

Dan Graziano
  (12:08 PM)

He did a lot early on in Cincinnati last year, but man...the Redskins are trying to build something. The QB, whoever it is, will need all the support he can get. As talented as TO is, he's not exactly been the most supportive guy of his QBs through the years. Do you really want to inflict him on John Beck?

Gary (Chicago)

Plaxico would be a better fit in Chicago, don't you think?

Dan Graziano
  (12:09 PM)

Than where? Than Philly? I don't think so. Chicago needs WR help, but their scheme seems to favor speedier ones than Plax. I think he'd fit a very specific role in Philly very nicely.

Bryan (Altoona, PA)

Hey Dan. Just read a article on about a 8 game season this upcoming year. What do you think? 8 games or just cancel the season altogether?

Dan Graziano
  (12:10 PM)

I think 8's better than none, don't you?

Rob (Wilkes-Barre)

Is this a joke? I clicked on Keith Law's chat and got you. Why are you chatting anyway? There will be no football this year.

Dan Graziano
  (12:12 PM)

Hmmmm...not sure what happened there. I can do a baseball question if you want, but I haven't scouted the amateur draft as I'm sure Keith has.

Kenny (Oregon)

I was looking at some stats & WRs with twice as many receptions as DeSean Jackson had less yards

Dan Graziano
  (12:13 PM)

Fewer yards, Kenny. Fewer. Pet peeve of mine, that. However, to your point: Yeah. Lots of em. So why is he only catching 47 balls? He's an incredible weapon. I think they need to use him more.

Shai (NJ)

As a Giants and Plax fan, I HOPE he doesnt go to Philly. I want to root for him upon his return. I think the Rams would be an ideal spot for him for so many reasons. Spags, WR needy, Bradford.

Dan Graziano
  (12:14 PM)

The Rams are WR needy. But I think people are making a mistake if they think Plax is going to come right out of prison and be somebody's No. 1 WR. He may not be any good anymore. He's going to be 34 when (if) the season starts, and the best spot for him would be one where not much is asked of him right away. That's why, while the Rams might come after him, if I were him, I might not want to go there.

Dizzy Dave (Philly)

lets be honest, what are the chances this whole Plaxico bit is a smoke screen to drive up his prices. I'd be much happier if we hurried up n signed Djack n made a real play for Namdi

Dan Graziano
  (12:15 PM)

I can't imagine the Eagles' plans to sign Plaxico and the Eagles' plans to sign DeSean Jackson long-term constitute an either/or scenario. Again, Plax would be for a specific role, and only make sense for the Eagles if he doesn't cost a lot.

Splooz (DC)

Do you think that Danny Snyder is really changing some seats to a "party deck" to save the legendary waiting list or that Skins management sees a way to lower the cost for a fan to attend a game at a high-priced yet craptastic stadium?

Dan Graziano
  (12:15 PM)

I think it's more likely the first thing.

Chris (NJ)

As much as I love the Eagles WRs (and their explosiveness), I feel like there is a definite lack of consistency in their passing game. Do you think they should've added slot receiver or a big solid possession man in the draft?

Dan Graziano
  (12:18 PM)

They are what they are, Chris. Earlier, we talked about how they probably won't add a big back because they so like giving the ball to their littler one. For the same reason, I don't see why they'd draft a more traditional slot or possession WR just because other teams do and throw it to Maclin and Jackson less. Though that big, solid possession man who just walked out of the joint in a Phillies cap yesterday is getting some attention as a potential answer here, no?

Ed (CA)

Why don't you cover more NBA? Thought you were great on 1st take discussing the Finals.

Dan Graziano
  (12:18 PM)

Awwww...sometimes you guys make me blush. Thanks, but I think our NBA guys are pretty good.

Scott (Aberdeen)

The recent post about coaches in the East was ranked by writers at ESPN.But, how do you think the coaches would have ranked if they were sorted by local fan approval ratings (like the president)?

Dan Graziano
  (12:19 PM)

I really wondered about that when I did that post -- whether this would be the poll where fans of the team were LEAST likely to defend their own guy. But the comments and the mailbag didn't reflect that. Maybe most Eagles fans, in spite of the griping you hear, are happy with a guy who wins them 10, 11 games every year. Imagine that!

joe (san antonio tx)

do you you think lebron deserves his ring yet?

Dan Graziano
  (12:21 PM)

Again, not an expert here, but if they win two more games, I believe he and the rest of them will deserve the ring. By definition, no?

Zach (Dc)

Why would someone trade a #1 for Kolb? Losing record as a starter, more picks than tds, and with the job Reid pulled on the skins last year with McNabb how can a GM justify this?

Dan Graziano
  (12:22 PM)

Reid had him as a starter this time last year. It's not a terrible stretch to think another team would view him that way this year. If you were a team that had a lot of pieces in place and felt you were a competent starting QB away from winning a weak division (Arizona?), would you think about trading a first-round pick for a guy you believed could do it? I would.

Robbie (New York)

So if Philly has the most explosive offense in the NFL yet trailed Green Bay in most passing statistics including YPC, passing YPG and touchdown passes, wouldn't that and the two head to head wins in Philly make the Packers offense more explosive?

Dan Graziano
  (12:23 PM)

"Explosive plays" = offensive plays that gain 20 or more yards. Eagles had the most of them. I fail to see how the head-to-head record would impact analysis of those numbers.

Mal (Passaic, New Jerz)

As a fan, is it "wishful thinking" to think the Eagles are the frontrunners for Nhamdi's services?? Or would Brent Grimes, Jonathan Joseph, or Carlos Rogers be a more realistic signing for us?? (I think any of them would be an upgrade at RCB)

Dan Graziano
  (12:24 PM)

It is not wishful thinking. I'm sure they're interested and have a real shot. But so are other teams, so it makes sense to be thinking about backup plans, as I'm sure the Eagles are.

Timothy (Fairfield)

Baseball question: Who's your baseball team?

Dan Graziano
  (12:25 PM)

The Red Raiders. They don't keep score, and the coaches pitch, but my 7 year old insists they're undefeated, and I've seen every game so I have no reason to doubt him.

Nathan (DC)

Do you think that the fact that some of the owners were unaware of the recent talks in Chicago shows a growing division within their ranks?

Dan Graziano
  (12:26 PM)

No, but the fact that the talks occurred at all might show that. Teams are starting to feel pressure from training camp sites to commit, and starting to confront the prospect of lost revenue from preseason games. I imagine some owners are getting antsy, as I'm sure some players are.

st8prop (Atlanta, GA)

DG...you did good so far...let's see if the trend continues. USA Today did their write up on the Giants. I thought I would give the questions and let you answer them:1. Will Eli Manning ever develop into an elite quarterback the way older brother Peyton did?2. Was it the right move when ownership decided to bring back head coach Tom Coughlin for an eighth year?3. How did New York wind up drafting cornerback Prince Amukamara 19th overall when he was projected by some to go much higher?4. How well did the Giants address their needs in the draft?5. What is the first call Reese must make when the lockout ends?

Dan Graziano
  (12:29 PM)

1. Eli's a top 10 QB right now. Not sure if that's 'elite' or not, but he could be the second-best QB of all time and that still might not make him as good as his brother when it's all said and done.2. Yes3. 18 other teams passed. I mean, the Giants didn't pull a Jedi mind trick here. The guy fell in their laps. I love how Jerry Reese gets credit for a "great draft" when all he does is pick the best guy on the board. How hard is that? To ignore need and just read off the top name?4. Not well at all, IMO.5. I think he still needs LB help, but the past two off-seasons have proven that he disagrees with me.Now, st8prop, that's five questions, plus the one I already answered. We good now?

RJ (Jersey)

Is this an NFC East chat or an Eagles chat with some other random questions sprinkled in there. The Giants are starting to get together for player work outs. Its good to see Prince and Jerrel Jernigan in attendance, I think they could become impact players on our team.

Dan Graziano
  (12:30 PM)

No question on Prince. Jernigan is interesting. His skills indicate a guy who could make an instant special teams impact, but he still seems like a project at WR. But sometimes projects pan out.

Cody (Watertown,CT)

who based on your beliefs has the best defense in the east?

Dan Graziano
  (12:31 PM)

Yikes. I guess the Giants, but they all have big holes. I'm not sure the Redskins are more than a piece or two away from being in the discussion.

JaRob (Jersy)

Here, I just moved to New Jersey, will that help in getting a question answered? lol

Dan Graziano
  (12:31 PM)

Might help me hear you better.

Patrick (NYC)

Who would you least like to get hit by in the NFC East? I would go with Brandon Jacobs or Laron landry.

Dan Graziano
  (12:31 PM)

Awesome question. Top of my head, I'm going with Brian Orakpo.

Ben (Philly)

RJ is the infamous crying Giants fan guy from youtube WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Dan Graziano
  (12:32 PM)

I was hoping he was the guy who did the lip sync with 50 Cent.

Evan (NC)

Redskins current D + Aubrayo Franklin Nnamdi = NFL's best?

Dan Graziano
  (12:33 PM)

NFL's best??? Yikes. Steelers might have something to say about that. But those would be big-time additions to a group that's probably better than most people think.

Tony (NY)

What are your thoughts of there being football this year?

Dan Graziano
  (12:34 PM)

I understand Oklahoma is the favorite in the Big 12...

Curt (Westwood, NJ)

Another "wishful thinking" question for you, Dan: Paul Posluszny to the G-Men?

Dan Graziano
  (12:35 PM)

I think that'd be a nice fit...when and if the Giants remember they need linebackers.

Steve (Bristol)

If the Skins can't get some kind of decent return from Albert Haynesworth, do you keep him another year and just bench him? Already paid him most of the money he's owed, and if he's benched he can't hit any incentives. Seems better than having to play against him.

Dan Graziano
  (12:36 PM)

At some point, I imagine they'll be sick of having him around. My guess is they trade him, but if they can't, I imagine they just cut him loose. As you said, they've pretty much already paid the whole contract.

Dan (Philadephia)

Dano, IF there is no football season this year, how would the draft order for 2012 be selected?

Dan Graziano
  (12:37 PM)

Get this question a lot, Dan. The answer is that the NFL has no procedure in place for that yet, because they insist they have no plans to cancel the season.

Chris (NJ)

Do you think that the Eagles will really part with Quentin Mikell? I know they like to cut players loose a year or two too early, but I think they're doing the team a great disservice by releasing a very underrated safety several years too early.

Dan Graziano
  (12:37 PM)

Yeah, all indications are that he's gone, but you're right. He's underrated and a very strong locker room presence who would be missed.

Mal (Passaic, New Jerz)

The tri-state area is running the show in this chat!! We got ya back DG!!!

Dan Graziano
  (12:38 PM)

Yeah, I was just thinking...where are all the Cowboys questions?

Splooz (DC)

When are you and st8prop tying the knot?

Dan Graziano
  (12:39 PM)

I keep asking, but he refuses to commit.

Mr.Scaryy (Work)

How many games will the season be in 2011? And when will training camps start; on time or late?

Dan Graziano
  (12:40 PM)

My guesses: 11 games, and very, very late.

Al (Wausau, WI)

Dan, here's a Cowboys' question for you. How will their first-round draft pick help their offensive line? Might he be a starter, and could this turn that part of the team into a strength?

Dan Graziano
  (12:41 PM)

I believe they drafted him with the intention of starting him right away, yes. And while I doubt one rookie player turns a weakness into a strength, I think it was the right move for them in the first round and will surely help move things in that direction.

ImAlwaysXclusive (Fort Washington MD)

How do you grade your stay so far here in the Beast???

Dan Graziano
  (12:42 PM)

Oh, straight A's across the board.

BSB (Philly)

Is this the year the NFL learns the name Antonio Dixon.

Dan Graziano
  (12:42 PM)

Yeah, seen his name a few times in those "breakout player" lists. Could be a big year for him. And they could use one.

Shane (Los Angeles, CA)

If the Eagles trade Kolb, does Vince Young make sense? On the Eagles' side you get a young QB with a similar skill set to Vick's; from Young's perspective, you get to carry a clipboard under what I consider to be the best QB coaching tandem in the league in Reid and Morhinweg.

Dan Graziano
  (12:43 PM)

Yes, I believe Vince Young makes a ton of sense as Vick's backup in Philly if they trade Kolb.

Cowboysfan98182 (DC)

Graz, Recent reports have stated that Rookie RT Tyron Smith gained roughly 20 pounds of muslce between the last game of the season and the combine/pro day measurements. My question is do you think it is legitimate that a 20 year old working with a nutritionist and professional trainers concentrating on nothing else but getting his measurables up or should we suspect foul play, i.e. PEs as some raging horses might suggest?!

Dan Graziano
  (12:45 PM)

I don't want to keep ignoring your question, but it's tough to speculate on something like this. There are words like "reports" and "roughly." I mean, is it easier to believe if it was only 15 pounds? I'd hate to cast aspersions on a 20-year-old kid. My inclination would be to say that he ate a lot. But as I said, I have no idea.

Nick (NJ)

Is Hakeem Nicks the best WR in the Beast?

Dan Graziano
  (12:45 PM)

Not yet, but I think he's one healthy year away from being able to make that case.

ImAlwaysXclusive (Fort Washington MD)

Oh and Thanks for being on time this week! Awesome!..... One more question for you. Of the Cowboys players currently on the Roster who needs to step up the most to make them contenders again?

Dan Graziano
  (12:46 PM)

So....many....candidates....I'll say Anthony Spencer. If he plays the way he did in 2009, the defense improves dramatically. Not BLAMING him for what happened last year, mind you. Just saying he's the kind of talent who could make a major difference when he's at his absolute best.

Cannon (DC)

Vince Young is the next high profile low performing FA the Redskins sign?

Dan Graziano
  (12:47 PM)

I do not think it make sense for the Redskins or anyone else to sign Young as a starter at this point.

Chris (NJ)

Do you have any inkling of what the new D-scheme for the Eagles is going to be like? I keep hearing the word "simpler" getting thrown around, but I haven't really heard much else about it. Still Blitz-heavy like Jim Johnson's D of old (improved D-Line with Washburn would make sense) or do you sense something different?

Dan Graziano
  (12:49 PM)

LOL. I think we hear "simpler" because they gave the coordinator's job to an offensive line coach! But seriously, if I were running the Eagles' defense, I'd lean hard on Washburn's work up front and try and build something that takes fewer risks. They've really lived for the turnover the past few years, and while that can work (Saints 2009?), we've seen them get burned a few times.

Mike (NJ)

Will the Giants make the playoffs in 2011?

Dan Graziano
  (12:49 PM)

If they can at least split the head-to-head series with the Eagles this time, I say yes. But that's a big IF!

Randy (Oh)

youre an eagles fan arent you?

Dan Graziano
  (12:51 PM)

No

Weech (Santa Barbara, CA)

Dan, I thought on saw you on Real Housewives of New Jersey last night. Was that you? (nevermind that I was watching this show)

Dan Graziano
  (12:51 PM)

No

Dan Graziano
  (12:52 PM)

No

Curt (Westwood, NJ)

Who is more likely to break out in 2011: Brandon Graham or Jason Pierre-Paul?

Dan Graziano
  (12:52 PM)

I'll say Pierre-Paul, since I think he's probably healthier right now.

Dan Graziano
  (12:53 PM)

And no, Weech. No.

Kip (Florida)

What are the chances Mike Vick stays healthy all year?

Dan Graziano
  (12:53 PM)

41 percent

Mike (New Jersey)

Does signing Nnamdi, Jenkins and maybe trading for Kyle Orton or offering the bengals an offer they can"t refuse for Carson Palmer make sense for the Redskins? And do u see them drafting Andrew Luck next year?

Dan Graziano
  (12:55 PM)

Well, I think those plans are mutually exclusive. If they're thinking about Luck for next year, why invest in Orton or Palmer this year? I think the first-round QBs in the 2012 draft are part of the reason the Skins might stick with Beck for a year.

Hog.Brew (Austin)

What's Lorenzo Alexander's role with the Skins with the Kerrigan pick? I love his versatility and tenacity.

Dan Graziano
  (12:56 PM)

Yeah, he's apparently been working at inside LB during these player workouts, which means he's smart. It'll be interesting to see if the coaches buy him there.

Randy (OH)

How many teams will make the playoffs in the East this year?

Dan Graziano
  (12:56 PM)

Two

Joe (NJ)

Will Prince Amukamara beat out Terrell Thomas for the #2 cornerback?

Dan Graziano
  (12:56 PM)

No, not right away. I think they'll both be part of a rotation.

Weech (Santa Barbara, CA)

Haha, good to know. All kidding aside, Dan, looking onto 2011, Dallas MUST establish a run identity. IMO, Dallas isn't the pound the rock type of running team. Having said this, Dallas needs to establish some sort of run identity that needs to be stuck to throughout the season. If you ask me, the onus is on Jason Garrett to get the backfield to believe in their running philosophy and get all of the backs to buy into it. Only then can there be success on the ground.

Dan Graziano
  (12:57 PM)

What he said.

Dez Bryant (Dallas)

Dan are you the only person in the world I don't owe money to?

Dan Graziano
  (12:57 PM)

You don't remember that $5 I lent you?

Big Poppa (NoVA)

Closer to restoring glory: Cowboys or Redskins?

Dan Graziano
  (12:57 PM)

Cowboys.

Joe (NYC)

You really thing Dan Snyder allows the SKins to tank so they have a shot at Luck?? Doubtful!!!!

Dan Graziano
  (12:58 PM)

To be clear: I never said they'd tank, and I don't believe they will. But if you don't like the 2011 QB options outside of your own roster, and you do like the 2012 options, why not stick with what you have, build up elsewhere, conserve your picks and assets and fix QB next year? It's not a crazy plan, and I don't think it constitutes "tanking."

Big Poppa ((NoVA))

When di the Redskins have glory?

Dan Graziano
  (12:59 PM)

Big Poppa is a funny name for a 15-year-old.

joey (oradell nj)

Baseball Question: Do you think Jeter is overrated?

Dan Graziano
  (1:00 PM)

Jeter will be a worthy Hall of Famer, but yes, I think he's overrated. He's not a Gold Glove shortstop and never was, but he has several of those awards. Of all the players I've ever covered in any sport, though, he's among the toughest and most single-minded. I always felt he was great enough without people adding on extra, inaccurate claims about things like his defense.

Dan Graziano
  (1:00 PM)

OK, Five more questions, and no more baseball or hoops.

Chaosist (Troy, NY)

Who do you think has more TDs this season: Eli, Romo, or Vick?Nicks, Maclin, or Bryant?

Dan Graziano
  (1:01 PM)

Eli and Nicks.

Dustin (NC)

Whos is the East best WR? Dez will have something to say about Nicks being the best...should be fun to watch over the next couple of years.

Dan Graziano
  (1:02 PM)

I agree. Dez is an incredible talent. Right now I think the best WR in the division is probably DeSean Jackson, though we've discussed his flaws. Miles Austin not far behind, even off a down year.

john (NJ)

Is Bradshaw the best runningback in the beast?

Dan Graziano
  (1:03 PM)

No. LeSean McCoy is.

Al (Wausau, WI)

My birthday is Sept. 24. . Do you think football will be in action by then?

Dan Graziano
  (1:04 PM)

I would not bet on the regular season starting by then.

Mal (Passaic, New Jerz)

How do you all leave out Action Jackson and Maclin when discussing the "best"in the division?? Maclin will have over 1200 receiving yards if there is a full season. Quote me on that DG!!

Dan Graziano
  (1:04 PM)

Done.

Dan Graziano
  (1:04 PM)

OK, three more. So I lied.

Joe (NYC)

DeSean Jackson needs to go over the middle to be considered the best... Agree??

Dan Graziano
  (1:05 PM)

No, but I think he should catch more than 47 balls next year if he wants to hold the title.

Santana Moss (Wash)

Just because I'm 100yrs old doesn't mean I can't be the best WR in the Beast.

Dan Graziano
  (1:05 PM)

Wow. Guess it's Santana's birthday too!

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Heard this question posed on Mike and Mike: more likely that Plaxico or Tiki comes back to contribute and why?

Dan Graziano
  (1:05 PM)

Plaxico. Because it's more likely someone can stand him.

Andy (TX)

Chances of a Beck breakout year?

Dan Graziano
  (1:05 PM)

29 percent

David (Montville (NJ))

Is Eli Manning athletic?

Dan Graziano
  (1:06 PM)

I mean, what kind of question? He's an NFL quarterback, right?

Jose (NJ)

you were late last week so you gotta stay till 1:30

Dan Graziano
  (1:07 PM)

Can't stay till 1:30, but I'll do...four more.

Kurt (Pa)

Do you think Romo has the potential to be a Super Bowl QB this season?... and if not how many seasons do you think it will take him?

Dan Graziano
  (1:08 PM)

I do, but the defense has to make a big comeback.

Derek (NJ)

Will Matt Dodge get his act together this year?

Dan Graziano
  (1:08 PM)

Oof. Good question. Can you imagine what it was like for Jeff Feagles to watch that from the sidelines?

Chaosist (Troy, NY)

Do you think more of Eli Manning's leadership skills now that there are 35 guys working out at "Camp Eli" in Bergen, NJ?

Dan Graziano
  (1:09 PM)

No. My opinion remains unchanged by today's events. But it was never as low as you seem to believe it was. I like Eli. I think he's terribly underrated. I think 20+ teams would love to have him, and the Giants are one of them.

Joe (NYC)

This chat has run it's course... Agree??

Dan Graziano
  (1:10 PM)

Assuming you mean "its course," (another pet peeve), yes. Until next week, people. It's been real.
