Chat with AJ Mass

AJ Mass
 (10:59 AM)

Good morning gang! Back yet again for another 60 minutes of fantasy chattage... Second cup of coffee is in hand. Who pray tell is up first?

Travis (Baltimore)

Better pitcher ROS: James Shield or Roy Oswalt?

AJ Mass
 (11:01 AM)

Shields. I think Oswalt is going to have really great days, and not-so-great days.

Gary (Omaha)

Uggla. Seriously. Will he turn it around this year?

AJ Mass
 (11:02 AM)

He seems to think so -- which I suppose is better news than if he was saying, "I stink." But I'm not sticking around to find out.

Mike (Chicago)

Ubaldo top 10 SP going forward?

AJ Mass
 (11:03 AM)

I don't think I will trust Ubaldo that much... but certainly he should rise quite a bit in the rankings over the next few months.

Dan Haren (LA)

What was up with my velocity last night.. I was barely breaking 90, way too many pitches around 85

AJ Mass
 (11:05 AM)

The start was moved back to yesterday due to back spasms... clearly Haren was still not 100 percent. I'm not that concerned long-term.

Bon Wa (Quebec)

Great job on the podcast yesterday, I hope to hear more from you on it. How do you feel about this trade:Kemp, Tabata, Gio Gonzalez for Roy Halladay, Chase Utley, Jeff Francouer?

AJ Mass
 (11:06 AM)

Appreciate the kind words... EK and I had tons of fun... top hitter for top pitcher. I'd say it's pretty fair if the need is there on both sides.

alan (LA)

what are you thoughts on phil humber? Currently 28th on the player rater for SP.

AJ Mass
 (11:07 AM)

Moved him from spot-starter to "leave him in" and think he has tons of growth still in him.

Goonga (OCNJ)

When you say "I'm not sticking around to find out" regarding Uggla...does that mean you're dropping him or just trading him for a bag of potato chips? Isn't he too valuable to give up without compensation. I'm hanging on til the bitter end in my h2h league...just hoping he can do something by playoff time.

AJ Mass
 (11:09 AM)

In general, I always want to trade rather than cut... but the market will only bear what the market will bear... and bench size will dictate how many guys you can stash on hope.

Scott (Chicago)

Better 2B replacement for Allen Craig for the week. Justin Turner or Freddy Sanchez?

AJ Mass
 (11:10 AM)

I'd roll with Turner. Apart from the clutch hits of Sanchez, he's been ordinary.

John (NYC)

AJ, big fan of your chats! Quick question here. Would you trade Morse for Ichiro? Thanks!

AJ Mass
 (11:12 AM)

If steals are the issue, then perhaps... but as long as Morse is hitting .280+, he's got more overall value.

Nate (Boston)

do you start harang tomorrow?

AJ Mass
 (11:13 AM)

Just finished up DN before the chat... it's a lousy matchup -- but I would, given his success in PetCo.

Roy (Philly)

Fantasy Wind Chime, drop 1 in a 10-team H2H: Rios, Vlad, or Vernon Wells.

AJ Mass
 (11:14 AM)

LOL. Somebody downloaded and listened! Have to keep Vlad. I'd probably say goodbye to Vernon.

Matt (Work)

One word answer: Figgins, Chipper, J Uribe or Wiggy? Thnx!

AJ Mass
 (11:15 AM)

Lloyd (Park Slope)

AJ, your idiosyncratic voice is always a pleasure to have in the chat. Question: are these pitchers worth owning before Wandy: Colon, Gee, Humber, Vogelsong? Thanks so much.

AJ Mass
 (11:17 AM)

<--- blushing. For rest of season, I'd say yes to all of them.

Robert (Chicago, Il)

Discuss Mike Carp please!!!!! Worth add???

AJ Mass
 (11:19 AM)

In AL-only or deeper leagues, yes. He's been up to the bigs before, but needs to play consistently in LF to merit the PT for fantasy.

J (philly)

Do you think Asdrubal Cabrera can keep this up and finishes the year as the #1 short stop...what kind of numbers do you project for him.

AJ Mass
 (11:20 AM)

I'd rather have Reyes or Tulo -- but No. 3 SS I think is reasonable to hope for... if power continues, and I think to some extent it does... he's there.

Mike (Milwaukee)

What are your thoughts on Alexi Ogando? He's ranked pretty low relative to how he's performed.

AJ Mass
 (11:22 AM)

I have him ranked No. 20 right now -- not a ton of K's relative to others in top ranks, and he's 6-5 in terms of wins versus not wins. (I'm not talking losses, but you either get the win or you don't.)

Dave (Long Island)

Who would you rather have the remainder of the year: Mark Trumbo or Justin Smoak?

AJ Mass
 (11:23 AM)

It's close, but I'd go with Smoak.

Paul (NY)

You worried about Jed Lowrie's shoulder? He was dropped and seems better than my replacement level MI's, but I'm worried about the injury...

AJ Mass
 (11:25 AM)

Well, he's not used to playing every day, and now that Marco is back, he won't have to -- he can rest when he's dinged up. I think we'll know better after an MRI...

Ben (Boston)

Jacoby a top 5 OF ROS?

AJ Mass
 (11:27 AM)

I'm going to say no... but secretly, you know I hope he is. Really though, too much of his value is locked up in SB, and at some point as season moves on, those may not be as important to a fantasy team.

Brian (Boston, MA)

Does Sergio Santos finsh the season as a top-ten closer?

AJ Mass
 (11:29 AM)

I think he does... still walking far too many guys, but no reason to expect him to lose gig any more than others at the moment.

Hank (Dallas)

Time to sell high on Granderson? Would you trade him for Choo & Billingsley?

AJ Mass
 (11:31 AM)

Some regression expected, but I think I'd hold on to him.

C. Granderson (New York)

I'd hold on to you too AJ. Never let go.

Gary (Omaha)

If you were drafting today, where would you take Kemp? Top3?

AJ Mass
 (11:33 AM)

Probably not - I know I'd have Miggy and Bautista higher and push comes to shove I take Braun before him as well -- but he's definitely a first rounder.

Tom (NYC)

Volquez & Zimmerman pitched well last night, Drop Colby Lewis for either? Rank for ROS please

AJ Mass
 (11:36 AM)

For Zimm absolutely. As for Edinson, I need to see him do it again -- and maybe twice more -- before I buy in.

Phil (Phoenixville, PA)

General rule as to when you start playing for next year in a roto keeper? Choo/Crawford/Dunn/Rios have me in 9th, last in's a mess.

AJ Mass
 (11:37 AM)

Figure out how much you're losing ground/gaining ground in each category per week. When it becomes clear that no amount of trading will overcome that steady gap, you can look ahead.

Pujols (StL)

Only Miggy and Bautista before Kemp? What about me??? 5 homers in the last 4.

AJ Mass
 (11:39 AM)

Didn't say *only* -- but I only needed two names to push Kemp out of top 3.

Lyndon (Waltham)

Is there any significant difference between mitch moreland and alex gordon?

AJ Mass
 (11:40 AM)

Yes. Moreland doesn't fan as much and has hit for a higher average -- slightly more power too. Gordon *has been* more valuable... Moreland *will be* more valuable.

Brett (Belleville, IL)

Thoughts on the extent of the Anderson injury?

AJ Mass
 (11:42 AM)

Can't be good, given his DL history and now that the "Dr. James Andrews" name has been dropped by Geren? Uh-oh.

jonathan (nyc)

Konerko vs. Gaby Sanchez ROS

AJ Mass
 (11:44 AM)

I have a little more faith in Konerko, but in the end, I don't see a ton of difference between their final lines.

Douglas (Pittsburgh)

AJ, the Pirates are only a game under .500!!! Which SP's are you buying?

AJ Mass
 (11:46 AM)

I like Karstens best of the rotation longterm... only Morton has a chance at staying close to current output.

Max (Concord, CA)

Guerra, Guerrier or Crow?

AJ Mass
 (11:47 AM)

Crow's got the most upside - even with Soria reclaiming closer's job for now... I like Guerrier a bit more than Guerra.

dom (bay area)

Boesch or frenchy ROS?

AJ Mass
 (11:49 AM)

Boesch... I like a lot of the Tigers OF.

Nick (Indy)

Austin Jackson has been surprisingly not terrible: is he worth a pick-up?

AJ Mass
 (11:49 AM)

...but not that much! LOL.

Tom (NJ)

How badly did I lose in a Weaver for Hanley trade? Will Hanley return to elite status after coming off the DL?

AJ Mass
 (11:50 AM)

I think you lost, but as I've said repeatedly, I still think Han-Ram can hit .300 ROS if he heals up and doesn't come back too soon.

Scott (TX)

Karabell figures Moustakas could be up this week. Thoughts? Given that I picked him up yesterday I'd love to hear concurrence...

AJ Mass
 (11:52 AM)

I believe with the "Super 2" deadline no longer starting clocks, we'll see a lot of these guys in the next few weeks -- the Moose, the Ackley, etc.

Paul (Chicago)

Is Ichiro a guy I can bench from time to time based on matchups, or do I just need to roll with him?

AJ Mass
 (11:53 AM)

If you need HR, then you can bench him freely... he's somehow still a top 50 hitter this season, even with his struggles, though, so he's not *washed up* by any means.

Brandon (Phoenix, Az)

No Daily Notes up for Wednesday though there are morning games? Poor form ESPN!

AJ Mass
 (11:54 AM)

Dude. They've been up since yesterday:

AJ Mass
 (11:55 AM)

And Thursday's are already up:

Brian (Ireland)

Is Longoria injured or sick?? Oblique again or dodgy shellfish?

AJ Mass
 (11:56 AM)

Apparently there's a flu going around the TB clubhouse -- first it hit BJ, now Evan... S-Rod had it too.

Tarr (Orlando)

Got your book bookmarked on Amazon to purchase. Am I going to be happy or sad after I read it?

AJ Mass
 (11:57 AM)

Happy you read it... Sad you have finished it?

Nick (Indy)

Is Capps ever gonna lose his job? I wanna drop him already!

AJ Mass
 (11:59 AM)

I like Capps personally... not my top choice for a closer, but rarely gets himself in jams via the walk.

Joe (Chicago)

Ryan Dempster shouldn't be anywhere near my starting lineup tonight, correct?

AJ Mass
 (12:00 PM)

Just go change that E to a U.

Jerome (Cleveland)

Narveson...hold or drop? I can't decide..

AJ Mass
 (12:01 PM)

I'd hold on to Chris, but only if had the bench spots... I'm not throwing him out there just yet... I merely have hope.

AJ Mass
 (12:01 PM)

That's the whistle... thanks for the Q's... I shall be back on Friday at 11, and there's always the Twitter. Until then, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor...
