Chat with AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (10:59 AM)

Good morning gang... we're back yet again for another sixty minutes of fantasy chattage. Second cup of coffee is well in hand. Who, pray tell, is up first?

Logan (NC)

Call-ups question: Who do you like more this year, Rizzo or Moustakas? Thanks!

AJ Mass
  (11:01 AM)

Plenty of Rizzo or Moustakas Q's in the queue... my feeling is that both will have impact this season, but Mous a little bit more. Rizzo's home park a factor, as well as the fact he *may* sit against tough LHP.

Jose Bautista (Batting Cage)

Am I still the number 1 player?

AJ Mass
  (11:02 AM)

ROY, yes. YTD, Kemp and Braun are slightly ahead.

Tom Tuttle (Tacoma)

Where is the cut-off between 3B you would drop in favor of Moustakas and those you wouldn't? Is McGehee above or below?

AJ Mass
  (11:03 AM)

Casey definitely below... I think I'd draw the line right around Chipper.

Jeff (ME)

Do you know anything about Martin Prado's knee? He has missed a couple games now, but there really hasn't been much out there about the injury. Can you enlighten us?

AJ Mass
  (11:05 AM)

He probably sits today, but expect him to play this weekend -- doesn't appear to be anything more than a day-to-day thing.

John (Cincinnati)

I need a spot start tonight...Gee @ Pitt, or E. Jackson vs Oak

AJ Mass
  (11:06 AM)

As always, that's what Daily Notes is for: http://sports.espn.go.com/fantasy/baseball/flb/dailynotes?page=mlbnotes110610 We like the Gee-Force today.

Brian (IN)

Is Bourgeois gonna start regularly?

AJ Mass
  (11:07 AM)

I think so... all over the outfield and some 2B... probably 5 games/week as long as he hits.

Brent (MI)

Do you see Carpenter turning his year around? I'm looking to target him in a trade.

AJ Mass
  (11:09 AM)

A few extra wins, and he rises around 40 spots in value to date. I don't think there's all that much he needs to do differently.

JB (SC)

Would you rather have Tulo or Votto the rest of the way in a vacuum?

AJ Mass
  (11:10 AM)

Votto, but of course, if we did play in a vacuum, both their heads would explode.

garrett (D.C.)

Do you think Johnny Venters will eventually take over the closer role at some point this season

AJ Mass
  (11:11 AM)

No. I think it's basically Kimbrel's job, but there may be week-long stretches where they flip-flop just to keep both arms fresh.

Hank (Lone Star State)

Ranks these Rangers starters ROS: Wilson, Lewis, Ogando

AJ Mass
  (11:12 AM)

Ogando, Wilson, big space, Lewis

Frank (Pa)

AJ, how would you rank these SP,s moving foward? Danks, Lewis, Baker, Wandy - Thanks.

AJ Mass
  (11:14 AM)

Wandy, Baker, Lewis, Danks.

Steven (NC)

Dee Gordon is starting now, what about when Furcal returns?

AJ Mass
  (11:15 AM)

When? How about *if*? Could be another month before Furcal is ready, and by then, we'll have a much better clue as to whether Gordon is ready. If I had to guess, I'd say Gordon gets sent back down, at least for a short time...

Greg (Chicago, IL)

Are ESPN rankings (May rankings, Hit parade, etc) theoretically complied with players in a vacuum or do the settings of ESPN leagues affect valuation? Are OF valued higher because 5 of them are required?

AJ Mass
  (11:17 AM)

Probably a better question for Tristan, who handles the thankless job of those Hit Parade rankings... but the rankings are for ROY, and always based on ESPN Standard, unless clearly stated otherwise.

Jon (Albany)

What is there to watch during the summer? I can't seem to get into anything that is not sports related. Any suggestions?

AJ Mass
  (11:18 AM)

Big Brother on July 7. That's always fun... and I enjoy SYTYCD because it's a reality competition show that actually rewards talent above all else.

Tony (Cali)

Please rank these OFs for me the ROS: D Young, Ludwick, Rajai, Span, Boesch

AJ Mass
  (11:20 AM)

Brennan, Denard, Ryan, Davis, jar of pickles, Young.

Cat Deeley (Hollywood)

Thank you.

AJ Mass
  (11:21 AM)

Just keep smiling at those jeedgjzzzses.

Don (Ct)

Can Jeff Karstens provide any significant rotation help?

AJ Mass
  (11:22 AM)

I like him better than any other Pirates pitcher. Certainly can help if you pick and choose starts wisely.

Joey Bag of Donuts (don't worry about it)

everyone always asks for the best player, who's the worst regular? I nominate Ryan Raburn for your consideration.

AJ Mass
  (11:23 AM)

Minimum 40 GP... Reid Brignac, hands down.

Luke (Tampa)

Please specify the type of pickles. If we are talking a new dill I agree. Old dill then I actually rank young ahead of it.

kd (ATL)

What kind of bat is Kimbrel worth in an NL only league?

AJ Mass
  (11:25 AM)

If the guy needs saves, you can easily leverage a guy like Ryan Howard.

Jay (Chicago)

What should we expect from Alfonso Soriano when he comes off the disabled list? Thanks!

AJ Mass
  (11:26 AM)

Exactly what he gave you before. Some bursts of power and a lot of K's.

Phil (Kansas City, MO)

Ethics question. As a commish, how long do you give an owner who has an activated player still in his DL spot? He is well aware and trying to make trades so he doesn't have to drop anyone.

AJ Mass
  (11:28 AM)

This is why we have a constitution, so that you can point to the rule and say, "You've got 48 hours..." I do like the idea of allowing some wiggle room to let owners try and deal. Still without a rule in place, he's within his rights to wait.

B.O. (Sacramento)

A.J. How much weight do you give the QR when you are determining your daily pitching rankings? And how much do you consider win potential in your rankings? (I know.. "never chase wins") Thanks

AJ Mass
  (11:29 AM)

I use my own rankings of value to date, and combine them with the QR... probably about 50-50. Then I tweak based on things like "facing Vin Mazzaro, so he has better chance at W"

Shawn (Detroit)

Jonathon Niese...Top 40 pitcher ROS??

AJ Mass
  (11:31 AM)

Nope. Although, I like him as a decent No. 5 fantasy option -- still, that's barely above streaming status.

Jim (Toronto)

Love your overreactions. How long do you think it'll be until you boldly announce that Jay Bruce is #1 ROY?

AJ Mass
  (11:32 AM)

Not sure where this is coming from. Jim. I did say Jose was No. 1 ROY...

Steve (Nc)

Do you get annoyed when people offer you garbage for your stars?

AJ Mass
  (11:33 AM)

I'm far more annoyed when people don't respond to offers I make to them. At least a lowball offer can be a starting point for negotiations...

AJ Mass
  (11:33 AM)

I'm far more annoyed when people don't respond to offers I make to them. At least a lowball offer can be a starting point for negotiations...

Tom (NJ)

Is Hellickson really this good?

AJ Mass
  (11:34 AM)

Short answer is yes... and if he cuts down on the BB's, he could be much better.

Dave (Houston)

In your leagues, are there guys on your team you ABSOLUTELY will not trade? If you had Prince or Kemp right now, would you hold till a cool down or sell high for any equal trade?

AJ Mass
  (11:36 AM)

Everyone has to be available for the right price. Otherwise, you've already handcuffed your ability to win. It just has to be the right price...no matter how hot/cold a player currently is.

Billy (NYC)

Drop either Collmenter or Humber?

AJ Mass
  (11:38 AM)

Again, depends on for who... if you're asking me to choose one or the other, I stick with Humber. Especially with Peavy DL-d again and less likelihood he leaves rotation.

Hans (Unknown)

Hello AJ. I'm working on my can-answer-all-fantasy-questions-inator, but am still missing one part. Until it comes in, would you drop Jed Lowrie or Vlad for Moustakas to cover 3B until Zimmerman's oblique heals?

AJ Mass
  (11:40 AM)

I'd drop Vlad and give Mous a try... but dude, while I appreciate the attempt at the reference -- get it right! It's Heinz, not Hans.

Micky (Maryland)

Hamels is an animal, and you better acknowledge it because he may just win the Cy this year

AJ Mass
  (11:41 AM)

Can't argue with the first part, as all humans are indeed animals. As for the second, I still think it's Doc's to lose... but it will be close.

Agent P (Tri-State Area)

Chhh-chhh-chhhh!

Joe (Reno)

What do you expect from Angel Pagan ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:42 AM)

A decent amount of SB, and little else.

Eric (Chicago)

AJ, go back to science class...Humans are mammals!

AJ Mass
  (11:43 AM)

This is the future of America, gang. I weep.

Jake (Nebraska)

Helton or Moustakas for CI spot?

AJ Mass
  (11:44 AM)

Helton. Unless we're talking keeper league, there's no reason to give up stats like that on *hope*.

Randy (Chicago)

Ok so Ogando has a legit chance at the CY young this year right? It gives me Ogandasms just thinking about it

AJ Mass
  (11:46 AM)

Calm it down... he's in the mix right now, but let's see how a long Texas summer treats him...

Scott (Scottsdale)

What are your thoughts on Scherzer ROY? Reminds me of Wandy a bit, in terms of streakiness.

AJ Mass
  (11:48 AM)

Way too erratic... it's really all about the K's with Max. If he didn't have those, and his record was 4-4 with that same 4.68 ERA, would he even be in the conversation?

Bill (MD)

Rank these (non-Freak) Giants SPs the rest of the way: Cain, Bumgarner, and Vogelsong

AJ Mass
  (11:49 AM)

This may shock and surprise, but: Ryan, Matt, Madison.

Ernie (MN)

Am I the only one who thinks that Derek Holland is on the cusp of something big? I think he's very under the radar in fantasy and now would be the time to get him while you can.

AJ Mass
  (11:50 AM)

I think you very well may be... hard to get too excited over a 4.50 ERA and 3+ walks per game.

Tom (NJ)

Can you justify putting Vogelsong ahead of Cain?

AJ Mass
  (11:54 AM)

Don't get me wrong... it's not by a huge margin, but I've seen Cain's body of work and expect a little bit of a decline.

Kevin (NY)

Would you stash Ackley if you own Uggla?

AJ Mass
  (11:55 AM)

In a heartbeat.

Patrick (Columbia, SC)

Better chance of getting called up this year...Lawrie, Jennings, or Montero?

AJ Mass
  (11:56 AM)

All get the call. Lawrie would be up if not for the injury... the other two will certainly see September.

Jeff S. (Vermont)

Dunn last night.... reason to be hopeful, or just an anomaly

AJ Mass
  (11:58 AM)

Nobody said Dunn would retire without ever hitting another HR. One game means little...

Pat (NJ)

So Jennings won't be up before September?

AJ Mass
  (12:00 PM)

When he didn't get the call after Manny left - and then again after Fuld collapsed... I think that spoke volumes.

DB (Oakland)

Just traded for Ichiro - he's gotta turn it around at some point, right?

AJ Mass
  (12:00 PM)

No, no he doesn't.

Matt (NJ)

Charlie Morton: Bonafied, or Bonafacio?

AJ Mass
  (12:03 PM)

I'd go with Bonafacio. He is what his value has been...

AJ Mass
  (12:03 PM)

That's the whistle, gang. Have a great weekend, and feel free to find me on the Twitter. Until the next time, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
