Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
 (11:59 AM)

Greetings all. How are we doing? Thanks for coming...

Rich (New Jersey)

Jacksonville teams owners said the Jaguars have no plans on moving to Los Angeles. From what I've read the Jaquars have few sellouts in years past, do see them moving or will someone else go to L.A.?

Paul Kuharsky
 (11:59 AM)

An existing team to LA is not a guarantee. LA guy is pulling out all the stops to make it seem like it is.

Cheesehead Sports Nut (Chicago, IL)

Every year a team finishes the previous season well but misses the playoffs only to make the playoffs the following year. Everyone is clamoring for the Detroit Lions to be that team next year but I still think the Lions are too thin in the secondary to make the playoffs. I say the Texans are the surprise playoff team in 2011, who do you see being the surprise playoff team next year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:00 PM)

The Lions can still address their secondary in free agency, no? I think the Raiders could break through.

Cheesehead Sports Nut (Chicago, IL)

With all the talk of Mark Cuban saying that rings are "outdated" should the Packers give a few different types of jewelry to preempt Cuban and be the first team to give out something besides rings?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:00 PM)

Absolutely not.

Chioke Hassan (Baltimore,Md)

Dear PaulIs Kerry Collins going to retire?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:01 PM)

That is not his intention, no.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:02 PM)

With regard to all these questions about records and finishes and MVPs: I need to see free agency before I have a good feel for where I think teams are heading. A team like Jacksonville is far from finished doing what it plans to do personnel-wise.

Kevin G. (Jacksonville, FL)

I keep hearing about Eric Weddle and Paul Posluzny being fits for the Jaguars in free agency (whenever it starts). I can see Posluzny leaving Buffalo to play in a 4-3 somwhere else, but concerning Weddle, why San Diego want to lose him if he's really that good? Side note: if you've not heard the new My Morning Jacket release, "Circuital", you absolutely must go get it. Best album of 2011 so far.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:03 PM)

Why would Weddle want to leave? The same reason any free agent leaves. A bigger contract.

James (Indiana)

Give us something fans would find interesting that you know about the Colts that is not common knowledge.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:03 PM)

They may be working on extensions for some assistant coaches.

Dominic (Houghton, MI)

On the Top 10 Defensive Players you happened to rank Darrele Revis #6? Could you please give me a reason why, because thats a little low for someone with his productivity.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:04 PM)

Because guys in the front seven influence games more. Revis can make an offense avoid his side of the field, but has no impact on the other areas. A pass rusher or rangy linebacker can affect more.

TwoToneBlueBlood (Murfreesboro)

If the players and owners can agree on a number, is there anything to keep them from lifting the lockout while the lawyers draw up the contracts and get the details finalized so they can get the season started? Do you think they would do that? I think the earlier you start free agency, undrafted free agency, and signing draft pics the better.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:06 PM)

I think it'll be lifted once there is a solid handshake deal, sure. But there doesn't have to be a mad rush. There can still be plenty of time for free agency and camps. Free agency doesn't have to start the second after both sides say "We agree."

Sports Zone Listener (Nashville, TN)

Hey Paulie - when it's all said and done, is Jeff Fisher a Hall of Fame coach?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:06 PM)

With is resume right now? Absolutely not. If you're asking will he resume his career and become one? Having no idea where he resumes his career and what resources he has, I can't say.

Joe (Jacksonville, FL)

Even though it's tough to tell based on the lack of an offseason, do you see the Jags standing pat on their defensive ends and allowing having a Lane and Mincey rotation?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:07 PM)

Considering how much bigger the holes are at linebacker and safety, probably.

JD (Houston)

Do you think Demico Ryans will return to pre-injury form?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:08 PM)

I think that's a lot to expect, at least in the first year.

TwoToneBlueBlood (Murfreesboro)

The article about the Titans games being broadcast on satellite radio said their home game will be broadcast. What about away games?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:08 PM)

No idea. I presume they are now in line with everyone else.

Taylor (CA)

Assuming the Titans don't resign Babin, they can't just stick with Ball and Hayes and be satisfied right?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:10 PM)

Ball is also unsigned, and Ford may become a FA. I'd take Morgan, Hayes and Ball as my top three and be happy. And Jones may be out there, in which case that's a very solid four.

Awayne (Indy)

Do you see J.Saturday as the only returning starter on Colts O-line?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:10 PM)

We can hope. I could see Johnson starting at guard.

Boogieman (Your Closet) [via mobile]

Why should we believe that Gary Kubiak shall break the mold and get that Texans team to the playoffs?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:11 PM)

Got me. I don't believe they will. They believe Wade Phillips will transform the defense and be the difference.

Mike (Jacksonville)

Isn't the lack of a succession plan the biggest problem for those who want the Jags to stay in Jacksonville? Weaver is committed to this town, but he is getting old and he's already said his family has no interest.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:12 PM)

It's not as easy as people make it sound. You can't line up someone to buy it later, and it's not for sale now. And while he wants to ultimately sell to someone who will want to keep the Jags in Jax, where's the guarantee that such a buyer will exist?

JBR (Nash)

Paul, I was listening to you this morning and i heard you wrote a piece on griffin being moved to Strong Safety last year...Where is this article?????

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:14 PM)

It was about more than that. Like all my articles, it was on the blog. Michael Griffin hopeful after Titans' changes

Coach Metzalaars (Indy)

Here is my projected starting O-line LT-Castonzo LG Charlie Johnsons C-Saturday RG-DeVan RT- Ijalana. I reserve the right to flip the tackles. What do you think?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:14 PM)

I like it. I'd let RG be the most competitive camp spot.

Awayne (Indy)

More important for Colts to re-sign J.Addai or M.Bullitt?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:15 PM)

Tough call. Certainly they have more depth at running back. I expect Addai to be back for sure, though.

Awayne (Indy)

Do NFL owners really want a team in LA? It is their biggest bargaining chip for stadium negotiations.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:15 PM)

The one who moves there and makes a fortune from it certainly wants it. And they'll all profit from it.

Eli (My Cube)

don't you think a good succession plan would be if Tony Boselli put a small group together and bought the team? Do you think this is a dream scenario or could happen?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:16 PM)

It's ridiculous to presume that Boselli can afford an NFL franchise. Is it now his job to do all the things the franchise needs to survive?

Dustin (Stanford CA)

Hey Paul, can you explain a little bit of Gray's plan to play Ayers on the line and the 4-3 "over" alignment and how that will be different from Washburn's wide 9-technique (I think it was 9 tech)? Thanks!

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:17 PM)

Ends just outside or over the tackles. Ayers up at the line standing up outside the end -- rushing, jamming a TE and runnning with him or picking up a back from right on top of him instead of out of more space.

Kurtis (Houston, TX) [via mobile]

are the texans looking at taking any recievers once free agency opens? who would be a good complement to andre?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:18 PM)

They invested a good deal in Walter. I am not so sure they think they need an upgrade. They could need a third wit5h Jacoby Jones a free agent. I'd be cool with them chasing Burress. But I think he'll wind up in St. Louis.

Brad Willis (Nashville)

Paulie, you've been great with the extended hours on the Zone this week. What will it take for me to get you in the 10-12 slot? Name your price.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:18 PM)

Call me.

Brian (Minnesota)

I saw my favorite player Cortland Finnegan on the list of most overrated AFC South players the other day. I know that wasn't your list, but why do you agree with it????

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:19 PM)

He's not been as good as the reputation he built with the All Pro, Pro Bowl season. Has had trouble handling success. There are some encouraging signs now, but he's up and down so we'll have to wait and see.

joe addai (Louisiana )

Only 27 and I'm the most versatile back the colts have. I'm getting resigned...

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:20 PM)

I also think you are far more valuable to the Colts than you would be to anyone else.

JD (Houston)

What positions do you see the Texans going after as far as undrafted free agents go?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:20 PM)

It's not so much about positions as available talent.

Jeff (Nash)

Paul, I know you been critical of Finnegan as overrated but how much can you equate last years problems to his move to the opposite side?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:21 PM)

A top-flight corner should be able to make that move and not have his fans lean on it as an excuse when he's not as good.

Awayne (Indy)

Can Texans implement a new Def. in a 3-4 week training camp?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:21 PM)

They say they can, yes.

Austin (Kentucky)

How quickly do you expect Locker to start for the Titans, assuming the season starts on time with a normal training camp schedule

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:22 PM)

My gut-feeling prediction is he'd start the seventh game.

Adam Jones (Making It Rain) [via mobile]

Do you miss me? How about we go out for some fun? Cool?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:22 PM)

Pass.

Joe (Jacksonville, FL)

How did we manage to get 3 prime time games this season including 2 Monday Nighters after last year's debacle?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:23 PM)

A gift from the league to help you sell tickets.

JD (Houston)

If the Texans can beat the colts both games this year will they win the division?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:23 PM)

Won't happen so it won't happen.

Adam (Cookeville, TN)

Could Kenny Britt be cut outright? Do you think he's likely to see a league suspension? The Titans are rebuilding, why not lose the character distraction this season?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:24 PM)

Because what they are rebuilding around is Johnson and Britt. Be dumb to cut him. I think they will suspend him before the league has a chance, to make a statement about what Munch will tolerate going forward.

steve (indy)

with the jags and titans "stretching" for new QBs in the draft, while still needing some building blocks, would you think that they could be playing a waiting game; give the QBs 4-5 years and 4-5 drafts of talent to hopefully be the top of a manning-less AFC south?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:25 PM)

Four to five years? Certainly the have long range plans. But they aren't that patient. They expect to contend now, and for those QBs to really be in the flow by 2012.

Panda (Chicago)

Yankees at Wrigley excited?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:26 PM)

Excited about three easy games. Will be cool, yes.

TwoToneBlueBlood (Murfreesboro)

Does the league or Titans even have the authority to cut Kenny since he's technically not presently an employee of theirs?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:26 PM)

No, we were talking once things are up and running again. No moves can be made now.

Dan (Yakima, WA)

PK, thoughts on CJ after getting a new CBA. Does he publicly complain about his contract or go about his business quietly for a while. Should the Titan's show him love with a contract sooner than later?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:28 PM)

If he holds out once things are settled, they'd be in big trouble and he'd have a lot of leverage. He's their central building block. So it could get quite complicated.

Luke (Nebraska)

How many more years to you see Freeney and Mathis being the starting bookends together?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:29 PM)

Three?

Awayne (Indy)

Is Jim Irsay eligble for Twindex rating?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:32 PM)

Eligible yes. But I am far less fascinated by song lyrics than a lot of his followers, apparently.

Dustin (Stanford CA)

Hey Paul, How has D Morgan looked? What do you think his ceiling is this season after losing last year to injury?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:32 PM)

Looked good to me in the minimal stuff they were doing. I think he will be good.

Nate (Indy)

Is Jim Caldwell on any sort of hot seat? I think if the Colts don't make it to the AFC championship, I think Bill Polian needs to take a hard look at the coaching talent available, and I don't think it's unreasonable to set the expectations that high for this team.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:33 PM)

I don't think high expectations are reasonable. I think Chris, not Bill, would be the guy to push for change. But I don't see it happening.

Mike (Terre Haute)

If we end up with a shortened season, do you think it helps or hurts the Colts chances to end up playing a home game for the Super Bowl?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:35 PM)

Who benefits from losing first four?

TwoToneBlueBlood (Murfreesboro)

I meant even after things get going again, could they suspend Kenny for something he did when he wasn't employeed by them during the lockout? That would be like someone getting in trouble for something they did during the time they were laid off, after they came back to work.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:36 PM)

It's the league's plan to be able to, but it'll have to be part of what's negotiated.

Dan (Raleigh)

What part about your job do you miss most during the lockout? The sweltering OTAs? That has to be it, right?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:36 PM)

OTAs give me trips to my three out-of-town teams and time with guys. That's what I am missing out on.

Clint Session (Pennsylvania)

Am I going to fall victim to the Colt's philosophy of replaceable LBs? I know I got hurt but I am still a better playmaker than Kavell or Pat and CMON you saw my arm get broken and I finished playing.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:37 PM)

I think they'd miss you. Depends, probably, on the market. Jacksonville could use you.

Luke (Nebraska)

What do you think the probability of having the entire 2011 season? 100%?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:38 PM)

Very high. Please read what we've covered so far. I won't be predicting team records or Super Bowls when I don't know who's on which team yet.

Dan (Yakima, WA)

Read ESPN ultimate franchise rankings. Your beloved yanks are 75th. Sup with that? Titans dropped to 98th which is reasonable. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:39 PM)

Are you reading them on paper? I haven't been able to find them online. Any rankings with Yanks 75th are highly questionable.

Michael (Houston)

Do you think that the Texans have a good chance of getting Nnamdi Asomugha once free agency opens up? If they do, they could have an elite defense with Mario, DeMeco, Cushing, and Nnamdi.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:40 PM)

Ryans is coming off a major injury. Cushing is coming off a disappointing season, And I don't expect them to spend what Nnamdi will cost. You're being pretty optimistic. How are you letting them con you again?

Chocolate Fountain (EverBank Stadium)

I miss you so much. Would it be ok if I flew up to spend the weekend?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:40 PM)

I've kind of turned my back on you and your kind.

Brento (Chicago)

Any insight on the front office changes for the Colts? Is Dennis Polian qualified for the job or is it more nepitism than any of us want to admit?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:41 PM)

It's an administrative job. I suspect he can administrate. He won't be picking players.

Jim (Nashville)

What is it about Dirk Koetter that you think so highly of him? What exactly has he done with that offense? Outside of Jones-Drew and maybe Marcedes Lewis, no real weapons have been developed, and Garrard is decent at best. Just curious.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:41 PM)

Garrard is holding him back, not vice versa.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

I know it wasn't your column but I'm curious what your take is on Garrard being "overrated". Isn't he seen as a mid-level QB by most and if so isn't Prisco simply saying DG is in the lower tier? That he included DG's paycheck makes me think his opinion is related more to that.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:42 PM)

There is a strong contingent that thinks the Jaguars can win with him. I'm not part of that, so I too find him overrated. Also, who's the alternative in the category?

Del (Louisville)

Who do you think takes the CWS?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:43 PM)

Rooting hard for Vanderbilt, and the Commodores are stacked.

Brento (Chicago)

What do you think is the Colts front office take on the no name safeties on the roster? (ie. Chip Vaughn, Al Afalava, Mike Newton, David Caldwell). Is there a player here fans are discounting?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:44 PM)

I have no special insight, but don't know that they see an answer in that group.

Brento (Chicago)

I'm balding too - at what point do I need to bite the bullet and shave it all off? Where's the point of no return?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:44 PM)

Too soon is better than too late. It works for Bruce Willis and for me. Don't fret.

Finley (Couch)

Can we go to Boston for the parade?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:45 PM)

Only if all the people who live in Boston leave first.

andrew (indy)

what is the biggest need remaining for each afcs team?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:46 PM)

Jaguars, Texans and Colts: safety. Titans: veteran QB.

andrew (indy)

what do you have against bostonians?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:47 PM)

I'm a New York guy.

Will (Buffalo)

Do you think that the Texans could replace Kubiak with Phillips as the head coach if the team doesn't do well this season? I know Phillips had a horrible last season with Dallas, but he is a capable playoff head coach.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:48 PM)

Great plan. Let's replace a non-fiery guy with a less fiery one. That will really stir the guys up!

andrew (indy)

will garrard start all year or will gabbert step in after the bye?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:48 PM)

Depends on how the team is doing and how Gabbert is coming along.

Pete (bored at work)

Will the Titans build their offence around Locker's strengths, or will they install their offence and accept the growing pains?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:49 PM)

At the beginning when he's out there, A.

Adam (Louisville, KY)

Any thoughts on the possible MLB realignment?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:50 PM)

It's stupid -- would require an NL-AL game to be going on all the time. I don't see what's broken in baseball aside from guys stepping out of the box so much and pitchers taking so long to deliver.

Nate (Indy)

So you're saying that Bill Polian will stick with his guy no matter what? He got rid of Jim Mora and got Tony Dungy. He got rid of Kay Stevenson and got Marv Levy. So he's not above and beyond a coaching change. My sense is that Caldwell is Dungy's guy, not necessarily Polian's guy. Your sense?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:51 PM)

My sense is Polian didn't defer to Dungy when lining up a new coach. He had to be on board. Making a change is admitting he was wrong. Polian doesn't do too much of that these days, does he?

TwoToneBlueBlood (Murfreesboro)

What are the Titans going to do with only 2 TE's on the roster?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:52 PM)

Sign a third one.

Justin Bieber (Playing with toys [via mobile]

Are you a fan? I can always use newer money. To buy more toys of course. (Looks out window to see if 25 year old woman is at house yet)

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:53 PM)

If by "a fan" you mean "have no interest whatsoever," then by all means yes.

andrew (indy)

how does delone carter fit into the colts offense? as i understand it he doesn't block or catch very well, will he be a short-yardage specialist?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:53 PM)

I believe that's the plan. He could have a high touch-to-touchdown ratio.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

When asked about Eugene Monroe being listed as a top 10 OT you stated "he should be". Was that in reference to how you see him talent wise or how he needs to perform based on where he was drafted?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:53 PM)

B

Peyton (In)

My neck is healing fine Paul, why no call?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:54 PM)

No number = no call. Did you get my card?

Angelo (Cleveland)

Do you think Colt MCcoy is a legit starting QB

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:54 PM)

Not sold yet.

AllenOU (houston)

The Redskins pulled a fan out of the stands to practice with them? How awesome is that

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:55 PM)

Sounds pretty cool. If a player or that fan had gotten hurt, however, big troubles...

Peyton (the dark)

When was I supposed to get your card? We haven't been communicating well recently and I feel left in the dark.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:55 PM)

When you went to the mailbox.

Ron (Nashville)

It was discouraging to hear Tony Brown not fully participating in player workouts. Could it be an insurance issue, or is he still pretty tender?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:56 PM)

I think if the Titans are counting on Tony Brown they are foolish.

trevor (indy)

is it true that tom moore is gone from indy for good and might even be talking with the jets?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:57 PM)

Thanks for reading the blog! Moore's contract expired and the Colts didn't give him a new one. The Jets are trying to get him to do some light consulting work.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

NFL Network Top 100 Players of 2011: who is number one? CJ? Also, any thoughts on the list so far? I can't believe Jennings wasn't ranked higher.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:58 PM)

Paying no attention. As soon as McNabb was in it, it was a joke. Brady No. 1 without question.

ted (hermitage )

Will David Thorton be back with the Titans?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:58 PM)

No. He's done.

andy (daytona)

Ok, about the question about why hasn't dirk koetter developed an explosive offsense... coordinators don't develop players. Players play, coaches coach.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:59 PM)

I get your point. But offensive coordinators do develop quarterbacks. Koetter will have a big hand in Gabbert's development.

Ron (Nashville)

What's the likely-hood of Tulloch re-signing

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:00 PM)

For the kind of money he thinks he's worth, I'd say close to zero. I think he's very replaceable. You can find a cheap guy who can go a whole season without forcing or recovering a fumble.

Jason (Bmore)

How do the Jags feel about Jennings? Will he be in line to get more carries this year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:01 PM)

For him to get more carries, MJD would have to get less. Why would anyone want MJD to not get the ball?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:02 PM)

OK folks, that was good stuff. Thanks much for your participation.
