Great to be here. Nice distraction to stop thinking about Game 7 for an hour or so. Go B's. Let's vent.
What do you make of Carwin being unable to take down Dos Santos?
Dos Santos has always possessed strong takedown defense in the UFC. I can't recall him being taken down at any point in his UFC career. I would also say that Carwin is a bit overrated. Just seems to be a limited fighter at this stage of his career.
Any chance I will ever get to see a live UFC event lol?
I hope so. Great city, Baltimore is.
Strikeforce or UFC heavyweights? which is better at this point? I lean Strikeforce, your thoughts?
The 2 best heavyweights in the world are in the UFC. But perhaps Strikeforce has the better depth in the top 6-8. It's close, but I probably lean in your direction as well.
Chost, your best moment from 131?
I really enjoyed Donald Cerrone's performance. I know he was critical of himself after the fight, but I thought he was plenty aggressive and was in pursuit of the finish. He beat the tar out of Vagner Rocha in that 3rd round. Surprised he didn't break his leg. Also really enjoyed the Maia-Munoz scrap and, of course, Kenny Florian's strong performance over the final 10 minutes to win his featherweight debut.
who do you think has the best chance to win the Marquardt vs. Story fight?
Hard to know what we will get out of Marquardt in what will be his welterweight debut. Also tough to forecast how Rick Story will respond to such a quick turnaround. Marquardt is more skilled and more experienced, but Story is one hungry dude right now. The lean is towards Nate the Great, but I'm reluctant to pick against Story.
Jon, can you comment on how you felt the judges scoring went?
As always after a major MMA show, there is talk of the judges' scores. Once again, there were some scorecards that make you scratch your head, particularly in the Omigawa fight and Maia-Munoz. It's an incovenient truth in MMA and, quite frankly, I'm tired of talking about it. I feel for the fighters on the wrong end...
There were rumors of UFC coming to Chicago in August. Now that seems to be done. When are we going to get another UFC card?
Not sure. But go watch Strikeforce on July 30th. Next best thing.
over/under: 4:45 for Chost in the NYC Marathon
If I ever run a marathon, it'll be in Boston. And it'll be over 5 hours.
Its really amazing that Carwin was able to finish that fight without being able to see. Who do you think is a logical opponent for him next? Winner of Barry-Kongo?
Most people want to see him face Roy Nelson, b/c that fight nearly happened before and there is a legitimate dislike between the two.
Do you think the superfight between GSP and Silva will eventually happen?
Starting to have major doubts about that. I'd say there is a 25% chance it happens.
Go B's original six deserve the cup every year
Appreciate the love from PA. Go B's. Maybe I should bet on the Canucks. That might guarantee a Bruins victory. High anxiety tonite in Vancouver. So thankful to have witnessed Game 6 in person.
Any rumors on who/when Frank Mir's next fight will be?
Chost, you are very much against the 5 rounds for main events, correct?
Correct. I understand the reasoning behind the UFC's decision to make all main events 5 rounds beginning in August. They want to lessen the frequency of draws and decisions. But certain fights that are Fight Night main events simply have no business being 5-rounders. Neither Dan Hardy nor Chris Lytle are top 10 welterweights. No reason for them to be fighting in championship rounds.
LETS GO BRUINS!!!!!!!! What is your prediction for tonight?!?!?!?!
Bruins 3, Canucks 2.
Hi Jon, have your heard more news about a possible change of division for Fedor to light hevyweight? i feel his chances for another run to the top are lying there.
Doubtful that Fedor would work his way down to 205 lbs. at this stage of his career. I love the catch weight fight against Dan Henderson, but I think that is probably as low as Emelianenko will go.
How do you see the Strikeforce event ending up this weekend?
Love Overeem and Barnett.
Just a heads up the auto update is not working.
Who do you have winning between Werdum and Overeem this weekend and in what fashion?
Overeem by spectacular knockout.
Shawn Thornton vs the Sedin Twins...who ya got?
Love the question. #22 all day.
Upcoming fight you're most looking forward to? For me its Wand-Leben. Could be the fight of forever.
Overeem-Werdum has been my answer to this question for some time. Beyond that, I think the grudge match/rematch between Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber will be epic. Love the genuine dislike there.
How about my Mavs!!!
All hail Dirk and the Mavs. So amped for Nowitzki, Cuban, and all of the first-time NBA champions. Get some, D-Wade. Too cocky for my liking.
Hey Jon, with the Strikeforce WW title now vacant, who will fight for the strap??
I don't think it's a huge priority to crown a new champion. You tell me.
Is there any way we can get your twin brother involved in these live chats? It'd be like Superman and Bizarro teaming up.
First he's gotta order more than 2 PPVs/year. At least he now knows what MMA stands for. Honored you've graced the chat.
Chooooost!!! What % chance do you give your bf vs Aldo?
Was nice to see Kenny at the Bruins game but I still want to talk to him more about the weight cut, how he felt on fight night, etc. The consensus is that the 2nd cut down to 145 will be easier. I'm not so sure. Florian will be back on MMA Live this week. Right now, perhaps I'd give him a 40% chance to beat Aldo.
Even better...Anik twins vs the Sedins!
Now that I can do.
Jonny, what's K-Flo walking around at right now?
He was north of 160 3 hours after weighing in. I'd imagine he's close to 170 at this point. Can't wait to see him attack the ESPN cafeteria on Friday. He looks uncoordinated eating pizza.
I'm puking all over my living room. What should I do?
Hahahahahahaha. Those Luongo chants at the Gahden Monday night were wonderful.
Was Pettis overrated or is Guida that good?
I think we overrated Pettis a tad. Not that he can't evolve and become one of the top 5 lightweights in the world, or even a UFC champion. But his takedown defense needs to improve and become more consistent.
JA, did you ever ask Dana for me if he will bring the UFC to Miami? Perfect place for a fan expo, and a very diverse city.
Not yet. Will make sure to the next time I see him.
I know you're tired of talking about the judging, as am I, but do you foresee a real solution anytime in the near future?
Not really. I'd like to see 5 judges, which would lessen the margin for error.
Benavidez will be the first UFC flyweight champ?
I don't see anyone beating him if he drops down to 125. He's the No. 2 135er in the world.
As far as Strikeforce WW championship fight goes, people are saying Tyrone Woodley vs. the Noons-Masvidal winner. You like?
Not a ton. Woodley is obviously the first name that comes to mind. Jorge Masvidal finally seems to have grasped what it takes to effectively cut down to 155. Both Gamebred and Noons belong at 155, in my estimation. And Gilbert Melendez needs a challenger. So I'd prefer to see the winner there fight Gil, unless of course Melendez was transitioned to the UFC.
I think Mighty Mouse would give Benavidez a fight at 125
should Cain be worried???......
Most people thought JDS was the heavyweight best-equipped to give Velasquez a run for the belt before this past weekend. Dos Santos looked great again, but I'm not sure Cain is any more concerned than he was before JDS fought Carwin. I still like Velasquez in the fight. He's roughly even money right now...opened as a slight underdog, despite being the champion.
Why are the Brazilian fighters so hard to like?
Disagree with that statement. Sure, many of them are harder to get to know if you don't speak their native tongue. But Dos Santos is a very dynamic guy and very likable.
Stann vs Munoz, who would win?
I tried to get the fight going on Twitter (you can follow me @Jon_Anik) and I do believe it will happen. Early lean towards B. Stann.
Do you see Zuffa buying Bellator in the near future?
What's next at Middlewt if Silva beats Okami?
Anderson Silva could face the Bisping-Miller winner. Or the Stann-Munoz winner, provided the UFC puts that fight together.
After he KO's Big Nog will Brendan Schaub be the #1 Contender?
Not in my eyes. Wins over declining legends like Cro Cop and Big Nog don't get you title shots, traditionally.
who's bonnar's next opponent?
Karlos Vemola, August 14th in Milwaukee.
Do you think Faber will be able to catch Cruz and work up against the cage, or is Cruz too slippery?
I've had a hard time forecasting this one. I love Faber and am really hoping for a great performance out of him, which we didn't necessarily see against Eddie Wineland. I just think Cruz is too good to lose right now.
IF there is one, which UFC division do you see as the one with the least depth to it currently?
If Cain isn't ready for UFC 134 in Houston to face JDS, do you think they will slate Aldo vs Florian as the main event?
Do you see any other SF guys leaving their belts to take UFC fights like Diaz? Gil seemed open to it on MMA Live...
Melendez definitely would be down. He was very clear on MMA Live- he wants the UFC belt because it would give him the recognition he deserves as the No. 1 lightweight in the world. I do believe the Diaz situation was unique, though. He had some leverage, he wanted to box, and GSP needed a fresh opponent. Time will tell, but eventually Strikeforce will be folded.
Thoughts on Stout KO?
Brilliant. Yves Edwards had a phenomenal camp, too. They were very confident coming in. But one shot can end a fight anytime in MMA. Also props to Stout for his restraint at the end of the fight. I guess that goes without saying.
Who's the first one to fight next, Lesnar or Sonnen?
Sonnen. I have my doubts as to whether or not Brock Lesnar will ever fight again.
why is it that (outside of cruz and faber) we don't see any wec guys higher on cards?
I think it's circumstantial. Ben Henderson got some main-card love against Mark Bocek. Cerrone was just featured on the PPV this past weekend. Merger only happened recently. I don't think there is any specific motivation to not showcase those guys.
Who leads in KO of the year right now? Seems like every PPV KO of the Night has been BRUTAL.
For me, it is definitely Anderson Silva against Vitor Belfort.
What's next for Donald Cerrone and Dave Herman? I think they're two of the most exciting fighters in the UFC right now
I'd like to see Cerrone fight someone like Evan Dunham. I'd really like to see him fight Melvin Guillard or Clay Guida, because I think he could beat both of those guys and instantly emerge as a contender. But right now, they are teammates. Cerrone's UFC future is bright. As for Dave Herman, why not Joey Beltran?
MMA Live is my 1st stop for the latest news going in to the weekend. Keep up the good work. Gil Melendez is a great addition to the team. Do you think he could take the winner of Maynard/Edgar? I believe so
Thanks, Mike Scott. I definitely believe Melendez matches up favorably against both Edgar and Maynard, with Maynard being a slightly more difficult fight. I get killed for having Melendez as the #4 lightweight in the world. Can't wait for Edgar-Maynard title rematch so I can move Gil up.
what do you think BJ's future holds?
I think there are a ton of big fights for B.J. Penn at 170 lbs. The unanswerable questions are a) how much longer he wants to do this and b) which of those fights appeal to him. Future opponents I'd like to see are Shields, Koscheck, Alves, Condit...list goes on and on.
Who needs the win more: Tito or Bader? and why?
Bader can't lose. Tito doesn't have any pressure on him. Ortiz might be one loss away from being cut, but Bader is right in his prime and, if he ever wants to get into the title picture, he can't lose to a dude who has lost 4 or 5 in a row.
Kenny or Mendes #1 contender?
I don't believe the UFC can go wrong here. Right now, I think the undefeated Mendes has more fights at 145 and thereby a stronger case for a title shot. But Mendes is young and wants to fight, so he accepted an August matchup with Rani Yahya. Florian and Aldo both are without a next opponent, so it could be put together fairly quickly. We shall see.
As Kenny's friend, I really hope he doesn't have to make that cut more than 2-3 more times. Don't think it's good for him long-term to be putting his body through that.
If you could play matchmaker for a day which fight in all of mma would you put together?
I'd like to see Eddie Alvarez against Gilbert Melendez. Or maybe Hector Lombard vs. Anderson Silva. Let's see what Lombard has. But the #1 dream scenario for me has to be Jon Jones v. Anderson Silva.
Sobering stat for Bruins courtesy of USA Today. Home teams are 19-1 in pro sports game 7's the past 32 years. (Penguins )
Am i the only one that would rather see BJ back at LW? If Edgar ever loses I think BJ could get the belt back.
You're likely not the only one. But look at all the names I just rattled off as possible opponents at 170. I didn't even mention Jake Ellenberger, Rick Story or Rumble Johnson. In my estimation, there are many, many more exciting fights for Penn at welterweight.
Smart move for Story to take the fight against Marquardt?
If he loses, not so much. If he wins, great decision. I think it's honorable that he was so willing to take such a tough fight on such short notice. Good news is he's a friggin' warrior and, even if he has a setback, he's not going anywhere. War Rick Story.
I should be working, but instead I'm reading your chat. Give me a shout out Anik.....please!
Serious question... Why should I buy a Mac instead of a PC?
I don't have enough time to list all the reasons. I was a PC guy my whole life. Bought an iMac 2 years ago and haven't looked back. Just do it.
How do you like the idea of bj vs nick diaz?
No problem with that fight, either. I still would list many other matchups ahead of that one, but the fight intrigues me nonetheless.
Does Diaz pose any legit threat to GSP's crown? I know Diaz would stand and fire but I don't think GSP will play with fire. And I don't think Diaz can stop the shot..
Not in my opinion, no. I believe GSP will take him down with ease and finish him via ground-and-pound. If Diaz is gonna win, he'll have to get a lot accomplished while on his back. He's more capable than most in that area, but St. Pierre is not Evangelista Santos.
Canucks 3, Bruins 0.
Dude you better get back to the check-cashing window. South Florida's finest need their money orders.
nothing like having lunch and enjoying wednesday Anik chat.....
Thanks. I don't have much of an appetite. Can't stop thinking about this Game 7 and the possibility of yet another championship parade through the city of Boston.
What summer movie you looking forward to watch?
Warrior on September 9th.
Tell jason (hollywood, fl) I'm committed to giving up at least 2 goals tonight.
Chris Weidman future contender?
I like Wiedman, but I worry about all of the knee surgeries. He's had some hype behind him for some time now. Certainly didn't do anything to diminish his status with the standing guillotine over the weekend.
Early pick for the Bellator Summer Series?
I think Friere beats Joe Warren this time around.
Would u rather see the Bruins win it tonight or Bones Jones vs. Silva?
Bruins win it tonite. That was an easy one. The NHL's Eastern Conference is so young and talented. I worry, if the B's don't win it this year, I may never see them hoist the Cup.
Made it! JA, can you explain to me why MMA hasn't been licensed in the greatest city in the world?
It's actually simple. There are powerful people who either don't like MMA or don't see MMA legislation as a major priority. It'll get done eventually.
MMA is licensed in Boston Mike, but thanks for your concern.
That's what I'm sayin', Trick!
JA, over/under. Cain will defend his title 2.5 times
Really hard to predict any heavyweight to make 3 straight successful title defenses in the UFC. But I'm in a good mood and I love cardio Cain, so I'll go over.
Chost I am starting a new job next week, so this may be my last chat :(
Sorry to hear that. I always post the transcripts on Twitter, so feel free to follow me at Twitter.com/@Jon_Anik. My boss continues to haze me about my lack of Twitter followers.
Will Royce fight on the Brazil card?
Over, if he gets through JDS who else is there?
Some of the Strikeforce heavyweights will be in the mix eventually. Could happen sooner than we think, too.
If Fedor loses to Hendo, will he retire for real?
I think so. Some reports suggest he had to be convinced to fight on after the loss to Big Foot. There seems to have been some reluctance to continue his career at that point, so another loss could very well spell the end.
Overreem- SF fighters are fair game- see Diaz
Every situation is unique, though.
Better chance of winning, Cain vs. Overeem or Frankie vs. Gil?
Tough question. Both are close fights on paper. Ask me again next week after we see Overeem against Werdum. Cool?
Fedor-Hendo, Daley-Cyborg, Roger-King Mo all on one card. Kudos to Strikeforce. Gracie or Mo?
One thing you can always say about Strikeforce- their main cards are loaded. Part of that is because they don't have nearly as many shows as the UFC, but they are always drunk with talent. I like King Mo.
Do you ever see Edgar movin down to 145?
Yes. He could probably make 135.
Reem won't fight in the UFC until he swears off K1 for good
When Overeem was here at ESPN earlier this year, he seemed willing to do just that to focus on MMA.
You think we'll see King Mo vs. Rampage at some point? I wanna see that fight....
The UFC's biggest problem is champs being out for long periods due to injuries. Won't 5 round main events increase the injury problems for contenders?
Theoretically, yes. It's a fair point.
When will Matt Hughes retire?
Wouldn't be at all surprised to see him retire in the Octagon following the Diego Sanchez fight.
I lose at least one hour of work time every Wednesday. You're the man JA!
Much obliged. Last call, ladies. Gotta prep for an NBA Draft hit.
I meant whose your pick to win the Bellator tourney?
Marlon Sandro. Or maybe Pat Curran, whom I like much more at 145 than 155.
How is the pregnancy coming along...any strange cravings for her?
Gettin' close my man. August 2nd is the due date.
I understand JDS' solid showing, but why has no one delved in to Carwin's extremely poor performance? No way was that the same Carwin from before.
Yeah, I thought Carwin looked beat. Perhaps I overrated him in the past. Just looked plodding and kinda sloppy.
My first chat in a couple weeks. Good to be back and good luck tonight!
Appreciate it, Andrew. Nothing quite like having one of your teams in a winner-take-all championship game.
What's a Bellator??
Who goes first in the NBA draft?
You need to start a podcast or get on ESPN Radio. It's too hard to read and drive, but I do love your chats!
Been trying to get one going for a long time. Hopefully it'll happen soon. I do contribute with an 'Anik Dotes' segment every week on our ESPN UFC UK podcast, but I don't get much time...
What are your thoughts on Jeter?
I like that he's hurt and isn't much more than a singles hitter right now. One of the all-time greats and most of us Red Sox fans respect him a great deal. But I will always root for him to suck. And he's been wretched this year.
Glad to see they flyweight division is coming and would love to see a tourney to crown a champ. #Mighty Mouse as first champ.
I'm not as geeked as you are, b/c I believe 7 divisions are enough. But for Demtrious Johnson, it's welcome news for sure.
Jon what's the best fight you've seen in person. Go Bruins
Floyd Mayweather knocking out Ricky Hatton and Dan Henderson forearming Michael Bisping's chin will always stand out to me. I'd have to go through my credentials to think about it...
If Carwin was overrated, was Brock as well?
Jon best fight and fighter you've seen in person. Go Bruins.
Best individual fighter I've seen in person is definitely Anderson Silva. The man makes it look so easy. The UFC will never have another champion quite as dominant. Jon Jones is the only guy with a real shot.
Jon! Do you think situations like Carwin and Koscheck (where fighters probably shouldn't have been allowed to fight on) could come back to bite the UFC? Thanks!
Good question. I'd always like to see them err on the side of caution. After the 1st round of Carwin-Dos Santos, we essentially knew the outcome. Praise Carwin for his toughness, but he did next to nothing offensively from that point forward. The outcome was an eventuality.
With Jones vs Jackson now official. Does Rampage stand a chance?
Every UFC fighter has a chance. But I don't like Rampage at all in that fight.
Way to go out on a limb with that answer Chost :)
Questions like that aren't great for a chat. Need time to think, hoss.
Do u thunk Tito Ortiz and Pat Miletich deserve to be in the UFC HOF? I do
Yes. Ortiz should be a lock and Pat's contributions speak for themselves.
Michael Bisping gets past Mayhem, Do you think he deserves a shot at the Title ?
Yes. That'll be his 15th UFC fight. That loss to Wanderlei Silva really set him back.
Gotta bounce. Thanks for your time as always. Overflow questions will be answered later today on Twitter- you can find me @Jon_Anik. See you Friday night at 9PM PT/midnight ET for MMA Live. K-Flo back in the hot seat. Enjoy Game 7. C'mon B's. Please. -JA
