Chat with Tim MacMahon

Tim MacMahon
  (4:10 PM)

Thanks for joining. Sorry I'm late. Wish I had a good excuse, but I just forgot. Blame post-Finals fatigue.

Ted (Addison)

Do you think the Mavs could find a trade partner to trade Heywood in the off season?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:11 PM)

I don't think the Mavs will look for one. Why would they? Brendan Haywood is a starting-caliber backup center who played a key role in their playoff run. Plus, they need insurance in case they can't keep Tyson Chandler.

Mark (Germany)

Dirk is playing for his nation this summer?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:13 PM)

He hasn't said anything definitively, but I doubt it. He needs rest after that championship run.

jose (ft. worth)

does jj barea want to leave dallas? i hear rumors flying, but i'd really like to keep him here. seems that roddy b doesn't have quite the penetration skills barea has.

Tim MacMahon
  (4:13 PM)

Barea made it very clear that his first choice would be to stay in Dallas. He loves the city, the team and his role. It sounds like it would take an offer that blows him away financially for him to leave.

Rodrigo (Denton)

Why on earth is Cuban saying no rings? I feel that the Mavs will get them eventually, but why isn't Cuban saying "rings plus something else"? I hate those crazy billionaire flashes of brilliance, because sometimes they are crazy.

Tim MacMahon
  (4:14 PM)

Cuban hadn't said anything for so long. He had to say something crazy when he finally broke his self-imposed silence.

Patrick (PA)

i asked this to caplan yesterday. when did you think "dallas could actually win the title this year". my moment came when dirk hit an and-one at the end of game 2 in LA. i knew that being up 2-0 the series was over (i know, i know, overconfidence), and i knew with the spurs out dallas would be IN the finals. what was your moment

Tim MacMahon
  (4:15 PM)

I agree with you. I didn't believe this team was a legitimate contender until they went up 2-0 over LA.

Should Cuban make a push for a superstar and think about the future? Terry and Marion's value are very high right now.

Tim MacMahon
  (4:16 PM)

My personal opinion is that the Mavs could keep this team as intact as possible and try to make another run next season. This team, which has off-the-charts chemistry, deserves a chance to defend its crown.

John (Garland)

So i heard DeShawn Stevenson was 'imbibing' too much and got arrested wandering around the metroplex. is he out? is he okay? will the nba do anything? (i'm not excusing it, but i don't think he was even near a car, so can't the league just say 'you were celebrating')

Tim MacMahon
  (4:17 PM)

Stevenson was arrested for public intoxication and posted bail this morning. I doubt the league takes action because of a misdemeanor. It might be different if he was behind the wheel or violent.

Jhonny (Irving, /tx)

Hi Tim, with this incident happened to Stevenson did he just sign his 'death-warrant' of not coming back to Mavs roster next season?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:19 PM)

Don't think so. Pretty sure the vast majority of the Mavs were publicly intoxicated at some point since Sunday night. Not sure if Stevenson will be back -- and I think he'll have to take the minimum to stay -- but getting drunk two days after winning the title won't change how the team thinks about him.

brett (lamar)

someone pointed out that, since the mavs went 2-9 without dirk, their record with their playoffs squad was really 55-16. so their 'adjusted' 82 game record without dirk getting hurt would be 64-18, clearly the best in the league. even with that 2-9 stretch, they still were within 4 games of the league's best record. what i mean is, why did everyone pick against dallas this playoffs? the stats were there proving their dominance. why did people think dallas was so unexpected?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:20 PM)

They were actually 2-7 without Dirk, but I get your point. Why was Dallas' run so unexpected? They lost nine straight games to West playoff teams until finally beating the Hornets in the regular-season finale. They were blown out by 28 in LA late in the season. This wasn't a team that was peaking entering the playoffs. But they peaked at the perfect time.

jorge (dallas)

with the cba/lockout coming, give me a prediction of opening night for the '11-'12 season. i doubt we tip off until january 1st.

Tim MacMahon
  (4:21 PM)

No idea, but I think a lockout-shortened season would increase the Mavs' odds of repeating. More rest for the Mavs' many vets.

Armando (The Colony)

I'm having Mavericks withdrawl. What do I do until November???

Tim MacMahon
  (4:21 PM)

Well, the Rangers are in first place.

Assistant Coach Dwayne Casey (Dallas)

Will SOMEBODY hire me as a head coach already??

Tim MacMahon
  (4:22 PM)

Like the man's chances to land in Toronto. He deserves another chance to be a head coach.

dirkydirk (ft. bragg, north carolina)

Do you think the mavs make any kind of roster move to bolster the bench or do they stay put?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:24 PM)

I don't see major changes to the roster next season. If anything, the Mavs will be conservative and try to create cap room for next summer, when Chris Paul, Deron Williams and Dwight Howard can test the market.

Ricky (Houston)

Hey Tim. I know nothing can be done until a new CBA is reached but how likely is it we can resign all of our free agents (Butler, Chandler, Stevenson, Barea, and Cardinal)? I'd like to see them all back as I think they all played a huge role (minus butler who was hurt) in winning the championship.

Tim MacMahon
  (4:26 PM)

I don't think they'll all be back, but my educated guess is that most will. Money will play a large role, though. Will Stevenson and/or Stojakovic settle for the minimum? Will Butler accept a one-year deal and wait until next year to try to get another big contract?

Charles (Dallas)

Will Nick Calathes ever suit up for the Mavs and if so will he be productive?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:27 PM)

Calathes had a good year in Greece, but he'll probably stay overseas for another year. Mavs think they got first-round value in him but aren't in any hurry to bring him to Dallas.

Jesse D. (Laredo,Tx.)

First of all... thank you for reminding Wade about his comments on Dirk on how "Dirk couldn't finish games", and what he thought about how Dirk finished these games!! I was hoping you would!! With that said... Do you feel any kind of pressure asking these tough questions to superstars?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:29 PM)

Nope, just part of the job. As long as it's a legitimate question -- and that one definitely was -- there's no downside for me. I thought Wade handled the question well. If he didn't, that's on him, not my problem. It's actually more difficult to ask Dallas athletes tough questions, because I deal with them on a regular basis, but the Mavs typically handle them very well.

Craig G. (Fairfield, CA)

Hey Tim, how do you think a healthy Caron Butler would have impacted the Finals? Would the Mavs have had "too many" offensive options to be as successful as they were? Thanks!

Tim MacMahon
  (4:31 PM)

I wrote after Game 1 that the Finals could have been the series where Butler's absence finally cost the Mavs. That obviously didn't happen, but a healthy Butler would have made the Mavs even better. It would have given them another good defender to use against Wade and James, and he'd be at worst their No. 3 scoring option.

Henry (dallas)

You should tell mark that the mavs should get rings and watches because everyone knows the time is now

Tim MacMahon
  (4:31 PM)

Not a bad idea.

Jason (Mavs fan) (Chicago)

I know you always say you are a reporter and not a fan but admit it... your Grinch heart had to be growing just a little for these Mavs right?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:32 PM)

I'll share what I texted to Rick Carlisle early Monday morning: "Congratulations. You and your team have always been class acts. This title is richly deserved."

E (ID)

Besides Duncan, no superstar-led team has won a championship w/o and All NBA teammate until Dirk (at least post 1985). I know Dirk is getting his due, but some still question his all-time greatness. Why isn't this discussed more?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:33 PM)

You're forgetting about Hakeem Olajuwon ... and I'm not sure how you'd classify the Pistons title team from last decade. But I think Dirk is getting his due now as an all-time great. The debate isn't whether he's an NBA legend; it's where he ranks among the NBA legends.

Jayson (DFW)

With the draft not being too far away, who do you thing the Mavs are going to go after? Nikola Mirotic is projected to go around #26 and I really like his game.

Tim MacMahon
  (4:34 PM)

I will have to do a little draft cramming, probably early next week. I must admit that I have very little idea of who the Mavs might draft near the end of the first round.

Charles (Dallas)

What are your thoughts on D. Jones? Does he have what it takes to contribute to the Mavs future success?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:35 PM)

It's way too early to tell. This was basically a redshirt season for him. He needs to prove to the coaching staff that he has the work ethic it takes to succeed in the NBA, but he has intriguing potential as a big point guard.

Rody (Arlington,TX.)

Hey Tim, do you think that we will be able to repeat if we lose Tyson Chandlier to free agency?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:38 PM)

That would be a huge, huge blow. There's a reason Dirk always refers to Chandler as the Mavs' MVP this season. Chandler was a big piece that had been missing from the Mavs' championship puzzle. So, to answer your question, I don't think the Mavs are contenders without Chandler unless they pull off a miracle and trade for Dwight Howard.

Jordan James (Garland, Texas)

How many rings will Dirk have when he decides to retire?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:39 PM)

My crystal ball is a bit foggy, but I'll say he gets one more. I think he has three more superstar seasons left and can be a legit co-star for a few more years after that.

pedro (mexico)

I doubt Stevensons comes back, I think Brewer will fill his role. What do you think?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:39 PM)

That's why I think Stevenson would have to accept the minimum salary to stay. Selfishly, I hope he does. The man is a quote machine.

Stephen (Allen, TX)

What are your thoughts on Roddy B? Do you think he can become a impact starting point guard in this league, like the Roddy we saw his first year. Or do you think he'll be an average back up in this league, more like what we saw this year?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:41 PM)

I don't think Roddy B will ever be a point guard. I think his ceiling is to become a French-speaking version of Jason Terry. Problem is, Terry loves pressure and Roddy seems scared of it, at least right now.

Just out of curiousity... is there any footage of Dirk's moment to himself immediately after game 6. So awesome that he did that... I was just wondering if anyone got caught it.

Tim MacMahon
  (4:41 PM)

Not that I'm aware of. Dirk went straight to the showers because he didn't want his private moment to be caught on tape.

Brian Cardinal (Dallas)

Will I still be in Dallas this October? I really like it here and did help injure Dwyane Wade (that should have been a charge). Besides, Dallas does still need a Custodian, right?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:42 PM)

Dirk is a huge fan of The Custodian, and the German has a pretty strong say around these parts. Expect the Cardinal era to last at least another year here.

Matt (Haltom City)

besides locking up Chandler and Barea what should be the mavs number 1 priority going into free agency?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:44 PM)

I think Butler is the next priority, but I doubt the Mavs will offer a long-term deal. He'd be an upgrade over the postseason roster. ... Gotta go. Miami radio calling. thanks for joining me.
