Mavs with Jeff Caplan

Jeff Caplan
  (4:04 PM)

Sorry for the delay folks.

Jeff Caplan
  (4:04 PM)

I'm at the AAC where the 2010-11 NBA Champion Mavs just wrapped up their exit interviews. So, on to your questions.

Matt (Plano,TX)

What an amazing run for the Mavs! Finally after all these years- my question is looking at the offseason- who comes back Peja or the Custodian Brian Cardinal? Cardinal has defense and offense while Peja is only offense sometimes. I like Cardinal he has done a superb job.

Jeff Caplan
  (4:06 PM)

Matt, I wouldn't be too optimistic that Peja returns. While he had some nice games here, including big-time outings against Portland and the Lakers, he's showing his body to brittle and his game not as sharp on a consistent basis. I do think the Mavs would love to bring back Cardinal. He's a blue-collar guy who showed his value in the Finals. Dirk absolutely loves him and that carries a lot of weight around here.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Will the Dallas Mavericks have a Victory Parade? If so When?

Jeff Caplan
  (4:07 PM)

Thursday morning, downtown Dallas.

Timbo (germany)

any word on the mavs plans with nick calathes? he seems to have developed nicely in europe and would give them some young legs

Jeff Caplan
  (4:08 PM)

Nick Calathes is very happy in Greece. Don't expect him Dallas, but don't hold me to that either. Stranger things have happened.

Kendrick (Dallas)

I have been a die heart Mavs fan...I been throught it with this team and I have to say that it feels good wearing Champs gear to work. I no longer have to hear that they are a one man team...They are the best team in the NBA this year. My question is if they are able to sign their free agents Chandler Butler and J.J. what do you think Dallas will be messing next year to repeat?

Jeff Caplan
  (4:09 PM)

Well, if they won it all this year without Butler why would they be missing anything. In fact, if they re-sign Butler, which I think they can to a one-year deal, then you're adding him and Roddy will get a chance to get his game together. JJ is more interesting. He's going to have a lot of interest out there and he might have to decide on taking the money or staying in Dallas.

Brian (Tyler TX )

What additions can the Mavs make to give them the best shot at a repeat?

Jeff Caplan
  (4:11 PM)

It is so hard to talk about additions when we don't know what the salary cap is going to look like. They are going to have to pay for Tyson. JJ is going to cost come coin. Caron might come more cheaply after the injury. There might not be much money, as usual, to spend on free agency. Donnie Nelson said the plan is to bring the gang back. Probably won't happen, but Chandler, Caron and JJ are the priorities.

RickyMFFL (Houston)

Please tell me Cuban wasn't serious about not getting the guys rings. I know he wants to do something special for the guys but this should be in addition to rings!

Jeff Caplan
  (4:12 PM)

Who knows if he was serious or not but he said it, maybe because he feels like he always has to make people think that he's thinking out of the box. Well, everyone from Dirk to Kidd to Carlisle to Donnie Nelson said rings are what they want, and they will get rings.

jason (New London, Tx)

i think that deshawn stevenson is a very important part of this teams toughness. will they look to resign him?

Jeff Caplan
  (4:14 PM)

Jason, hard to say on Stevenson. Again, the Mavs won't have much money to play with and another team might have liked the defense and 3-point shooting he brought this season and then particular on the big stage of a Finals. So, it depends on other offers and then DeShawn wanting to either take more cash -- not that he's going to get big money or anything -- or stay here.

John (Providence, RI)

I hope you were able to enjoy the journey of the Mavericks' season. As a Celtics fan, I was only worried about one team going into the playoffs and that was Dallas. I did not understand why they were considered underdogs in virtually every series.

Jeff Caplan
  (4:15 PM)

John, they were considered underdogs because of their history the past five years. No one believed in this team.

Joe (OKC)

Hey Jeff...I know the Mavs need to hang on to Chandler. How about a trading Haywood for Nate Robinson, Ivey, and Mullens. Mahinmi can play backup C and Nate replaces Barea who likely leaves in free agency for more money. Thunder get another big as insurance for Perkins.

Jeff Caplan
  (4:17 PM)

Joe, trading Haywood is not out of the realm of possibility because of his salary and the need to perhaps tighten things up salary-wise. Not sure I like replacing Barea with Nate Robinson, but the point of shedding salary by trading Haywood is something that can't be dismissed. The length of his deal could potentially scare suitors off, but we know that teams will overpay for big men. Think Miami would have liked Haywood in the middle in the Finals?

Bryson (Dallas)

Now that the Mavericks are World Champs!!, it's time to get down to business. I know it all depends on the new CBA but what are your the draft and free agency for the Mavs. Will they let Deshawn Stevenson and Peja go and give those minutes to Dominic Jones and Brewer? Will the resign The Custodian? Your thoughts...

Jeff Caplan
  (4:18 PM)

Bryson, I'll address Dominique Jones by saying I just don't know if this kid is going to make it. He has to really improve his outside shot. On a deep, veteran team, he had no place to play. If things thin out, which they might if JJ leaves and Roddy doesn't pan out, then we'll see.

jeffrey (Kansas)

Do you think Dirk's playoff performance was one of the best in NBA history?

Jeff Caplan
  (4:20 PM)

It certainly has to be considered up there. He was sensational in every series. He averaged 27.7 points and 8.1 rebounds. He shot 48 percent from the floor,46 percent from 3 and 94 percent from the FT line. He led his team to a 16-5 record in the playoffs and outplayed Kobe, Durant, LeBron and Wade. Not a bad little run for your first ring.

Wilmer (Puerto Rico)

Hi, Jeff, unbelievable, here in PR everybody is happy for Dallas and JJ, he is going to get a big celebration, parade. Finally, next year we as fans can watch Dallas have a 10 win streak, and really enjoy it without everybody thinking, "yeah, but they will get bounce in the playoffs". My question is do u see a scenario where J Kidd (after reflection) shocks the mavs and announces his retirement? Thanks

Jeff Caplan
  (4:22 PM)

Wilmer, in one word: no.He reiterated again today that he has no plans to retire. Look, the guys feels good and showed that with keeping his minutes down and getting some time off he can still perform at a high level during a two-month playoff run. He'll be back. One other reason: He isn't leaving $8-plus million on the table.

Patrick (Pennsylvania)

when did you think "dallas could actually win the title this year". my moment came when dirk hit an and-one at the end of game 2 in LA. i knew that being up 2-0 the series was over (i know, i know, overconfidence), and i knew with the spurs out dallas would be IN the finals. what was your moment.

Jeff Caplan
  (4:23 PM)

Patrick,I'm with you, it had to be when they went up 2-0 on LA and you could tell that the Lakers were cooked. I felt the Mavs would beat either OKC or Memphis and then once you get to the Finals anything can happen and did.

enrique m. (ft. worth)

i heard a rumor barea wants to go to ny. or at least that ny knicks will throw $6 mil his way. say it ain't so, caplan! he's my 2nd fave player (after dirk). surely he likes being here "winning!"

Jeff Caplan
  (4:25 PM)

enrique...It has been brought up before, maybe two seasons ago where Barea made a flip comment about how it be cool to play in NY. Hard to see any team giving JJ $6 mil. JJ said today that he knows his options are wide open next season after his great playoff run, but he said he likes his role here and wants to stay here.

javier (dallas)

will rick carlisle ever win coach of the year? they should seriously wait until after the title to do that award.

Jeff Caplan
  (4:26 PM)

I don't think he really cares. If the award was voted on after the playoffs he probably would have won it.I thought he should have been in the top three this season.

jeff (garland)

what do i do now? actual work? i've wasted so much time on the mavs since april, i feel... empty. (just kidding - sort of?)

Jeff Caplan
  (4:26 PM)

keep reading espndallas.com

Armando (The Colony)

Can you settle a debate - in english, do you say Dirk's last name with a W or a V. (i know in german either way is fine). But when david stern said "WIZTKI" in the Finals trophy celebration, it sounded a bit off.

Jeff Caplan
  (4:27 PM)

people say it different ways. I pronounce it with a V sound.

tom (dallas)

who are the mavericks looking at the draft workouts and are they developing dominique jones in case jj barea leaves

Jeff Caplan
  (4:29 PM)

Sure they're developing Jones, but his development hasn't exactly been on the fast track. As for the draft, the Mavs are will select way way down, I think 26th maybe? I have yet to get into much draft analysis so I couldn't even give you a good idea especially with this draft being weak according to those who study such things.

Brent (Dallas)

What are the chances that the Mavs could get Dwight Howard?

Jeff Caplan
  (4:29 PM)

Slim.

Olivia (Fort Worth)

Any chane NBA can avoid lockout? Such a great Finals hate to see it get ruined like the NFL

Jeff Caplan
  (4:30 PM)

Olivia, there will almost certainly be a lockout starting July 1. the bigger question is can they avoid a late start to the season or will it be a shortened season like in 98-99.

Ryan (Rowlett, TX)

After this season's success, does Dirk drop off a bit, or do you think he will still have the same drive as before?

Jeff Caplan
  (4:31 PM)

I think Dirk will have the same drive he has always had. I think this summer will just be a much more peaceful one for him.

Jeffers (Castaic Lake)

DeShawn Stevenson says HEAT have no class, then shows no class of his own with his big mouth and tasteless T-stirt. Do our Mavs bring this guy back ?

Jeff Caplan
  (4:32 PM)

That was quite the contrast. Will Stevenson be back? I wouldn't bet on it, but I don't completely rule it out either.

Jeff Caplan
  (4:33 PM)

OK, everyone I've got to get back to work. Tons of stuff going on today. Be sure to check espndallas.com often for all your Mavs news.
