Chat with AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (11:00 AM)

Good morning gang... plenty to get to... second cup of coffee in hand... let's go!

Adam (LA)

Drop Matusz for your boy Karstens?

AJ Mass
  (11:01 AM)

Well, he is (apparently) "my boy" - so yes.

Brendan (Baltimore)

Oswalt, droppable in a 10-team mix?

AJ Mass
  (11:02 AM)

Not sure I'd drop him, but if bench space is limited - and with a DL stint likely? There's real reason for concern here.

james (Los Angeles )

AJ, can I play Jemele over Kinsler?

AJ Mass
  (11:03 AM)

For short stretches, yes. I'm not sure I'm impressed. Saw him yesterday, and he didn't exactly *WOW* me, but I also don't want to make the mistake of using just one game as a guide.

Ryan (DC)

Matt Garza or Billingsley safe 2-starts for next week?

AJ Mass
  (11:05 AM)

I like Garza better of the two, if you need to decide - but have no fears of either.

Mary Murphy (SYTYCD)

Is Jemile Weeks officially aboard the hot tamale train?

AJ Mass
  (11:06 AM)

Oh, dear. Where's Mia Michaels when you need her? On an aside, that "error" yesterday by Weeks was totally Mark Ellis' fault. Brilliant act of sabotage!

Tim (ABQ, NM)

A-Rod has been under the radar for the most part this season...what do you expect the rest of the year?

AJ Mass
  (11:08 AM)

I don't think it's possible for A-Rod to be under the radar. I expect him to be top 30 hitter... which may not be awe-inspiring, but at 3B, it's huge.

Dan (NYC)

AJ, I know you get lots of questions like "What can I expect in return if I want to trade away Player X"... What do you think about creating a trade board (similar to the NFL Draft Pick Value Board) showing what some comparible values would be for players. (eg say Carlos Gonzalez is a 10 and Lincecum is an 8 and McLouth is a 2, therefore it is an even value trade). Might be a lot of work, but highly useful. (obviously just using standard league rules)

AJ Mass
  (11:09 AM)

Dan - great idea, but the execution wouldn't work because of daily stats altering the list so constantly. I actually use something similar to answer those questions, but it would be impossible to publish routinely.

Steve (DC)

Thoughts on Logan Morrison going forward?

AJ Mass
  (11:10 AM)

Better second-half on the horizon.

Louis (Tempe, AZ)

Howie Kendrick seems to get no respect, but his numbers have been good. ESPN ratings show Adam Jones ranked much higher, so I guess I should make the switch?

AJ Mass
  (11:11 AM)

I actually like Kendrick better than DigDug ROY - remember, Player Rater is only YTD.

Jeff S. (Vermont)

champions of small sample sizes would argue with you, a once a week update would be more than sufficient, knowing that it bars injury developments.

AJ Mass
  (11:14 AM)

You're not entirely wrong, Jeff. However, I think the reason you need to factor in the daily updates is more to capture the knee-jerk change in opinion on players that occur after a great/bad game which artificially will impact value. (Madison Bumgarner/Chris Heisey, for example.)

Batman (Gotham City)

Who finishes with the better season, McCutchen or Jupton?

AJ Mass
  (11:15 AM)

Upton ahead now, and extends the lead by season's end.

Bud (Couch)

Can you talk a little about Brennan Boesch? I feel like he gets no respect because of his 2nd half last year...but he was a rook. He has improved no? thanks AJ>

AJ Mass
  (11:16 AM)

I think he'll slide a bit again over the next few months, but I'm not one to label a player "bad 2nd half player" because he can't sustain amazing 1st half numbers.

Josh (Boston)

Help out a fellow Bronx Science grad? Need to lose one of Brantley, Dunn, Pagan or Smith - what's your call?

AJ Mass
  (11:17 AM)

I'm, pardon the pun, Dunn with Adam.

Kyle B (St. Louis)

What's it going to take to pry Jose Reyes away from his owners these days?

AJ Mass
  (11:19 AM)

Not sure you can, unless you have Tulo and a top-5 starter.

Frank (PA)

Has Tim Stauffer graduated from a "streamer" to a "must own"?

AJ Mass
  (11:20 AM)

Not quite... but part of that is my disdain for the Padres lineup making those wins unlikely. Peripherals, though, are solid.

Horton (Whoville)

You starting Ubaldo tonight @NYY?

AJ Mass
  (11:21 AM)

No, hence the No. 15 in today's DN.

Rob (NJ)

Is Zimmerman a safe start in CHI (AL)? You have him listed as a 6 matchup in your daily notes...

AJ Mass
  (11:23 AM)

Look at the rank and not the QR. With interleague play, it's almost entirely useless -- unless there's a huge discrepancy that is not the result of a small sample size.

alan (LA)

what No. is the rough cut off line for starting/benching a pitcher on DN? I know it can vary day to day.

AJ Mass
  (11:25 AM)

I like to think of it as: Top 5 are "above the Wandy Line" as it were, 5-10 are also must-starts... 11-20 are the gut calls (bad pitchers to take a chance on, good pitchers to maybe skip) and 21+ are usually not recommended.

James (new jersey)

Lost Pujols, here are my choices,Smoak,Huff,Helton..any thoughts..

AJ Mass
  (11:26 AM)

Helton for me, but much as when I was working in a casino, Smoak is slowly growing on me.

Benny (NY)

Not to take what you just said too literally but Nolasco is right at #10 on the DN. Does that mean you're starting him or still wait and see if he can straighten himself out?

AJ Mass
  (11:29 AM)

I think we can all agree, that was just a guideline. Some days there just aren't enough "must-starts" - Nolasco has a very good matchup, but he's been awful. I'm leaning to starting him as a result (hence No. 10) but gave you enough ammo to talk yourself out of it if you're unsure.

Tom (San Diego)

Carrasco has been hot! Why so low on DN?

AJ Mass
  (11:32 AM)

Just one of those calls I have to make... 12 is not so low... 22 would be low... When you're looking to evaluate the chances of just one start, there's bound to be a few names that may seem out of place to you...

shawn (St louis)

Hafner or Trumbo ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:32 AM)

I'd go with Travis to not hit the wall.

JJ (Boston)

Wiggy or Reynolds at the hot corner until Prado returns?

AJ Mass
  (11:34 AM)

I'm Thiggy for Wiggy! Or somthing like that to imply I prefer Ty.

Craig (ny)

angel pagan or coco crisp?

AJ Mass
  (11:35 AM)

Not loving either option much, but I'll go with Pagan.

shawn (St louis)

Is Danks back in your gracious of 'must start'? ROS outlook...

AJ Mass
  (11:36 AM)

Not as bad as the 0-8 start. Not as good as the 3-0 June. Still playing by ear...

Mike (Tampa, FL)

Is 20 wins in roto too much to make up ROS? Should I punt the category and try and pad my ratio stats?

AJ Mass
  (11:38 AM)

Wins are really not a category you can predict... and there's no real way to punt it. Certainly you can decide to avoid chasing them by not streaming for the sake of getting chances at wins, but they'll either come or they won't - and are more likely to come by focusing on ratio stats.

Paul (Chicago)

Weiters or Ramos, who you like?

AJ Mass
  (11:39 AM)

Ramos by a smidge.

Adam Dunn (Chicago)

Me not good hitter no more?

AJ Mass
  (11:40 AM)

When did Adam Dunn turn into David Sedaris?

Mark (NY)

Who would you rather have ROS, J. Upton or Ellsbury

AJ Mass
  (11:41 AM)

My Jacoby love is well-documented, but I'm going to go with Justin here.

Jerrold (Austin, TX)

Thoughts on Cory Luebke? Does he stay in the rotation even when Harang returns from the DL?

AJ Mass
  (11:42 AM)

Depends on the performance, of course, but my understanding is that this move would have happened soon even without Aaron getting hurt... so, barring disaster, yes.

Steve (Detroit)

Will Dan Haren get back on track?

AJ Mass
  (11:44 AM)

I don't think one bad outing against the Mets is enough to declare him "off track" in the first place.

Collin (Indy)

Better second half: Chacin or Haren?

AJ Mass
  (11:45 AM)

...and to hammer it in more, Haren by a mile.

Captain Obvious (Commonsenseville)

Is Adrian Gonzalez a good baseball player?

Fletch (Los Angeles)

Ryan Roberts is my starting 3b, can i keep him there for the ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:46 AM)

I'd certainly need to know what my other options are... but I don't see a 20/20 finish.

How Fantasy Sports Explains the World (NY Times Bestseller List)

buy me! buy me! buy me!

AJ Mass
  (11:47 AM)

How could I resist posting this one?

Patrick (Second Place)

Zimmerman/Bedard/Scherzer...please rank ROS. Thanks.

AJ Mass
  (11:48 AM)

I like that order nicely, yes I do.

Tom Tuttle (Tacoma)

Best fill-in at 3B until Wright's return: McGehee, Polanco or Moose Tacos?

AJ Mass
  (11:50 AM)

Casey for the short-term, due to Placido's aches and pains.

Mark (Harris Field)

What year did you graduate Science?

AJ Mass
  (11:53 AM)

'88 -- Steve is a cool penguin.

Brad (Atlanta)

Talk to the suits and set-up an ESPN Big Brother show.

AJ Mass
  (11:54 AM)

I love them, but no way I am living in a house with Tristan and EK all summer. Sorry... veto!

Pat (NJ)

Ianetta or Posada ROY?

AJ Mass
  (11:55 AM)

I have to go with Chris. Jorge is not selling me that he'll be solid in September - especially with the Yankees likely to bring in another bat, as they always do.

AJ Mass
  (11:55 AM)

I have to go with Chris. Jorge is not selling me that he'll be solid in September - especially with the Yankees likely to bring in another bat, as they always do.

Bryan (Boston)

Think Broxton is the closer ROS when he comes back?

AJ Mass
  (11:56 AM)

I think he gets another shot at it... and I also expect him to drop the ball.

Justin (NYC)

ROS, scott baker or hiroki kuroda

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

Baker.

Charlie (Denver)

Rios or Morrison ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

LoMo.

Monica (Miami)

Mauer or Avila ROY? I have both.

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

Have to trust Avila more.

chris (nyc)

Chris Carpenter or Chaz Billingsly ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:58 AM)

Carpenter.

Steve (Punting Wins follow up)

What did you mean by ratio stats?

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

ERA and WHIP are ratios. Wins, saves and strikeouts are "counting stats" - can't go down.

Dale (Atlanta)

Would you trade Daniel Hudson to get Shin Soo-Choo?

AJ Mass
  (12:00 PM)

All things being equal, I'd keep Hudson. But it's not zany to make the deal, especially if you're strong in SP.

Marc (CT)

Whats wrong with Jason Werth?

AJ Mass
  (12:01 PM)

Apart from the poor choice in hair products?

Sportsnation (Everywhere)

EK or Tristian ROS?

AJ Mass
  (12:01 PM)

Depends on your needs.

AJ Mass
  (12:02 PM)

That's the buzzer gang... thanks to all for your Q's. Can't do it without you. Twitter is there for those I couldn't get to... until next week, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor!
