Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (11:59 AM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to the weekly boxing chat. Big weekend ahead with the Alexander-Matthysse triplheader on HBO, Sturm-Macklin on Epix and EpixHD.com, John Molina in action on FNF tonight and the return of James Kirkland tonight on Teelfutura. So we have a lot to go through. And the new notebook is up. It's loaded to check it out. Story on Alexander should also be up shortly and there are tons of news stories and blogs from the week. So let's get to it.

Brody (NYC)

Hey Dan,Any info on PBF/Ortiz tickets? Thanks a lot.

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

That has not been announced yet because the venue deal -- which will almost surely be the MGM -- is not 100 percent done yet. But they go on tour starting Tuesday, so they won't do a tour without announcing the venue and ticket prices, they'll be announced maybe today, certainly by Tuesday.

Bobby (Louisville)

hey Dan! Is not realistic for Pac-man to take an easy tune-up fight in the Phillipines this summer? Would be nice to have a KO on regular TV, and also a 3 fight year.

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

Not gonna happen. Forget about it. Nice thought, but zero chance.

David (Bethel, CT)

Have we heard if Showtime or HBO will be handling the Pacquiao-Marquez fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

There's quite a bit on this in today's notebook, so check it out. But no decision has been made yet.

Doug (Tampa)

What are your initial feelings on Cotto sitting out all the way till Decemeber for Margacheato? Bad for Cotto (missing out on $$$, not staying sharp, etc) or Good for Cotto? (Well needed Rest, More time with Emmanuel Steward, etc) Thanks.

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Cotto is a pro and I dont think it makes an iota of difference. He looked pretty sharp against Mayorga after a long layoff. At this stage of his career and after so many tough fights, I don't think it hurts him to be off for a bit.

Horn (Vegas)

How important is it for Canelo to learn English for crossover appeal?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

It's big and he is learning. I suspect in the next year to 18 months he will be able to do interviews and interact with English-speaking fans pretty well.

Horn (Vegas)

We've killed Broner in this chat for his performance against Ponce. However, freaks always give credit where it is due. Much respect to Broner for stepping up.

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

100 percent agree. Very impressive performance from The Problem.

Doug (Tampa)

Dano, Assuming Cloud wins this week and retains his trinket. What are the chances of a Cloud vs Pascal scrap? I think that would be an exciting fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Would love that fight. I think there is a decent chance we could see it too. I think it would fit perfectly on the Hopkins-Dawson undercard.

rob(jersey) [via mobile]

Is TR any closer to finding an opponent for Nonito? Arce would be the biggest money fight right?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Not even close. They still have work out the promotional situation. I expect they will soon.

JP (Columbus, OH)

All hail King Freak

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Naturally.

Dan (St. Louis)

Dan I am legitimately ticked at you. I landed a hot date to the Devon Alexander fight (think of a mix between Sarah Michelle Gellar and Megan Fox, only hotter) because I promised she'd get to hang with you after the fight. Now you're not going and she is no longer interested. What the heck Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

I am not responsible for your false assumptions. Have fun at the show. I will be in New York working on the Epix telecast of Sturm-Macklin, so watch that show and then watch the HBO show.

James (Atlanta, GA)

excited to be calling the fight this weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Yes, I am looking forward to it. I spent a while this morning watching Sturm and Macklin fights and also Manuel Charr and Danny Williams, since we're probably doing that heavyweight fight too. It's on the undercard.

Eric (DC)

Pretty blunt comments from Arum about his own guy not being great. Is he pretty much trying to avoid another JuanMa disaster?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Not really sure what Arum's motivation is. I will say this -- it's easy to say he will make Chavez-Canelo right now when he knows Golden Boy has ZERO intention of doing it this year. Maybe GB should call his bluff?

brandon (Houston tx)

Any info in ricardo mayorga???

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

Nothing other than Golden Boy is talking about him as a possible September opponent for Canelo.

carlos austin tx [via mobile]

What's next for Berto?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

He is likely to return to HBO Sept. 24. They've been mentioning a fight with titlist Jan Zaveck. Oy vey.

@TheBoxingEmpire (The Lou)

D$$$ - before you predict, you should know you have a 2011 prediction record of 19-5. You are in 9th place in our poll out of 40 people. So let's hear it! Who do you have for this weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

I like Sturm over Macklin, Stiverne over Austin, Cloud over Mack and Alexander over Matthysse.

Bart (Texas)

Who steps in for Freddy Hernandez vs Melligen? Espn2 FNF

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Likely Sebastian Lujan, which I happen to think is better than the original fight.

kevin (cork ireland)

what happens to the heavyweight division if david haye wins and retires as he says he will

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

The sun will come out the next day and life goes on.

Mike (Chicago)

Lots of featherweight action in your notebook, but nothing on Chris John. Any news yet on his next opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Haven't heard a thing. I need to check into that.

Rico (Pittsburgh)

Any word on if there will be a 24/7 for PBF/Ortiz?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

If you followed me on Twitter @danrafaelespn you would know that, yes, there will be one. And it will debut on Aug 27 before Maidanan-Guerrero on the East Coast and after the fight on the West Coast.

ROB (WASHINGTON DC)

Any news on Daniel Jacobs? Does Golden Boy not feel so highly of him anymore?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

I'm told Danny has a little bit of a hand injury and is resting it for right now, so he has nothing scheduled.

Lisa (Kentucky)

It's true Dan - you are a babe magnet

Chris (New York, NY)

Dan, where in NY will PBF and Ortiz be kicking off the media tour? Will fans be granted access? Thanks.

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Tuesday at noon at the Hudson Theater in New York and Wednesday at 8 pm PT at Nokia Plaza at LA Live in LA. Both are free and open to the public, but if you want to go, especially in NY where it is in a theater, you better get their early to get in.

pedro (miami)

is the rigondeaux figth on? do you know his oopponent ? has the wba ruled him as the next mandatory ? thanks, dan.

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Read today's notebook. It's all sorted out. Kinda complicated. But Rigondeaux likely will fight Aug. 19 on ESPN2 and Shimoda will defend against Ramos on HBO on July 9.

Robert (Charlottesville)

Dan, were you surprised that Froch wants the Super Six finals in Vegas vs New York, when NY is closer for his British fans?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Not at all. I think it's every fighters' dream to headline a big card in Las Vegas no matter where they are from.

Roy (Reno)

Dan, I love Sergio I think he is great for boxing but, his upcoming fight should not be WCB, save the money for the end of the year and stick him on BAD. Am I wrong?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Yes, you are wrong. Sergio Martinez is one of the elite fighters in the world and regardless of who he fights he deserves the biggest platform possible.

Chris (boise)

That was a bummer for Harold Saturday, 1 round! How did you think it went for him?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

I thought Harold was excellent even though it was quick. I think there's no reason he shouldn't get another shot to be involved.

Mike (San Diego)

I've heard some rumblings about Donaire ending his "holdout" and coming back to Top Rank. Any truth to that?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

They're working on it. I think ultimately, he will end up back with TR.

Matt (portland, OR)

Does Roy Jones promote Litzau's chin too? He must a forgot the Litzau can't take a punch.

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Marc (Salisbury, MD)

Any word on if EPIX has more boxing telecasts planned?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Yes they do. My understanding is that besides Saturday's show there could be maybe as many as 4 or so more this year.

Geoff (Burlington, ON)

Who do you think wins the K9-Powell title match this weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

I think Powell gets it done.

Shawn (Tempe)

So what was Lou's rant about yesterday?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

He didn't realize that HBO was televising Stiverne-Austin. He didn't belive his assistant Alex. So he had Alex call me on the speaker phone to tell him what the TV line up was for HBO. When I said Stiverne-Austin was the televised opener, he lost it. I'm not sure why he didn't know that was the TV because it was announced ages ago, but he was shocked and went off. Like most of us, he believes it is an utter disgrace that Ray Austin, even as the B-side of an opening fight, is being televised on HBO. I happen to agree. It's absolutely pathetic. I am interested in seeing Stiverne. Not against Austin, who does not belong on HBO.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

Is it just me, or does Pavlik/Bute interest you significantly more than Johnson/Bute?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Bute-Pavlik I find MUCH more interesting than Bute-Johnson. No offense to Johnson, who I absolutely love. But that is just how I feel.

Manny Ramirez (Ladera Ranch)

Dan is there bad blood between chavez and canelo?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

I don't think so, but they are being protrayed as rivals by their fans and the Mexican press.

Corey (Petersburg, WV)

What do you think of Arum calling it straight and saying he doesn't see Canelo nor Chavez Jr as "elite" fighters? I had to re-read that coming from the man who called Mosley one of the toughest challenges to Pacman.

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Maybe I just caught Bob in a dead honest moment, but I was surprised to hear it.

C.M. (Canada)

Your friend Kevin Iole has Carl Froch under his 'very likely' list for the HOF one day with Mosley, the Klits, Cotto, Calderon. Can you slap some sense into him, please?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

I saw that list in his column yesterday. Kevin has been a friend of mine for many years and I have the utmost respect for him as a writer and journalist. On this matter, we could not have more different opinions. Froch is an outstanding fighter, an exciting fighter and could potentially add a lot more to his resume to make him legit HOF material. At this point, I do not think he is a HOFer at all. Winning the Super Six would be be a big building block though.

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

I also happen to think that the Klitschko brothers should have been in the slam dunk category, regardless of what happens in the Haye and Adamek fights.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

I don't believe anyone mentioned it, but it was pretty funny to see Manny Steward in his street clothes-- while calling the B-Hop/Pascal fight-- after he worked the corner for Dawson in the Diacanou fight. His baby blue button-up shirt didn't exactly mesh well with the tuxedos next to him

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

He has done that before when he worked one fight on the card.

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

He has done that before when he worked one fight on the card.

Paul B (NY, NY)

I thought Canelo looked very impressive vs Rhodes and seems like he shored up his defense. What says you?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Totally agree.

steven (Louisville)

is there a chance we will get to see javier molina tonight in the swing fight on fnf?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

According to the stuff I get from the producers for each show, he is not. The fight that is slated to be the swing fight is Ricardo Williams Jr.

Micah (AZ )

I wonder if Direct TV has EPIX.

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Not sure, but if it doesn't you can watch Sturm-Macklin on the Epix website.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

Those of us at work remember the Alt-Tab button!

Corey (Petersburg, WV)

Tell your friends at Epix to pick up the Tarver-Green fight. It could be interesting.

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

They have been pitched that fight and have no plans to do so, in part because the fight is on something like a Wednesday, which does not work for them.

Philly Geoff (Raleigh, NC)

Why do you always refer to Brad Goodman as "Abdul" in your stories... is that kind of an inside joke between you two? And is it necessary?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

That is his nickname. I didn't give it to him.

Corey (Petersburg, WV)

Is Pavlik fighting August 6th, or 20th? Reading reports of both dates. What have you heard?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

August 6, as per Top Rank.

Darin (Silver Spring, MD)

If Mattysee wins tomorrow, I would love to see Maidana vs Mattysee sometime in the future. That would be two rams battling for sure...thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

I'd love to see that even if Matthysse loses. I have been saying that since late last year.

Dustin (Maine)

@danrafaelespn and @loudibella are the one two punch of boxing Twitter greatness

Darin (Silver Spring, MD)

Any guessimate on the ticket price ranges for the PBF/Ortiz fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

I think that is one of the things holding up the site deal right now. I suspect they're going to be very expensive. It wouldn't shock me if the top level is $1,500.

Rich (VT)

Great to see Real Sports revisit Anne Wolfe, she's quite the character. Any prediction on how Kirkland does tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Kirkland is fighting a dead man tonight. Dennis Sharpe is a nice guy but shouldn't be fighting anymore. If Kirkland loses this fight, he and Sharpe should retire.

Aaron (MA)

any info as to what the US TV outlet for the Marquez tune-up fight next month?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Depends which network lands the big one. Arum's aim is to have the net that lands Pac-JMM also do the Marquez tune-up on one of its platforms. So, for example, if HBO lands the fight I would expect Marquez-Ramos to be on HBO Latino.

Liam (UK)

Doe you think Kell Brook will be the first person to stop N'Dou this weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

That be a great feather in Brook's cap, but I don't see it happening. Would be good for Brook though.

Walter (LA, CA)

As a DirecTV subscriber, no, they don't carry EPIX

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

If you feel strongly you should let DirecTV know. Never hurts to let them know. You're their customer.

Newt (Jacksonville)

Any chance Manny does a concert in Vegas after Floyd's fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

No. Manny has more class than that.

Dylan (Ft. Collins)

Gut feeling as to which network lands Marquez-Pacquiao III?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

I wish I knew. BUT if you stuck a gun to my head I would say HBO.

Mitch (Chicago)

Canelo AND Morales possibly on the Mayweather Ortiz PPV? I'll believe it when I see it but I have my fingers crossed for sure.

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

That is what GB is working on. I think they'll pull it off.

Peter (Philadelphia)

Looking forward to the Mike Jones fight tomorrow. If Mike wins, do you see him fighting again in 2011 and who do you think would be a good opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

He will certainly fight again this year, assuming he is healthy. He is supposed to fight Sept. 10 on the Gamboa undercard in AC.

Rocky Balboa (Hall of Fame)

YO DAN, I DID IT!

Jon Anik (Palookaville)

I'm going to test you at 1 pm with my primitive skills.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Good luck with that.

Dylan (Ft. Collins)

Movie theatre for Mayweather-Ortiz?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

GB hasn't announced it, but since they have done all of their recent big ones in the theaters I would say yes.

R! (Bay Area)

Why would HBO show freaking Ray Austin vs Bumane Stiverne?? Especially with Powell-K9 II on the same under card!! wtf

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Good question. The reason, I believe, is because they are interested in Stiverne. And since they are back in the heavyweight business with the Klitschkos they want to showcase some fresh faces in the division. So that is why Stiverne will be on. That is why Seth Mitchell will open the Aug. 27 show.

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

And since they are back in the heavyweight business with the Klitschkos they want to showcase some fresh faces in the division. So that is why Stiverne will be on. Walter (LA, CA)

Do you think Bob would really pit Mike Jones, as he mentioned, with Pacquiao in the next year or so if this fight with Floyd still can't be made?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

No, I don't think Mike Jones has any realistic chance of getting Pacquiao next year. What I do think is Bob said that to draw attention to the fact that Jones fights this weekend.

Bart (Texas)

@BobArum the real one ? I'm surprise he can tweet lol

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Yes, that is really Bob. He doesn't actually type his own tweets, but he has one of his guys in the office type what he wants tweeted.

Chris (Boston)

Any idea when, what network, and where the Eddie Chambers-Tony Thompson eliminator will be held? Its a great scrap and has title aspirations to it.

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Not yet.

MIKE (NY)

SO WHAT DATE IS COTTO/MARGARITO 2?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

WHY ARE YOU YELLING??? DECEMBER 3 IS THE DATE, ASSUMING IT IS SIGNED.

Chris (Boise)

You must have really freaked out the Mayweather fanatics that maintain you have it for him with that praising objective piece last week. Stop telling it like it is Dan, you're just confusing these lost souls.

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

My bad.

Andrew Baker (Falls Church, VA)

At this point I would say Canelo's resume is better than Chavez, agreed?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

It is definitely better, no question about it and not even close.

Don (Arlington, VA)

What's the latest on Sergei Dzindrik?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Nothing specific, but his co-promoter, Gary Shaw, says HBO owes him a fight before the end of the year. HBO guaranteeing him another fight win or lose just makes no sense to me and is a waste of a date and money.

rob(jersey) [via mobile]

Since you're calling thr fight from NYC and not covering a fight there - should the Affinia expect your patronage tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Are you a stalker?

Victor (Kansas City)

On a scale of 1-10 (10 being amazed), how would you rate Canelo's performance?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

8.

Julian (Davenport, IA)

If GBP does put Morales on the Sept 17 fight-card, would he be in vegas or Mexico?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Morales, if he fights, would be on the undercard at the Mayweather-Ortiz site.

mike (ny,ny)

I ask you this a lot. How many active boxers do you think you can name? I would be baffled by this number.. ever think about it?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Never thought about. I would say hundreds, of active guys anyway.

al (denver)

hey dan, have you heard if there will be any legal reprecussions for floyd skipping his deposition?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

I have not heard yet what the penalty is. Keep in mind, he failed to show for a civil case, not a criminal case. I think that makes a big difference.

Richie (Bronx NY)

Any talks on a rematch for Juan Ma Lopez and Orlando Salido?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Yes, probably in the fall if Salido wins his fight July 23.

Mike (Detroit)

Hey Dan, what are the chances of getting Canelo in the ring with Sergio Martinez at some point in the future? Your thoughts....

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

I dont think that fight ever happens. Why would GB want to get Canelo wiped out?

Steg Money (Minnetonka)

Hey Dan - long time freak, first time submitter. Very disappointed G. Jones pulled out of fight against Ryan Coyne due to injury. Will the Irish Outlaw get a chance to fight Jones again when he is healthy?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Welcome Freak. Coyne is probably SOL. The only reason Coyne got the fight is because Jones and his promoter, King, made a deal with Sauerland to take this interim bout and then do the mandatory against interim titlist Yoan Pablo Hernandez. Nothing has changed and the mandatory is still due. That fight is supposed be in Aug. 27. So if Jones is healthy, he probably skips Coyne, doesn't reschedule and fights Hernandez in Germany.

Kevin (Grand Rapids, MI)

How does a 3-12-2 guy get to be in the main event on a TV fight? That was a pretty horrible matchup even for the Club Nokia Fight Night.

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

I'm sure there were opponent issues, but a 3-12 guy under any circumstances is unacceptable. Horrible main event. I didn't even bother watching it to be honest.

Rick (Marina)

Dan-O, after a poor showing last week on my behalf I have stepped my game up and have read all of the recent blogs, the notebook, the rankings and schedule changes. I' am prepared this week, sir!

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Good Freak.

Gus Johnson (High Blood Pressure City)

OMG DAN I JUST READ YOUR NOTEBOOK AND THERE WAS BILLY DIB NEWS OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

LOL!

R! (Bay Area)

Stiverne who got KOd in 4 rds by Demetrice King??? Why the interest in this guy?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Because he is a huge puncher and looked very good in his last fight in January on the Bradley-Alexander undercard knocking out an undefeated guy in what was basically a 50-50 fight.

Steve (NYC)

What happened to Povetkin?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Who?

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

What is the nature of Julio's family emergency to have to pull out of the bout? Is this anything that will affect his career long-term? Hope not...it's always sad when "real life" has to redrail a fighter.

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Did you read the article I wrote? His mother and sister were injured in a car accident and returned to Colombia to take care of them. They are supposed to be fine, but he had to be there for a while.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

Any chance Mayweather-Ortiz ends up at the Silverdome ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Any chance I ban you?

Micah (AZ)

Danny boy. You think were safe for Haye not pulling out yet? I don't want to count my chickens yet.

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

When the bell rings son, when the bell rings.

Mike (Brooklyn)

Dan-Are you working the Epix fight with Lennox?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

Yes, our team is Bruce Beck on blow-by-blow, Lennox and me. John Duddy will be on site in Germany to do some interviews.

Rags (NYC)

Personally, I'm not sold the Haye-Klitschko fight will be for real until the 2nd round!

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

LOL! Hey, it might not go that long.

Mitch (Chicago)

When I heard Joel had a family emergency I was glad to hear you were ok.

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Pay the man, Shirley.

Alec (Nashville)

So are they keeping Haye in a plastic bubble up until the time of the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Not sure, but supposedly he stopped sparring about 3 weeks ago.

Paul (Dublin)

Hey Dan, so you finally recognise Macklin as an Irishman. Did Mack give you a rap on the knuckles during your interview!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Not at all. His parents are from Ireland and he has an Irish passport, but he was born and lives in England.

Rick (Marina)

Dan is this your first announcing gig?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

As far play by play, yes, although I have been on television for ESPN making appearances for years.

Andrew (Sydney)

In this day and age, where fighters are protected and fight rarely, predominantly at home. Carl Froch's achievements in his last 6 fights even with his loss to Kessler, make him HOF material.

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

I don't agree. Might he warrant it at some point? Of course. Not yet as far as I see it.

Roberto (NC)

Who would you like to see Canelo fight next

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

I think the ideal opponent would Vanes Martirosyan. It's a good fight in the ring I believe. Vanes is a worthy challenger, but not a guy who Canelo would be out of his depths against. I would make Canelo the favorite but Vanes is not THAT big of an underdog. They're both young, both undefeated and it would draw great in So. Cal since Canelo has a huge Mexican fan base and the Armenians would turn out for Vanes in a big fight. And Vanes will be the mandatory eventually anyway, even if it's not due yet. If GB and TR honestly can do business together this is a fight they could make in five minutes and show the boxing world they are serious about working together when it makes sense. This makes sense.

Tony (Las Vegas)

Duke was well represented in the draft last night

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Kyrie No. 1!

Rob (Denton, Tx)

If the Canelo-JCC JR. fight did happen, do you think it would be in the US or Mexico ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

I would imagine it would be in the US with a heavy Mexican crowd in LA or Vegas.

Power Pellets (Las Vegas)

In this day and age when fighters are protected and fight rarely, predominantly at home. Carl Froch having Rachel Cordingly makes him HOF material.

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

She certainly doesn't hurt!

rob(jersey) [via mobile]

The Sun reported that Haye is upset with Genaro Rodriguez being the ref. Would anyone suffice for the "Excuse Maker"?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Not sure why there would be an issue over him as referee. He is a respected referee and has done some big fights, including Klitschko wins and his loss to Sanders.

Chris (Vancouver BC)

D$, Im a little late with this comment, but I just saw the replay of a shobox from a couple weeks ago. What were your thoughts on that Armenian that knocked out Archie Ray Marquez? That guy looked like the goods to these eyes.

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

I liked him and hope to see him again. His name is Art Hovhannisyan.

John, Austin [via mobile]

Any truth to the rumor that Jose Silaiman is changing his name to Metta World Idiot?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

PAY THE MAN SHIRLEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dan (NC)

I want to see Roy Jones fight Jermaine Taylor. Is that wrong?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

You sick. Banishment are you hungry?

Matt (Liberty, MO)

Do you think Guillermo Jones' injury is legit (slipping out of the ring sparring) or something else is up? Also, will he fight Coyne or skip him to fulfill his mandatory?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

I think it was probably legit. Why would back out of a fight like that? No point to it.

Banishment (Dan's beard)

Hungry? I'm friggin starving, Master!

Kevin (Denver)

Freaks..for only $17.00 we can order and have 100' of bubble wrap shipped to Haye's camp...who's in?

Dennis (Little Ferry, NJ)

Can you give us a hint on which fights epix is interested for the rest of the year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

I'd tell you if I knew, but they don't really know yet. They are listening to offers from various promoters. They do intend to do fights in America, not just pick up Euro fights.

tk (sf, calif)

are you doing play-by-play or color?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Bruce Beck is doing blow-by-blow. Lennox and I are the analysts.

Josh (Arkansas) [via mobile]

Do you really think that if b-hop wins against Dawson he will try to fight for a heavyweight title?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

No.

Kris Krepps (GR)

Do you expect Floyd to apoligize to Manny the same way Oscar did, Just to get the lawsuit dropped?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Dont know, but I suspect that an aplogy would go a long way to making the suit go away.

Dan (New Jersey)

Why Alexander over Matthysse? Speed alone?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Matthysse is a good fighter with a ton of power, but I view Devon as a better fighter in every other aspect of the game.

steven (louisville)

Dan, is the hbo card tommorrow 3 fights or 2? i have heard from some sources that it is only 2.

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

It is 3 fights -- Stiverne-Austin, Cloud-Mack and Alexander-Matthysse. Period.

Steve (Hartford)

Any update on the Hopkins v Dawson fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Nothing specific yet, but Oct. 15 is one date being discussed.

Josh [via mobile]

Just got fired from my job, but hey! at least I get to follow the chat live.

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Silver lining in everything.

antonio silva (paris)

dan do you think billy dib can capture the title in july?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Do you think I care?

Peter (Philly)

Props on your tweet on the passing of the late Rod Beaton. I used to love his USA Today baseball work.

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Rod was awesome to work with. I worked closely with him when I was at USA TODAY on a loanership in 1998 (and was covering baseball) and then worked with him again when I returned to the paper in 2000 to cover boxing. Just the BEST guy in the world. And knew more baseball than anyone I know. I knew he had been ill so his death was not a shock to anyone, but sad nonetheless. I am really bummed out about it.

Micah (AZ )

Wow. Easy. Just went to EPIX website and got a 14 day free trial. I'm there for tomorrow night for your TV debut.

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

If you have not read the notebook, here is the link: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/columns/story?columnist=rafael_dan&id=6699042

Ron (Boston)

Do you and Chris Mannix have a legit beef?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Not at all. Mannix is a good dude. We just joke around.

Glondy Gaxiola (Mexico)

Mr. King Freak m all excited about the mathysse alexander fight, im going with mathysse i know you are going with alexander but its cool to have different opinions, and i also would love the mathysse vs maidada fight, any toughts of Kochulito he is fighting tomorrow. Thnaks for all the info!

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Matthysse can certainly win the fight if he lands those bombs, so it's not a crazy pick at all. That's why the fight is interesting -- two contrasting styles where either guy can win. I think Montiel is coming back too soon after getting concussed badly by Donaire.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

In honor of working with Lennox, will you throw in a few "absolutelys" on the telecast?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Definitely. :)

Darin (MD)

What is "Pay the Man Shirley" from?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Freaks care to answer?

Roy (Reno)

Dan, what are your thoughts on Austin Trout? He seems to be quietly putting together a nice resume. I believe he can be a player at 154.

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

I agree. Good boxer and a couple of solid recent wins under his belt. His title is a paper trinket, but the kid has talent.

Kevin (Denver)

Just wondering, but did ESPN approach you six years ago, or did your agent solicit ESPN?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

They called me out of the blue. Didn't have an agent at that time. Now I have the best one in the business.

Jon (Spring, TX)

From Norman Chad, the newspaper writer. If you watch the World Series of Poker on ESPN, he'll throw them in there from time to time when he commentates.

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

And from his newspaper column -- Pay the man, Shirley. One of my favorite columnists. Read him every week in the Washington Post.

Brady (Golden Valley, MN)

I wonder if Tim Bradley will watch the fight tomorrow and think: no way Lucas Matthysse could survive one of my accidental head butts.

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Bob (Rhode Island)

Dan, which fight draws more PPV buys ? Pac-Marquez III or Mayweather-Ortiz?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Interesting question. I would suspect Mayweather would do a little better. The fact that he has not fought for awhile is important because there is demand for him. He is also an American fighting an American and you cannot underestimate that. Ortiz, however, is not known outside of boxing. Pacquiao and Marquez are both big names and fought two awesome fights already which will help them. Mayweather coming first on the calendar might help but then again him coming first could also be used to help promote the Pacquiao fight on the PPV. It will also depend which TV company gets Pacquiao (since Mayweather is already on HBO PPV). All those factors though, I think Mayweather will do a little better based on his absence and him being American.

Tom E (Lambertville, NJ)

Bruce Beck is one of the best sports guys in the business. He's the best local sports newscaster in NYC. Cool that he's doing the EPIC play by play.

Dennis (Little Ferry, NJ)

If Khan convincingly defeats Judah, will that be enough to topple Bradley off his top seed in your ranking?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Have to see the fight.

Cullen (Naperville, IL)

D$, any news on Edwin Rodriguez?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Yes, DiBella said he is healthy, training and probably will be back later this summer.

Gene (Denver)

Love seeing the tweets between you and Dibella, man that guy gets fired up easy!

Dustin (Columbus)

Hey Dad, great article about Pavlik in the notebook..any idea who would be his Aug opponent? Thanks!

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

They do not have an opponent yet, but they want a southpaw.

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

My Alexander-Matthysse feature has been published: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/columns/story?columnist=rafael_dan&id=6700348

Jack (London)

Dan - do you get sick of the negative comments you receive from bias and ill-informed freaks. I think you do great work and the Freak Nation has your back.

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Thank you. Negative stuff goes with the territory. You get used to it. Whatever.

Vic (San Antonio, Tx)

I agree Dan. The Canelo-Martirosyan fight seems like a back & forth slugger between two young hungry lions hope it gets made.

chico (patterson, ca)

Don't you think the fact that Canelo fighting on the same PPV will push the Mayweather numbers way up? If GB can get Canelo in LA and Morales on the undercard in Vegas, is 1.5million PPV's out of the question?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

That is another very important factor. If Canelo is on the PPV he will definitely help raise the PPV totals.

Anthony (NYC)

I know Deontay Wilder is still very early in the development stage, but what are your impressions of his progress almost 3 years into his career?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Still a TON to learn and improve on. Raw like sushi, but has the size and power in his right hand.

Mario Mungia (Corpus Christi, Texas)

Is it weird that I'm more curious to see the Cloud-Mack fight rather than the Alexander-Matthysse?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

A little.

RJ (MPLS)

Have you given you official prediction for Klitschko Vs Haye yet?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Nope.

Killer (Queens)

Dan are you surprised the amount of disrespect Wlad still gets from people in the boxing biz from people like Freddie Roach and Angelo Dundee, both of whom are heaping praise on David Haye? It's perplexing to me.

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Agreed.

Ben (Jersey City)

After the stoppage on FNF, your take on F. Guerrero dropping down in weight? Drained from the cut? Couldn't absorb the punches? Or just needs to learn how to tie up his opponent when he is hurt?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

I didnt get the impression that the weight had anything whatsoever to do with it. Kid got caught and didn't react well to it. He took the loss like a man, no excuses. Hopefully, he learns from it and it makes him a better fighter. For Brewer, you gotta give the old guy his credit. Great win for him.

Power Pellets (Las Vegas)

Hey Dan another ESPN reporter alluded to bonuses that you receive if you get a certain amount of Twitter followers. Is this true? If it is I think Freaks worldwide would go on a promotional tour to get you even more followers.

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

That is not true. At least I have never heard that ever. If it is true, somebody owes me a few bucks! :)

Steve (NYC)

Dan, any word on Paulie Malignaggi and what is next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Nothing set because his hand is still messed up.

Horn (Vegas)

With Bob Arum's comments, is he basically admitting that he made a mistake in letting the potential Juanma/Gamboa fight marinate too long?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

I dont think so, but I think he thinks Canelo and Chavez could be more easily beaten than he thought either Gamboa and Lopez would be. He was also trying to make Lopez and Gamboa into a big PPV. Canelo and Chavez, even now, would already do a big number on PPV.

fred (PA)

If cotto knocks margarito out, is there any doubt in your mind that margs cheated in the first fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Regardless of what happens in the rematch there is no doubt in my mind that Margarito cheated in the first fight.

Roman (Atlanta)

Dan, I follow you, Chris Mannix, and Al Berstein on Twitter for boxing news. Any other "must-follow" people on Twitter for good boxing information/insight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Take a look at who I follow on my page. I follow lots of boxing folks. Following the promotional companies, like Top Rank, GB, Main Events, Goossen, Shaw, etc..., is good. HBO and Showtime update their stuff a lot. Lots of boxers are on there too.

Taseen from Brooklyn [via mobile]

Since Zab Judah is forminable again, will he be put up against Pac-Man anytime soon?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

If Judah wins and Pacquiao beats Marquez I would imagine Judah would certainly be a consideration. That is one of the reasons HBO wants Judah/Main Events to sign a multi-fight contract with the network before the Khan fight -- to hedge against losing the Pacquiao fight and having Judah, if he beats Khan, walk away to Showtime for the fight.

Mike Manning Tuolumne,CA [via mobile]

Do you know if the rumor that Floyd Mayweather paid for the funeral of Genaro Hernandez is true?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

It's not a rumor. It's true. I wrote a column about it a week or so ago. Look in my blog archive for it.

Pavel (Poland)

I heard Golden Boy Promotions wants to put Morales at Mayweather-Ortiz card, any idea who could be his opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

I have not heard about specific opponent selections.

Chris (Boise)

What do you think when people say that Team Vargas mishandled and ruined him by throwing him at Tito too early? I think it's bunk personally.

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

I agree. He got like a $4 million-plus payday and was one of the best fighters in the world at the time. You don't turn down that opportunity -- to make life-changing money and to unify titles. Those who say he was "thrown in" too early are revising history.

Anthony (Bronx, NY)

Vargas knocked Tito down in that fight. He was ready. Just lost a good fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Exactly.

Micah (AZ)

So true. It boggles my mind to think who is advising Bradley!! I don't even know the kid but to walk away from Kahn after YOU called HIM out??

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Exactly. He should be getting ready to make about $1.5 million next month. Instead, he's doing nothing.

Lonnie (Cincinnati) [via mobile]

Pardon Jack Johnson!

ccrosbie (Kaysville)

Vargas had beaten Winky Wright and Ike Quartey (who could have gotten the nod vs. ODLH). He was Tito's best option at that point. Personally I'm shocked when I realize Vargas only had 26 wins in his career -- he did peak early for sure.

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Yes he did.

Luis (San Antonio, TX.)

Dano, any idea who Martinez will fight since HBO turned down the fight with Barker ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Somebody didn't read the notebook. Barker is approved by HBO.

Glen (Denver)

I've been seeing Ward listed as high as a 2 to 1 favorite against Froch in the Super Six Final. Is it just me or is that a little - err a lot - out of whack?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

I think it's more of an even fight than that. I would make Ward only a slight favorite.

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

I think it's more of an even fight than that. I would make Ward only a slight favorite.

Chris (Boise)

What's more exciting- Floyd getting back in the ring or knowing that we will be seeing more Marty Funkhouser when Curb Your Enthusiasm returns.

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

I can't wait for Curb to come back!!!!!

ESPN Chat Watch (USA)

John (Milwaukee)Is there some tension between other chats and yours? Following a few of them, and it seems that way. Much love for all of them though :)Jon Anik (1:17 PM)Not that I know of. I know Dan Rafael and I go back and forth sometimes, but we're cool. Had him on my Boston radio show dozens of times. Not to worry, we're back to Wednesdays next week.

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

LOL. Anik is my pal. Just good natured ribbing. However, how dare he challenge me with his primitive skills.

Chris C (Washington DC)

Hey Dan, If HBO gets the pacquiao v marquez fight do you have any idea if they will do a 24/7 because they just approved the mayweather one?

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

If HBO gets Pacquiao-Marquez take it to the bank -- there will be a 24/7.

Mikey (Gilroy, CA)

Any Info on tickets for the Guerrero Vs Maidana fight in San Jose.

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

Not quite yet.

Dennis (Little Ferry, NJ)

Can you make suggestions to the Epix top honchos to also look into fights other than Europe and N.America? Say Asia, particularly Japan. I'm sure the freaks will appreciate it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

I'll make a mention.

Julio (Panama)

Dan-O , can chavez make 154 or is he staying at 160..Just wondering since you mentioned Canelo-Martiyoshan why not Chavez Martiyoshan..cheers

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Chavez is at 160 and supposedly cant/wont come down to 154.

Gabriel (LA)

Whats next for Giovanni Segura?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

Hopefully, a guy better than 7-5 who had no idea how to throw a punch.

Javante (..............)

Golovkin vs. Ouma was a fun fight. I'd like to see HBO get Golovkin, Geale, Pirog or Sturm on and build a fight between one of them and Sexy Martinez. There are some good middleweight fights out there to be made.

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

I agree 100 percent. Not huge names, but some exciting guys.

Anthony (Bronx, NY)

I hope Marquez has better taste in beverages this time if there is a 24/7.

Richie (Bronx NY)

Excited about FNF in 3D.....

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

I'm sure it will be cool, but I dont have a 3D TV and have never seen 3D TV.

Sam (Santa Monica)

Speaking of Pirog, is he going to fight soon or sit around another 10 months, fight someone not very good, look unimpressive in the fight, then complain about how the big names are avoiding him?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

No idea what is in the works for him. Nothing as far as I know. I spoke to his promoter the other day. They'd like to get on US TV but nothing in the works as of now.

andrew f. (new york)

"if kirkland loses this fight, he and sharpe should retire". pay the dan, shirley!

Bruce (Glasgow)

Is the beef with you and Ron Borges genuine?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Of course not, Borges and I are friends and have been for years. Doesn't mean we agree on everything, so no harm in a little Twitter smack talk.

tk (sf, calif)

so what happened to vargas' alleged comeback? he seemed dedicated to training and diet via his tweeter feed...but then he disappeared.

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

I think the more he thought about it the more he realized this is a bad, bad idea.

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

OK, Freaks, can't do a marathon chat today. Need to get packed and ready to roll. Headed to NYC in a bit for tomrorow's Epix telecast. Enjoy a good weekend of fights and make sure to check out all the stuff on the boxing page today. Talk to you next week. Peace.
