Chat with Pat Yasinskas

Robert (arlington, texas)

Hey Pat-will you be allowed to attend the Josh Freeman mini-camp or is closed off from the media?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:51 PM)

Yes, I'm planning on being there Tuesday. Sessions are open to media, but not to public. Initially, I thought I'd be doubling up and covering rookie symposium, which is at the same location. But the NFLPA, which is running the symposium, is only allowing minimal media access, so I think we're going to let our television side handle that one. But I'll be at Bucs practice Tuesday and should have several items out of there.

Max [via mobile]

Will the yanks get any star pitchers by spending bigbucks

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:52 PM)

Think you might be in the wrong chat.

Ike not Tina turner (taylor made,oh)

Pat i love your blogs keep up the good work. I was playing madden the other day and saw tenard jackson was a free agent do you think thats really gonna happen after lock out ends?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:53 PM)

Nothing can happen with Jackson for quite some time. He's not even allowed to apply for reinstatement until Sept. 23. Believe that's correct date. If it's not, it's somewhere very close to that. No guarantee league will act on reinstatement right away.

Max (Fayetteville NC)

How much cash will it take to keep Charles Johnson. I think JR will pay whatever it takes but just wondering how much that will be. 7 years for 70 million with 50 guaranteed will that get it done?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:54 PM)

I think they'll find a way to keep Johnson. But I think he might be wise to at least flirt with the Falcons a little bit and drive up his price tag.

sidney rice (New Orleans, L70056A)

Am I in a panthers uniform if smith is traded,I beleive big cat is going to open up his wallet, despite what critics say.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:55 PM)

Wouldn't rule it out totally. But Panthers do want to get their young WRs on the field and have high hopes for them.

Gur (Edgware, UK)

Since Freeman's minicamp conflicts with the NFLPA's rookie symposium, which do you think is more important for Bucs' rookies to attend?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:58 PM)

Pretty sure agents will advise them to go to the symposium. Agents don't really want them in workouts before they've signed contracts because they're worried about injury. Also, the schedule is such that they theoretically could do the symposium and still attend last day of workouts because symposium is only two days and workouts are three.

Mookie (Snellville, Ga )

Hey Pat, does Adrian Arrington make Lance Moore indespensible ? Arrington looked real good his first couple of pre season games and the game he was activated for last year he did a real good job.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:59 PM)

Still think they'd like to keep Lance. Brees is a big fan of Lance's and we all know Brees carries a lot of weight in New Orleans.

CB (Charleston, sc)

Afternoon Pat, with the expected signing of Ray Edwards by the Falcons, will Abraham's numbers see a significant drop?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:01 PM)

Don't think they'd be bringing him in to replace Abe, at least not in the short term. Think they'd play Edwards or whatever pass-rusher they get along with Abe. Having strong pass-rusher to go along with him could actually help Abe's numbers.

Jeff (Charlotte nc)

Pat I think Charles Johnson.wants to be a panthers there is no way he sign with anther team

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:02 PM)

I suspect that, too. But I'm pretty sure his agent would at least like to give the impression that he's open to moving. That can only help him get a bigger contract.

Tim (Camarillo Ca)

Hey Pat, I think Jimmy Grahm is the next pro bowl TE in the NFL. What are your thoughts on him and his chances to really have a big year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:03 PM)

Obviously, Saints are really high on Graham. That's why they were able to let Shockey grow. I think Graham developed way faster last year than they ever expected. Moving forward, I think Sean Payton will find even more ways to get him involved and he could be a star.

Luke T (Charlotte)

If the Panthers keep, Williams, Smith, and Newton is a breakout rookie, what are the chances that they will make the playoffs next year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:04 PM)

Could happen. Falcons went to playoffs in Ryan's first year. Bucs went 10-6 in Freeman's first year as starter. It's all up to Cam.

Armanti Edwards (Wish I was still in Boone)

Hey Pat,Will I finally get to see the field this year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:05 PM)

You're going to get your shot. Show some good things in camp and the preseason and you can earn some playing time.

steve t (sunny tampa, fl)

pat which potential free agent on the bucs do you think is most important to the Bucs..Ruude,jospeh,black,caddy?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:06 PM)

Probably Davin Joseph and Quincy Black. What part of Tampa are you in? Where I'm at, it's not so sunny. I'm hearing thunder and rain outside.

Amit (Mississippi)

Which Saints RB will lead the team in carries, and which will lead the team in yards?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:06 PM)

I'm going with Ingram in both categories.

Luke T (Charlotte)

Will the addition of Jeremy Shockey have any real effect on the Panthers' offense?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:08 PM)

Personally, I think Shockey might be at the end of the road. But Panthers believe he's got something left and he has history with Chudzinski. They want to make the TE a bigger part of the passing game than it's been since the Wesley Walls days. We'll see what Shockey has left.

Michael (SC)

Do you think the Falcons will get any others FA besides Edwards on defense?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:09 PM)

Lot of people are speculating about a CB. It could happen. But I don't see it as that big a need. Think their starters are fine and let Owens and Franks compete for nickel and see who steps up.

Mookie (Snellville, Ga)

Any chance they end the lockout while the negotiations are still going on since they're headed in the right direction ?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:11 PM)

No, think they have to at least get an agreement in principle first and they might not even be able to legally open things up until the agreement is signed and sealed. Suspect you'll see them open league year sometime around July 15, assuming things keep going the way we're hearing.

casona (Houston)

Hi Pat, I'm scared Shaun Rogers is going to show up fat and outta shape. It doesn't sound like he has made any effort at all to show his team mates he is going to be ready when the time comes.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:13 PM)

I had someone close to Rogers tell me a while back that he's been rehabbing an injury on his own and has done a nice job of keeping himself in shape. Yeah, might have been nice for him to bond with his teammates. But linemen really don't do much in those workouts. More important that he gets himself fully healthy.

Sharell (NCFalconFan)

What's up PY...It's been a loonnnnnngggggggg time. With the addition of Julio Jones and hopefully a key defensive player, who will be Falcons get rid of this offseason, Norwood, Jenkins, Jamaal Anderson or even little Harry Douglass, who I know is coming back from injury but was disappointing last year.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:15 PM)

Sharell!!! Where you been? I think Norwood's definitely gone and Anderson could follow. Also, wouldn't be surprised if they at least see what they can get for Jenkins in a trade. He might have some decent value.

james (NYC)

If you could make one (realistic) FA signing for the panthers who would you sign.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:16 PM)

Jake Delhomme. Seriously. If he's cut by Cleveland, as everyone expects, I'd bring him back as a mentor for Cam Newton and Jimmy Clausen.

Ken (Raleigh 919)

Which vet QB is a better mentor fit for what the Panthers are doing this year, in your opinion? McNabb, Delhomme, Bulger, Moore or someone else?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:17 PM)

Well, I just said Delhomme. But I'd put Bulger No. 2 on that list.

Matt (IL)

With the expected cap floor and the Bucs having so much cap room, do you think there is a good chance they keep Joseph and Ruud just to get them closer to that floor? Plus do they really wanna try a new MLB with little to no training camp?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:18 PM)

I think they keep Joseph. But Ruud is a real question mark. Even if they want to keep him, I think there's at least a chance he might want to leave. I don't think he's been thrilled that he's been asking for a new contract for a long time and hasn't gotten one.

rickey (charlotte)

Do you think that the panthers will go after Jonathan Joseph? I think him and Gamble could make a underrated tandem in the secondary for the panthers.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:19 PM)

Think it's possible. They've got to do something at CB.

Scott Hammond (Saint Amant, La.)

Any word on whether the franchise and transition tags will be part of the new CBA?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:20 PM)

Believe so. At least I'm pretty sure on the franchise tags.

steve t (sunny tampa, fl)

live near clearwater..bit of cloud coverage, but im still out on my deck enjoying the chat...what is the date again for the london gm to be moved back to Tampa?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:21 PM)

I'm over in New Tampa. Sounds like thunder has stopped for the moment and I'm not hearing any rain right now. But it's Florida, so that can change at any time. The CBA has to be done by Aug. 1 for the game to be held in London.

Ryan lee (Charlotte nc)

Peat We would welcome Delhomme back in Carolina .As long as he does not throw 5 Int in a game.If does that then we don't him back

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:22 PM)

You don't really want him to have to play. You just want him as a mentor for the kids.

Jake (ATL)

Do you think the Falcons could land a big time corner such as Asomugha?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:23 PM)

There's been some speculation about that. It wouldn't stun me because they're obviously willing to do whatever it takes to win. But I just don't see CB as a huge need and they just paid a pile of money to Dunta Robinson.

Harry (Wilkes-Barre, Pa)

Call me crazy but I have a feeling Matt Ryan will be looking for Julio Jones a little more than Roddy White towards the end of the year. Jones is a beast and is going to be unstoppable

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:24 PM)

You might be right. Sounds like Ryan and Jones are hitting it off pretty well. Give my regards to the Wyoming Valley! I grew up just up the road from there.

Greg (Stone Mountain)

Ive heard you mention a few times that Michael Jenkins could be trade bait here in the not so distant future. I dont know how I feel about Harry Douglas being the No. 3 wide reciever

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:26 PM)

I think if they could use him exclusively as a slot guy, he might be all right. I also think you're going to see Kerry Meier get some playing time. They really like him.

realheavyd (Clinton, TN)

Will you answer some Saints questions please?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:26 PM)

Send me some Saints questions. They come in very fast, so I don't see them all. In fact, you might want to post it a few times to increase the chances of me seeing it.

Tim (Athens)

Pat, have you seen a change in the number of questions you receive from us? Curious if the lower amount of player news has affected fan interest in the offseason.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:28 PM)

Surprisingly, no. Chats have been about the same as usual this time of year. That's a tribute to all of you and thanks for that. Hopefully, we won't have to be talking about the lockout much longer and we'll have real football in about a month.

Brian (Baton Rouge)

What kind of market do you see for Darren Sharper? I'm pretty sure the Saints will make him a low offer, but it can't be much considering the number of UFAs they have.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:29 PM)

Suspect there are a few teams he still could start for. I honestly don't see him staying in New Orleans.

realheavyd (Clinton, TN)

Aside from resigning some key contributors of their own to keep them from getting away in FA, do you see the Saints making any major strides in FA outside of that? Who do you see them targeting?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:31 PM)

Saints have been an aggressive team in the Payton/Loomis era and I don't expect them to just sit still. They don't have a lot of glaring needs. But I could see them signing an OLB. Or, if Roman Harper leaves, I could see them going after a strong safety.

Martin (Aberdeen)

Why does Malcolm Jenkins get so much more love than William Moore when Moore had more INTs and tackles in less games. The rest of their stats are pretty much the same.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:31 PM)

I like Moore. But I think Jenkins is a better player.

Tom (Ocean, NJ)

I'm not sure if theres an award for best gm in football like there is in hockey, but do believe that Mark Dominik makes a strong case for one of the best gms?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:32 PM)

Well, last year showed he's got Bucs on right path. Need to keep moving forward and he'll get his recognition.

Dan (Panthertown)

Hey Pat, if the lockout ends somewhere around July 15 like everyone said, and training camp starts around July 31 as usually, How likely is it that Cam Newton gets to Spartanburg on time?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:34 PM)

I suspect they'll make it a priority to make sure he gets signed in time to be there for the start of camp. He already missed a lot of stuff because of the lockout. They need him on the field the first day of camp.

Mike (washington, dc)

Hi Pat, do you have any info on the lockout talks? any new developments? How have Rich McKay or Arthur Blanc figured into the negotiations - I haven't heard much about them

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:35 PM)

I'm sure Blank is being kept up on the talks. But he's not one of the main guys in negotiating this deal. Only owner from NFC South that's heavily involved in the negotiations is Carolina's Jerry Richardson.

realheavyd (Clinton, TN)

Do you see both Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas back with the Saints this year, or does one have to go, and who?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:36 PM)

I think one will go. I was thinking they'd trade Pierre. But, now, I'm kind of leaning toward them just letting Reggie go.

Ron (High Point)

Last year Sam Bradford get a 6 yr, $50 mil + deal. With the new CBA, do you have a feel for how much less Cam will have to take?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:38 PM)

It's definitely going to be less in guaranteed money. But we've got to wait to see exactly how they structure the rookie scale to see how much less.

Zach (Atlanta)

@Ron - The rumor is 3-4 years, 15-20m at most overall. That is more than fair for an unproven talent.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:40 PM)

I've heard some stuff along those lines.

Luke T (Charlotte)

Who will be the MLB for the panthers next year, will Jon Beason move back or will it be Dan Conner, if so where will Thomas Davis be?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:41 PM)

Remains to be seen. Much depends on Davis' health and if he re-signs with Panthers. In a perfect world, Davis is healthy, you re-sign Anderson and put Beason back in the middle.

Nick (New Hampshire)

I read you article about how the Bucs are way below the salary cap, who do you think they will try to sign once free agency starts? Do you think that they will try to get Plax?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:42 PM)

Plax? Think about it -- he's a 33-year-old WR. Bucs have bunch of good young WRs. They're in a youth movement. Plax just doesn't fit with what they're doing.

realheavyd (Clinton, TN)

Do you see Scott Shanle staying in NOLA or going somewhere else for more money in FA?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:43 PM)

Not sure there's going to be big money out there for him and I think he wants to stay in NOLA.

Brian Gagnon (Durham, CT)

Hey pat, what do you think the chances are of rookies cameron jordan and Martez Wilson being in the starting lineup week 1 (assuming it gets played)? And has Patrick Robinson improved or is he looking like a bust, thus giving way for Johnny Patrick to step in at Nickel?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:46 PM)

Think you'll see Jordan start right away. Not so sure on Wilson. I like him, but it might be a little much to expect a third-round pick to start right away. On Robinson, I think they still have high hopes. Remember, Malcolm Jenkins didn't do much his first year.

Jake (ATL)

Pat, the Saints/Falcons rivalry in my eyes is one of the best in the league, but doesnt seem to get much respect even though its always a dog fight. What do you think? ANSWER THIS QUESTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:47 PM)

Think it gets plenty of respect in these parts and it should stay as fierce rivalry for the forseeable future.

Ron (High Point)

Jake Delhomme's name is being thrown around a lot as mentor to Newton/Clausen. I don't think he'll sign for backup money...UNLESS the Saints were interested and he could go "home". Think there's any possibility? How much do the Saints like Chase Daniel?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:49 PM)

Not sure Jake's going to get starter money anywhere. Saints have some time invested in Chase Daniel and seem to like him.

CP (Brooklyn, NY)

Has Jenkins been showing up to Falcons workouts? Just wondering how he is taking the Julio Jones drafting.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:50 PM)

Honestly, I'm not sure if he's been around or not. Any Atlanta fans seen anything on if Jenkins has been showing up?

Mike (washington, dc)

I'm confused by your repeated appeals to the Bucs' youth movement as a reason that they won't be interested in older veterans. Doesn't a team want some veterans to provide some leadership and experience?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:51 PM)

They've got Ronde Barber. They've also got some good young leaders, mainly Josh Freeman.

Josh (Chattanooga, TN)

@Jake I think the reason it doesn't get as much national attention as you would like is because the best rivalries are either old, traditional rivalries (AFC north) or between teams that have been relevant for much longer. The Falcons have never won anything and the Saints are just years removed from their first superbowl win ever. Tough, to get the nation interested in teams like that, no matter how good the games are.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:52 PM)

Valid points, but I think it currently is one of the most intense rivalries. The two teams really don't like each other. All right, couple more questions. I've got to cut out a couple minutes early, which is why I started early.

brandon (new orleans)

Which nfc south team do you think has the best chance at contending for the SUPERBOWL this year

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:53 PM)

Let me see what happens in free agency before I go making any predictions.

Nathan (NC)

@Josh, re Jake - perhaps, but those Bucs/Panthers games of the 2000's got some serious national attention.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:54 PM)

They did. Those were fun times.

Vinnie (ATL)

My concern with the Falcons is it is a possibility some of their linemen will be UFA instead of RFA. Will these guys resign?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:55 PM)

Not all of them. They'll probably keep one or two. But they've been preparing for this by drafting Hawley and Johnson last year and Reynolds the year before that.

Sharell (NCFalconFan)

Jenkins has shown up with the workouts organized by Ryan (who I absolutley love). Roddy WHite has shown up for 2 workouts. If you check ajc.com, Lebdetter just posted a 10 Things We Learned about Player Workouts column.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:56 PM)

Thanks for the update, Sharell. I knew you'd come through. All right. I've got to run. Thanks to all for stopping by. Not sure if we'll be chatting next Friday due to the holiday weekend. Let me check with folks in Bristol and I'll let you know on the blog.
