Love the Friday chat slot. Back to Wednesdays next week, but glad to be able to make up the MMA Live chat today. Your mics are hot...
Do u see urijah fabers career coming to a halt with a loss in ufc 132?
Absolutely unequivocally no. I am leaning towards the champion Dominick Cruz in the rematch, but Faber has plenty of fight(s) left.
What are chances Tito beats Bader
I think he has a good chance to stay competitive in the fight, as he has done against superior competition in most of his recent bouts. But beating Bader? I'd be very surprised. Wrong time to draw Bader off of his first loss.
Dr. Anik, lots of close fights Sunday...who you got?
Main event is a brutal one to pick. Marquardt can do it all, but how do you pick against Rick Story right now. You don't. So I'll take the underdog, Story, by split decision. Like Matt Mitrione to ruin Christian Morecraft. Also will take Pat Barry (another dog), John Howard and Tyson Griffin. And Javy Vazquez, of course.
Will I be able to watch the Facebook fights this weekend from my iPhone?
I know the prelims are viewable on Facebook. But if you don't have an iPhone, you don't have an iPhone. I don't have an iPhone.
Is Matt Brown-John Howard a "Loser is cut" match?
I think Matt Brown could be shown the door is he gets finished, but I don't believe Howard is in any great danger of a pink slip. His recent losses have been to top competition. Brown's haven't been.
Agree or Disagree with Guillards comments that the UFC need to make a LW GP? Are there too many wheels in motion to make it happen?
Disagree. Too many variables and obstacles. It'll be interesting to see when the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix finally wraps after a Feb. 2011 start.
what do you think of the state of Japans MMA?
Not real healthy, unfortunately. I think MMA will always have some place on the landscape in Japan, but there are myriad issues right now, from what I read.
Let go I've been chompin at the bit since Wednesday
Champin' with an 'a' kid. Let's go.
Which prelim fight are you guys most excited for , in the next upcoming fight cards , mine are sotiropoulos vs dos anos , benavidez vs wineland, mendes vs yaha, and thiago tavares vs spencer fisher
A lot of nice matchups involving the little guys. Just focused on this weekend for now.
just a heads up the auto update isnt working again
Whats up brother? Sounds like Marquardt's cut is going as planned. Shocked?
Hahahaha. I'm far less concerned for his cut than I was for other recent ones.
CHOST .... Will Eddie Alvarez still be consider a top lw if he stays with bellator?
As long as he keeps winning, he'll certainly have a place near the top for me. I was more impressed than most with his last win over Pat Curran and expect he'll continue to dominate under the Bellator banner. He'll have a hard time going down as an all-time great lightweight without fighting in the UFC.
What do you think of Jorge Gamebred Masvidal. I am huge fan. He is actually one of few MMA fighters who uses defense properly in MMA. What do you think?
Have always been a fan. Called a pair of his Bellator fights in 2009. When he is focused and invested, he is a scary fighter. He is clearly in a motivated state and he's on a big stage now and taking advantage. I'm not sure he can get past this current version of Gilbert Melendez, but he has made it a fight I want to see.
Buzzmaster has been informed of technical issues. Please update me when y'all are good. Thanks.
Do you think it is weird that GSP told Nate to drop to his weight class, a couple wins for Nate and the may have to fight, any thoughts?
I think it's pretty simple. St-Pierre is a genuine dude and thought the move would stand to benefit Marquardt. Don't think GSP much considered the possibility that they could fight one day.
Do you think Rampage will be the guy to seriously test Bones Jones and do you think he can actually hand Bones his first true loss?
No and no. Love you, Rampage.
Who do you have in the morecraft vs mitrione fight, i feel too many people are underestimating morecraft , i got morecraft via TKO gnp in rd 3
I will take your action. Mitrione has improved quite a bit with each fight and is in a good way right now. Perhaps I'm not giving Morecraft a fair shake, but my pick is more based upon Mitrione's progress and athleticism than his opponent.
Don't you think the UFC should treat STrikeforce like their "minor leagues", and instead of firing the fighters essentially option them to Strikeforce? Cro Cop, Tito if he loses would all be good additions.
Perhaps that is being considered as a temporary move for certain individuals. But I do believe the Strikeforce brand will eventually be folded as we know it. The UFC brand is so strong and the company has worked so hard to build it up. Why would you bother promoting a separate brand? Just doesn't seem to make sense.
True or False UFC desolves SF before Showtime contract is up?
No idea, Jimmy.
In retrospect last weekends Strikeforce card should be called Strikeforce Reminder. I was reminded that Strikeforce has a GP going on, I was reminded the real reason Werdum was cut from UFC, I was reminded how Josh B wins fights, and I was reminded why Masvidal is a big name fighter (when he fights at 155).
I am with you on Werdum. Also get where you are coming from in terms of the delayed grand prix. Fedor goes down in Februrary and SF was unable to piggyback on that momentum as it was supposed to in April. Barnett is definitely a tough out and knows how to win. I could do without the post-fight stuff.
Jon, given 5 secs, how many fighters can you name who do not have tats?
Rashad Evans. And that might be wrong. That's all I can think of. Does Mitrione have ink?
who do you give bader with a win? Bonnar? Do you buck the trend and give him the loser of Shogun/Griffin?
Some interesting possibilities for Bader, provided he gets through Tito Ortiz. I'd like to see him fight the Shogun/Griffin loser or winner. As for Bonnar, he joins us on MMA Live tonite on ESPN2. You don't want to miss his thoughts on a next opponent. Dude is fired up.
Chost im changing occupations and this will prob be my last chat for a while... any new exciting info that you have for us?
Sorry to hear that, Frank. Feel free to stay in touch on Twitter. You can find me @Jon_Anik. And the show is @ESPN_MMALIVE.
Is there some tension between other chats and yours? Following a few of them, and it seems that way. Much love for all of them though :)
Not that I know of. I know Dan Rafael and I go back and forth sometimes, but we're cool. Had him on my Boston radio show dozens of times. Not to worry, we're back to Wednesdays next week.
So Bonnar is goin to rant about Koscheck and he'll say he could make 185 for that fight, right?
I don't believe he can make 185, but he sounds all sorts of motivated.
True or False: Bismack Biyombo is the greatest name ever for an athlete?
False. But I like the alliteration. And I love the pick for the Bobcats.
wuts up big Jon, wuts on the dinner menu tonight and u better be pulling for Faber its time for a big win for him
Good question. I'm being forced to eat in tonite, which is frustrating for a fat kid at heart. I'd like to see Faber experience a UFC championship. Think it'll be very tough, though.
Hey Jon, if Fedor does his thing against Hendo, how much of a chance is there that he fights the winner of the SF tourny?
I like the forward thinking, but Fedor really just needs to win and there will be plenty of intriguing fights. I do believe there is still some sort of appetite for a Fedor-Overeem fight, but he's gotta beat Dan Henderson for that to be considered.
How soon til flyweight goes active in the UFC? Fall? 2012?
Really not certain. Got some homework to do. I was cool with 7 divisions.
Didn't Bonnar pull out of his fight due to injury?
Yes. It was a knee. Plenty more on MMA Live tonite on ESPN2.
I am hating how my DVR cuts off so much of your show. Any chance you could get that fixed for me?
My lone suggestion remains the same: Extend the DVR window an extra 30 or 60 minutes, if your wife is good with it. We are always subject to delay because of live sporting events. Friday Night Fights could and often does go long. Not ideal, I know! But we appreciate it...
I'll be at the Traveler's Champ on Friday, so getting this in now...YEAH BRUINS, STANLEY CUP CHAMPS, WOOO !!!
Wanted to go back and pluck that one for Marc. Share your enthusiasm.
After watching the Overeem Werdum fight which many thought will determine the best heavyweight in the tourney, do you think they are anywhere near the level of Cain or JDS anymore?
Not gonna make any sweeping statements after one fight, but it wasn't nearly as dominating as many thought it would be for Overeem. Part of that was Werdum's insistence on trying to will Overeem to the mat. Overeem is fortunate to be moving on and I expect him to be better against Antonio Silva. Some interesting thoughts from Kenny Florian tonite on who is now the favorite in the tourney.
Do you agree with Joe Rogan that there is an issue with writers being disrespectful when discussing fighters that are on the losing end or don't live up to expectations even with a win? (Overeem on Sat.)
In this instance, absolutely. You can't always get the finish and you can't always win as impressively as you would like to. It's amazing how many fighters themselves are disappointed when they win and end up outwardly criticizing their own performances. But media people are often probed for their opinions and many have strong ones.
Chost!!! Long time follower, first time poster. Just wanted to say thanks for giving me my weekly work distraction! Keep it up!!
Pleasure. Appreciate you posting.
You sir were the first person I followed on, so props... Does Schaub deserve a title shot if he beats Big Nog?
Not in my opinion, no. Just not sure wins over fading fighters, legends they may be, would be enough for me. But it's not my call...and I do fancy him a future contender. A handful of my colleagues don't see him that way.
I am doing this chat with my boss five feet over my shoulder. Gangster?
Is she attractive?
Does Tito get another UFC fight if he loses?
I don't know. Depends how he loses, I suppose. The UFC seemingly would like him to retire, but he does remain a draw. He got a lot of the credit for Seattle show being banged out, even though he didn't end up fighting.
Jon..Story IS betting fav vs Nate. Just an FYI.
Very interesting. Makes me kinda like Marquardt!
Chost, have you started watching the Gracie Breakdowns on Youtube? If not you must!
Will check out. Thanks.
Chael Sonnen Fights in the UFC in 2012 True or False?
True. Trying to be optimistic for the guy. 2013 = very far away.
Being that it was Florian's first attempt at a new weight class, and a sub par performance. Do you think that it was good enough to earn a title shot, or does he need a fight or two more?
I wouldn't quantify the performance as subpar. It certainly wasn't perfect, but he beat a 1-loss fighter and decisively over the last 2 rounds. I think Chad Mendes is most worthy of a title shot, followed by K-Flo. Mendes has a fight in August so, if Jose Aldo is ready, make the Aldo-Florian fight.
Does Josh Gross work for ESPN?
Yes. ESPN.com. He'll be on MMA Live tonite.
Any info on what fights are scheduled for UFC 136 I'm dying to know
I think you'll get a title fight in Houston. Not at liberty to say much more.
From Bodog: Story (-130) Marquardt (EVEN)
Are we graced with K-flo tonight? Who else is on the live?
Just me and Florian in Bristol. We'll be joined by Stephan Bonnar from Las Vegas. Also ESPN.com MMA heads Gross and Brett Okamoto. And Gareth A. Davies on extended version for ESPNUK and ESPN.com. Was a busy morning.
Schaub = Overrated. He was getting beat by the can formerly known as Cro Cop, when he got a lucky KO. Big Nog via 1st rd submission.
For the close fights at UFC on Versus 4- I got Roberts over Attonito, Lamas over Grice, Oliveira over Lentz, Gamburyan over Griffin (upset of the night), Story over Marquardt, also Barry over Kongo, who you got???
That is thorough, Sonny. I like Roberts as well. Gave picks earlier in the chat. Waffling on the main event. I do like Pat Barry.
Why should I go to UFC 133. The main event doesn't seem enticing to me. The other fights all seem great though. Are all the other fights worth watching 25 minutes of Rashad lay on Phil?
Vince, you know anything can and does happen in MMA. Rashad Evans is one of the best P4P fighters in the world. Gotta have some appreciation for what he's done, even if some past fights haven't overwhelmed you. And hopefully he'll get the stand-up going, b/c Phil Davis can match the wrestling. I think you should go, kid.
If Rampage beats Bones would that be considered an upset? I mean look at their fight history.
A huge upset. Jon Jones is a huge favorite and it's based upon what he has done lately. He just slays dudes. Doesn't have much to do with Jackson's past achievements. If he beats Jon Jones, it could trump any previous accomplishment.
yes james, that would b an upset!
What do u think bout a bones vs spider fight at 205?
If I'm Anderson Silva, I am in no rush to pursue that fight. That doesn't mean he can't win it.
Has Bones Jones vs The Dragon been scheduled yet?
He's fighting Rampage Jackson in his first title defense. It'll be UFC 135, September 24th in Denver.
Jon, R. STORY had a surprisingly good strategy ( and chin ) for Alves. Do you think he will have as effective a strategy for Nate?
As stated previously, how do you pick against Rick Story right now. I have some concern that his wind could abandon him in the final round, if it goes the distance. Marquardt can push the pace and is as well-rounded as it gets. Really cool main event we have, despite the injury to Anthony Johnson.
Jonny Boy!!! Not to be a hater but im not remotely impressed by anything about Story other than his chin. I have Nate outclassing him this weekend
He's strong as hell and a damn capable wrestler. Takedown defense is superb. Your forecast wouldn't stun me, but Story is non-fiction.
Is it just me or is this summer not as exciting as summer's past for MMA events. I feel there is a lack of big time events so far
Well, there haven't been any UFC titles on the line recently (I believe dating to GSP in April). That changes next weekend at UFC 132 with Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber.
I think there's been good events on paper...they just havent lived up to the expectations/hype
Jon, I usually damp cloth my '69 Vette on Fridays at noon, so I hope you know how highly I think of your chat..
I think Story is young and reckless, that is going to win him the fight.
That's not a bad point. I might add fearless in there as well.
Jon, are you hoping Fedor keeps motivated for potential huge fights against top guys, or do you believe he should retire soon?
Informed speculation says the motivation has already begun to dissipate. I think he'll entertain retirement if he loses to Hendo. I'd love to see him get a win or two before he exits. But something tells me Hendo isn't gonna have it.
I read James Toney and Ken Shamrock are set up for an MMA fight. How far has Ken fallen now?
I like the name Sven.
Its not a #1 contender or title fight, Nate by Submission! Put me on the books Chost!
Best thing about Story is he likes to fight often, refreshing change from these other guys fighting twice a yr
It is admirable on a number of levels. Mixed martial artist and warrior in every sense.
Do u agree with overeem that the winner of th gp should get ufc title shot?
If Strikeforce is to be merged into the UFC at that point, sure. But I don't think unifying/aligning the titles is remotely a priority for Zuffa.
"I like the name Sven" is the best response EVER! You rock, Jon.
I guess I'm the only one taking in the SF Challengers Card tonight?
I'll set the DVR. We've also got a Bellator Summer Series show tomorrow night, I believe, before the UFC on Sunday.
True or False: Faber vs. Cruz is the biggest MMA fight in history below 155?
I'm not sure about all that. You could be right, but I don't profess to be the foremost MMA historian. Aldo-Faber almost felt bigger, as the WEC's first and only PPV.
Tho considering you didn't answer the other Sven's question, the name does rock.
I had a camp counselor named Sven Smythe. 6'5".
Jon, it looked to me like Overeem would be easy for Cain V. to take down and gnp.
Any given Sunday. The Reem just looked kinda flat. He'll be fine and I'll probably pick him to beat Big Foot.
Overeem is sooooo overrated!Honestly if I was Dana and he wanted to fit in the UFC I would give him Schaub or Mir before I would give him one of the top 2
It could play out that way, provided Overeem doesn't (in theory) enter the UFC as the Strikeforce champion.
and Frank would hurt him....you know Mir is my boy!
Mitrione- Mir if Mitrione wins? He'd be 4-0 in UFC
I'm not sure the UFC will move that quickly with Mitrione. But he is definitely entering the mix/top 10 amongst UFC heavyweights.
I think Schaub should get Mir Before a Title Shot!
I agree with that.
Boiler UP! How do you like Johnson & Moore coming in together?
Absolutely love the Boston Celtics drafting 2 Purdue Boilermakers last night. Hope Jon Fitch is paying attention.
What/who's next for Mir? Feel like he's exhausted a lot of options besides top couple guys
I'd like to see him fight Brendan Schaub, if Schaub gets through Nogueira in August.
Jon, agreed on Overeem over Big Foot, Silva will take some power shots and get the beat down. But Overeem can't handle Velasquez' speed and power...
Fair enough. As of today, there isn't a heavyweight in the world whom I'd pick to beat Cain Velasquez.
Friday chat today... were you still too hung over from the Cup to do it Wednesday?
Was on a lil golf vacation. Also wanted to make sure I made up the chat. Back to Wednesday next week. And the Bruins celebration continues. The Stanley Cup has got to be the hardest pro sports championship to win. 25 playoff games and they're all a brutal grind.
Would have loved to see the Celtics grab Kenneth Faried last night but I'll settle for Johnson.
I was right there with ya, hoping Faried would drop. Didn't happen. Love rebounds.
I forget the Russian's name left in the SF HW tourny, but I pick him.
Kharitonov. Definitely a darkhorse and a worthwhile selection.
Mitrione would move to 5-0 with a win. Marcus Jones, Kimbo, Beltran, Hague, Morecraft. Never thought he would last this long.
what's the easiest?
I'd say the Super Bowl. Sounds disrespectful, but oftentimes as a SB champion you only have to win 2 home playoff games to get there. It's obviously a physical toll for 6 months, but the playoff process is night and day. War B's.
I agree Jon. I'd say Mir against the winner of Nog and Shaub, and Nelson against the loser
not a big basketball person but it feels like the Cavs bombed out last night
I would've taken Derrick Williams and Brandon Knight. I like what the Wizards did.
Sup Chost. Have you seen Lorenz Larkin yet? Awesome striker at 205 with good takedown defense. He's the one to watch on Shotime tonight.
Appreciate it, Brett. Will keep an eye on LL.
How overrated is Brett Rogers..... I think he is the main reason that Overeem is considered so good.... but after watching Barnett destroy Rogers as well it makes me think a lot less of the win by Overeem
I do believe that Rogers is overrated, but don't agree that the Overeem opinions have much of anything to do with that fight. Overeem is lauded for all of his MMA finishes and his K-1 accomplishments.
So has Dos Santos done anything to change your mind on Velasquez?
He's a very worthy challenger and could easily leave Cali with the belt. Just not gonna be my prediction, that's all.
Rogers looked good for a time against Fedor. What does that say about some peoples greatest MMA fighter of all time.
The Fedor conversation will always be an interesting one, albeit a long one. Not sure he can still go down as the greatest of all time after what we've seen recently. And I definitely believe I was fooled a bit on Rogers when he had those moments against Emelianenko.
Pat Barry vs. the Reem is a fight that has to happen at some point in the future.
Huge size disadvantage for Barry. But kicks will be flying.
Tito in July vs bader. Is this his last
Could be. He's writing a 3-part blog for ESPN.com leading up to the fight. Pretty interesting stuff. On the MMA page today.
Is there any new info out there about how long Lesnar will be out ... if he ever comes back at all?
Nothing new. I have my doubts that we'll ever see him again.
Do you think Cain is going to consistently get the same treatment as GSP in terms of fighting on "home field" to try and draw in the Latino market?
I think there is a strong initiative there, to promote Velasquez, but I don't think it's much of a home-cage advantage on fight night.
What are your thoughts on Enes Kanter and his love of pro wrestling?
Always cool to hear about other professional athletes and their sport interests. Was nice to hear about all of the Boston Bruins who are diehard MMA fans. Man did Florian come through with some stories. Zdeno Chara is all about it.
JA, are you storing up on your sleep? August is coming up fast!!
On that note, I'm going to sleep. Appreciate you all checking in on a Friday. Any other questions can be sent my way on Twitter- it's @Jon_Anik. We've got some good stuff for you tonite on MMA Live on ESPN2 w/ K-Flo, Bonnar and more. Chat is back to Wednesday next week. Until then, be well. -JA
