Chat with Bill Williamson

Bill Williamson
  (2:02 PM)

Hi, everyone let's get rolling.

Bill (Corona CA)

Is it me or are the Broncos gonna be money this year????

Bill Williamson
  (2:02 PM)

Might be just you.

Drew (HI)

What do you think will happen with the lockout?

Bill Williamson
  (2:03 PM)

I think it will be done in two weeks. It seems like things are heading in the right direction and everyone knows the importance of starting camp on time to esnure good play in Week 1. So, I think we're going to be safe.

Mark (San Marcos, CA)

BW, Love the blog. Does the addition of Bob Sanders mean Weddle will likely walk? If so... would that be considered an upgraded secondary?

Bill Williamson
  (2:04 PM)

Thanks, Mark. The Chargers signed Sanders with the vision of playing him with Weddle. They wnant to keep Weddle. It may be costly, but they want him back.

Evan (Delaware)

How do you see Mike Tolbert fitting into the SD offense this year. With matthews, jackson, gates, and floyd will they still aim to get him 10+ touches a game? Or do you think matthews will become the workhorse in year 2?

Bill Williamson
  (2:07 PM)

I think they want Mathews to get most of the carries. But Tolbert has a big role. He can catch and he is good at the goal-line. Plus, with Mathews having durability issues, Tolbert is a vital piece to that offense.

Adam (Nashville)

Bill, the owners kept pushing for revenue for stadiums. The rumor was that this was not as much for future stadiums as to pay debt on existing one's. Now that the CBA is almost done, does that mean that Oakland and SD will not be in line for any consideration of upgrades?

Bill Williamson
  (2:08 PM)

It all depends on what the outcome of the CBA is. But once the monster of the lockout is resolved, I'm sure stadiums will be one of the next big issues the league addresses.

Nathan (DC)

If the Broncos trade Orton as everyone is predicting, do you think they are happy with Quinn as their #2, or will they pick up someone else?

Bill Williamson
  (2:09 PM)

In that case, I'd think Denver would look for a veteran to mentor Tebow and compete with Quinn to be the backup.

Nathan (DC)

When this lockout is lifted, the free agent frenzy is going to be ridiculous, and there are a lot of receivers out there. Does this help the Chargers keep Jackson? Also, do the Chargers really need Steve Smith?

Bill Williamson
  (2:11 PM)

Jackson was given the franchise tag and it is expected to be part of the CBA. We'll see on Smith.

Rick (GA)

Any ideas where McNabb might end up?

Bill Williamson
  (2:12 PM)

Minnesota? Tennessee?

Steve (Charlotte)

Hey BillWith Zach Miller going to be a free agent.. what are the chances he gets a big deal elsewhere and leaves Oakland? Does Al Pony up and lock him in long term?

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

I think Al will do everything it takes to keep Miller. Of course, that lessens the chances of Asomugha staying. There is only so much money. The Raiders knew Asomugha was going to be free, but they were hoping Miller wouldn't be. However, they have talked with Miller prior to the lockout and I think they will keep him. Davis loves tight ends and he know how dnageorus Miller is.

Eric (Virginia Beach, Va)

With the off season shortened, what do you think the chances are that the Broncos keep Orton around a few weeks to give Tebow time to get up to speed and then try to trade Kyle before the trade deadline.

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

That's an interesting thought. But starting quarterbacks usally aren't dealt during the season. A team wants their quarterback in their system all year.

Niklas (Denmark)

Any chance Al Davis will try to trade Tommy Kelly?

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

I wouldn't think so. Kelly had a really nice eyar in 2010. He's part of a solid d-line.

Austin (CA)

Are there any free agent wide receivers the chiefs will go after to be the third option? Or will they use someone who is already on the roster?

Richard (Greensboro, NC)

Does the Denver brass really have a win now mentality? It just seems so deluded to believe the Broncos will be competitive enough to believe that the difference in Orton's known and Tebow's unknown will really impact whether or not the Broncos get to the playoffs.

Bill Williamson
  (2:27 PM)

Fox's plan has always been to win now and that's hwo he feels doing into this new era. But the Broncos realize they are rebuilding and it could take time.

Bill Williamson
  (2:28 PM)

Folks, I'm having major tech. issues here. Sorry for the delay. But it's out of my control. I'm trying my best to ride the wave.

tyvon branch (oakland)

im a premier safety in the league why dont i get any love n the afc west?

Bill Williamson
  (2:29 PM)

This sia big year for you. Need to bounce back a tad.

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

Let's try this again. So sorry. But It's out of my control.

ricardo (kansas city) [via mobile]

Do you think this years draft will impact the chiefs like last years draft? Who will impact the most? Offence and defence.

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

If the Chiefs get out of this year's draft class what they did last year, then this team is going to be in fine shape. I really like this class. I do think we'll see guys like Baldwin, Hudson, Bailey and Houston all make their presence felt. This is a good, young club.

Wet and cold (midwestville)

Bill you hate the chiefs. You spend 3/4's of your time writing about the other 3 teams in the west. You only spend about 25 % of your time on the chiefs. Why do you hate us so much?

Bill Williamson

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

So, I hate a team because I give it 25 percent of the coverage in a four-team divison?

Ricardo (Mexico)

How many years do you think the Chargers window is open for? How many good years do you think guys like Gates and Jammer have left? Thanks

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

Window is open as long as Rivers is there.

Evan (Delaware)

What do you think SD will do regarding their LB corp heading into Free Agency after the CBA? Currently, they have 3 of their ILB's going into FA. Who do you think they will bring back and do you think there are any ILB's on the FA market that fit SD's scheme?

Bill Williamson
  (2:41 PM)

They will likley bring in an inside guy. I could also see them trying to keep Burnett or Siler.

Ronnie (L.A.)

The Broncos were a respectable D in 2009 until the end of the season... Without Doom last year they stunk.... with Doom, Miller, and a Defensive Coach, couldn't Denver's D make some noise?

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

They got to get better at tackle and all the youngsters nee dto be ready to roar right away.

Chris (Boulder, CO)

Chargers = LeBron James???Always choke when it's all on the line?

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

I'm going to take my talents to Pacific Beach?

Andrew (Valparaiso, IN)

Hey Bill, Love the blog i read it all the time. With the raiders drafting Taiwan Jones in the draft in the same round they picked Bush, is Bush now out the door

Bill Williamson
  (2:45 PM)

No, they are two different types of backs. Jones was not brought in to replace Bush. He was brought in to add speed.

Victor (Sacramento, CA)

Here's hoping the season starts on time!! That Broncos/Raiders MNF game should say a lot of both teams! Call it. Who comes out on top?

Bill Williamson
  (2:46 PM)

The favorite has to be the team that won by 45 on that field last year, right?

Robert (Mississippi)

Who do you think are the top 2 free agents the Broncos will go after once free agency starts?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

Mebane and D. Williams?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

Mebane and D. Williams?

Austin (CA)

Hey bill, I was wondering who will be the chiefs third option at wide receiver will be. Will they try free agency?Or go with chambers?

Bill Williamson
  (2:49 PM)

I could see it going for a vet in that spot. I could see the team moving asway from Chambers. He helpd in 2009 when he was signed after beng cut by the Chargers. But he didn't do a whole lot last year.

How much fun will FA be once the lockout is lifted?? Talk about a mile a minute, right?

Bill Williamson
  (2:51 PM)

It will likely the craziest 10-14 days of my career. For you, the fans, it is going to be so much fun. There is going to be major news like crazy. Franchses are going to change on the eve of training camp. It's going to be wild.

If Denver does decide to go after a veteran to mentor Tebow, who is available and who do u think will work best?

I could see Fox going after Delhomme if he's available.

Nathan (DC)

Chargers special teams in '11--still horrific, or somewhat respectable?

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

I could see Fox going after Delhomme if he's available.

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

Definitely improved if it cna stay healthy.

Chris (Hot Springs, Ar)

Hey Bill, I disagree with the guy from earlier...I think you have been showing a lot of love for the Chiefs. Thank you and keep it up. My question is about the wide receiver position. I expect good things from Baldwin but let's face it rookie wide receiver's don't have a history of short term success. What free agent could they target to compete for playing time?

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

Thanks, Chris, I aim to cover each team as much as possible. I think Baldwin is going to help right away because he is so big and he gives the Chiefs' offense a vertical threat. It will open up that offense.

Ron (Oakland)

Do you see the raiders going after a G in FA?

Bill Williamson
  (2:56 PM)

YeahI could see Oakland getting another vet to put in the mix somewhere on the line.

Ronnie (L.A.)

If d. williams is too expensive would denver have a shot at ronnie brown or the raiders' bush?

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

Yes and yes. I could see Denver going after either of those two guys. Denver wnants to get help at RB and I think it will be aggressive.

Bill Williamson

Evan (Delaware)

In your opinion will Vincent Jackson smooth things over with the SD front office and return or do you see SD pursuing other options such as Plexico?

Bill Williamson
  (2:58 PM)

Yes and yes. I could see Denver going after either of those two guys. Denver wnants to get help at RB and I think it will be aggressive.

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

I expect Jackson to be in SD this year and for him to play very well. He'll be free in 2012. If he plays well and stays out of trouble, perhaps the Chargers will want to give him a long-term deal. But for now, the focus is on him playing well in 2011.

Matt (Albuquerque)

Bill, do you think Orton will be traded? I still don't understand why people think that he gives Denver the best chance to win. Can you enlighten me as to why?

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

I think he's traded. I know there is talk he won't be. But it just makes sense Denver moves on now. It needs to find out if Tebow can play or not.

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

Hey folks. Thanks for hanging through all the tech. issues. I'm off next week. Talk to you soon.
