Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
 (2:58 PM)

Greetings people. Hope you're all enjoying your day and that the weekend feels in range.

Paul Kuharsky
 (2:58 PM)

Let's get to it.

xrayvsn (murfreesboro, tn)

I do not see why people expect the league or team should fine/punish Kenny Britt. Didn't most of his antics happen during a lockout? He is not getting paid by the NFL or technically have a job during the lockout, so why should he be subject to player conduct rules retroactively when lockout is over?

Paul Kuharsky
 (2:59 PM)

OK, how about following the law then? Because the league is locking players out, should he have rioted in Vancouver? Also, players are likely to agree in the new deal to retroactive player conduct penalties.

Nathan (DC)

Colts make a play for any free agents?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:01 PM)

One or two. Not giant names or contracts. But pieces.

Kevin (Knoxville)

Team cap numbers will be a mystery for a few more weeks, but let?s say at the start of free agency you are C/B Polian and realize your free agent spending money is limited. You figure you have enough money to sign either a quality RB (Addai or another FA) or a quality SS (Bullitt or another FA), but not both. Which position would you prioritize in free agency? How effective can the Colts really be if they are unable to sign a quality player at both positions?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:02 PM)

Well they went 10-6 largely without the safety last year, no? I like Melvin Bullitt a lot. But Joseph Addai is better at what he does if they are both healthy.

Sean (Houston)

Paul, read your article on CJ. Great Stuff as always. If/when the lockout is lifted I believe the titans will be terrible this year. What are the chances the titans trade CJ to a contender. I realize Rbs are not going to command a huge return but even a late first or early second sounds great for a team rebuilding and a player who probably won't last much longer than 4 more years. I love Locker but he is not ready to start and CJ's value is as high as its ever gonna be. A player such as Chris Johnson could put teams like the Jets, Packers, and Cowboys over the top.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:03 PM)

Here's the column, where you can also cast a vote: Should the Titans pay Johnson big money?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:04 PM)

I just don't see this trade-your-best-guy strategy. Especially with teams having to pay nearly 100 percent of the cap. Who will you then pay? You're not going to get from others what you believe him to be worth. It's not baseball where you trade away a guy for prospects. Minimally, they have two years of him. They need both and more.

Kevin (Knoxville)

Which AFC South team (if any) is most likely to be the big spender in free agency, whenever it begins? Is any team likely to have much more cap room than the other three?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:04 PM)

Not sure on room, but I think Jacksonville will make the biggest splash. Maybe three quality defenders.

Sean (Houston)

Hey paul, I always commentwhen you say something bad about the Texans, and I always have had a good valid poing for my side and people seem to agree with my side because they comment back at me after mine, but you seem to always ignore it. Do I stump you that much?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:06 PM)

Yes, you stump me. I am suppose to love the Texans and be rah-rah for some reason when they were horrible and constantly con people into saying "This is going to be the year." Why should I love the unloveable instead of being critical of the things that land a team with talent at 6-10?

George (San Diego)

Why do the Colts keep working on our offense? We need help on defense.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:07 PM)

They have an all-time great at quarterback. The obligation is to surround him with people that let him excel. Of course you want a better defense too. But their approach is hardly unreasonable.

tyler (jax)

Where do you personally rank Wayne Weaver among the other owners. I really think that he is one of the best owners. His commitment to the city and the community is so great. How much longer do you think he will remain the owner before he gets to old and sells the team. Also, do you think he sells the team to someone who is committed to keeping the jags in jax?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:08 PM)

He hired and stuck with Shack Harris for a long time. Great owners don't make bad hires in big positions, or when they do they get out from under them quickly. Is there a person who commits to keeping them in Jacksonville? Easy to say, hard to find, no?

Andrew (Franklin)

I like Ahmad Hall as the Titans fullback, but I see him more as a good team influence rather than a leader. Can a player a leader from the fullback position or is he only a lead blocker?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:08 PM)

He can lead. Being situational isn't the best platform. But I'd take him over almost anyone on offense for leadership in that locker room. Now can he or should he be the top guy? No.

Andrew (Franklin)

I saw somewhere that Matt Hasselbeck is the #1 QB iin this years free agency. Mike Munchak had some statements recently that seemed to bolster the possibility of Matt being a Titan. If we do get him, will we need Locker to start at all this year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:09 PM)

Odds of any quarterback not named Manning starting all 16 are relatively low. And Hasselbeck gets hurt.

DougE (Jungles of Altamonte Springs, FL)

Even if training camps start on time, will the lack of a "traditional" off season, affect how quickly the Colts put Castonzo and Ijalana in the starting line up?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:10 PM)

If they are better than the alternatives by the end of camp, and they will be, they will play.

Andrew (Houston)

Is there any way the Texans can ever win without getting some "nasty" on the team?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:10 PM)

I wrote about that this week. Teams need some jerks.

Teddy (CA)

Why are you so jolly?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:10 PM)

It's just my nature.

heath (oboro, ky)

Edu or Jones? What's up with benching Donovan?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:11 PM)

No idea on Donovan, but surely the story comes out. Jones is growing on me. But I wish there was a third option.

Marcelo Arantes (Volta Redonda - Brasil)

If, and it as big IF, the Titans pay Tulloch, who are the starters LBs, day 1?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:11 PM)

Witherspoon, Ayers and a MLB to be named, I think.

Ben (UK)

No mailbags recently, PK? I know there isn't much to talk about, but your input is still pertinent even on boring topics.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:12 PM)

Be back this week. If I am off on a Friday, then it doesn't arrive on Saturday.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:12 PM)

Send mail.

Dustin (Stanford CA)

Hey Paul, can you throw some names of free agents out that the Titans might chase once the lock out is lifted?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:13 PM)

Barrett Ruud? Paul Posluszny?

TwoToneBlueBlood (Murfreesboro)

One of my biggest pet peves with Fisher is that he was too conservative and often played not to lose instead of playing to win. Do you think Munchak will be a little more liberal with play calling and be more willing to go for it on 4th down?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:14 PM)

More sensibly aggressive, probably.

justin (Gwangju, South Korea)

What are the chances the Colts let Clint Sessions go and what are the chances of the Jags signing him?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:14 PM)

I think he'd be good with the Jags. I think Colts would like to keep him, but have other guys who rank ahead of him.

MARINEJLD (Earth)

Britt needs to move down to Brentwood and settle in for the rest of the year....Most of his infractions have been minor though they seem to be increasing in number this year. Why can't a vet grab him and drag him down to Brentwood??? sigh

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:15 PM)

Who's the vet that's up to the job? Titans don't have many leaders. Would he listen to Michael Roos, if Roos could find him?

JBR (Nashville)

Paul,What do you think the Titans Free Agency plans are? What positions are they most likely to try to address when it opens?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:16 PM)

Seems to me they have to have a LB. Maybe SS. CB depth. And they've said DT. Need to re-sign Ball or Babin, I think.

Myron Rolle (Nashville, TN)

Out of these 3 guys which one has the best chance to join me as a Rhodes Scholar? Vince Young, Pac Man, or Kenny Britt?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:16 PM)

None. But I believe Britt is the smartest of that bunch, which says quite a bit about the competition, doesn't it?

Mike (Slamtown)

I think the Titans should give Collins a shot to win, and if he can't, then go with Jake Locker. I know they want to plan for the future, but there are players on every team who may not have a future after this year, and they deserve at least a chance to win

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:17 PM)

They do? They deserve their paycheck based on a signed contract, the team deserves their top effort. That's all I see deserved.

mike (jax)

PK, im worried about Gabbert at QB. Is he as smart and athletic as everyone is making him out to be or does he just have Tom Brady'esk looks?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:18 PM)

Yes, most people rated him the top QB in the draft because of how he looks.

Albert (California)

Hey PK, a lot of people are optimistic about the Colts drafting 2 offensive linemen with their 1st two picks, however, i was wondering how much of an immediate impact do you expect them to make in their rookie year against guys like Mario Williams

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:19 PM)

Say Williams, chipped by Dallas Clark, beats Anthony Castonzo clean. Guess what happens? Peyton Manning throws a checkdown or throws it away and they go back to the line of scrimmage.

Hair Club for Men (Murfreesboro)

Are you still mad at us? As all we want to do is help.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:19 PM)

Don't need or want it.

Joey (San Antonio, TX)

Paul, I just read your post about Chris Johnson. Why do the Titans continue to insist on being a run-first team, when it's evident across the league that the most successful teams are the ones with great passing games? The teams that lead in rushing are teams that don't win championships (Texans, Titans, Vikings...)

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:20 PM)

A good run game can create opportunity for a passing game to grow. You don't have to have one or the other, you're allowed to have both.

Michael (B-Town)

Do you think Drake Nevis could potentially start week 1? I guess training camp is also a big factor for that decision...

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:21 PM)

They moved very slowly with Fili Moala as a rookie. Nevis should make a quicker adjustment. But I don't think they will be counting on him for too much opening day. If he catches on and is great early, it's bonus.

Nathan (DC)

Just what is the deal with the Texans, anyway? Is it the coaching? I've always thought Kubiak was pretty good. Is Schaub overrated?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:22 PM)

Neither are finishers. Both could be more fiery.

ctm09 ( clarksville)

Any idea whether the Titans want to resign Harris at OG or find an upgrade in free agency?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:22 PM)

They want to sign Harris and say over and over they want last year's line back in place.

Shane (Los Angeles, CA)

I would think the NFL has no jurisdiction over infractions that occurred during the lockout, and they would be risking several lawsuits if they tried to punish players. While I am sure players/NFLPA who obeyed the law (and a lot of fans, me included) would be for the NFL imposing punishments, I just don't think the NFL. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:23 PM)

If the players sign off on it in a new agreement, it's not an issue. I expect they will.

Del (Louisville)

You told me last week you were rooting hard for the Dores. With Gray starting Friday, Garvin on/if Saturday. How do you like their chances?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:23 PM)

Still going to be tough. Time to break through against the Gators. (Vanderbilt College World Series talk.)

justin (Gwangju, South Korea)

Pretend you are Gene Smith. Who do you pick up in free agency once you have the chance?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:24 PM)

Eric Weddle and Barrett Ruud or Paul Posluszny.

Shane (Los Angeles, CA)

Isn't the rule of thumb for any player to trade them a year too early rather than a year too late? I agree the Titans need Johnson, esp breaking in a rookie QB, but to be honest, I think the best move would be to trade CJ. Titans are not in a win now mode and by the time they MIGHT be in a couple years, CJ will be on the decline. Trading him would net multiple high picks (at least a 1st, maybe a 3rd too), and the Titans could fully embrace the rebuilding process.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:25 PM)

The baseball rule is. A very small percentage of NFL players get traded. The other team would know what was going on, no? Who's giving up a first and a third for him?

Zultan (Earth)

Think the Texans will at least consider chasing Plexico??

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:25 PM)

They should.

Shane (Savannah)

If the Titans plan to do as they say and get bigger on the Dline does it not make sense to move Jones to end opposite Morgan with Ayers flanking the strong side? or am I just oversimplifying the situation?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:27 PM)

Jason Jones probably sees time inside and out. I'd leave him alone. He was damn good. Morgan, Hayes and Babin, Ball or Ford would be a good top three ends, I think.

Kurtis (Houston, TX) [via mobile]

Paul, be honest. The Texans are ur 4th favorite team in the AFC South

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:28 PM)

It's true. They are tied for my fourth favorite. Also tied for my first, second and third favorite. Again, why should I be cheerleading for them?

Brento (Chicago)

What's your take on DeMario Pressley? Didn't do much in New Orleans or Houston, but looks to have the tools to do something in a 4-3. Seems like Houston cut him because of a lack of roster space and Houston cut him more because of the scheme change.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:28 PM)

I think you should aim higher if you're looking for impact. Maybe he replaces Antonio Johnson.

Brento (Chicago)

Hey Paul! How do you feel about Ryan Diem and Kelvin Hayden's chances of being on the Colts squad next season? They both look like cap casualty candidates from an outsider's perspective, and we all know you're no outsider.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:29 PM)

I think Hayden will be around. Diem need to take a pay reduction at the very least.

Kevin (Knoxville)

To follow up on George in SD, I agree that the Colts are not unreasonable in building up their offense. But can they really contend for the Super Bowl with the types of holes they exhibited on D last year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:30 PM)

They exhibited the holes because everyone was having surgery, not because they were poorly constructed.

Nathan (DC)

If the Jags go to LA, do the Chiefs go to the AFC South?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:31 PM)

The Jags aren't going. But the Chiefs will never leave the AFC West. Huge, long-term rivalries there. Flipping things around for St. Louis would make the most sense.

Ed Hochuli (Chat Ref)

The newbie covering the NFC East keeps ignoring me. Would you do me a favor and kindly inform the rook of the error of his ways? Thanks PK.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:31 PM)

Consider it done.

Mike (Indiana)

Do you think the colts should release hayden? powers and lacey could take his place for less money

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:32 PM)

Need more than two, and Jacob Lacey probably is best as a third at best.

justin (Gwangju, South Korea)

Vinny Manuwai and Smiley are both due 3 milion this year. Which 1 should they keep?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:33 PM)

Manuwai, if healthy, is way better.

Brento (Chicago)

I take it based on your response to my question about Pressley that you're not a big fan of Antonio "Mookie" Johnson. That's a shame because he's definitely our best run-stuffing DT from my eye test. Shame that he was hurt so much last season and that Muir is a Bill Polian favorite.Chances Dan Muir makes the roster? Chances Mookie does?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:34 PM)

They are both going to be unrestricted. They'd need to sign them first. They are both limited.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:35 PM)

I am convincing myself you are kidding with many of these questions I am not posting. Eli backing up Peyton? Texans trading Schaub?

Jack (Nashville)

Obviously the Titans aren't going to about-face and become ridiculous free agent spenders when things start up again, but could you see a scenario like 2006 where several moderate deals are made with good veterans who can be plugged in and provide leadership? That was the Mawae-Hope-Thornton year.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:35 PM)

It's absolutely what they need to do. Bring in leaders who can play.

Kevin (Jacksonville, FL)

Who's responsible for cutting Tramon Williams when he was in Houston? Gosh. How big of an epic fail was that gaffe?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:36 PM)

Do we think he would have developed as he has under Houston's coaches? I doubt it.

Kevin (Knoxville)

Following up on Mike in Indiana, given that Hayden has a $9 million cap hit next year (as I recall), why not sign a more healthy, consistent quality FA CB(e.g., J Joseph) and let Hayden go?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:36 PM)

Why not negotiate Hayden's number down?

Michael (B-Town)

Looking at the second Colts-Jags game last year, Collie was unstoppable when he was on the field...is he eventually Peyton's new go-to guy?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:37 PM)

In a Clark kind of way, but not in a Marvin Harrison/Reggie Wayne kind of way.

TwoToneBlueBlood (TN)

Based on the "fruitful" talkes between sides this week, what are the chances that we start on time with a full training camp, preseason, and regular season?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:38 PM)

Looking better and better.

John (somewhere over the rainbow)

Speaking of "building around manning"..how much do you trust their receving squad? I mean every good comment about them has the phrase "if they stay healthy".

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:38 PM)

They need to find their next Wayne.

Nett (D)

Here in "The D" many think Tulloch is coming to the Lions and will be a star...I think he is over rated...what say you?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:42 PM)

I don't even know that he's overrated. Who's rating him? A whole season with over 150 tackles and not one forced fumble or recovery? I need my MLB to make an occasional play. People in The D are connecting a straight line from Tully to Schwartz. Too simple, I bet.

Nathan (DC)

I totally agree with you. The Colts do need to find their next Wayne. Why aren't they trying?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:43 PM)

There is a lockout.

Nathan (DC)

What's your take on Munchak as a head coach?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:44 PM)

Need to wait and see.

Bill Polian (My office)

Hey Paul, many have said that our team has an advantage in this lockout offseason because of our veteran leadership and strong locker room culture. What do you say?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:45 PM)

And because of simple defense that doesn't need a lot of time to sync things up. Absolutely true.

Matt (Indy)

Would you consider Gonzo or Collie their next Wayne?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:47 PM)

No, they aren't the same sort of downfield guys, more possession/slot types.

Nathan (DC)

I think Fisher will coach again. If you were to guess--how soon and where?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:47 PM)

Next year. San Diego. Maybe Houston.

Bradley (TN)

What is the possibility that Kenny Britt gets some kind of punishment from the NFL? If so does this mean that we go find another receiver in free agency or do we just wait the punishment out?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:48 PM)

I think the team will suspend him before the league has a chance to. I don't know that a suspension is cause to shop for a FA if you intend for Britt, Washington, Williams to be your top three.

Kevin (Jacksonville, FL)

John Oehser's been writing about his interviews with Mel Tucker on the Jaguars' website and how they are planning on simplifying the defense in Jacksonville this season. What's your opinion on this notion?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:49 PM)

That it shouldn't have been that complicated in the past.

Kevin (Knoxville)

Colts next Wayne: Sidney Rice?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:49 PM)

If they were going to be bold and spend. Not sure how he'd fit, but he certainly has the explosiveness.

justin (Gwangju, South Korea)

I recall you saying the teams in best shape for an extended lockout were Indy and Houston. Indy I get, but how is a Houston team that is completely rearranging it's defense in better shape than Jacksonville, who will simply be plugging in some free agents?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:50 PM)

Because the offense will be the same, because the Titans have a new staff and the Jaguars have a new quarterback I expect will be playing soon.

tim (last year)

are you picky about the questions you answer?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:50 PM)

Try to be.

Peyton Manning (DirecTV HQ)

You thought my Football Cops commercial wasn't funny? I've always had your support for my comedy career. We haven't been communicating well and I feel left in the dark.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:51 PM)

Possibly the worst TV thing you've done. If you were going to do that, you should have gone ahead with Mr. Popper's Penguins.

Jack (Nashville)

So with Britt's troubles, which of the young Titans WR should be pin our hopes on developing into a solid player? I'll take the next Derrick Mason at this rate...my money is on Williams.

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:53 PM)

It's not hard to pick Damian Williams considering his competition.

tim (last year)

how many more years can the texans get out of Johnson? and when do they need to start getting someone to take over when he gets older?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:55 PM)

Man, a guy can't turn 30 any more before everyone wants to find his replacement. Several years left.

Kevin (Jacksonville, FL)

Will you be visiting Jacksonville at all for training camp?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:55 PM)

Of course.

justin (Gwangju, South Korea)

what's the record for most answered questions in a chat? Am I close? Do you get some kind of trophy?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:56 PM)

Sorry, I don't really pay much attention to the name on the question.

Joey (San Antonio, TX)

I know you try to follow as many NFL players on Twitter as possible for the Twindex... have there been any you have UNfollowed because of how bad they are?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:56 PM)

There have been many I wanted to unfollow. But I am sticking it out. New edition of Twindex on Friday. Just finished it...

Shane (Los Angeles, CA)

Why isn't Indy in the market for one of these veteran WRs? They are contenders, have a fragile receiving corps, and Manning can keep anyone in line. They could get Plax without breaking the bank & give Manning a big bodied red zone target to throw to (assuming Plax can handle assimilating Indy's offensive playbook).

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:58 PM)

How do we know who's in the market for which players? The Colts don't struggle in the red zone. They need guys to help them get there more than guys to help them once they are there.

Brent (FL)

I like in baseball how all the parks are a different size. What if football did that and had some fields that were 110 yards and some were 97. Don't you think that would be interesting?

Paul Kuharsky
 (3:59 PM)

No, I don't. Random changes in the middle of the history of a sport don't intrigue me much, really.

Kevin (Jacksonville, FL)

Think you'll be able to catch the "Oklahoma Drill" this year? I would like to see Alualu or Knighton agains Will Rackley. Your picks?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:00 PM)

I was utterly underwhelmed by it the year I saw it. I know a lot of people were disappointed to hear me say it. I appreciate and respect the tradition, but have to be honest.

tim (last year)

can jackson become a shutdown corner in the NFL? he is now getting better coaching and i think the speed of the NFL was too much for him in his rookie year. plus maybe this year he wont fall down as much

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:00 PM)

How about we go for competent before we even utter shutdown? There are two shutdown corners in the league.

Joey (San Antonio, TX)

Bit of a behind-the-scenes question for you: How do you and the rest of the NFL Division bloggers decide on which topics to write and which joint features to do? Do you have weekly meetings?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:01 PM)

Bosses in Bristol come up with some of the stuff we all do, and some of it comes out of pitched ideas from us. But the bulk of it comes from the guy whose picture is on each blog.

Kurtis, Houston [via mobile]

u really dont think the texans have a prayer for playoffs? they werent that bad last year considering defense injuries, youngest secondary in the game, and hardest schedule

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:04 PM)

The Colts were way more injured and went 10-6! You're quite the apologist. Weren't that bad? Ever heard the Parcells' expression, 'You are what your record is?' The Texans are the Titans, Cowboys, Lions, Redskins, Vikings and 49ers.

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:04 PM)

OK folks, thanks for coming. Have a big weekend.
