Chat with AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (10:59 AM)

Good morning, gang! We're back once again for an hour of fantasy chattage... Second cup of coffee is in hand... Who is The Voice? Who cares! Let's kick things off, shall we?

Scott (Seattle)

Why, why, why, why do managers insist on putting closers in the game in non-save situations?? Has a closer ever recorded a 1-2-3 inning in a non-save situation? Ever?

AJ Mass
  (11:01 AM)

Of course, they do... and you'd be far more upset if your closer sat for weeks on end, waiting for a save situation. Yes, Leo Nunez, we're looking at you.

Seth Smith (Colorado)

Time for me to break out? Or is the OF here just too crowded?

AJ Mass
  (11:03 AM)

The Rockies have always seemed to have 5-6 guys for the three OF spots, and Seth will still sit for EY2 and Spilborghs. Of course, by missing out on LHP, his BA stays high, so it's sort of a win-win.

Scott (Scottsdale)

Another stinker from Max last night. ERA almost 8 over the last 6 starts and no K's to speak of. What's the consensus? Mechanical issues? Health? Should he be owned in a 10 team mixed?

AJ Mass
  (11:05 AM)

I think people just got so caught up in the early undefeated start, and see the 9-wins and expect more from Max than what he is -- a work in progress. I still want to own him, because there's potential -- but spot starts for now.

steve (san diego)

Liriano a must start pitcher ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:07 AM)

Until he blows up again... for now, you put him in and hope there's no relapse. But like watching a Tarantino film... just because things seem upbeat and jovial, that doesn't mean the scene won't end in blood.

Matt ("Work")

Boesch or Gardner while Crawford is on the DL?

AJ Mass
  (11:09 AM)

Boesch. I like Brett, but with a return the the 9-hole looming...

Jon (Chicago)

Are you concerned about Lincy yet?

AJ Mass
  (11:11 AM)

You have to be somewhat concerned... but not to the point you don't trot him out there every start.

Greg (New York)

Oswalt or Anibal ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:11 AM)

Anibal... Oswalt hasn't looked right all season.

Dillion Gee (The Loss Column)

Was last night just the occasional bad start every pitcher has, or a sign of things to come for me?

AJ Mass
  (11:13 AM)

The BAA was simply not going to stay at .200 the whole season, given Gee's stuff. He's over-achieved so far, but he still has a legit shot at 14 wins this season.

Betty (NY)

Baker or Carrasco ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:14 AM)

Baker for me.

Derek (Cincinnati)

I need a couple of bottom-of-the-rotation starters in an NL-only league. How would you rate: Dempster, Lannan and Volquez?

AJ Mass
  (11:15 AM)

In the order you posed the question...

Bob (Boston)

Would you drop Arenciaba for Martin in 10 team std roto?

AJ Mass
  (11:16 AM)

It's pretty close, but I would.

Here's Johnny! (the Bathroom Door)

Colon, Hughes, Bumgarner order ROS...Currently have Colon and Bumgarner on team

AJ Mass
  (11:18 AM)

I still like Madison, despite the awfulness of yesterday. And I'm not going anywhere near Hughes.

Brad (Philly)

What are you expecting from Ryan Zimmerman ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:18 AM)

My prediction? PAIN!

Dave (CT)

What's a fair player to trade for for Pineda in a 10 X 10 roto league...I need HR and RBI's.

AJ Mass
  (11:20 AM)

Ethier, hoping the power returns... maybe a guy like Jhonny.

Rob (NJ)

AJ really respect your opinions, but why are their certain guys like Bumgarner and Gordon Beckham (think Dave Bush a few years ago) who are constantly given free passes by the experts even though the results show otherwise?

AJ Mass
  (11:22 AM)

I don't think anyone gives guys free passes, but I also think, in general, people overreact to a SP's last start (in both directions) - Madison to me is a No. 5 fantasy starter right now, but I don't drop him based on one fiasco. Beckham, on the other hand, I don't think I've said too many good things about him at all...

Clubber Lang (The Ring)

Listen Fool. Rank these or prepare your prediction to come true... Headley, McGehee, Chipper, Polanco, and Freese ROY.

AJ Mass
  (11:23 AM)

Freese, Chase, Chipper Placido, Casey.

Brad (Philly)

Pain? The Clubber Lang reference is cute, but what about numbers?

AJ Mass
  (11:26 AM)

Zimm is back, his numbers will be what we thought, minus a few games. 20 HR easy, close to .300 BA.

John (NJ)

Weeks in Oakland is on fire! Pick-up or leave on the wire?

AJ Mass
  (11:27 AM)

I'd say he *has* to continue to get PT over Mark Ellis. Hopefully he will be in lineup tomorrow, as I will be at game and can see for myself. I'd cautiously pick up.

Paul Konerko (Chicago)

5 straight games with a home run, I'm the MVP thus far right?

AJ Mass
  (11:28 AM)

You're good, but you're no A-Gon.

Kevin (Chicago)

Who is a better replacement for Pujols? Moreland or Freeman?

AJ Mass
  (11:29 AM)

Moreland for me. I don't get the Freeman thing at all - he's not even in top 3 1st basemen in NL East for me.

Drew (ATL)

AJ, love the chats. Would you trade YoGa to get Greinke, straight up?

AJ Mass
  (11:30 AM)

I would, Ms. Abdul.

Ivan Drago (Russia)

I must brrreak you...Have to drop Nick Swisher or Alcides Escobar to pick up Liriano off the wire. Who do I drop?

AJ Mass
  (11:32 AM)

Unless you absolutely can't find another SS, it's "I'll See Ya" Escobar.

Brandon (RI)

Will you be doing any book signings?

AJ Mass
  (11:33 AM)

No, but I'll be doing book singings... Casio keyboard lovers rejoice! Actually, I think we may schedule some in NY and Philly... at least to start.

Jason (Madison)

How do you handle a guy like Castro? Play him for the avg and doubles or find a guy who can get HR and RBIs?

AJ Mass
  (11:35 AM)

Depends. I mean, he's giving you average and runs and SB... and a lot of guys who give you HR/RBI don't give you those things. This is what managing your team is all about... allocating resources to maximize results.

Johhny (St. Louis)

Better chance of you dropping the Rocky references or Rasmus finding his stroke?

AJ Mass
  (11:36 AM)

I don't think Rasmus finds his stroke, but if I can change... and you can change... maybe Colby can change!

Jason (St Louis)

Is Gavin Floyd worth owning?

AJ Mass
  (11:37 AM)

Yes, he is. Rather have him than say, Correia or Kuroda.

Jay (Chicago)

Got to take Soriano off the DL...drop Rajai or Pierre??

AJ Mass
  (11:38 AM)

I think you drop Rajai... but it's not pretty owning either guy right now.

Jared (Chicago)

Why does Justin Smoak get no love? He seems to fly under everybody's radar. Is it just because of the team?

AJ Mass
  (11:40 AM)

Indeed. West coast bias. Put his numbers next to Ryan Howard's right now, and there's not a lot of gap, save for the runs scored. He's an up-and-comer to be sure.

Ken (Chicago)

Woah woah woah. Konerko has been pretty much the only one on the team hitting with that bum Dunn twiddling his thumbs. Gonzalez is in a loaded lineup. If we make the playoffs and Konerko keeps hitting, how is he not the MVP?

AJ Mass
  (11:41 AM)

That a big *if* there, Kenny. Why don't we get to .500 first and then we'll look to considering rewarding your boy.

HeyWood ( State-Pen)

Chris Carpenter the ROY any hope ? He was just dropped in a 10 team H2H league... Thanks

AJ Mass
  (11:42 AM)

Worth a flier... a couple of breaks in the W-L department and he's a top 30 right now.

David (Tulsa)

Would you start Cueto today?

AJ Mass
  (11:44 AM)

Probably not... first there was an injury bump, then a rain out... I'd be worried his preparation is way off - and then there's the opponent.

Adam (TX)

Order these 3 Players (but do it quick please, i need to run to the wire!):Rios, Smoak, Swisher

AJ Mass
  (11:45 AM)

Smoak, Swisher, Rios.

Megan (LA)

Morse/Papelbon or McCutchen/Melancon?

AJ Mass
  (11:46 AM)

Morse/Papelbon in a walk.

Jeremy (NJ)

With all of this talk about MVPs...who would you say are the top 3 "Fantasy MVP's" right now? I'd probably say Kemp, Reyes, Konerko (given where he was drafted)

AJ Mass
  (11:47 AM)

Value to date is Kemp, Reyes, Braun. Konerko would be around 12. Where a player was drafted shouldn't enter into it.

Mike (SC)

I really appreciate how early you posted the daily notes today, think you could do that again tomorrow?

AJ Mass
  (11:48 AM)

Thanks, but it's a lot easier with only 5 games on the schedule. Just saying...

Michael Young or Alex Gordon, ROY? And in 2012?

AJ Mass
  (11:50 AM)

Gordon this year. For 2012, I need to see where Young ends up...

Arl (Mill-ee-wauk-ay)

Drop Matusz for Bud(weiser) Norris?

AJ Mass
  (11:51 AM)

No Pabst Blue Ribbon? I'll go with Bud, then, I guess, neighbor.

Christopher (Cleveland)

Continue to stash Jennings or pick up Espinoza?

AJ Mass
  (11:53 AM)

If you haven't seen a need for Danny thus far, you might as well hold out.

Jeff (MI)

I think draft position totally matters for "fantasy MVP"....the guy technically could have braun rd1, kemp rd3, reyes rd4, konerko rd 14 or getting such good production in rd 14 made that guys team that much better....u expect braun to be a stud...nobody expects there late round pick to be right there too...

AJ Mass
  (11:56 AM)

To me, all that matters is the stats. If I get 1st Round production from my 1st Rounder versus 1st Round value from my 20th Rounder, it counts the same.

Jeff S. (Vermont)

LVP has gotta be Hanley, right? Crawford?

AJ Mass
  (11:56 AM)

No, LVP is Andy Sonnanstine.

Jose Bautista (Toronto)

Give me my respect. I'm in the running for MVP

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

Nobody said you weren't - and today, it's between you and Asdrubal on my ballot.

Yuniesky Betancourt (WI)

Im top five in voting for all star team and hit a hr last night!! Should I pick myself up in a very deep league?

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

How do I put this... um, er... no.

Terrence (Philly)

If ADP doesn't matter, why is Gonzo not on that list? To date he's consistently produced, even with Pedroia injured, and Crawford and Youk struggling..

AJ Mass
  (12:00 PM)

Sure, but 20-10 HR-SB is more valuable than 15-1.

Matt (NH)

Beltre or Cruz AJ....who ya got?

AJ Mass
  (12:01 PM)

Cruz for rest of season, but if you wanted Beltre there's no way I'd call you out.

AJ Mass
  (12:02 PM)

That's the ball game! We'll be back on Friday for another chat... and the Twitter from time to time in the interim. Until then, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor!
