What's happening gang? What's on your mind today?
Hi Terry, 44 year old Burton has 21 cup wins, same as 26 year old Kyle Busch. Obviously, Burton is never gonna win the Sprint Cup and only 1-2 more races if he's lucky, so why do these old drivers keep hanging on? Why do that retire with dignity like Rudd, Rusty, DJ etc.?
Simple Steve. Money. Lots of money. Burton just signed a new deal with RCR worth milions of dollars.
Interesting story on Burton but if reminded me of Pulp Fiction when the boxer was told that the sport is full of unrealistic people. Why won't NASCAR people admit that there is no way a 44 year old driver is gonna compete with a 26 year old stud like Kyle Busch?
I think this comparison is a little unfair Dan. A lot of 30-ytear-old drivers can't compete with Kyle. You're talking about the most talented driver in the sport. There's aren't many Kyle Busch's out there at any age. And I don't think Jeff is watched up. I believe he still can race competively for a few more years.
Hi Mr. Blount, now that the Brickyard 400 isn't the race it once was, do you think it is time to redefine NASCAR's 3 biggest races to maybe Daytona 500, Charlotte 600 ane Richmond or Bristol?
The Indy race has lost some of it's luster, but it stilll one of Cup's biggest event with a huge purse on the line. I think it's still in the top 4 events.
As a young NASCAR fan it bugs me that these old drivers like Elliott and Labontes use the "champions provisional" to make races while the young dudes that we wanna see race, like Kligerman, Witt, Almirola, Algaier, Ickler all get shut out. Why does NASCAR keep that stupid rule?
They keep it for two reasons _ respect for the accomplishment of a past champ and they fact that many fans still like to see these guys in the field. Having said that, I agree with you. I don't like guaranteed spots in the field for anyone.
Do you know which teams have the most testing experience at Kentucky and do you think that will be a big factor in who wins the first Sprint Cup race there?
I'm not sure, but I don't think it's going to make much of a difference because the track isn't really unique. And all the teams are going to have a lot of practice time that Thursday bfore the race.
For the July Daytona race do you think NASCAR would ever run it it 2 heats like, 50 laps on road course, break , then finish with 100 laps on the oval?
Nice idea, but never gonna happen.
Hi Terry, yesterday on NASCAR Now we saw the '91 Sonoma race where Martin made a mistake on the last lap and Earnhardt won. Question: of today's drivers do you think Kyle Busch is the only driver who can show up in the rear view mirror and intimidate them into making mistakes like Dale did?
No, not the only one on a road course. Stewart can do that, and even someone like Ambrose because other drivers know how good he is on road courses.
Terry, Rowdy won all 3 road course races that he entered in '08, so why doesn't Kyle get mentioned along with our other all time best NASCAR road racers?
I think he gets mentioned a lot for his road-course skills. He's clearly one of the best right now, but give it a little time before most people list him with the all-time best.
Terry, do you think Kurt, Truex and Boyer will be heading hunting #24 at Sonoma for what Gordon did to them last year?
I wouldn't call it head-hunting, but I know Martin hasn't forgotten what happened.
Hi Terry, with Dale Jr . being so sensitive do you think another bad finish like at Mich. will destroy his confidence going into Daytona? Thanks!
Absolutelty not, especially since this weekend is a road course race. He knows the team is much better and he knows he can win at plate races.
Terry would a top 20 finish be good for the 16 team this weekend considering he's not all that good on road courses?
I don't think Biff would consider an 18th-place finish a good day no matter where it is.
With all of Tony Stewart's moaning about Ford engines and everyone, except him, driving like idiots, why doesn't he go back to Indy car racing if he doesn't like how we do things in NASCAR?
All drivers gripe if they think another manufacturter has an advantage. That's nothing new. Tony loves NASCAR. He isn't going anywhere.
What nascar teams are interested in signing Danica for next year?
Possibly Stewart-Haas. But any team with a spot would consider it because she brings all that GoDaddy money with her. However, you probably have to pair it with a NW operation because she's likely to run one full season there first. At least that's what she should do.
Which drivers are the most overpaid in NASCAR based on your knowledge of their salaries?
I think anmy driver who is willing to put his life on the line every week is worth every penny he can get.
Do you think we will see Bayne and Stenhouse taking over for Kenseth and Biffle at RFR in the next several years?
That's way down the road Rob. I think Trevor and Ricky are looking to move up long before those guys retire.
Hey Terry, who's your top 5 for this weekend? And where do you see Paul Menard finishing?
My top 5 are Ambrose, Kyle, Jeff Gordon, JJ and Stewart. I don't see Paul being a factor here.
When Jr gets his next win do you think that will snowball into more wins or just be a one and done?
I don't think it will snowball, but I think he could win more than one.
Dietrich Mateschitz of Red Bull is considered one of the great marketers of all time, especially in sports marketing. It has to give NASCAR pause that he does not believe NASCAR is a good marketing platform.
I don't think they are losing any sleep over a sponor pulling out, but it does hurt NASCAR if they teams fails to srive (I don't think that will happen). The truth is Mateschitz made some big mistakes in how he set up this team and handcuffed the management team at times in the direction they needed to go to get better.
Behind closed doors, is NASCAR secretly hoping more for a Dale Jr win, or for the NFL to not be playing on Sundays this fall?
I honestly don't think they are rooting for the NFL lockout to continue (it won't, by the way). But I defintely think they loved to see Junior win. They would publicly admit that.
Terry, as a Edwards fan what are the chances you think he wont be in RFR car next year. I dont wanna see him JGR thats for sure. No Toyota racing please
Toyota is in NASCAR to stay Dave. I've never understood the Toyota hate. The more manufacturers the better. But I think Carl is staying at RFR. I'd say it's 70/30 he stays.
What Dale Jr. stat is more telling: 1 win in 3 plus seasons at Hendrick-108 race losing streak1 win since Richmond 2006- 1 for 178
And there are a lot of drivers who don't have one win over that span Ben. And none of them rank third in the standings.
With Hyundai and Volkswagen building new factories in the South and creating thousands of jobs do you think we will see them enter NASCAR?
Not anytime soon, but maybe on down the road.
What driver do you think will surprise everyone and make the chase
Well, I think Brad K might might creep into the top 20 and earn a wildcard spot.
Do you think Matt Kenseth has a legitimate shot to win the Championship this year?
Absolutely. Once the Chase starts, it's all about consistency and he's the master at that, plus the fact that Fords are much better this year.
Did JGR submit the oil pans for NASCAR approval and will they be on the cars at Daytona?
No, and I don't think they would get approved.
Terry no jpm in your top 5? You must have made a mistake!
You're right Rick. My bad. I completely forgot about Juan. He defintely could win it.
If a new team is formed from the remains of Red Bull Racing, do you think that team will stick with Toyota or switch to Hendrick Chevrolets? Will the contract that Red Bull had with Toyota hold for the new team or will they need to sign a new one?
All that is up ion the air, but Toyota wants to keep the team in its stable.
I read that, thru the first 16 races, Kyle Busch got more that 1,000 more media mentions than the next driver. Does that mean that Kyle is moving up in fan popularity?
No, it means that he gets attention, good and bad, and as we've seen, some of it is about bad things that happened. But Kyle has plenty of fans. He moves the meter. Fans either love him or hate him.
Who do you think will have a better season in 2012, Junior or Kahne?
Very interesting question. I'll go with Junior because anytime you have a transition, even to a better place like Kasey will have, it can take a while to get comfortable.
If Dale Jr. wins the Sprint cup and fails to win a race, what will that do for his legacy? If ANYBODY wins the Sprint Cup without winning a race, will the Rules Committee consider further changes to the point system?
As for Dale, wins or no wins, it would greatly enhance his legacy to win a Cup title. However, if that happens with anyone, NASCAR would have to consider a rule change to prevent it from happening in the future. You don't want a winless champ.
If a driver gets into the chase without winning a race, does he sort of give up and realize that's too big a hole to dig out of?
Definitely not. If you're running in the top 10 but haven't won a race, you still can win the title.
If you don't want a winless champ, what about the NNS and NCWTS champs? It's *very* likely the winner won't have a win.
That's possible and it's sad, but it's still better than having a Cup star as the NW champ.
To Joe's question, wouldn't that be a NASCAR disaster for Dale to win the Sprint Cup without winning a single race?
No way. Regardless of how it happens, a Junior title would be huge. Sure, it would be controversial, but that's not bad either. Anything that keeps Junior in the news as a Cup champ is a good thing.
Back in '08 when Jr made the chase but finished 12th, didn't the writers all say he was totally disinterested during press conferences?
Some people may have said that, but Junior is a totally different person now than he was the last couple of years. He's much happier and much more confident.
will Logano be out of the 20 car next year?? :I know gibbs say no, but with the availability of Carl its a perfect scenario for Home Depot long term with a proven winning driver
The Carl deal is still iffy at best, but yes, I think Joey is in trouble whether Carl comes over or not.
So if a driver finished 2nd in all 36 races, you don't think he would deserve the title?
No I don't. Pro sports competition is about winning.
HI terry if edwards by chance happens to go to gibbs they should get brad k too that would be entertainment with busch, edwards, and keselowski as teammates
I don't the old Joe's heart could stand the strain on that combo.
With what JGR has invested in Joey, wouldn't Coach make a crew chief change before a driver change?
Hard to say, but Zippy has been there a long time. It could depend on what Zipoy has planned for his future.
Add Harvick to that team and you would have a 4 ring circus.
I don't think my heart could stand the strain of that one, but I'd sure have plenty to write about before I kicked off.
Why don't people blame Mark Martin for Joey's troubles since it was Mark that guaranteed Joey was ready for Sprint Cup?
That's silly. Mark did a very nice thing to say he thought Joey was a great driver who could become a star in Cup. Joey's problems stem from being forced into Cup too soon after Stewart left to own his own team.
Do you think that Kevin Harvick has a chance winning this weekend and how do you think his championship chances are?
Kevin always has a chance to win, but he wouldn't be one of my picks this weekend. I think his championship chances are decent, but I probably would rate them behind Carl, JJ, Kyle and Matt.
Any chance Hendrick gets Kahne in the 5 this year now that Red Bull is done?
I think it's unlikely, but they might discuss it if things are going poorly for Red Bull. And I don't think Mark would take it very well.
What did you think of Robby Gordon on NASCAR Now yesterday saying that only "race car drivers" like him, Jeff and Tony have the skills to win in any race car on any type of track?
I don't see Robby winning on any oval tracks in a stock car.
If Junior doesn't win a championship during his tenure at Hendrick, will Rick Hendrick privately or publicly regret the decision to sign him?
No. That deal has made Rick lots of money.
Does M & M not care that Kyle is a poor role model, especially for children?
Yes they do care, which is one reason Kyle is reluctant to get into a physical fight with anyone.
The 5 better get a different CC and team because that is a problem for that 5 team. What do you think?
I think Kenny Francis will be the cc of that car next year.
I think that while Kyle has gotten some bad press this year overall his demeanor has been much improved from previous years.
I agree, but he remains a lightening rod for controversy.
Do you think Sonoma will be a fuel mileage race or a late caution, best performing car/driver wins?
Sonoma often is a fuel-mileage race and that seems to be a trend this season.
Speaking of Harvick, does he have a chip on his shoulder? Why is he always so hyper-sensitive?
Kevin loves to stir the pot. It's his nature, and it makes my job more fun
Shouldn't Carl make a decision by the Chase? If he is in limbo, Jack won't be happy.
He definitely will make a decision before the Chase starts.
Gotta run folks. Another great one today. You guys are on it with excellent questions, hot and heavy. I like it. Have a great weekend. Peace.
