Hey, everybody. Am I the only one keeping an eye on the last Big 12 team alive in Omaha? The Aggies are looking strong early.
Besides the diamond, what's on your minds today?
Just how good can Oklahoma State be this season?
Could, within reason, go undefeated and play for a national title.
I think they'll lose 1-2 games, but I don't think any team in the preseason top 10-15 would surprise too many folks by running the table.
David: Your ACC colleague Heather said the North Carolina would have one of the best defenses in the country next year. Is there a contender to that in the Big 12? Aside from UNC, who are the best nationwide?
UNC always has a lot of talent, but it seems like it never turns it in to very much. As for Big 12 defenses, I don't think there's a truly great one in the Big 12 this year. I'd expect Texas, Missouri, OU, and A&M to be among the best. I doubt any of those are in the national top 10, though.
I thought Baylor was pretty low on your QB rankings, you selling your RGIII stock?
Absolutely not. Robert Griffin III is a game-changer, but outside of the Missouri game in 2009, I wasn't very impressed with what Nick Florence did, and behind him, it's a bit sketchy. I gave Tech a small nod based on its depth. Karam and Doege both look like Big 12 starters, and the two behind them are really, really promising.
Griffin is still going to be No. 3 on my eventual QB rankings.
Will the Longhorn Network be airing HS games? Would this be an NCAA violation?
Still working this out. It's a whole new deal in a whole new media landscape, so there has to be a lot of conversation on what's acceptable, and what's not. Texas is obviously breaking new ground here, so we'll see what it ends up looking like. I don't think, if Texas ends up being able to do it, it's going to be that big of a deal. Because Texas, as we all know, struggles to get any good recruits to their campus already, right? Fans doomsday worries are off base.
Iowa State is great at playing upset, and its usually late in the season. Nothing would have made me happier than a successful 2-pt conversion to knock off Nebraska last season (and give them the boot on the way out, too!). Who's season is Iowa State most likely to ruin in 2011?
Interesting question, but I don't really see a team that the Cyclones match up well with. If Missouri's offense struggles with a new QB this year, it's the obvious pick, but Iowa State's big upsets and the near upset last year came against teams with really poor offenses.
Why do the Aggies and Hogs insist on playing in Arlington in the long term? Each team has a sizable stadium on campus. Surely after paying the bills and splitting the profits, more money is to be made in a home-and-home scenario. Not to mention the atmosphere is far superior at the home fields compared to Jerry's soulless personal palace?
Because they're getting paid big bucks to do it, and having a game in Dallas is a huge deal. Both schools have huge alumni bases in Dallas, and bringing a game to your boosters is always a good idea. Also, why would a program not want to play a game at the best football stadium in the world? Arkansas and A&M have great stadiums, but one game a year there is a fantastic idea. Great series for both teams.
Both teams receive $5 million annually for playing that game. That's almost as much as a bowl payout, and more than some.
It's also more money than Texas and Oklahoma get ($4.7 million) for playing in the Cotton Bowl. So, that should answer your question.
Was wondering if there is a possibility or even a want to by big 12 programs to add a fourth OOC game to give a thirteenth game? Would it even help when/if SOS comes into question?
That's an NCAA decision, not one done by conferences. And no, I highly, highly doubt a 13th game would ever happen.
David: Who do you think is the most hated team in College Football?
I was talking to a friend about this over the weekend, actually. Notre Dame is always going to have people railing on them for being annually overrated, but I've never, ever seen the almost universal hatred for Texas reach the levels it has in the past year. The combination of the Longhorns pulling most of the strings in realignment, plus the new network, right before plummeting to a 5-7 season all of a sudden makes people forget that a lot of the attention and money Texas has earned was exactly that, earned. One year doesn't erase that.
Of course, the fans I hear from seem to disagree. TEXAS IS TERRIBLE AND HAS NEVER BEEN GOOD! RABBLE RABBLE! TELEVISION!
Will the Jayhawks be much improved from last season?
My take: Kansas will go as its quarterbacks go, even though its strength is in its running backs this year.
How do you have K-State so low on your running backs rankings? Bryce Brown will be an instant impact and Snyder has proven that he gets the most out of his running backs.
Simply put: Gotta prove it. Bryce Brown hasn't earned his spot yet, while Arthur Brown seems to have done so. That's not a good sign for Bryce's impact next year.
speaking of hogs ags who do you have in that game this year? Ags nearly pulled it off last year. This year I think it happens.
Yeah, I'd agree. I'd probably lean A&M right now, but it'll be a toss-up. That game isn't until October, so we'll get a chance to see them play beforehand.
Assuming you attend at least one UT home game this season, will you make any appearances on the new Longhorn Gameday?
No idea. Maybe, but we haven't gotten that far just yet. I don't do a ton of TV, outside of the occasional phone interview.
If all the Big XII coaches were recruiting to the same school, which coach would be the best closer on the recruiting trail?I feel like Turner Gill would be the best. Unfortunately, he has to recruit kids to KU.
He's probably up there, but players love playing for Mack Brown. He'd probably be my No. 1 there.
You mentioned a week or two ago that you would not include any of the Dallas BBQ restaurants in your top 10. How would you rate the Kansas City BBQ restaurants?
Arthur Bryant's, Oklahoma Joe's and Jack Stack are all in my top 10. Not a fan of Gates.
Will I be the next successful Mizzou QB?
My guess: Yes.
David, you were born with a face for TV!Or is that a face for internet blogging???
What, it can't be both? I'm crushed.
A lot of people are predicting my Sun Devils to be the South division champs in the first year of the new PAC 12. With arguably the best defense in the conference, led by possible Nagurski trophy winner Vontaze Burfict, do you think the Devils can go to the Rose Bowl?
I only saw ASU play a couple times last year, but I'm interested to see Burfict play against Mizzou this year. I didn't really pay a ton of attention to him last year.
Any good Q in Columbia MO?
Buckingham is pretty good. Probably just outside my top 10.
Do you buy Dave Sittler's argument opposing Bob Stoops and the state of college football?
I'm somewhere in the middle. I don't think college football is being ruined, but I don't think you can shrug off these problems from major problems like Stoops sort of did. They're big problems. It's not to the level of cycling just yet, but it seems like all the major programs are having at least a few issues.
If Ohio State gets the death penalty, does the Big 1G kick them out and go after Missouri to replace them? Will MU even be able to leave?
Really? Did someone just ask this question? There's like 15 things wrong with this.
Thoughts on OU's Offensive and Defensive lines?
Offensive line should be strong. Ben Habern is a great center, and the loss of Jarvis Jones for the first part of the season won't be a huge deal, in my opinion. On the D-line, the ends will be strong with Ronnell Lewis and Frank Alexander, but I don't think the tackles will be very good. McFarland has a lot of potential, but I don't see Stacy McGee as an All-Big 12 kind of player.
How many QB's will I start this season?
Actually the Big 10 is kicking out Ohio State and adding the Indianapolis Colts
I've heard that rumor, too. Jim Irsay is a wheeler and a dealer.
He and Jim Delany are tight. I think they played on the same high school team and were the best men in each other's weddings. How can it NOT happen?
I'm concerned about my competing receivers getting my tosses. Will the new kids crater my stats this year?
Nope. I don't think we'll see 1,700 yards and 20 touchdowns again, but I think 1,500 and 15 will happen again, and the Biletnikoff will come down to Broyles and Blackmon but be much closer than last year.
I must be missing something... what's changed about A&M to propel them from being a 9-4 team last year, to being a possible contender for the championship.
Switched QBs and went 5-1 with Tannehill. Plus, they return everybody but two linebackers, a defensive lineman and their center. Plus, they have the best RB duo in the league and maybe the country. How's that?
If you had to choose between blackmon/broyles for the biletnkoff who are you picking?
Last year, it was Blackmon by a pretty safe margin, though Broyles was the No. 2 over Alshon Jeffery. I'm not venturing a guess this early for 2011.
If you are the most hated then you must be doing something right.Use my comment Ubben or ill slap the sleeper hold on you!
There's something to that. I don't see a lot of people hating on Duke football. It's not like Texas is doing things to make people hate them. This isn't 1980's Miami we're talking about.
6-1 w/ Tannehill Dubbs.
Check your numbers again, sir. Jerrod Johnson started against Kansas. 5-1.
How many TD's does your crystal ball show me scoring on KR's this year?
Am I going to have fleming and trey m. on the field this year
I'm guessing on both and reading in to recent comments, but I'm going to say yes on both.
I thought it was interesting that Jamell Fleming and Marcus Trice were both on the team bus to Austin Box's funeral. But Trice for sure isn't coming back, so who knows what that actually means.
Texas football 2011 - range of 6-6 to 9-3 at best. What do you think is realistic - I am at 8-4?
Looks about right. Texas could win 10 games, but I don't think it'll happen.
Is that 2+2 = 4? You did say I might be the fastest player in the big 12. Faster than DJ Monroe?
It's dang close between the two of them. OU learned the hard way from both, but got the last laugh by beating Texas and OSU.
Will Gundy be calling offensive plays this year? Or will he let me make the calls?
Monken's calling the plays.
Are you using a magic 8-Ball to answer these questions?
It is decidedly so.
Biggest reason A&M won't be a title contender lies just south of OKC.
I said that much in my A&M Hope
Is this chat bad luck for Aggie baseball?
Sure seems like it.
Could I be the next Justin Blackmon of the Big 12?
I wouldn't go that far, but All-Big 12 first-team 2012 seems like it could be in your future.
With OU, OSU and A&M looking to make a run at the National Championship, is it safe to say the new look Big 12 will be able to compete with the SEC in regards to the best overall conference? Or is the rest of the conference too middle of the road or less?
Maybe. It'll depend on if somebody runs the table. But with Ohio State's free fall, I think it's clear that for 2011, the Big 12 has surpassed the Big Ten.
Ubben,What other programs AD's are making moves like Richard Justice mentions about Bill Byrne @ Texas A&M?
I can think of one. I'll be posting about him shortly on the blog.
Can you beat Paul Rhoads in arm wrestling? I dont think you could.
I think you're right.
As far as hating Texas, maybe expecting the Iowa States of the world to guarantee your revenue might be a factor. Texas is too piggish to realize a balanced league brings in more revenue for everyone.
That's debatable. And since when is it an AD's job to make sure the rest of the conference's tide rises? Texas wouldn't make $15 million/year if it packaged its media rights in with the rest of the Big 12. I assure you that.
I don't see anything on Texas Tech in here, are you leaving us out for a reason Ubbs?
Not very many Tech questions today. How about you ask one instead of complaining about the lack of Tech questions?
David, you can't even beat me in arm wrestling!
Easy, easy now.
I am thinking about contacting Mack Brown to see if I can try out for the QB spot? Gilbert was bad last year and they need help there to just win 8 games...your thought david?
It could happen, but can you be as accurate while fading away on one leg?
I'm felling good. From the spring tapes, do you think I will have the durability for 150 carries this season? What about Michael's at A&M?
Durability isn't the issue. It's the two guys on the depth chart ahead of you.
Texas - Piggish! The reason we still have a Big 12 is Texas stepping up and keeping it in place.
Lots of truth to that. I'll duck now while the A&M fans chuck things at the screen screaming about their flirtations with the SEC throwing a wrench into the creation of the Pac-16.
Are you gonna pick Waco for your first weeks game to attend? A win over TCU would be big for the conference
Not sure yet, but I'd like to be at that game for sure.
Here's a Tech question: If Tech pulls the upset over A&M, they could easily be 5-0, can they turn that momentum into a conference title run?
Yeah, if they're knocking off A&M, that's a pretty strong statement that Tech is a team to take seriously as a contender.
How many touchdowns will malcolm brown score this year?
Here is a Tech question- when was the last time we added anything to our trophy case...
Hey now, that 2008 Big 12 South co-champion trophy is no small feat. That division was ridiculous that year. I'm serious.
Two BCS teams with one loss each and Tech in the Cotton Bowl.
If Baylor beats TCU in its opener, do you think it will be more about the bears getting better or the frogs having a drop off?
Plenty of both. TCU's got big questions on the line, and you never know with young QBs. Baylor is deeper than its been in a long, long time and the defense should mature as the season goes on this year.
A few more questions before we wrap this up...
Will Brandon Williams end up being the better player over Malcolm Brown?
How about we wait until Brown has actually attended a practice at UT?
Are you planning on going to any Mizzou games this year, OSU and Texas will be good!
Probably. Depends on if it keeps winning. We're usually at the biggest game in the Big 12 each week. I only saw Mizzou in person three times (A&M, OU, Nebraska) last year, and once in Columbia.
true or false: OU's hardest game this year will be in Tallahassee on 9/17...
Bedlam will be tougher.
Disagree on Bedlam - you have never been to Florida State for a night game!
Atmosphere, Schmatmosphere. OSU will be the better team.
If Texas wins 10plus game this year, will it show College Football is becoming more like the NFL? One year a team will go 6-10 and the next year they are in the Superbowl
No. Texas is a special case, considering its past success. You never see a team a) fall like UT did in 2010, or b) a team that typically wins 5-6 games a year make a title run or win 10 games.
OK, thanks for all the questions this week. If I didn't get to yours, put it in the Mailbag. We'll have one tomorrow. Thanks again! See you all soon.
