Hi Gang. Let me hear your thoughts.
And bear with me a momtn. I'm finishing a news story on Red Bull.
What drivers are free agents at the end of the season?
OK guys. Sorry about that. Just did the Jay Frye conf. call. ken, the big free agents are Carl Edwards, Clint Bowyer, Juan Pablo Montoya and Brian Vickers.
2 more start and parks for next year, races being taken off basic cable (which means lower ratings and ultimately less sponsorship) which will lead to even fewer quality rides, lower attendance etc... Please tell me NASCAR isn't dying.
NASCAR isn't dying Steve, not even close. It's remains a very profitable sport. But it is in transition in a difficult economy.
How much will Carl's secret fine be for his comments after the race?
Now Steve, if I knew that, it wouldn't be a secret. But I don't think any fine is coming.
Terry, do you think we will see Kasey-Kenny taking over the #5 around Chase time or even sooner, now the RB is withdrawing and Martin is a unlikely to make the chase?
That's a great question, but I don't think so. Rick Hendrick is a very close friend of Jay Frye. I don't think he would do that.
Hey Terry, do you suppose with RB's departure, AMP has to be taking a hard look at their $20M sponsorship, especially since Dale's fans don't fit the typical energy drink target demographic?
If any drivers is worth the sponsorship money, Junior is the guy. But most sponsors today are looking to reduce their investment.
Terry, great article on Red Bull leaving. Agree that it isn't great for the at all. Do you think Edwards returns to Roush w/UPS as the sponsor or w/Aflac or you think Carl leaves all together?
I still think Carl is staying. If Home Depot wants to back up the Brink's truck to sign him with JGR, they probably could. But I was told over the weekend that isn't likely.
Matt Kenseth and Jeff Gordon are having a heck of a year. do u think they are serious threats for the championship this year?
I think Kenseth is. I'm not sure about Jeff. He's won twice, but the 24 teams also has shown some inconsistency.
Do you think Coach might shake up the #20 team and promote Jason Ratcliff to be Joey's crew chief and assisn Zippy to some other role at JGR?
Joe and JD have said they don't plan any changes, but I'm not so sure. It can't go on like this without somehting changing.
Hi Terry, with Red Bull exiting do you think we'll see fields with less than 43 cars at certain races? Also what will they do with all that equipment?
We want see short field this year, although I don't see that as a back thing to start fewer cars. Red Bull is looking for new investors and hopes to return next year intact. i think they have a decent shot at doing it.
Where does Brian Vickers fit into in 2012?
No way of knowing at this point. There aren't a lot of quality rides open out there. And hje may stay at red Bull if they find new investors.
Terry, Do you really think Bowyer was thinking of leaving RCR for Red Bull?
Yes, but obviously, that's off the table now.
Hey Terry, could Jay Frye find a partner (like Mark Martin) and take over the RB operation??? They could be a satellite team to Hendrick like Stewart-Haas.
Anything is possible at this point. But it's going to take some major sponsorship money nmo matter who is involved. Jay said today he loves Mark, but desn't have anything going with him at the moment.
do u think that Brian will go to SHR?
Not unless he has a sponsor to go with him.
Kyle's 6 race losing streak seems like a long time but his 2 straight 3rds show improvement. Do you think Kyle and Dave now have the consistency to make a championship run?
Yes I do. Kyle is a serious Cup contender. he has learned to accept a top 5 and take the points. that will help him when the Chase starts.
Could Mark Martin and Ray Evernham be those new red bull "investors"?
Ray has indicated he isn't really interesting in doing that. Here's the main deal on this: Whoever comes in to take over the ownership is going to have to have sponors in tow.
In the statement from Red Bull they give the impression that they're already talking to someone. So if its not Mark Martin and its not Ray Evernham, who could it be? Any ideas?
It could be a lot of people. I know Michael Andretti wants in NASCAR, but he's also hurting for sponsors.
Hey Terry, do you buy the theory of Danica only running the Indy 500 for Andretti and running NW full time? What NASCAR owner is gonna let her get away with taking the whole month of May off?
She will do it next year if she's only running Nationwide races, but it won't be with Andretti. I know Rahal has talked to get about it.
any word yet on if the JGR teams will recieve penalties for the oil pans?
WHAT ABOUT TURNER MOTORSPORTS TAKING OVER RED BULL? THEY HAVE SAID THEY ARE INTERESTED IN MOVING TO CUP.
Maybe, but it's a huge investment. If they can bring sponors with them, it's possible.
Terry, any chance that Red Bull will just sell the company but still sponsor a car?
Yes, but it sure would look bad to me if they do. You throw your own team under the bus, then go elsewhere. It's just business, as they say.
Can you see anyone currently racing (well, other than Stewart) as a team owner in the future, after retirement?
Martin is the only one on the horizon. I don't see Gordon committing to that after he quits.
Is Red Bull leaving an insult to NASCAR?
No, but it shows they underestimated how difficult it would be to compete in Cup.
Red Bull is all ready celebrating Vettel's second championship.
They might as well. He's a lock.
You're 25 minutes in, and not one Junior or JJ question. Is that some kind of record?
Now Cesar, it just jinxed it.
How much longer you think Gordon might go? If he goes as long as Martin, could he catch Pearson?
Gordon has no intention is racing in his 50s. I don't think he can catch Pearson.
Bob Parsons recently said that he's in favor of Danica going to NASCAR full time. Do you think he might be an interested party for RBR?
That's a very interesting thought Damon. Maybe I should give him a call. That's one guy who could afford it.
Since sponsorships in Cup are getting harder to come by, any chance NASCAR loosens the restriction on exclusivity (Allowing AT&T back, etc)?
I doubt it, but I've been in favor of this for years. The exclusivity thing has to go away.
Heres a jr question:With jr's resurgences this season do you think a road course victory could happen this weekend?
I think the chances of that are slim and none.
Can johnson catch pearson?
Yes he could. JJ has over 50 wins and he's only 35.
In '08, Kyle won all 3 road course races he entered. What makes Kyle a great road racer while Kenseth, Dale and many others struggle on the road courses?
It'sd all about your shift points and how quickly you can outrun another driver into the turns. Kyle is a master at that.
Love him or hate him, Kyle is just a great driver.
On that point, we agree.
For devils advocate so did gordon at 35.
Good point Ryan. That shows how difficult it is. If you are asking my opinion if he'll catch Pearson, I would say no. But it's possible.
Any way Knaus and Johnson ever split up?
I think Chad might go weary on the crew chief role soon, so yes, it's possible.
I agree, the exclusivity thing has got to go. If it did, some major sponsors would probably step up. Didn't Verizon leave NASCAR because they couldn't sponsor a car in cup, or something like that?
Yes, and it also forced AT&T to leave.
Do you think there will be any change to the fleet of drivers at JGR next season?
Logano's future is uncertain. Edwards is still in play with JGR, but I expect him to stay at Roush.
Terry, with Farmer's Insurance sponsoring Kahne for 22 races, what rumors have you heard about sponsorship for the remaining 14 races? Thanks
It's possible GoDaddy could stick around for a few races until Danica goes full time to Cup in 2013.
Could NASCAR take over the operation of RB like MLB did with the Dodgers and NBA did with several teams?
No. Cup teams are independent franchises. NASCAR can't do that.
Terry, I hope Cole Whitt doesn't get lost in the shuffle of the Red Bull situation. That kid has a lot of potential.
I have to think he'll be OK somewhere. Everyone knows he's the real deal.
JGR Crew Chiefs fined 50 K and on probation until end of year. no points penalties. Along with car chiefs and Jimmy Makar. Have a good one Terry.
Thanks Colleen. That's about what I expected.
I heard Danica is going to buy the Red Bull team and Clinique is going to be her sponsor and Dale Jr. will be her crew chief. Everyone always seems to make up sensationalist stories about Patrick, so I figured why not have another.BTW - you heard it here first.
Well thanks Greg. That's as wild as they get.
Do you think F1 will ever come back to Watkins Glenn? I miss that race. I am also showing my age.
I remember those race also Vinnie. But no, F1 is going to The Glen anytime soon.
Who is your favorite this weekend?
I'd probably go with Rowdy, but I hope Ambrose wins. Stanley Tools will donate $1 million to the Children's Miracle Network if Marcos wins the race. And it would be nice redemption after what happened to him last year.
Which types of races do you think are the most fun to attend? Road courses, speedways or short-tracks?
They all have their good and bad aspects. But there's nothing quite as crazy as Dega.
Have you ever been to Laguna Seca? Incredible track. I want to do the Skip Barber training there.
I covered several CART races there. I was there for the famous Zinardi pass on the dirt.
How does Travis Pastrana factor into the Red Bull decision? Is it possible they throw their NASCAR money his way & get out from under the brick
I seriously doubt it. Pastrana is a long way from being a competitive driver in NASCAR.
What has a bigger impact? Dale Jr winning the NW race at Daytona or Danica winning the NW race at Daytona?
Without question, Danica. Jr. has won several times at Daytona. But it would be historic if Danica won there.
I gotta run folks. Sorry. I have to get the NASCAR Now early. Have a great day.
