Chat with Wally Matthews

Wallace Matthews
  (11:50 AM)

Welcome to this week's Yankees live chat, coming to you live from the Great American Ball Park. Yes, I know it sounds pretentious but it's actually a pretty cool place. We'll get started at high noon and we're out right at 12:30 because the first game of today's split DH starts at 12:35. So let's get ready to rumble right after I get me a cup of Bob Evans Signature Coffee from the lunchroom

Michael C. (Westport, CT)

Have you heard the rumor that Scott Boras is trying to steal Bartolo Colon from his current agent?

Wallace Matthews
  (11:57 AM)

Obviously Boras has never seen this guy's food bills

Benny (Bronx)

Hank was quoted as saying Jeter's stay on the disabled list will lengthen his career since he won't be playing as many games this season. Do you think that will spur Hank to extend Derek's contract a year or two?

Wallace Matthews
  (11:58 AM)

Yes. with enough trips to the DL, Jeter can probably play for the Yankees longer than A-Rod, which I believe is his intention

Jo Jo B. (NYC)

There's a conspiracy theory going around that Selig wants Yankees financial wizard Lonn Trost to head a group that buys the Dodgers and moves them back to Brooklyn. Your thoughts?

Wallace Matthews
  (11:59 AM)

That's correct. And Bernie Madoff will serve as the Chief Financial Officer when he gets out of prison in 2111

A-Rod (3rd base)

I'm getting worried that Dirk Nowitzky, Rory McIlroy and Tim Thomas are stealing my thunder. Any ideas how I can get back the tabloid headlines?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:00 PM)

yes. start dating Isaac Mzrahi

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who is the Absolute Worst Manager that the Yankees ever had in their 106 years of exitance?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:01 PM)

Not having covered them quite that long, I can;t say. But I think that Monday night was Girardi's entry into the sweepstakes

Chioke Hassan (Baltimore,Md)

Dear Wally Who was the Yankees top pick in this year's draft?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:01 PM)

Dante Bichette Jr

Matt davenport, ia [via mobile]

Although the Yankees pitching staff has suffered from injury, is it fair to say that healthy or not Girardi continuously mismanages pitchers costing them games?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:02 PM)

I dont think he's cost them any games per se, but he certainly mismanages, micromanages and overmanages his bullpen at times, as evidenced by Monday night's ninth inning, when he was the reason why Mariano Rivera had to get up out of his rocking chair to clean up the mess that Ayala and Logan had left behind

Ray,New York city.. [via mobile]

Will the yankees trade for a starting pitching all bring someone up from the farm system or someone with power who can hit off bench

Wallace Matthews
  (12:04 PM)

I believe the yankees will trade for a pitcher, because none of the vaunted Killer Bs has proven to be ready yet. They also will be in the market for another bat off the bench if you can be had. Say what you will about Cashman, he does have a knack for finding the right guy at the trade deadline

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who is going to Replace Gene Monihan as the Head Trainer for the Yankees in 2012 since Monihan is Retiring after this season?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:04 PM)

Don;t know. the issue hasn;t been addressed. But I am assuming Steve Donahue will take over and hire a new assistant

Bryant H. FBKS, AK [via mobile]

If jeter did fall in the line up, where would you put him?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:06 PM)

That is s very difficult question and perhaps the biggest reason why Girardi is still saying that when Jeter comes back, he returns to the top of the lineup in spite of the terrific job Gardner and swisher have done there in his absence. Maybe you drop him to second, risk his tendency to hit into DPs, and put Granderson sixth?

Jack (Toronto)

Hey Wally,Swish is starting to hit like he did last year; if he keeps it up and ends with around 25HR's, what are the chances his option will be picked up?Thanks

Wallace Matthews
  (12:09 PM)

I think if he can continue the way he is going now, the odds are pretty good because there doesn;t seem to be a great crop of FA outfielders for 2012 -- a lotta retreads -- so even at $10 million for year, swisher might turn out to be a bargain

Max (Rockwood, Tn.)

Isn't it time to question the possibility that Papi is on HGH? After all, he got a free pass on his failed drug test. He never was pressed for an answer. Could it be that since h got off on it that he feels he can get a free ride HGH. His turnaround at his age calls for questions.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:11 PM)

Honestly, I have that suspicion about a lot of guys and until baseball comes up with a reliable blood test that the players will agree on, we will never be sure who's clean and who isn't. Not to single out Ortiz, but anytime a guy makes a turnaround like he did at his age, you have to wonder what's going on. I think the same things about Bartolo Colon. baseball has no one but itself to blame for that.

Matt (Fair Lawn, NJ)

Why isn't A-Rod in the starting line-up for today's game against Cincinnati?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:12 PM)

Girardi said he wouldn;t play both games anyway. I think he's saving A-Rod for Johnny Cueto in the 2d game. On paper at least he looks like a tougher pitcher than Mike Leake

Chris (Mass)

You guys suck! How Does it feel to be in 2nd to us sox.RIGHT NOW! your looking up at us and were shitin alllllll over you!!!!! Stop living in the past this is the NOW and right NOW were in 1st!

Wallace Matthews
  (12:13 PM)

I'll pass it along

jen Parrish (tigard oregon)

whats your biggest surprise so far. I like grandy. im so impressed with how he has embrace the two hole

Wallace Matthews
  (12:13 PM)

Hi, Jen. i agree that it's Grandy as a hitter. never would have predicted 21 HRs by now. But among the pitchers, it's got to be Bartolo

scott (bayonne)

do you think cashman would rather hold on to the majority of the up and coming prospects (killer b's and montero) so they can be a major part of the team in the next couple years? or is he in more of a win now mindset and wouldn't mind dealing them?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:15 PM)

Yes and yes. he wants desperately to hold onto those guys for the future. Plus, he works for the ultimate win-now franchise that plas inthe ultimate win-now city. So i think he's going to have a tough decision to make because it is obvious the Yankees need pitching help, esp a reliever who can get lefties out, if the yankees are to have any hope of beating the Red sox in the playoffs

jen Parrish (tigard oregon)

How do you love double header

Wallace Matthews
  (12:17 PM)

Jen, only fans like doubleheaders. The players hate them, the manager hates them, the media hates them. They decimate the lineup and esp. the bullpen. They are long days. and you never know what the real story is until both games are over. Bad deal for everyone all around

Brian (Chappaqua, NY)

Russell Martin, i'm still not sold on him as a productive hitter, your thoughts?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:17 PM)

I think he's had some big hits but also been prone to cold streaks. His real value,i think, is behind the plate, where he has been outstanding. Anything he gives them at bat is an added bonus

Ben (NY, NY)

What is this, Open Mike Night? Answer some real questions! Like is Girardi serious about Jeter by insisting he will leave him at the lead-off spot when he gets back, or is he really just being nice until hit 3000 when he finally pulls the plug?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:20 PM)

Thank you, Ben, for asking one. BTW, say please next time. Girardi is in a tuf position re Jeter, and I suspect his only reason for saying Jeter is still his leadoff hitter is because he's Jeter. I have wondered if there will be some changes made in the lineup once Jeter reaches 3000. Wouldn;t be surprised if he is dropped to second, although i can;t see him being put where he really belongs in th ebottom half of the order.

Jason (Long Island, NY)

Hey Wally! Will this patchwork of middle relievers be able to continue to build the gap to MO or will the Yanks seek out another reliever via trade?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:21 PM)

I think they're hoping That Guy Soriano will come back after the All-Star Break but I think they willhave to shop for someone who can retire lefties late in a game. They came up with kerry wood at the deadline last season; maybe Cashman has his eye on a similar type this year

craig (ny)

when do you predict jeter will get his 3000th hit

Wallace Matthews
  (12:22 PM)

tough to do when you don;t know exactly when he is coming back. assuming he is ready on the 29th, the first dayhe is eligible to come back, how about Sunday July 3 at CitiField?

Brian (Chappaqua, NY)

How many more years does Gardner have on his contract?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:24 PM)

Gardner's on a one-year deal and becomes arbitration eligible next year

David (Atlanta)

Wally what are the yankees going to do for another left hander out of the pen since Logan can't get anyone out

Wallace Matthews
  (12:25 PM)

Girardi claims to still have faith in Logan but that's got to be BS. If I'm Cashman, that's the No. 1 item on my trade deadline shopping list

Joe (Pittsburgh)

How long until the Yanks get rid of Garcia. Seems to me everytime he pitches he get hit hard and is pulled from the games early.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:26 PM)

let's see what happens today. Right now, they donlt have a lot of replacement parts for the rotation

ASN (NY)

Why does Girardi insist on letting Andruw Jones play? His unwillingness to run it out on that double play Monday, and the fake rolled ankle excuse was total BS.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:26 PM)

agreed. I don;t even know whyhe made the team out of spring training

Craig (NY)

Adam rubin gives better answeres then you do. GO METS

Wallace Matthews
  (12:26 PM)

then go chat with him

Justin (New York, NY)

Wally, how about a serious question - you wrote a column about Gardy and the lead off spot. Think Jeter goes back to leading off when he comes off the DL? I hope not...

Wallace Matthews
  (12:27 PM)

Girardi said yes yesterday, said it again this morning. Gave no real reason other than, "He's Jeter."

Wallace Matthews
  (12:27 PM)

Later, guys. Game time
