It is time to get this party started.
where does polamalu rank among player today and all time safeties and defenders?
Best Safety in football for sure. Amazing and rare football player-when healthy. When you do lists like this though, you have to consider everything. There are several D players I would put over him because of his durability issues-including James Harrison on his own team. Love 43, but I thought Harrison should have won the DMVP last year. But 43 is an all time great and most likely a HOFamer.
What kind of numbers do you think BJGE can put up as the number one back in NE? Granted, it's a team that will throw a ton, out of many different sets, but I think this guy can do a lot of good things. Thoughts?
But I just don't think he will be a true #1 RB. Belichick is exceptional at game planning on a week to week basis to really attack his opponents weakness. That is why they want skill guys with such varying skill sets at every position. Now they really have it at RB with the rookie additions. Some games will be BJGE games-some won't. But I do think he gets the goal line carries and it will help him that NEng is probably going to be ahead late in games.
Cutler's numbers in Chicago are pretty similar to his numbers in Denver. People say he would be better with a better O-line and better receivers, but so would the other 31 starters in the NFL. Has he hit his ceiling?
Oh I don't think so. I don't blame the WRs nearly as much as his OL. Yes, every QB would be better with better OL play, but the Bears' OL was the very worst in the league last year. Can't overlook that. I am a Cutler guy here.
Saw that Dan Graziano said the Giants have serious interest in Poz. To be honest I haven't seen much of him in Buffalo - can he cover?
Would be a great fit. Could play MLB or OLB if need be. I do like Goff as a run player though. But yes, Poz does a decent job in coverage. Injuries are a worry with him though.
Matt- Zach Miller perfect fit for the Giants offense no?
Miller is an excellent fit in every O. Guy is a heck of a player. Certainly would be a major upgrade over Boss as a receiver.
You know, some day this lockout is gonna end...
Why must we rank so-and-so among the "all-time" greats? It's an entirely subjective arguement with no real end...
Of course. Trust me, I am pretty tired of such things. Not to mention, I am 38 years old and wasn't breaking down tape 20 years ago. And there has been a ton of lists and such comparisons lately...because of this lockout!!! Grrrr
I just growled there...like a bear
For those fans who worry about Romo, Cutler, etc: Guess what? There is a starting QB shortage in the NFL. If you arent happy with your QB, please send him to Arizona. We will give you Derek Anderson straight up!
Exactly. Those guys are Top 10 QBs. 20 other teams would gladly take them off your hands!
Rodgers had the worst O-line in 2009 (51 sacks) and put up 4000+ yds, 100 qb rating, 30-7 TD-INTs. Just saying.
Rodgers is the best player in the league. He wasn't in 2009. But he is now. Rodgers is better than Cutler.
Matt, do you expect Forte to keep carrying much of the load for the Bears or do you think Taylor will be a little better than last year and produce more? He got a lot of money last year and now the money he is receiving throughout the rest of his contract he may not have that much pressure, or is it the opposite now? Any WRs you would like to see in Chicago currently not on the roster?
Taylor was dreadful. Forte made me a believer last year. I would strongly consider dumping Taylor. On Twitter yesterday (@WilliamsonNFL by the way), I was talking about R Bush or Sproles possibly to the Bears. Split them out wide. Add a big play element to the O. Martz would know how to best utilize such a RB. Just throwing it out there.
Who will be the Packers' go to receiver next season-- Finley or Jennings?
Finley. Who can cover that guy?
If Redskins sign Asomugha, do they have the best secondary in football with Landry, Atogwe, and Hall?
I would say so. Would say right now GBay is #1. But I guess Wash would get that title.
Had Rodgers gone to SF instead of Alex Smith, is he the same player he is today or did Favre take him to another level?
We really have no way of knowing such a thing. Sitting in a meeting room with Favre and watching him handle is biz on the practice field surely did Rodgers a ton of good. And Mike McC deserves a lot of credit for bringing him along properly too.
If I see "best secondary" and "MeAngelo" in the same sentence again...
Well, he would be the clear weak link. Not a Hall fan either! But that is a pretty darn good foursome!
How about a Reggie Bush to San Fancisco situation? Give Alex Smith a good drop down, scat back type of option?
I think that will be Hunter. Would like to see SF sign a WR though.
Why does Manning still get rated as the number 2 qb in the league? Over the last 3 years his numbers are 5th behind Brady, Rodgers, Brees and Rivers. He's overrated at this point
I don't agree. I always say there are 6 Elite QBs. Those five you mentioned and Big Ben. If I had to rank them, Rodgers would be first. Rivers would be 6th. Ben would be 5th. Brees 4th. And picking between Manning and Brady is a total coin flip for me.
Oh..."Dreamer" by Ozzy right now
When the lockout ends there will be a free agent frenzy...does that give a team like the Bills a better chance to sign someone that may not have thought to go there otherwise?
There will be total chaos and yes it will be an amazing frenzy. Can't wait. Anyways, why would such a thing help the Bills? Not following your logic Bro.
Hey Matt, back to A Rodgers. Who would you compare him to (if anyone). i just cant remember anyone who had the velocity and accuracy he has?
He throws the ball remarkably well. There have been others comparable though for sure. Marino, Elway, etc. But Rodgers is also an amazing foot athlete. Like Elway I suppose, but I do remember Elway as being even more gifted than AR.
who is your title game pick for the afc and nfc so far?
Oh boy. Let free agency happen first! But if I were to do an NFL Power Rankings right now, I would go: 1. GB 2. NEng 3. NOrls 4. PGH 5. Indy or ATL
Thoughts on Daniel Thomas, the alleged #1 RB for the Fish... Keep up the good work and thanks for the chat!
Good vision. Runs a little high and will take some hits. Powerful though. Good burst. Can run away from defenders. Looks like a true lead back at this level. But MIA will sign someone of prominence to add to the mix.
The Boss..."The River"
Not much time for players to weigh options and play the field...highest bidder wins.
Might be right. And there most likely will be a floor that every team has to spend-which could make some teams that usually hang back be more aggressive with their offers.
Live version of "The River"
Gronk emerged as Brady's go to TE late in the season, after Hernandez dropped off a bit. Will this situation play out like the RB's in NE, where the matchup will determine who is getting the ball?
I think so. That is the beauty of what NEng is doing right now. Can just attack a D in SO many different ways now. I also think Hernandez wasn't all that healthy at the end of the season.
In Buffalo, nobody seems to care for Donte Whitner, but elsewhere around the league, he's held in high regard (ESPN bloggers ranked him #7 out of all safeties in the NFL). What's your take on him, and where could he end up next season?
Not a Top 10 safety. But a good player who had a good season. More SS than FS, but he is very fast. I expect him to change teams, as George Wilson is also a pretty good player too.
With the chiefs saying they want to use McCluster more as a running back, do they use him like the chargers used sproles?Or is it better to keep him in the slot?
More like NOrls uses Bush. Equal parts RB and WR. Can't give McC a ton of carries-he is REALLY little. I love him as a slot guy most-Welker type. We will see how often they actually hand him the football. But like guys like Bush, McC will make the D pick and count him as either a WR or a RB. If they use light fast personnel, you run it. If you use heavier personnel, you throw and detach him.
would you rather have andre johnson or troy polamalu?
Andre J. Just because of the durability concerns. Both are the best at their respective position though.
Who will be the better pro: Luck or Newton?
Haven't studies Luck, but I will take Luck.
Ok that's fine to say they are all the same. But going into this season, Manning is not the 2nd best qb in the league and he hasnt been over the last 3 seasons. The numbers are really not close at all, if you took the names off you would say his are by far the worst. My point being he is living on reputation right now
I don't think he is at all. I think Manning is one of the best three football players on the planet right now.
Which QB is going to make the biggest leap in improvement next season? Josh Freeman seems like a prime candidate to be even better than last year.
He sure does, but I will take M Stafford.
Accurate to say that hybrid players like Reggie Bush/McCluster etc. help their offenses more with how they influence the defensive packages than their actual production?
Extremely well said. I seem to always be defending Bush in this regard. And-if used properly like he is in NOrls-that is exactly the case as you mentioned. Those guys (% TEs like Dallas Clark too) are just so tough to account for when you have a great cerebral QB who can consistently get his team into winning situations pre-snap. Back to Manning. That is what he is best at. And last year, he had ZERO running game and didn't have Clark in order to properly manipulate defenses.
Will Chad Henne be the Miami Dolphins QB to start and finish the upcoming season.
I do think so. Surrounding him with serious talent. Making it easy on him. And I agree with that strategy. Give him this year-make or break.
Would Chester Taylor 1 yr deal be a good idea for the Colts if they can't sign Addai? He would be an insurance against a Donald Brown flop.
Good in blitz pickup and good receiver and yes, Chicago's OL was awful last year. But Taylor was horrible. Horrible.
When are the Rams going to get a showdog for Bradford? The current WRs on the roster are just good enough to get you beat...
Surprised that they have taken such a quantity over quality approach myself.
Is Julius Peppers the best defensive player in the league?
No. He was excellent last season, but I would take Revis. Would probably take Troy P, Harrison, Matthews, Ware, Ngata over Peppers too. Maybe some others.
Does Crabtree ever live up to his potential? I'm starting to think he's going to be a flash in the pan, a small flash.
This is a pivotal year-and I think Crabtree steps up. Harbaugh's WCO is perfect for him. Get it to him quick. Let him do something after the catch. Be big and physical. But I certainly understand your concern! Pivotal season in his career.
Stevie Johnson future superstar?
Not buying it. Nice player. But after the league really found out who he was, he slowed down late in the season. Ideal #2 WR, but Buff doesn't have that luxury. Again, good player-but I have some doubts that he can put up huge numbers when he is the focal point of the D.
Why does Brian Orakpo get so overlooked? He has to be one of the most underrated players in the league! I won't ask you to rank them...'cause that's stupid...
Heck of a pass rusher. Struggled vs. the run. He does get overlooked a bit. Probably a top 10 3-4 OLB.
Is it wrong to call Brady and all of his accomplishments a product of Bill Belichick's system?
Yes. That would be wrong.
How good can the lions be? Is their defense going to be as good as advertised up front?
Oh I think so on that DL! But let's see what they do in free agency (Nnamdi?). That Back 7 needs a TON of work.
Where is the ideal place for Fat Al to land outside of DC?
HAS to be a 4-3. STL? CHI? DEN?
Dominique Foxworth recently wrote that Ngata has shed 20 lbs. during the offseason, to be even quicker..he may enter the freakest athlete convo...
He certainly might enter that convo. Amazing physical specimen. Tremendous football player too-and only getting better. Could be a much better pass rusher with less weight.
Brady,Montana are both just system QBs(rolling eyes and sarcastic smirk)
Nice! Sure, systems help-a LOT. But their greatness is undeniable.
M-Dub if you were in need of a safety which FA would you rather have Weddle or Huff?
Weddle. Huff has had one very good year-and it was during his contract season. His work ethic has been questioned...so that really worries me.
Are there any nose tackles out there in free agency that could land in Kansas City?
To me, A Franklin from SF is the only true 3-4 NT in free agency to get excited about. SF needs to keep him. Lots of rumors of Franklin to Wash. But KC does have a lot of money to spend.
How under appreciated is Antoine Winfield? He's probably the best tackling corner in the league and his coverage is outstanding yet he continues to not be mentioned with Asmougha and Revis. Thoughts?
Well said. Could be a Top 5 CB. Not in Revis/Nnamdi's class, but a great-and under appreciated-player. Just doesn't have the M2M skills of those two.
Depending on free agecy and who goes where, I have the Jets and Chargers in the AFC Championship; and New Oreleans vs the Giants in the NFC Championship. What do you think?
Love the Saints this year. I see the Jets going backwards. Can buy NYG and SD. They prob will not be my picks though.
I agree with the greatness but did Steve Young not come into the same 49er team and win a SB? If Mallett/Brady's heir takes over and is just as successful doesn't that make you question them a little bit?
Young was great though too. Remember, Joe didn't have Rice to throw to his entire career. Still, I do hear your point. Cassel is the example you should have used.
Colts need a WR to be the heir to Reggie Wayne anybody in FA this year that would interest you or just wait to draft next year?
That looks like next year's draft project.
What do you think of 85 possibly going to the Bears? Good fit? Also, how much left in the tank does he have?
As an outsider, he doesn't seem committed to the game. Still has skills, but runs the wrong routes. Doesn't excel after the catch. I do think his route running skills would fit in well with Martz's route tree/scheme. Guess I can handle that match.
"Slow and Easy" Whitesnake
Inday at 5 in your power rankings? I tend not to agree. Although, tough to rank teams prior to FA
Very tough. Said last night on Twitter that I am leaning towards D Carter for my OROY pick. Indy just gets so many injured guys back. And was torn between Indy and Atl for #5.
I think the top 6 QBs are pretty well set, but the next tier is interesting..who do you include in that next 7-11? Romo, Eli, Freeman, Schaub, Ryan, .....?
I call those guys the Franchise QBs. Here is who I've got: Eli, Romo, Vick, Ryan (top of this list), Freeman, Cutler (debatable), Schaub (debatable) and Flacco is very much on the fence for me. Bradford and Stafford will be on this list next year at this time.
do you think brady can still be an elite QB
Bro-Brady was amazing last year. And I very much think he was injured in their playoff loss. Elite. Enough of such talk.
I would place Flacco ahead of Ryan, and Freeman. Dont ya think
Oh no no no.
Regarding NTs, what do you think about Dan Williams in Arizona? He came on strong towards the end of the year.
Love him. Exactly what you need to succeed in the 3-4. Zona's D could be much better next year. Still need to add one pass rusher off the edge.
Looking at the Stats for Barrett Rudd, he has good numbers but yet he's not mentioned as one of the better MLB in the NFL? What is it about his game that doesn't register?
Makes a ton of tackles-but too many downfield. Not enough impact plays. Not overly physical. Average in coverage. Not a blitzer. I think he is a slightly above average 4-3 MLB.
From "Slow and Easy" to..."Please allow me to introduce myself. I am a man of wealth and taste..." Oh Mick. You are sick. Sick I tell ya.
Do you think Stafford's injuries have been kind of fluky (he's not going to be injury-prone?)
From what Docs say, that is the case. Shouldn't have any higher of a % of being injured than the next guy. Has to make you wonder though. He can be amazing though.
Geno Atkins? Starter or just siutational DT pass rusher?
Great situational interior pass rusher who can also be a rotational DT. Just have to be careful on snap count. Up and comer.
Just to get things straight. You like Freeman more than Flacco and Ryan this year or overall going forward?
Right now, I like Ryan 7th. Right outside Elite 6. Right now I like Freeman and Ryan much more than Flacco. Going forward, I would rank them Freeman, Ryan then Flacco.
Instead of breaking the bank on Nnamdi, I'd prefer to see the Eagles get Joseph and LB help.
Understandable. But Joseph will not be cheap either. Should demand the second most CB money. But I do hear ya. Philly with two 30+ expensive CBs might not be good biz.
Are the eagles, texans, and lions the top teams to land ndanmi asomugha? Who would be the best fit, and where does he end up?
Gotta add Dallas and esp Washington into that convo. Any would be great fits. Would love to see him in Det personally.
Thoughts on Robert Gallery adding to the Bears O-Line? With adding him to the 1st round pick, this might help to solidfy this terrible OL and help to make Cutler a elite QB.
Good fit for sure. Better zone blocker than power man OG. Keep hearing Gallery to Sea (With Cable), but they did draft a OG high. I like the Bears fit.
More intimidating: James Harrison or Ray Lewis?
You're obviously not a big Flacco fan--but is he good enough to win in the playoffs someday with all the talent around him?
Not a Flacco basher either. Like I said, on the fence with him if he is a Franchise QB or not. That isn't crushing the guy. Still should get better. Want to see him handle the rush better. And yes, he will win playoff games.
Flyers are retooling. We are coming for you.
Jagr will be back in town here.
The Who "Love Reign O'er Me"....classic that I haven't heard in a while
What have you seen from Freeman to make you so high on him? He certainly didn't outperform Ryan last year.
No, he didn't. Right now I think Ryan is better. And not betting my rep that Freeman passes him. That is a tough call. But I would take Freeman going forward. A little younger. Much more physically gifted. Tough as nails. More of a natural playmaker. Again-tough call and Ryan is the better player today.
How many more rings does Roethlisberger need for Canton? Or is he already there?
Already there assuming he has a few more productive seasons.
Will GB try to resign C. Jenkins? If not, who will fill in?
Who knows, but it doesn't sound like they will. I would though if I were GBay. He will be very expensive, but he isn't replaceable for them. GBay will play more and more of their 2-4-5 with Jenkins gone, but I think he is one guy you resign for another title run.
Thinking about top guards..does it go Nicks, Sitton, Mankins, Evans?
Good list. I think I would take Mankins first though and probably Evans 2nd. Tough. Snee is a fav of mine too. Feel like I am missing someone though. Not quite there, but Moore with the Jets is a great one too.
Who see the field more this season: Locker or Ponder?
Ponder. Opening day starter.
The Raiders have to resign Miller, don't they?
Gotta. Priority #1
Think Owen Daniels will retunr to his form of 2 years ago? He looked good late last year.
He sure did-and yes. Expecting a huge season from Daniels if he stays healthy.
4th and 6 driving with the game on the line: who is the your ideal QB?
Game is today? Right now. Brady.
More likely I see Michael Bush or DeAngelo in blue and orange?
Esp Bush. Bush actually is very similar to Thomas.
Jim Brown or Sweetness? (Yes, we're at this point in the chat.)
At the end of the 2011 season, Watkins will be in the top 10 OGs. Book it!
I might be on your side with that. Exceptional addition to that OL. Love it.
Listening to your QB preferences, it seems that you place big arm strength over accuracy (Pro-Freeman, Cutler, Koepernick, Henne (over Sanchez, at least, STILL somehow)). This is over simplifying it, but wouldnt you rather be accurate than strong?
That is a huge factor for me. But Sanchez isn't accurate.
Okay Folks, that is a wrap. I am out. Let's do it again next week. Enjoy your 4th.
