Chat with Terry Blount

Terry Blount
  (2:00 PM)

Hello gang. Been raining most of the day at Daytona, but still hoping to get the track dry for some practice later today.

Daryl (Iowa)

Are their any companies that are not NASCAR sponsors that surprise you? Walmart is an obvious choice, but any others?

Terry Blount
  (2:01 PM)

That's the obvious one, but really, any major company could benefit from NASCAR sponsorship because the sport touches so many aspects of society.

Andy (MD)

Just heard that Smoke may not expand to 3 or 4 car team for next year. Do you agree with that?

Terry Blount
  (2:01 PM)

Expanding may have to wait until 2013, possibly with Danica.

Andy (MD)

Who are your top 5 for Coke Zero 400?

Terry Blount
  (2:03 PM)

Honestly, just about anyopne can win this race with the tandem-style racing. But my top five would be Harvick, Bowyer, Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards and JJ.

Andrew (Kettering Ohio)

Your thoughts on the crewman being fired over the tweet?

Terry Blount
  (2:03 PM)

I think it was the right decision.

Brett (KS)

Any rumblings about who might replace CR on the 17 car?

Terry Blount
  (2:05 PM)

I don't think they know yet. Sponsors leaving is a major concern right now across the board. Even some of the top cars don't have fuill sponsorship. The real answer is a change in the costs of Cup so sponors can make it sensible for them in this economy.

Clint (Dallas, TX)

Any Chance Johnson returns the Favor and Pushes Jr to the WIN!!

Terry Blount
  (2:05 PM)

Sure it's possible, but almost anything is possible in the final laps here Saturday night.

Matthew (Columbia, NJ)

Terry, do you see a crew chief change coming to the 16 team if he doesn't turn it around soon?

Terry Blount
  (2:06 PM)

I don't think that's in the cards this season.

zach(baltimore) [via mobile]

where do you see tony stewart getting his first win this season

Terry Blount
  (2:07 PM)

It wouldn't shock me if he got it here Saturday night.

Brad (Crossville, TN)

Terry, what is the latest word on Carl's contract? And where do you think he should go, and where do you think he will go or stay?

Terry Blount
  (2:08 PM)

I still expect him to stay unless Home Depot offers him a blank check to take that car at JGR. When it's all said and done, it's possible all the big free agents _ Carl, Clint, JPM _ stay where they are.

Andy (MD)

Any chances that Home Depot may leave Logano and go with other team?

Terry Blount
  (2:09 PM)

JGR officials say no. If I were the CEO at HD, I would want a championship contender in the car for all the money I'm spending.

Teri (CA)

Any chance UPS moves over to the 17 since Crown Royal is out next season?

Terry Blount
  (2:10 PM)

It's possible. But again, if I were making the calls at UPS, I'd want Carl.

Eric (Harrisonburg)

I'm going to Kentucky next weekend. What type of track and racing is it going to be similar to?

Terry Blount
  (2:12 PM)

It will be my first trip to Kentucky also, Eric. The track is similar to Kansas, 1.5-mile oval that is relatively flat.

Potamkin (KS)

Does it happen this week....does the 88 win...or is it just to unpredictable at daytona to call?

Terry Blount
  (2:13 PM)

Totally unpredictable, but Junior has as good a chance as anyone and probably better than most. But he dislikes the pairs racing.

Brian (Seattle)

Will Tony Stewart keep his word and punt anyone who tries to block him on Saturday?

Terry Blount
  (2:14 PM)

Of course not. Blocking is part of the drill here because of the yellow-line rule.

Andy (MD)

will 2012 Sprint Cup schedule will be the same as this year? OR any news that the next year's schedule will have little or big changes?

Terry Blount
  (2:15 PM)

No big changes expected. Brian France said last week the sked won't have any significant changes, but a few dates moving a few weeks from where they are now. That's about it.

Billy (Reno)

Is there a point of watching this weeks NW race. Er I mean cup lite race? What a joke. KHI has 4 cup guys (yes I know Sadlers not in Cup at the moment but still).

Terry Blount
  (2:16 PM)

It's always fun to watch here because anyhting can happen. And Danica's in the race. Plus, Trevor Bayne might win the NW race as a follow up to his 500 win.

Jeremy (Port Angeles, WA)

What nationwide series teams are intersted in signing Danica for next year beside Jr Motorsports?

Terry Blount
  (2:17 PM)

Possibly Harvick's team. I'm sure any team is interested because of the sponsorship money that coems with it. It depends if she is interested.

Brad (Crossville, TN)

With that being said, if Carl wins the championship, does he still go for more money or do you think he would be content with winning championships at Roush with a little less pay?

Terry Blount
  (2:18 PM)

That decision will come long before the championship is decided.

Woody (Denver)

Any chance Kasey will be allowed to bolt early from Red Bull and join his new team? If so, how will that affect Mark Martin?

Terry Blount
  (2:19 PM)

Kasey said he would like to get in the 5 car a few times this fall, but only for testing.

Dalton (Vacaville, CA)

I think Gordon gets his 3rd win of the year this weekend. Agree?

Terry Blount
  (2:19 PM)

No, but he's one of the best at this plate stuff, so it could happen.

Scott D. (South Boston, VA)

Awesome article on Bayne. With the way Trevor ran at Daytona and Talladega and the amount of friends on the track he has now, do you think he could sweep Daytona? I would love and would be great for NASCAR

Terry Blount
  (2:22 PM)

It would be special, be it's an awful lot to ask. I think he has a chance to be in the hunt because Trevor has a knack for pushing in this format.

Woody (Denver)

Thanks for the response. Any word on Kenny Francis joining HMS to lord over the 5 car? They seem to have four REALLY good CC's as it is.

Terry Blount
  (2:22 PM)

I think Kasey and Kenny are a package deal.

Ricardo (Phoenix)

if JPM does not make the chase..... how does that affect his signing from both sides?? is he happy with EGR?

Terry Blount
  (2:23 PM)

I really expect this to be settled before the Chase starts. I don't think it has a bearing one way of the other.

Vinnie (ATL)

Is NASCAR looking to curb costs because of lost sponsorship? There have to be engineering changes available to cut costs. F1 dealt with this years ago.

Terry Blount
  (2:26 PM)

They're always looking, but it's easier said than done. F1 has cut costs, but it's a apples/oranges comparison. F1 costs still are much higher than NASCAR, so it was easier to find ways to cut. My ideas are more two-day shows and fewer events. It's very difficult to do this from a tech standpoint compared to F1 because NACAR doesn't use as much advanced technology.

Eric (Missouri)

Terry, to what extent can we attribute Carl's most-unexpected 3rd place finish at Sonoma with his decision to forego the Nationwide race? I keep thinking he's got to be the favorite to de-throne Jimmie.

Terry Blount
  (2:27 PM)

I thought Carl made a great decision to skip the NW race in Wisconsin. That's a logn trip. He focused on the Cup race and I'd like to see him do that a few more tiems this year. Stay fresh and concentrate on the Cup battle.

Scott D. (South Boston, VA)

And then again it would be cool to see Trevor push David Ragan to his first win, and Trevor is the kinda guy that would do that.

Terry Blount
  (2:29 PM)

In the end, it just depends on where you are and what gives you the best chance to finish up front. Bayne would gladly push David until they come off Turn 4. Then it's every man for himself.

Vinnie (ATL)

Any chance NASCAR cuts the field to 36?

Terry Blount
  (2:29 PM)

No, but I think it's a good idea.

Mark (Iowa)

I know this is about Daytona, but I have a comment on road racing. In my opinion it needs to go away, these cars aren't designed for it, they don't usually put on a show and there are ovals who are more deserving of a race than either of the road courses. Your thoughts?

Terry Blount
  (2:31 PM)

I disagree Mark. I thought the Sonoma race was a blast to watch. Sonoma has become the new Bristol with tons of bumping an banging that fans like to see. I fact, I'd love to see Sonoma in the Chase.

Chris (Crestview, FL)

Is Joey Logano going to get screwed if Carl Edwards comes over? It seems like it. Carl will get Home Depot and probably the team and cars. Joey won't really have a sponsor and will end up getting all of the other guys scraps for cars and will have a bunch of new guys on his team.

Terry Blount
  (2:33 PM)

I think Carl is staying at Roush, but if he went to JGR, Joey could be the odd man out. That's the business. Produce or move on down the road.

Vinnie (ATL)

Have there been any changes to the cars that will affect the 2x2 racing we have seen at restrictor plate races this year? For the record, I like it, but it is different.

Terry Blount
  (2:34 PM)

Nothing yet, but the cars havevn't even been on the track yet. I don't expect any major changes. The track will be hotter, which makes it slicker. So it could become more difficult for two cars to stay together.

Larry (MI)

It seems like Tony Jr and Danica get along really well and he has been a good teacher for her. If she does end up at SHR or KHI do you see Tony Jr going too or does his loyalty to Jr keep him a JRM?

Terry Blount
  (2:35 PM)

I think Tony Jr. is staying at JR Motorsports. I hope Danica does because I agree, Tony has been great for her development.

Teri (CA)

I agree with you, Terry. I think the road races are amazing! In fact, I think they are more fun to watch than most of the ovals. There should be one in the chase!

Terry Blount
  (2:35 PM)

It isn't happening any time soon, but road courses are here to stay.

Bill (Richmond)

What is the feeling on JPM in the garages? I love his style (take no prisoners), but it rubbed the old guard the wrong way.

Terry Blount
  (2:36 PM)

Not really. JPM is an aggressive driver, but so are a lot of other guys. Juan is respected in the garage for his driving skills.

Terry Blount
  (2:37 PM)

Kenseth in the MC just said the Crown Royal decision to leave caught him by surprise.

jake (florida)

Terry, What did Dale have to say about the wreck last week?

Terry Blount
  (2:38 PM)

He was pretty calm about it. He just hopes to stay out of the big wreck Saturday.

Chris (Crestview, FL)

Do you see Brian Vickers getting a quality ride next season? Or is he gonna end up driving for a start and park team?

Terry Blount
  (2:38 PM)

I think Vickers will stay where he is if Jay Frye can line up investors. If that fails, Brian doesn't have a lot of quality options.

Chris (Crestview, FL)

Is it going to take hell freezing over for NASCAR to reduce the schedule to 30-32 races and shorten the season?

Terry Blount
  (2:40 PM)

It's going to take a huge shift in philosphy. And it can't happen right now in the middle of a TV contract, which goes through 2014.

Jeff (SC)

I thought that road course they ran in NW was a very cool track. They should add that to the chase. Will Tony Stewart make the chase?

Terry Blount
  (2:41 PM)

I think Tony will make the playoff. And yes, Road America is a great place, but Idon't see NASCAR adding a third road race to the Cup sked.

Vinnie (ATL)

How is Ed Hinton holding up? Thoughts and prayers to him and his family.

Terry Blount
  (2:42 PM)

Thanks for asking Vinnie. Ed is doing well. I attended his wife's memorial service yesterday in Atlanta. It was a wonderful tribute to her. She was a special lady. Ed will be back writing soon.

jake (florida)

Lets shorten the races first.

Terry Blount
  (2:43 PM)

You're preaching to the choir Jake.

John (CA)

Terry, do yout think Elliott Sadler will return to Cup?

Terry Blount
  (2:44 PM)

Not nest year. I think he has a good chance to win the NW title this year and that will help him get back. But where would he go?

Brian (Seattle)

The weather forecast in Daytona doesn't look too good for the next couple of days. Could we see all practices and qualifying rained out, and both the NW and Cup races run on Saturday?

Terry Blount
  (2:46 PM)

It's typical to rain part of the day here in the summer, but usually, it's not a consistent rain. Just passing showers. So it rare if they can't get the practice sessions and races completed. However, delays are not unusual.

mike (morgantown)

Terry: Do you think Pat Tryson will help the 47 be more competitive or is the problem Bobby Labonte.

Terry Blount
  (2:47 PM)

Pat's a smart guy so his input is bound to help. Bobby may not be the driver he was 10 years ago, but he's still pretty darn good.

Jimmy (STL)

What do you see in store for the ECR bunch this weekend? I know the Fords have the cooling down better than anyone but do the Chevys look good?

Terry Blount
  (2:48 PM)

The Chevys will be competitive, but you made a good point. The new Ford engines seem to be able to line up longer in the pairs racing without swapping spots because of overheating.

Drew (Bloomington, Ind.)

I disagree with the notion IndyCar can't survive without Danica. Marco won at Iowa, Hildebrand ran strong again, and Graham Rahal has put together a couple solid finishes at Ganassi Lite. Don't overlook James Hinchcliffe either. Case in point, there are plenty of young drivers who can become stars in place of Danica.

Terry Blount
  (2:50 PM)

INdy car needs Marco to keep winning. And Rahal running well also helps. No one is Danica in terms of the attention she generates, but IndyCar can thrive it some of the better known young drivers continue to do well.

Vinnie (ATL)

Watched a special on the History Channel regarding the Flock brothers. Ever heard of them?

Terry Blount
  (2:51 PM)

You're not a true NASCAR fan if you have heard of the Flock brothers. And the real fans even know about the monkey!

Chad (GA)

I heard that MWR is adding a Grand Am team to there operations in 2012 what kind of impact if any will that have on the cup side?

Terry Blount
  (2:52 PM)

Not much, if any. But I'm glad to see them growing and expanding the overall operation.

Chris (Crestview, FL)

How worried is NASCAR about the sponsorship issue? At what point does it get to where the lack of sponsorships start to impact the sport as a whole? Are we almost there?

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

NASCAR officials always have concerns when major sponors leave the sport, but sponsors come and go. NASCAR is doing all it can to bring new sponors and new fans to the sport. We were briefed today on a major research project NASCAR recently completed to improve it's outreach in every area. But all pro sports are trying to weather the storm in difficult economic times.

Eric (Missouri)

Terry, nobody who acted like an idiot on the track Sunday at Sonoma finished with a top-10. Were you surprised to see some of the big names get mired in the stupidity instead of focusing on a good points day?

Terry Blount
  (2:57 PM)

Nothing surprises me when tempers flare on the track. And the Chase still is far enough away that drivers don't focus on points entirely.

Brad (Crossville, TN)

I am only 27 years old and I know about the monkey. Funny story. But so were a lot of other stories from back in the day.

Terry Blount
  (2:58 PM)

Like Smokey Yunick driving the car away after NASCAR inspectors pulled off the gas tank, although that is a bit of an urban legend. But it's a funny story.

jake (florida)

How much has the last two weeks hurt Dale's confidence?

Terry Blount
  (2:59 PM)

None at all. Road races never have been his strength. He knows his team is much better than it was a year ago.

John (VA)

What would Jr. do if he got dumped like Vickers?

Terry Blount
  (3:00 PM)

Probably call Vickers a bunch of unprintable names.

Terry Blount
  (3:00 PM)

Gotta run folks. Lots of driver interviews this afternoon. Enjoy the race Saturday night. Peace.
