Yeah, it's that time. Per the results of our weekly Twitter contest, the first question this week is a Cowboys question.
Skip Bayless just said on First Take that DeMarcus Ware disappears and has too many games where you can't tell he is on the field. He went on to pick Julius Peppers, who mails it in every other year, and Clay Matthews over Ware in his top 5 defensive players. Is it possibile for Skip to actually believe this or is it just to make for discussion/"compelling" TV?
Wrong guy to ask, Mike. I have Peppers over Ware, too. As well as Revis and some other guys. I think Ware is great and Peppers is better. I can't speak to Skip's question of Ware's game-to-game motivation, and I agree with you that Peppers looked unmotivated in his final season in Carolina. But he was motivated in his first year with the Bears, and there weren't many better or higher-impact defensive players in 2010 than Peppers.
Do you think the Redskins might try to trade McNabb and Haynesworth in a package, to get a better value?
I guess maybe, but I'm not sure it'd have that effect. I think there are more teams out there in the Haynesworth market than there are in the McNabb market, so tying McNabb to Haynesworth might actually hurt their chances of getting top value for Big Al. My guess is they take whatever they can get for McNabb and then shop Al around.
Who do you think gets 2nd most sacks in the nfc east this year (assuming ware gets the most)
Last year Mike Vick took a lot of hits due to the weak Philadelphia O-Line. Don't you think they need Kolb? Or did they do enough to improve the line that Kafka will do?
If they deal Kolb, it'll be because somebody compensated him as though he were a starting QB. And if that happens (which it appears it will), the Eagles will be in the market for a veteran with at least some experience who can step in if/when Vick gets hurt.
Dan, in your article, you said the Eagles/Giants was best rivalry in the NFC East? To quote S Sabol "The Cowboys/Skins rivalry is one of the best in the NFL. " I realize you live in Jersey but C'mon man, get with it. Please for the sake of your NFC East fans! You gotta know the history of this division better than that.
I do know the history. But right now, given the state of the rivalry, the importance of the games, the way the players on each team feel about the other team, Eagles-Giants is the best rivalry in the division at this moment.
Dan, belated Happy Fourth of July! Do you feel the Giants will stick with Matt Dodge as their punter, or might they go in a different direction?
Ha! I see what you did there, Al. A "direction" joke about Matt Dodge, who's not so good with the directional kicking. Very funny. Anyway, I think they go into the season with Dodge, on whom they spent a draft pick in 2010. But I don't think they give him another full season if he doesn't show improvement.
Which free agent LB's best fit the giants?
If I were them, I'd sign a middle LB like Stephen Tulloch and move Goff to the outside. But if they're committed to Goff in the middle, I don't know...Manny Lawson?
Do you think the Jets will try to go after Haynesworth? The Jets need a big man and I think Haynesworth would be better suited with a "players' coach."
But the Jets run a 3-4, right? And the source of Al's discontent in Washington was that he wanted to play in a 4-3. So I don't see that as a fit.
The Dallas Cowboys won more games the 2nd half of last season as more of a run-oriented offense with Jon Kitna. Do you think Garrett will keep the offense that way with Tony Romo coming back this season?
I think he should. I have no idea if he will.
There were whispers about Marty Mornhinwheg being considered for HC by some teams due to his work with Vick. If the Eagles offense is great this season, do the Eagles lose him?
Yes. I think he's high on a lot of people's lists, and with good reason.
How much better do you think the Skins' pass rush will be with Kerrigan opposite Orakpo?
Yeah, I think it'll be terrifying. I actually think, if they make one or two more moves, the Redskins aren't far from fielding a better than respectable defense. But they need to add some D-line pieces to make sure those pass-rushers have room to attack. And they still need a cornerback.
Why should the cowboys be more run oriented when they have Dez Miles, and Roy, it was the pass protection that was lacking you need to work with your teams strengths and Dallas can sling the ball especially with Romo's ability to extend the play!
Well, because their backs are also very good. And when you commit to the run, you have a better chance to control the game. It's more reliable. Assuming you really do commit to it.
If you had to make a preseason pick for both offensive and defensive NFC East MVPs, at this point, who would your gut picks be?
Tony Romo and Nnamdi Asomugha. (Pauses, makes sure chat doesn't explode. Continues.)
Do you think Shanahan is done if he stinks it up this year? (I kid, I kid)....Seriously though: You did a lot on the free agency picture. In your opinion, what's the biggest of the many holes the Skins have coming into this year?
Ah, thanks for the chuckle, Luke. I say nose tackle.
Why do you dislike Tiki so much? I do not either, and I doubt he will make a roster at 36 and the guaranteed full year veterans minimum price tag, but the man was easily a top 5 back in his last two seasons in the league, you could show some respect for that.
Tony Romo, top 10 QB?? better than Eli?
I think that's a real close call, Romo vs. Eli. I take Romo by a hair. We've discussed this before.
So glad to see you post the latest Pro Football Focus piece, which, for those that chose shamefully to disregard the links Dan works so hard on every morning, finally had the courage to say what I?ve been saying all along?that Trent Cole is the best 4-3 DE in the league. Booyah! Since we can safely assume that you agree with this assessment, maybe you can tell me why Cole never gets brought up with names like Peppers, Allen and Mario Williams? Is it just because those guys are better "pure pass rushers" (read: one dimensional players that take snaps off against the run), is it because they make more money, or is it a conspiracy that goes all the way to the top of the NFL? Also, that means the rest of the division's DEs (especially the Giants) are all officially overrated n soft, right?
My taking this question does not constitute an endorsement of all of the assertions contained in it. For instance, I do not think there is any kind of conspiracy at work, and I'm not calling anyone overrated or soft. (Though yes, I do get the reference.) As for Cole, though. I think I'd still take Tuck, and certainly Peppers and probably Mario Williams. But he's got to be in the discussion. He's a little new to the discussion, relative to those others, which may be the answer to your question. But he belongs in it. He's a stud.
What is the Best & the Worst NFL Stadium that you have been to?
The Cowboys' new stadium is unlike anything I've ever seen and is probably the most stunning sporting venue I've been to. Before that, I'd have probably said Lambeau Field for the history and the experience of being there. As for worst...tough to say, though the Louisiana Superdome isn't a very pleasant place to watch a game.
Do you think the Redskins have a chance to convince the Bengals to trade Carson Palmer and Chad OchoCinco for Donovan Mcnabb?
Any East under-the-radar defensive players that you think will take a step toward elite status this year?
How about Antonio Dixon in Philly?
What are the chances the Redskins roll with the NT that is actually suited to eat up blockers in the 3-4 (Anthony Bryant, 376 lbs), then give big money to a 30 year old 4-3 NT that lacks the needed bulk (Aubrayo Franklin, 317 pounds). If they wanted a small guy like that, they could just go with newly drafted Jarvis Jenkins, who like Franklin, is known for his strength and ability to hold the point of attack.
I guess it depends what they want, and how sold they are on Bryant as an every-down starter. Franklin has interior O-line experience and versatility. But yeah, if they like Bryant enough they could beef up at the ends, add a CB and maybe an ILB and go with him. Your logic is sound.
Do you believe that the Giants need to go after a free agent LB, or would you like to see them turn the rookies and other young players loose?
I believe they need to go after a free-agent LB. I believe they needed to do so last year as well. But they didn't. So now I really believe it.
Well, who do you think the Redskins starting QB will be next year? I thought Carson Palmer had a chance.
I don't think they spend resources to get Palmer when they may need them to move up in next year's draft and pick the guy they can build around for the future. I think it's going to be Beck in 2011.
Is Stewart Bradley the starting MLB in Philly? I'd love to see the guy healthy...
He could be an unrestricted free agent if they go back to a four-year rule. But if he stays, the Eagles have said they'd like to keep him in the middle and move Chaney outside.
hey chris, top 3 running back in the east?
Hey, Pete. McCoy, Bradshaw, Jacobs.
Hey Dan, what is the possibility of the Birds getting LeSean McCoy a good backup? My candidate is Steve Slaton. Your thoughts?
I think they like Jerome Harrison as the backup, but he could be a free agent, and if he leaves, they'll be on the hunt for one. Slaton is a nice name. Could be a fit, sure.
Which NFL stadium is your absolute fave? Are you kidding me? Can you maybe tackle some football questions and quit batting around this kiddie crap that makes your job pathetically easy?
I mean, I can't write the questions myself, right?
Dan, am I being unreasonable to be asking for the type of contract that Chris Canty and Rocky Bernard are getting? I know we all play the same position, but I think Reese feels that my stats are better because I only have a guard to worry about, whereas Chris or Rocky takes on a guard & center most of the time.
I don't think you're being unreasonable, and I think some team will give you the contract you're looking for. But I don't think it'll be the Giants, who seem to have pegged your value somewhat lower than you have and made some plans to move on.
Dan, what's your best piece you have wrote?
When I was covering the Olympics in Athens in 2004, I walked the marathon route and wrote it first-person for The Star-Ledger. I liked that one. But it hurt.
Do you think the Eagles can really get Nnamdi?
Well, yeah. Sure. Why not?
Would Quintin Mikell and Abram Elam make a good safety pair for the Cowboys?
Yes, but I think they're probably bringing back Sensabaugh and will therefore only be looking for one top FA safety.
Who screens the questions to see what is put up and who answers them?
Me. And me.
Hey Dan love the blog thanks for the work u put in! As a giant fan in Kansas, ok left scratching my head as to how bad the giants are struggling against the eagles. What are two or three things you think the giants need to do to be on par the iggles and get our first win in three years against them?
Limit turnovers, beef up at linebacker, contain Vick and McCoy (i.e., limit the huge plays). But mainly, I think it's the turnovers.
Which NFC East team is most hurt by the lockout? As a Philly fan I think it's the Eagles because of how young their team is.
I think it's the Redskins because they had the most work to do.
Excluding Kolb, which Beast team has the best strength at backup QBs?
Based on the second half of 2010, I believe I'd have to say Dallas. Even INcluding Kolb.
If all things fall into place what chance do you give the Redskins of catching up to the aging Giants and underachieving Cowboys?
They had the same record as the Cowboys last year, so, not sure how they "catch up." As for the Giants...I think NY would really have to fall apart, but we have seen that happen. I say 23 percent chance.
Im tired of all the talk about Skins tanking the season to get a good QB. Is it a good idea for them to have a respectable 8-8 season or better and use a lot of ammunition to trade up in the draft for a good QB? What do you think they should do if they have a decent season but dont have QB of the future on their roster?
Trade up and make sure and get one of the top QBs. But yes, I think the talk of "tanking" is insane. This isn't the NBA.
you'd take Jacobs over Felix Jones at this stage in their careers. Felix hasn't lived up to potential with the injuires, but has flashed brilliance at times and he'll only be 24 next season
Yeah, I was probably basing that answer more on 2010 performance. And I wrestled with it. I don't think it'd take much to talk me into picking Jones over Jacobs for 2011.
Abram Elam used to play for the Cowboys but he couldn't beat out Pat Watkins or KEith Davis...i doubt Elam's on the radar....unless he's on the cheap.
Well, he's obviously improved since then...
I've been a Redskins fan all my life and I'm getting tired of other Redskins fans questioning the QB situation. I was too young to remember Gibbs' first go around, but this is the first time I feel that our head coach is our guy. This is going to be the guy that gets it done for us. John Beck is our QB. Having him our QB is a win/win situation. Redskins fans need to realize that. If John Beck leads the Redskins to a 9 win season then he's our QB for the short future, but if he doesn't then in he 2012 NFl Draft the Redskins select Luck/Landry/Barkley.Thoughts?
Brendan, you're too darn reasonable for this chat. You're making too much sense.
Do you think I'd be able to snag Doug Free in Free Agency under the proposed new rules? I think he'd be a good fit and first step in pre emptively rebuilding this O-line.
You could, but that's not your style. And if you did, you'd surely be losing one or more from the Bradshaw/Kiwanuka/Smith/Boss group to do it. So you know and I know, Jerry, that you won't be doing that.
Vince Young to the Redskins...sit behind Beck until he's comfortable with the offense, use our first round pick next year to go after a defensive player, such as a CB. Agreed?
No. Redskins don't need to be adding baggage.
Do you think the Redskins or the Eagles have a better chance of getting Nnamdi Asomugha, and who needs him more?
They need him equally, as they each have a major hole to fill at CB. The Eagles have a better chance to get him, since I believe he'd like to play for a contender. And the Redskins are not currently perceived as a contender by potential free agents.
Dan, I generally dont get fired up about peoples opinions on player rankings and rating but Peppers over Ware is crazy....I have not heard a single good argument for it. Can you explain your reasoning?
I have. So many times. Including earlier in this chat, which you must have read, right? Or else why would you be asking? I think they're both fantastic. I think Peppers is harder to block. I think the impact Peppers had on that Bears' defense last year was massive. I don't think Ware has had the same effect on those who play around him.
McNabb to Carolina. Your thoughts?
I think they have enough QBs on that roster. But the hot name there is Billy Volek from the Chargers because of his connection with Ron Rivera. He'd be the guy who could play until Newton was ready, I think.
Can't believe I'm about to go a Beast chat without getting a question in. You don't like my question or something?Of all the current Beast potential free agents, name one player that would benefit from a shorten FA period and one player that would not?
It's a fine question. I just don't know the answer. Got to think about it. Send it to the mailbag and I'll do a whole post on it. That make you happy?
Don't you think the Skins should sign Moss and develop the receviers they drafted?
Given what's on the WR market, yes.
Mark my words Dan. Tony Romo will have a HUGE year and the Cowboys will win the NFCEast.
Which tandem will have more sacks next season? Kerrigan/Orakpo or Ware/Spencer
Ware/Spencer, though I like the question. I'll take the Cowboys' duo on the chance that Rob Ryan coaches something out of Spencer and Kerrigan needs a little bit of time to adjust to the LB spot.
forgot about Tuck/Osi?
No, I remember them.
Hey Dan, your rating of Mario Manningham as best hands in the division last week created a lot of controversy. Would you care to explain your decision?
Believe there was a link in that post to a statistical study that showed Manningham ranked among the best in the league at catching catchable passes.
Is Moss open to returning to the Redskins?
Seems eager, based on what I've read.
Can you please explain what Giants plan to do in there defensive back field. Deon Grant, Kenny Phillips, Antrel Rolle, Aaron Ross, Terrell Thomas, Corey Webster, and first round pick Prince Amukamara all justly deserve playing time. But there is simply not enough room on the field for all of them.
Yeah, but the Giants are good at rotating guys, so I wouldn't worry about the CBs all getting enough time. I think Grant is the odd man out, and I think the addition of Amukamara means you'll see fewer three-safety looks than you saw last year.
What do you think the Eagles do if Stewart Bradley leaves as a FA?
Play Chaney in the middle, sign an OLB like Lawson.
Dan, I know you think you "call it the way you see it", but it is so unbelievalbly obvious that you hate the Cowboys. Jacobs over Felix, Peppers over Ware. Wow!!!
It's true. You got me. I hate them. There's no chance that I'm basing these "picks" on objective analysis. The only possible explanation is an irrational hatred of an NFL team. I am hereby exposed. Thanks, Mac. I finally feel free to be me.
Does anyone else realize that our team will always be the same under Andy Reid? Somewhere between 9 and 11 wins, maybe a first round victory, then a second round loss because of some fundamental flaw...like QB who chokes or lack of secondary. Are there any moves the Eagles make in the offseason that take them past upper middle class?
First, I think a lot of teams would sign up for the between-9-and-11-wins-every-year deal. But the problem the past two years is that the defense has crumbled late. And as simple as it sounds, they need to add personnel. If they get a stud CB and make a tweak or two at LB and D-line, they can make a deep playoff run. Their offense is certainly good enough. It's defense that has sunk them at the end of the past two seasons.
Think I will get in trouble with the league for having Romo, Jason and a few other Cowboys over from a game of beach football?
No, I don't see how.
Talk of possibly losing Kevin Boss disturbs me. Any likelihood of that happening?
Yeah, I think there is, especially with all of the other FAs the Giants need to address. He's a pretty useful guy, and I think the Giants are counting on the idea that other teams won't think he's as useful as they do. But it only takes one, and if his price goes too high, they'll lose him for sure.
Do you think Pryor can be the future of the Skins? How high do you consider drafting him if you're Shanny, or do you think he'd be a better fit in the NFL as a WR... which they also need.
From everything I've read/heard/been told, he's an NFL receiver, not quarterback. What I wrote over the weekend was that the Redskins were the only NFC East team that should think about spending a pick on him, since they offer two potential avenues for him to get playing time and develop -- at QB and WR. But I don't think, given the current state of the Redskins' franchise, that I'd spend anything more than, say, a sixth-rounder on him. Doesn't seem worth it.
Dan are you ever going to answer my question about how i feel that you feel about the eagles letting desean walk next year in free agency? or are you just going to ignore it? and now ill wait for the smart remark thank you
I think there's a real good chance they let him walk. I think they think Maclin can be a real No. 1 WR. Rosenhaus in the mix doesn't bode well for a deal. And I don't see the Eagles addressing it now, with so many other needs.
Do you need anything from the mall?
Yes, but the same article showed Jason Avant was at the top of the league in catching balls over a longer period. Was one bad game versus the Giants last year enough to drop him?
This is on Manningham again, right? I don't think I "dropped" anybody. I picked a name. Manningham has great hands. Are Avant's better? Lots of people wrote in to say they thought so. Everybody's entitled to his/her opinion. You got mine. I had some numbers to back it up. I could be wrong. It's happened before.
Thunder Dan!!! Once the lockout ends, do you see FA being a crazy 1 week period, or will we see teams sign players through out camp and into late August?
No, I think it's going to be freaking insane. I'm taking extra vitamins just to be ready.
Hey, we're over time here, folks. I'm taking...two more.
If I'm in the hot seat after being here 7 seasons and winning one SB, where is Andy Reid after 12 seasons and no SB wins yet? Is he sitting onto a active volcano?
Just don't think "SB wins" is the only way to judge a coach, Tom. And I don't think Jeff Lurie thinks so either. Reid's been kicking your butt for three years now. His record is incredible. I think he's got more job security than you do right now. Fair or not.
What will training camp be like with a race against time till the preseason?
I hope it's like the last 45 minutes of "Inception."
All right, I'm out. Remember, I love each of you exactly as much as is appropriate -- no more, no less. I just hate your team. Whichever one it is.
