Hey, all. Let's get started.
When do the teams start practicing for the fall season? Also, what do you think the typical day entails for the players and coaches right now as they prepare for the season? I'm desperate for some football! Thanks
Camps start the first week of August. Right now, players just do early-morning conditioning work with some other voluntary (by name only) workouts later in the day. And plenty of guys are taking summer classes, too.
Do you see any of the Texas Tech wide receivers becoming Seth Doege's clear number 1 target? If so, who?
Well, Alex Torres makes a lot of sense now that he's healthy. He's probably the safe bet, but you can't rule out juco transfer Marcus Kennard. He's got plenty of buzz heading into camp.
Will the Big XII one day expand back to 12 teams, or do you see them staying at 10?
I don't see them expanding unless teams consistently get left out of the national championship, which I don't think will happen. Although, things could change quickly if this Texas A&M and SEC stuff picks up some steam. Still a lot has to happen for that to occur, but you can't rule anything out just yet.
College sports have never gone through labor strife because players don't have union representation. Juxtapose that with all the labor strife that professional sports have done through the last few years. I know it seems pie in the sky but what if high school basketball and football players unionized to hold out for more benefits?
INteresting question, but it'll never happen for lots of reasons, chief among them there are too many players and not enough organization within those players, unlike the NFL and NBA, which have organized players.
David - What kind of odds d you give the Cats vs. the Canes? Will it be close?
They've got a decent chance. K-State is kind of a wild card heading into the season, and if they win that, they'll earn a lot of respect.
How likely is it that the Longhorn Network causes problems with the NCAA rules on recruiting with broadcasting games and interviews of high school students?
There's going to be a lot of conversations about that in the future, but folks on both sides are going to have to get definite answers about how it fits into the NCAA rules, or if rules need to be altered before it actually happens.
Little Shipley for real this year?
I'm going to buy on that one, if for no other reason than Texas' receivers leave a lot to be desired.
DU - great having you back - let's get this party rolling. I'm hearing all the jabber about Christine this, Malcolm that, blah blah. Howz my man Herschel Sims going to do?
Might get a few touches, but OSU's backfield is pretty loaded for now. Will be tough to make a huge impact.
Dave, caught CFB Live yesterday and they said Mr.Fleming was on campus and expects to suit up for the Sooners. Is this is a done deal? Or is Jamel simply being optimistic and has some more work to do before officially rejoining the team? Also, any word on Metoyer's eligibility? Thanks
No, it's official. Oklahoma confirmed it a week or so ago. Fleming is back. Metoyer is still up in the air, but his dad sounds like he's confident he's on the right track. I'd expect him to qualify.
Dave, have you played NCAA 12 yet? I know you already put Nebraska back in the Big XII since you miss us so much.
Yes and yes. (Left out the Buffs, though.) 11-team conferences, they work!
Home or hotel for media days??
Come on, now. It's going down about 15 minutes from my apartment.
David,Who do you think is the most irreplaceable player in the conference? Go Pokes!
Justin Blackmon. OSU's trip to Manhattan agrees.
You once said Texas "saved" the Big12-2, now it seems their greed is ripping it apart. How does ESPN want you to spin that?
Can't both be true? I don't think it's possible to deny that the Longhorn Network is currently not helping the Big 12's health.
If the Aggies are so concerned with the Longhorn Network, why don?t the start their own? I mean, they are just as conceited as the Longhorns are?might as well follow their lead, right?
For what it's worth, I think Texas A&M would have an easier time making and maintaining a network than Oklahoma would.
David, why are you so nice to me even though I asked the same stupid question that people ask every chat??
Texas A&M has recently injected some relevance into that question.
Big12 just announced their All Big12 teams, only one OkieLite OL, what say you?
They released them just before the chat started, but I had a few gripes. Will have a post this afternoon.
Any word on if Sheldon Richardson will play for Mizzou this year?
Missouri says it still believes he'll be there for fall camp. We'll see. No strong indication one way or the other, and from what I've heard, he's gone quiet to the St. Louis media, among others, which he usually is open with.
What are you doing during fall camp/two a days? Will you be visiting practices?
Maybe a couple, but not a ton. We really don't travel too much during the preseason. Last year, I only went to Texas A&M and Baylor.
I know the pickings are a bit slim after Mizzou, but Texas over Baylor or Texas Tech? Why?
Upside. Baylor and Texas Tech are good teams, but their ceilings aren't high enough to win the Big 12. Texas' obviously is.
Ain't fair... I haven't even moved my stuff in yet and the pressure is on. I racked up 1700 yards last season in high school, but those college LB's are fast and nasty and the DB's can knock your head off. Will I rank in the top 5 Big 12 RB's this season? Will I break 1,000 yards?
I'm going to say no and no. And yes, it's not fair. Brown's dealing with expectations that I'd argue no one else in the league has to face.
Hey Ubs i've never been a huge fan of Tannehill being the QB for A&M. I've always felt he was a much better WR than QB. What are your thoughts on this and any chance Manziel takes over the starting job? That senior curse hasn't been good to us Aggies lately...
I don't get this at all. I hear from people who aren't sold on Tannehill all the time. I don't understand it. What do you guys want? he got the job done with almost no experience during the toughest part of A&M's schedule. He'll be solid, and it's a bit ludicrous to suggest he'll be benched for anyone, much less a true freshman. Jerrod didn't play poorly as much as he was injured. There's a difference.
Do you think K-State's players will do any sort of salute in honor of last year's ridiculous call to throw it in the face of the refs this year now that they're allowed to? Or would that be an organized celebration?
Ha, that would be awesome. I'd support it.
But generally, I'm more pro-celebration that the majority of other writers, I think. As long as you don't direct a celebration at an opponent, I'd like to see anything go.
Do you have a list of games that you'll be attending this year?
Nope, we usually decide on Saturday or Sunday the week before. Week 1 isn't even set yet. We usually unveil where we're going on Thursday of game week.
With all the unknowns surrounding Bryce Brown, how did he make it onto the the media's All-Big 12 team?
Because the second running back spot on the All-Big 12 has no clear player that deserves it. I wrote awhile back that you could make a case for literally about 7-8 guys.
Have you seen my new TV lately? I think we should have a showdown on NCAA '12 to break it in...
Well, if I didn't get to Ames last year during the season, playing some NCAA on Iowa State's new jumbotron would certainly do the trick.
What's with the NCAA 12 game demos????? Boise State over A&M?! Come on now David, Cyrus Michael would run all over them!!!!!
So would Adrian Peterson. Oh, wait...
Do you actually have Aggies questioning if Tanehill is qualified? I have yet to speak to a fellow Aggie that feels that way, so if you have, I'd have to call troll.
Not many Aggies. Mostly opposing fans who think he's very overrated. I disagree strongly. I think he's overshadowed by three really good QBs in the Big 12 who are better than him.
Has Malcolm Brown been declared the starter for UT ? Did I miss something.
Nope. Gotta wait for fall camp. Fozzy Whittaker and Cody Johnson still holding it down. We'll see. Should be exciting.
I'm a staunch Sooner fan, and although I like Landry Jones, I don't see where he should be a Heisman hopeful this year. What's your take on Jones as a SERIOUS contender for the hardware?
I'm buying. He duplicates numbers from last year, or even does slightly worse, but Oklahoma is undefeated? Finalist for sure, at the very least.
Got my tickets to the Southwest Classic last week, and I'm really looking forward to it. Are you travelling down to Jerry's World for the game? Over/Under 50 points for the game, and who's your pick to win?
I'm probably a safe bet to be there for that one. It's a little late in the season, so I'll refrain from a pick, but I definitely think it'll be over 50 points.
With the round robin schedule, do you see any potential new rivalries to start up?
Missouri and Oklahoma need to bring back the Peace Pipe.
Aside from the game, what do you most look forward to when you travel?
Usually grabbing some dinner and seeing people I haven't seen in awhile in the calm before the storm on Friday nights.
How do you see the Oklahoma Florida State game going down? A lot of people are hyping up both of them, but I know Florida State gets hyped every year just to fall short while Oklahoma usually has very solid seasons. Do you see another blowout like last year or a closer match?
No blowout, but OU wins by 10.
Should I be disappointed that Cody Green has moved on and is considering Tulsa?
Yes. Better than Nebraska's offense made him look.
Breakout year for speedster Henry Josey?
Nope. Won't get enough touches behind De'Vion Moore and Kendial Lawrence.
hey ubbs, do you think swope and fuller will have around the same amount of catches this year or do you think fuller will get a lot more throws his way?
Will be within 10 catches of one another, but Fuller will have 250 more yards.
Will Iowa State's linebackers be the best in the conference by the end of the season?
No, Oklahoma hangs on to the title.
Ubbs, the rumor mill is starting up in Aggie circles again that that we're moving to the SEC. I seem to be one of thew few voices of reason noting what a horrible move it would be for A&M. Everyone else seems to think it would be the best possible move. Please talk some sense into these people.
I've tried. They're a stubborn bunch.
My stance remains the same. The recruiting advantages won't be as large as A&M fans believe they'll be (Texas kids don't grow up dreaming of playing in the SEC, and A
The & truncated your response again.
Here you go: My stance remains the same. The recruiting advantages won't be as large as TAMU fans believe they'll be (Texas kids don't grow up dreaming of playing in the SEC, and TAMU won't recruit Florida that well) and any edge TAMU thinks it will gain over Texas will be lost by simply losing games, which TAMU would do a lot more of in the SEC.
I don't buy that ATM would loose more games in the SEC. I thinkthey compare favorably with most teams there. This from a Sooner.
Apparently you haven't seen A&M suit up against SEC teams in awhile. Didn't go well for them last year. Or the year before that...or any year since the mid-90s.
736 yards, 5 TD's, 10.8 yards/catch last season is pretty fair receiving in by most folks measure. What do my stats look like for this season?
Slight drop, courtesy of one Hubert Anyiam.
Do you feel that the Big 12 is defensively weak? This seems to be the case as we enter into bowl seasons with interconference play. Often our Big 12 power houses are shamed when it comes to defensive play.
Yeah, OU, Missouri, A&M and Texas should have good defenses, but on the whole, the Big 12 is going to struggle in that area in and out of conference play. Lots of points this year.
Do you think the politicians in Texas will let A&M go to the SEC? Also, will K-State own Texas again this year?
Worth wondering, and it's one of the many questions that would have to be answered in A&M's favor for this to actually happen. And yes, I think K-State owns Texas again this year. Not in the standings, but on the field, yes.
A&M would have at the very least made it a closer game with LSU last year had our leading tackler not been injured. The game vs. arkansas would have also been more competitive if we had a healthy QB. I know its alot of could've would've should've... but I believe A
Ifs and buts, candy and nuts, etc.
A few more questions before we wrap this up...
A few weeks ago, you predicted a BYU victory in Austin...from a non-BYU fan perspective, why do you think the Cougars will pull out a W against the Longhorns?
UT's secondary is young, and I'm a believe in Jake Heaps' potential. Also, BYU is perennially underrated.
Ubben, your ESPN colleagues left out the most important reason why college athletes will never be paid... TAXES! If they're getting paid, they're professionals, if they're professionals, then they're not running amateur sports... thus no more tax exemption.
It's an interesting point. Honestly, I don't know a ton about the bureaucratic facet of that discussion, but that sounds like something that would have to be taken into consideration.
Although, if players were just given enough for cost of attendance, that might not be the case.
With the new breed of talent that Tubs is bringing to Tech, do you think Tech will threaten to win the Big 12 within in 2-3 years?
You mean the corners are young...
Yeah, sorry about that. Didn't mean to slight 11-year starter Blake Gideon.
If you started your own college you would pick the mascot to be...
What is your favorite gameday atomosphere in the Big 12?
Alright, that's all for this week. Check back on the blog in a bit for my thoughts on the All-Big 12 team, which was just released.
