Good to be with ya. Looking forward to your thoughts on UFC 132. Complete recap on MMA Live Friday night on ESPN2. Until then, I'm all ears...
Roller is no chump... Guillard is looking terrific. Whats next Jon?? Pettis?? Maybe Sherk??
I'd love to see him fight a few guys who also train under Greg Jackson, namely Donald Cerrone. I think a fight with Sean Sherk or Anthony Pettis also makes sense. Dennis Siver would appear to be in the mix as well. More importantly, Guillard is a stud right now.
HOW DID YOU SCORE FABER-CRUZ FIGHT ?I HAD CRUZ 48-47
48-47, Cruz. Gave Urijah Faber rounds 1 (could've gone to Cruz) and 4 (couldn't have gone to Cruz).
Is UFC 132 Card of the Year?
Most definitely. I can't even think of a card that's in the discussion with 132. Several memorable results and finishes.
Does Chael legitimately have a shot against Machida? If so, how?
If the fight happens, I would favor Machida. Chael has a shot. He can certainly do his thing on the ground, but getting Lyoto there and keeping him there is a tough sell for me. Sonnen doesn't have any issue cutting to 185. Not sure moving up to 205 is his best move. That's a big fight, if it materializes.
Which judge had the better idea of what went down for Cruz/Faber: 50-45 or 48-47? Big discrepancy
Most definitely 48-47. 49-46 Cruz is defensible. Really have a hard time seeing all 5 rounds for Cruz. There was at least a 10-10 in there in Rd. 4...at worst.
Chat update problems Jon just so you know
Good timing for a Faber vs. Miguel Torres fight?
Perfect timing. I know a lot of fans are campaigning for a trilogy fight between Faber and Cruz. It'll happen eventually, but as my colleague Josh Gross aptly put it, both Faber and Torres are coming off losses in which they looked quite good. Far and away the two biggest names in WEC history. Now that they both are at 135 lbs., now is the time to strike.
CONDIT CONDIT CONDIT, if Diaz does not take out GSP, CONDIT will, what do you think JA, one more fight for Carlos before he gets it and if so who makes sense for him next?
I think you'll see Carlos Condit take another fight, as opposed to waiting for the GSP-Nick Diaz result. And right now, I don't think there is another UFC welterweight I would favor to beat Condit...and that includes Jon Fitch. I've been dying to see Condit v. B.J. Penn for some time. That's the direction in which I'd go. I do see Condit as the next contender, after Diaz gets his shot.
Tsup J.A....how's Lesnar's health right now?
He's working his way back to health. Earliest return date, we are told, would be the first PPV of 2012. As said last week, I have my doubts that Lesnar will ever fight again. Hoping to be wrong on that one.
Jon, next time you visit with Miletich or Mir, please take an hour or two and teach them how to pronounce guillotine.
They are certainly not the only ones who pronounce it that way.
Gotta say, my chat game isn't up to par today because of a toe injury I've been battling. Sorry.
Toe shouldn't affect your ability to chat. What a disappointment that was on Saturday for you...and us.
What do you think of a Cruz vs. Aldo super fight?
On paper, looks like an enticing matchup. But that couldn't be further off my radar right now...and I think the same can be said for both fighters and the UFC.
Speaking of bad judging...Matt Wiman got robbed.
I was working MLB highlights at ESPN and, circumstantially, that was the only fight I was unable to watch. You aren't alone in your feeling that Wiman got robbed.
How does Tito get $450k flat rate for that fight? Plus 75k for SOTN. Hadn't won in 6 years, figured the UFC would renegotiate his contract at least down to $100k
Tito Ortiz has made the UFC a ton of money. He was and is worth every penny.
Next for Tito?
Gotta be happy for Tito Ortiz. As I wrote on Twitter, I have never covered another MMA fighter with as many haters. He waited a long time to exhale. I'd like to see him face Stephan Bonnar, but I'd be a little surprised if the UFC went in that direction. Perhaps the Noguiera-Franklin winner.
Does "The Ice Man" come out of retirement to fight Ttio?
No. Liddell is cooked.
Chost - I thought the Siver decision was terrible. Who did you have in that fight?
Didn't see it...I'll be able to go back and watch it before we shoot MMA Live on Friday. Hit me up on Twitter later and I'll get back to you.
By any other Welterweights not being favored over Condit, you are excluding GSP correct?
Correct. At this point, I would no longer favor Jon Fitch to beat Carlos Condit. Still have Fitch as No. 2 welterweight in our ESPN MMA Power Rankings, though. For now.
Bigger upset: Ortiz over Bader or Dos Anjos over GST?
Ortiz was the biggest underdog on the card. He closed at +500 or something in certain places. Dos Anjos is a damn good fighter. Were it not for that broken jaw, he had a good chance to beat Clay Guida. He's got a ways to go, but he's legitimate.
melvin guillard deserves a title shot agree
Sure he does, as does Jim Miller. Only one person can challenge for the belt at a time and, as I'm sure you know, the Frankie Edgar-Gray Maynard draw set everybody back a little bit.
Radley's outside the lines was an awesome story. Hope he fights in the UFC soon
Truly an inspiring story and told brilliantly by Rad and ESPN. If you missed it, link is up on OTL page at ESPN.com. He needs a few more wins to crack the UFC roster at 155 lbs., but he's got much of the MMA world rooting hard for him now.
Would Cruz finish more fights if he engaged more? The man has great footwork but he never really had Faber in real danger.
Cruz hasn't had a true finish since 2008. It's really the only thing you can knock him for on this tremendous run. I do believe he pursues finishes, but does so calculatedly. MMA is a constant exercise in risk-reward. His chin held up beautifully against a lot of big shots. Winning remains his No. 1 priority and he's nearly perfect as far as that goes.
Is Faber's chin an unfair advantage for a fighter?
How about Cruz's, too?
JA, should Tito be elected to the HOF and have the honor of walking into the Octagon with that honor? I vote yes
Not sure what the UFC's plans are for a 2011 inductee, but Tito Ortiz would be the first name that comes to mind. He wouldn't be the first fighter to compete after a UFC Hall of Fame induction. So my vote is with you.
Were you stunned by Cruz's multiple takedowns in the 5th? He made them look very easy.
Loved Cruz's aggression across the board in the 5th round. He fought as if he was the challenger and with a sense of urgency as if he was losing the fight. You can be sure he took the 5th round on every scorecard that was filled out that night.
is albert pujols really a machine....???????
Hahaha. Thanks for watching the fantasy show today. For the record, that line was written by our producer, Gregg Colli. You can haze him on Twitter. :)
Do you think The Axe Murderer should retire? Doesn't sound like he agrees with Dana...
I believe he should.
I say Tito vs MeatHead !!!!!!
Ortiz is somewhat of a factor now at 205, so no need to pursue a fight with Mitrione. And Meathead, likewise, has some more pressing business to attend to in his own division.
Jon, everyone is talking Tito, but no one is talking Bader. Where does he go from here?
Yeah, bad holiday weekend for Ryan Bader. Have no idea where he goes from here. Amazing how wretched 2011 has been for a guy who was previously undefeated. Hard to glean too much from the performance we saw this past weekend b/c we didn't get a chance to see if he had improved. We did see that he was way too hittable early and also didn't put up too much of a fight after Ortiz locked in the submission.
Who do you give the title shot to, Mighty Mouse or Bowles?
Why does Chael want to fight at 205? My vote is Chael VS Brian Stann.
Sonnen believes most of the top middleweights are tied up, I guess. And Chael also must think he can beat Machida. Otherwise, why not push for a fight with Stann or Mark Munoz?
do you and franklin mcneil hate each other? sometimes on the show you two start squabblin like a couple of skirts...
Very much the contrary. That's a good man right there. We disagree plenty, but there isn't any animosity. I hate Florian, though.
Does Johnson have a chance vs Cruz?
I won't pick him to win, but a chance? Sure. He'll have to keep his hands up and score a ton of takedowns. Even though I thought he lost to Miguel Torres, he handled the size disadvantage just fine.
Where is Leben's place in the division?
He's in the thick of things once again. I have him below Anderson Silva, Okami, Bisping, Sonnen, Stann and Munoz at least. He's in the top 10. I'd like to see him face Vitor Belfort, provided he beats Akiyama next month.
Favorite fight from 132?
The lasting memory for me will be Tito Ortiz, but I think I was most animated for Carlos Condit.
When are new ESPN.com rankings coming out?
They are updated constantly. Following UFC 132, we re-submitted rankings for bantamweight, lightweight, welterweight and light heavyweight.
Haven't been here in a couple of weeks, but wanted to say congratulations to your Bruins
Thanks, Z! Not a day has gone by since they won the Cup that I haven't taken at least one minute to bask in the glow. Far and away the most difficult pro sports championship to win.
Munoz VS Leben or Munoz VS Stann?
I'd rather see Munoz v. Stann.
My Bruins? Like I could afford that...
Herm Edwards vs Jon Gruden: who wins?
In an MMA fight? Herm. In a speaking challenge? Might also have to say Herm, but Gruden is the man and perhaps my favorite ESPN analyst.
With that horrible boxing match on Saturday do you think the Heavyweight division will ever be as good as it was?
With or without that match on Saturday night, I don't believe boxing's heavyweight division will ever come close to what it once was.
Will Mr.Wonderful be next in line for a title shot if he defeats Rashad?
Quite possibly. It's not the slam dunk that a Rashad Evans victory would be. But if Davis takes out the No. 1 contender, he'd have as strong a case as anyone.
Has the Bruins winning the Cup totally sunk in yet? I'm probably around 90% and I've watched Game 7 4-5 times.
Probably right there with you at 90%.
Guillard looked fantastic....think Edgar was paying attention to that fight?
Most definitely Frankie was watching. I do believe you will see Guillard in a No. 1 contender's fight in 2012. He's probably gonna have to beat Jim Miller or Ben Henderson to earn a crack at the belt...and that won't be easy.
Is there a better nickname in all of MMA than "Mr Wonderful"
Yes. The Arm Collector.
JA, you once perdicted that Funky Ben Askren was going to make his octagon apperance in 2012. Any more thoughts around it?
Did I really? How short-sighted was I? I do believe Askren is motivated by one day fighting in the UFC, but it won't happen in 2012. Bellator is going strong, strengthening its welterweight division, and paying the man.
What will it take to fix boxing? You should spearhead a committee.
I'm focused on helping with the effort to bring MMA to the masses, making MMA more mainstream. I fought for boxing for about 5 years and cashed out. All about MMA now. Still will order the boxing PPVs and watch it, but I don't champion its cause the way I do MMA.
With Spike TV saying that they will not be the home of the UFC after this year will the UFC have their own station by next year?
Don't know, Scott. I think we will eventually see a UFC network. As to the timeline, no idea.
You said you didn't think there is another UFC welterweight I would favor to beat Condit. That does not include GSP, right?!
Correct. Addressed that earlier in the chat.
Jon Fitch agrues that Klitschko is one of the greatest of all time but will never been seen in that light given the current state of the sport. Do you agree? Think he could beat a prime Tyson? I do.
I don't agree with Fitch on that. Wladimir Klitschko would've fared favorably in any era. He is as skilled as he is huge. Vitali is great, too.
If Melvin and Condit are sparring together at Jackson's camp can we get some footage of that?
Fix boxing? Heavies maybe...and it would take an american to choose to box over playing football or basketball. But fix boxing...I mean, you've seen the paydays, right? I don't think the top guys are thinking anythings broke...
Can you see the light weight class being the division that gets a new champ each fight after Gray beats Edgar? That weight class is the most stacked!!!
I think Frankie Edgar is one of the best P4P fighters in the world, but that belt is awfully tough to defend. Definitely the deepest top 10 amongst UFC divisions.
is bader the biggest dissapointment this year
He's in that conversation for sure.
What do you do with Tito? Especially if he wins his next fight?
Depends on whom that next fight is against. But if Ortiz were to beat, say Rich Franklin or Forrest Griffin, he'd have to get a top 5 UFC light heavyweight. I'd actually like to see him rematch Rashad Evans or Lyoto Machida at some point. Didn't think I'd say that again.
What will be Rashad's game plan?
Box, stick, move. Deceptive, single-leg takedowns. Phil Davis is one tough out. Getting mad respect from Vegas. I believe it's close to a pick 'em fight.
Biggest dissapointment this year is no MMA in the City that never Sleeps ( MSG specifically)
Sup Chost, first time long time. Any news out of TUF filming yet with Mayhem and Bisping.
Great to have ya. I'd imagine we'll have an update on the extended version of MMA Live this week. Filming has been going on for a few weeks now.
How is your Ipad from K-Flo treating you?
I've gotta thank Kenny for the rap CDs. The man knows his underground rap music. A lot of great stuff from Boston rappers, too. Didn't get the iPad, though. Maybe this week.
Honestly, was Tito's win over Bader a fluke due to one punch?
I wouldn't call it fluky. Strong instincts by Ortiz to take advantage of the opening and connect with the right. He went on the offensive quickly on the ground. I think it was a great win for a veteran fighter. Ortiz has graced that Octagon 23 or 24 times. He knows what to do.
I remember how pumped I was to watch my boy Hughes fight last time. Well that was a horrible outlook. I am nervous about this next one too. I dont want him going out badly.
I think the Diego Sanchez matchup is better for Hughes at this stage than B.J. Penn was. I'll probably pick the younger fighter, but I think Hughes may surprise you.
Spike's Fight Night repeat gets better rating than the live versus show - will that have an impact on UFC's next TV contract decision?
Good question. Don't have a great answer. But I will say that the UFC fans will find the product, wherever it ends up.
Are you a fan of the Twilight Saga?
I barely have time to watch the Red Sox. No.
My pal, Jay's nickname is The A** Collector. Chicks love him. just sayin
Thanks for sharing.
Kenny's rap cds? Care to elaborate on some artists?
Snowgoons, 7L, Esoteric, Vinnie Paz (of course), Special Teamz, Mr. Lif. Killer stuff.
I can't believe that Mike in Philly! I work for ESPN, I don't know what they do at Spike or G4...
Which MLB player would be a good MMA fighter?
Adrian Gonzalez seems like he'd be good at just about anything there is to do on this planet.
A more serious answer would be Jose Reyes cutting down to 145. He'd be a killer.
Any of the entrants in the Bellator Bantamweight tournament worth getting excited about? If you lose in the bellator tournament, are you cut / free agent?
Isn't Marlon Sandro in there? You've also got Bellator's featherweight champion, Joe Warren, trying to become the promotion's 1st 2-division champ. As for the contracts and as far as I know, Bellator retains most of the fighters even if they lose in the tournament. Most are on multi-fight deals. I'm sure they can be cut with a loss, but also retained at Bellator's discretion.
Has anymore been said about Shaq possibly doing an MMA fight?
Not since we spoke last August. I'd imagine it'll be on hold until Shaq gets healthy. But you can be sure when he next touches down in Bristol, MMA Live will request to have him on.
Will Nate Marquardt fight Ben Askren in 2011?
I would think Bellator would want Marquardt at 185, not 170.
Do you consider your job a 9 to 5?
Most definitely not. I work a lot of nights from 6P-3A. Love the job, but nights/weekends are a very real sacrifice.
Who has a better shot at winning, Diaz over GSP or Rampage over Jones?
Love the question. Don't love either Diaz or Rampage to win. I'll say Diaz, though. Just don't like Jackson's chances against Jon Jones right now. Sometimes I wonder if Edgar and Maynard together could beat Jon Jones right now.
Percentage chance you give Rampage to beat Jones?
5%. Only because 2% would be insulting to 'Page.
Scott Coker hinted at a big welterweight signing soon. Do you think it is Marquardt?
No. I'm wrong a lot, though. Any new Strikeforce contract would say 'Zuffa' on it. Would be surprised if they signed off on Marquardt.
You know "conscious" is an adjective, right?
Actually Anik's Conscious, great point. Would ESPN ever entertain picking up a MMA organization's rights? Have you pushed them to look into it?
Bellator's first season was on ESPN Deportes. In small part, it helped me land the play-by-play gig for the English broadcasts. I strongly believe the only promotion ESPN would enter into a TV deal with now would be the UFC. ESPN and UFC are two of the strongest brands in sport. A partnership makes a lot of sense.
...but I think the blood is a big issue. MMA is more superficially violent than any sport. A one-inch cut on a forehead can cover a canvas. If I were a TV executive, the blood would turn me off.
are you a Drake fan?
I hear the ladies in Gettysburg and Littlestown PA used to call you "THE MACHINE"
Yes, I'm a Drake fan. And yes, the Gettysburg women oft referred to me as 'The Machine'.
alright wrap it up chost
Last call, heads... 2 more...
What up JA!? As MMA fans, should we be worried about the Spike - UFC relationship split?
No. You can be sure the UFC is working hard to put its product in as many homes as humanly possible. In a few years, there will be so many shows you may actually miss one or two. All good things.
ESPN exec need to put you on 5 days a week!!
We would love it. Believe that.
What is next for Bonnar now?
Sup kid! I think Bonnar should fight Tito Ortiz, but some have suggested Ortiz deserves someone higher up the ladder. Bonnar's last scheduled opponent (Karlos Vemola) came out of nowhere. I think he deserves a higher-profile fight.
Are u excited about the Mayweather fight?
I'm amped anytime Floyd Mayweather fights and will be requesting the night of Sept. 17th off. Unabashed Mayweather fan. Chatting from home today and wearing my 'Cinco de Mayweather' t-shirt. Really.
No need to comment, but it'd be a crime if you've never heard Saul Williams. Not enough people know of this guy's genius.
Bowles vs. Johnson for #1 contender?
Makes sense. But then who does Cruz fight? Maybe Cyborg.
We're coming down the stretch to Anik 2.0, right? Is it tougher for the Mrs. to stay comfortable these days? The heat of summer can't help ...
She wants this damn baby out! As do I... I told Rashad I can't make his fight unless baby comes early.
how do i get my wife to take interest in MMA, or do i just not worry about it and keep it a guy thing?
My wife loathes sports, but for whatever reason, she really likes MMA. Hates baseball with a serious passion. I think keeping it a guy thing is just fine.
The decision to have a flyweight division still baffles me. I like to consider myself a hardcore MMA fan, and I can't name more than a handful of 125ers off the top of my head. Not saying those guys can't put on exciting fights, but having too many weight classes has contributed to boxing's demise.
Right there with ya. I think having 125ers in the UFC is overkill. 7 champions is enough.
Speaking of Bonnar, do you think he has more than two fights left in him?
Yes. No more than 5, though. He's got a lot of aspirations outside the cage.
Alright, gotta fly for a World Series of Poker conference call. Hope you all will catch our UFC 132 highlights/analysis on MMA Live. Friday at 11PM ET on ESPN2. Any questions I didn't answer? Hit me up on Twitter- @Jon_Anik - and I will get back to you within 24 hours. Thanks for chatting, folks. Y'all make my week. -JA
