Welcome everyone. I've got the Women's Soccer on TV while we're chatting here. Bummer - Sweden just scored on them. An injury of sorts...Now onto your questions...many in the queue!
Stephania, what can you tell me about Victorinos injury?
Hi Lamar: I can tell you that they are calling it a Grade 1 sprain. Not as bad as what it could be but it still may lead to a DL move. Really depends on what happens with the swelling in the area. If he's not able to grip a bat, they may give him the rest.
When can we expect Braun back?
Hi Drew: Not sure we can count on it being soon. The calf is still giving him enough trouble that he was sent for an MRI today. Have not yet heard the results - but we already know these calf injuries are often more problematic than players expect them to be. Even if the MRI is not dramatic, seems like they would not press him back into service if he's still having soreness.
Pujols returning this early has been a miracle for my playoff hopes since I'm in a head 2 head league. I know you already addressed in your column about his health going forward but what about hitting immediately? 2 weeks is barely enough time for muscle to atrophy, right?
Norman: I actually wrote some more about him today (hope you all will check it out later) since many people were curious about his quick return. The fact he was able to do so much so soon (meaning weight lifting, getting back to hitting, etc) kept him from losing a lot - so it will be interesting to see how he fares in his first outing, but I expect he'll get right back to it.
With Scott Baker having surgery already on his arm, does it make this elbow injury that much more significant? What do you think?
Jim: I certainly think there's more reason to be concerned. He insisted that this was not a big deal, that he almost didn't mention anything to the medical staff - but (and it sounds like he was being smart) he thought it was a bit more than something he should pitch through. Naturally you always worry with a pitcher's elbow and his history, but we'll see what they say later today (waiting on testing).
Hi Stephania, at one time, I had 6 of my pitchers on the DL but they are starting to come back. I am still waiting on my #1 guy (Josh Johnson) so how much longer until he is back so that I can resume my ascent to the top of the league? Rock Chalk! :-)
Jim: Your team sounds like one of mine. Wish I could help you more with the JJ prognosis, but remember this is a guy whose timetable has been moved back about 3 times. Then he was shut down for 10 days after seeing Dr. Andrews. Sounds like they hoped he'd be able to go at the end of July but that depends on whether he can comfortably get back to bullpens, then rehab starts, then games.
Hi Stephania, there's word that Strasburg might make an appearance in September - starting rehab now. Expectations?
Ben: I know everyone's getting excited about this latest news that Strasburg is potentially ready for some rehab starts. But slooooow down. They're discussing it. They will have to see how he does - and I'm sure they will increase the workload very slowly. I would say that it leaves the chance that we see him in September but at this point it remains just that...
URGENT! Damon just left the game after getting hit in the hand...its being called a contusion...how bad could this get?
Chris: Just saw the news. He's being sent for X-rays. So I guess it could get as bad as having a broken bone and keeping him out for a while - but if nothing broken then could be fairly brief. Will update when we get more info.
Ryan Zimmerman missed Monday's game with abdominal pain. What is your take on that situation?
Jeff: When I first heard it I was concerned b/c athletes typically do very well following this type of surgery. But upon learning further details, it really sounded like he was experiencing general soreness more than anything - not surprising - and resting him intermittently as he returns from something like this is not the worst thing. So at this point I don't see any major long-term concerns, but they give him days off every so often.
Just made a deal to get Carl Crawford. 1) When is he expected to return? and 2) What can I expect of him?
Bick: The team keeps hinting he's close - but it's not quite clear whether they'll return him before the break or not. He's been running the bases (which all sounds good) - but maybe with their injury misfortunes they are holding him out a little extra. I will say though - the closer he really is to 100% the better off you are. Would expect him to return to his original self.
Hi Stephania...Thoughts on Lester???
Rob: Lat strains in pitchers - we see them all the time. But they take on totally different forms. Sometimes very mild (a couple weeks), more severe can be a month or more. He was expected to undergo further testing this afternoon (haven't heard results yet) - but plan on him missing his next start, we'll see if they feel the need to move him to the DL.
PLEASE HELP! Every year, I'm always last place and my team is terrible this year too! What's the outlook on David Wright? Is he going to save my team?
Wilson: Don't know if Wright can be the saviour of your team, but it does look like he will begin rehab games next week, maybe back with the team shortly after the break. Given how he's been doing so far, I think there's a good chance he could be really productive in the second half. All the core work you have to do to rehab this injury may even help him at the plate so...there's hope.
How's Asdrubal's ankle doing?
Todd: Good enough to play today it sounds like. We'll see how he does - but that's a good sign.
Hey Starphania!! Polanco? what do u think? thx!
John: I'm a little concerned about his back issue. He was talking about numbness in his leg and the pain in his back affecting his swing. Phillies make it sound like a couple days off will do it - which it might - but typically this kind of thing sticks around. He just has to ask Oswalt.
What can I make of Broxton being shut down from his rehab? Any chance we see him the rest of this season?
BJ: talked about this on BBTN last week (shameless plug for the Thursday night show) - but I would say chances are pretty slim. They'll go slower with him this time (and they were conservative the last time) - so it will approach the end of the season at least in terms of time - and at that point, why push it?
Any updates on Erik Bedard?
KC: Sounds like nothing major has happened - mostly resting the knee - but he did rejoin the team and is expected to start throwing again soon. And it sounds like the Mariners expect him to be back in the rotation within the first week after the All-Star
Yunel Escobar....time to worry or will he be ok? Also, any insights on IKE DAVIS?
Sean: Well, I think there's always a reason to be worried when a guy is in the lineup (expected back), then scratched. Don't really know whether they're expecting him to be there for Weds - this has been a day-to-day assessment. Not much to speculate on since we haven't heard a ton. As far as Ike Davis, he is going to try running in another week. How that goes will likely determine whether he's headed for season-ending surgery or whether he'll try to play through.
News is that Tulowitzki will be out until at least Thursday, do you think his injury is DL worthy, considering all the quad injuries this year?
Mike: I can understand why they don't rush to move him there. He - of anyone - certainly understands quad injuries and has something to compare this to. He said this was far less significant than his previous quad episodes but was smart enough to come out early so as not to make it worse. If his symptoms are gone within a few days, he may not go to DL. If not, then I expect they'll move him there.
Should the Mets play it safe and put Reyes on the DL
Matthew: Kind of feel the same way as with the Tulo injury. Reyes certainly knows hamstring issues. And he immediately compared this one to his others and siad how much better this one felt within 24 hours. So while we can be sure they won't rush him, I think they're giving him a few days to sort it out and see how his leg responds.
Are you concerned at all about Putz' ability to return after the ASB? They seem to be downplaying the whole thing despite the fact that he has had arm trouble in the past.
Frank: I agree with you that the team seems more optimistic than I would expect. But - maybe if he's really feeling that much better, they may be concerned in the background but still are (and have to) progress him based on how he's performing. So far it's only been catch, but if he throws a bullpen this weekend, and if it goes ok, he could be on track to return after ASB. Not that my concerns would disappear for the future though.
Stephie-bad-news... thoughts on Prado's return?
Brian: It's getting closer. He's starting a rehab assignment today so that tells us everything has healed satisfactorily. Now it's a question of seeing how he does in games. There were hints of a pre-ASB return, but I'm not convinced that happens. May have a better idea after Thursday.
Hi Stephania, any word on Allen Craig? I never hear anything about him. He was on fire before he got hurt.
Steve: Good question - but info has been pretty scarce on him. Seems like a couple weeks ago he thought he'd be returning in a couple weeks. Just haven't heard much - but often guys' knees are stiff after a fractured kneecap. Will dig some more though.
Whats the word on when Brett Lawrie is going to return?
James: Well, everything got pushed back after he fractured his hand - and it's been slow. No official timetable but it's looking like it might not be until at least the end of the month.
When is Jed Lowrie expected back? Any news?
Sean: Very little news. He's been doing some throwing, hitting off a tee I believe - but still quite a ways from return. He was playing hurt and struggling for a while so can't see a big push to rush him.
brandon webb! bad bad news, eh?
John: Bad yes, surprising, not at all. I just feel bad for a guy who has spent two years trying to rehab and who just might not be able to make it back.
Stephania, Tell me what you know about Roy Oswalt!?
Ryder: apparently he's not done with injections after all. He's expected to undergo a series of these starting sometime later this week. Then it's a wait and see. Really can't put a timetable on this one.
Hey Stephania! Any word on Brennan Boesch's Knee?
Judd: Uncomfortable from fouling the ball off his knee but sounds like there's no major concern.
any news on Rivera?
Matt: Just that they're giving his sore triceps a break and it will likely be day-to-day for a bit. He doesn't sound too concerned.
Thanks everyone for coming. Time for me to go. Blog entry will post later so check for more info on Pujols, Lester (sounds like he's headed for DL) and other answers to your questions. Tomorrow it's the 06010 podcast, Fantasy Focus and Baseball Tonight! Have a great weekend - stay healthy!!
