Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (2:01 PM)

Hope it's cooler where you are than it is here. But let's keep the keyboard hot and get to the questions. Fire away.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What NASCAR Race do you think that Danica Patrick will win at in the future either in the Nationwide Series or Sprint Cup?

David Newton
  (2:02 PM)

Tough one to answer. Her best chance to win probably is at a plate race. She was close at Daytona. Will be tough to break through anywhere else for a year or so at least, particularly when she gets to Cup where there is far more talent.

christ steven (reedsville pa )

hey david i am a fan of the 24 an the 51 do think they can both finish in the top 10 this weekend thanks bro.

David Newton
  (2:02 PM)

Definitely believe Gordon can. He's been a first-time winner at a new track three times. Wouldn't surprise me to see him make it four.

greg (louisiana)

whos ur tp 5 for kentucky

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

Since I haven't seen the Cup guys in a race there before hard to judge. Joey Logano, who has dominated the Nationwide race there, definitley should be a factor. Harvick has an edge because he tested there previously and has driven some NW races. After that you've still got to look at Edwards, Johnson and Kyle Busch.

Guy (Enfield NH)

So how much credibility did you just lose by not reporting Kyle Busch's divorce??? Thanks...

David Newton
  (2:06 PM)

First, it was Kurt Busch and he's not divorced yet. I have spent the past four or five months checking court documents to see when they actually filed. Wasn't able to do that. I would have not been responsible had I reported based on hearsay. Could have been a lot of reasons beside separation that Eva was not at the track despite what I was hearing. If anything, I think I gained credibility by not tossing it out there. I did put on twitter when Kurt showed up with the new girlfriend and I regret not asking him about that at Sonoma. Other than that nothing I could have done.

Bill Scott (Lake Summerset, Illinois)

Hell-o David, Are the Fords going to be up front this weekend? I'm a Kenseth fan and it seems like the 17 team is hitting it's stride. If Edwards leaves, do Subway and AFLAC stay with Rousch/Fenway and maybe end up on the 17? Thanks, Bill

David Newton
  (2:07 PM)

They do like the 1.5-mile tracks and Kentucky is that. Plus several of those drivers have experience at Kentucky. I wouldn't disregard a few of the Toyotas, though. Joey Logano and Kyle Busch surely will be factors. As for Edwards, not sure about Subway but hear AFLAC will be with Edwards wherever.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that the NAPA 200 scheduled for Saturday August 20,2011 will be cancelled at Montreal?

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

Nope. Just may not be back in 2012.

jesse (iowa)

Hey Newt! so i heard earlier that this years nationwide race will pry be the last on at the track there. that is terrible but that also opens a spot on the schedule. with an exciting short track in ORP gone, could a place such as gate way, memphis or millwaukee get their race back?

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

A date really hasn't come open since the race has been moved to Indianapolis Motor Speedway. But it is a shame ORP lost the race.

jesse (iowa)

newt no chat last week? u owe us 2 hours this week!! jk i wish u could tho, love your chats

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

Not my call, but thanks. If they allowed me two hours I would give it to you. Thanks.

AR (MN)

NASCAR just announced that the Nationwide Series race at Lucas Oil Raceway will be moving to the Brickyard in 2012, and there is speculation that the Nationwide Series will not return to Montreal next year. That would leave the Nationwide Series with 33 races, while the Sprint Cup Series has 36 races. How many Nationwide Series races do you think will be added next year (0-3), and which tracks would you most like to see add a Nationwide Series race (Lucas Oil, Milwaukee, another Canadian track, etc.)?

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

Not sure they'll add a race other than perhaps replacing Montreal with another road course race somewhere. I actually liked the track in Mexico and was sorry to see the series leave there. Not sure there is a magic number on the number of races. For financial reasons teams probably would like to cut back rather than add.

AR (MN)

What is the latest on the situation at Red Bull Racing and NASCAR's Silly Season?

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

Asked that question yesterday to a few folks. Was told there is interest but because of the Fourth of July holiday weekend the process slowed a bit.

eric syracuse new york [via mobile]

hey dave now that david ragan has a win under his belt do you think that will be enough to get him in the chase

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

If he can stay around the top 15 in points I do. But remember any of those drivers 11-20 now could win and bump him off if they're ahead of him in points. He needs a run of consistency to climb closer to the top 10 so that doesn't happen.

cody (MI) [via mobile]

do you see kahne getting a win and making it in the chase this season.

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

I really don't. I know he's had a few good runs, but a lot is going on at Red Bull that makes me skeptical.

PJ (Cary, NC)

Newton, you own a team and can put either Ricky Stenhouse or Trevor Bayne in your car. Who are you taking?

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

I'll go with Bayne simply because I can market him as a Daytona 500 champion. Marketing is half the battle.

Matt (Virginia)

Does UPS stay with Ragan after last weekend's win or is it too little too late?

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

Jack Roush is working to make that happen and the victory does help. Making the Chase would help anymore. The only wrench in this could be if Roush has to use UPS to keep Carl Edwards.

Adam C (Vermont)

With rumors of NASCAR leaving Montreal after this year, do you think Nationwide will pick up another road course? Could Lime Rock be on that short list of options?

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

I do believe they'll look for another road course, but haven't heard a short or long list yet.

Smoke14 [via mobile]

Why do u think smoke hasn't caught fire yet in the summer?

David Newton
  (2:16 PM)

He's had some good runs, just not the great finishes. His primary concern now has to be staying consistent enough to get into the top 10 and securing a spot in the Chase.

rich kent ohio [via mobile]

Do you think jr last 3 races are a slump or the start of a downward spiral

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

A few weird things have happened, such as the wreck at Daytona, Martin getting into him the week before. He's had fast cars, a few capable of top 10s or possibly wins. How that team handles it moving forward will determine whether this turns into a slump. My guess is they'll rebound, but the nerves have to be a lot tighter with where they are in points now.

Jon (Strasburg PA)

Tony Stewart is hanging on in the Chase. Do you see him being a factor or is he pretty much done as one of the elite drivers?

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

If the Chase started today he wouldn't be in, so not sure what you mean by hanging on. I still believe he can and probably will make it, but he needs to start winning to move back into that elite category. Not ready to say he's done yet.

Keith (Southport, NC) [via mobile]

What teams are testing fuel injected engines at Kentucky? Will they use special programming in place of retrictor plates at Daytona and Talladega next year?

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

Hendrick with Almirola, Roush Yates with Biff and Matt Kenseth, Earnhardt Childress engines and RCR with Austin Dillon, Toyota Racing development with Mike Skinner and Penske Racing with Sam Hornish I believe are all participating.

Matt (Virginia)

What has happened to McMurray this year? Did those handful of wins last season lead to some overrating going into this year?

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

Slight changes to the car, bad luck, lots of little things make a big difference from year to year.

Kristin (Covington KY,)

Hi David, I'm really looking forward to the race Sunday and was wondering if you think Kyle or Joey will win because of their experience and if you think Kyle and Dave have the consistency to win the Sprint Cup? Thanks!

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

You better get ready for Saturday night racing because it's not a Sunday show. I do like Joey and Kyle for the very reasons you said, but there'll be enough practice there the next few days that experience at the track won't be a huge edge.

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

David, got to get these q's in before my interview at 2:30. When do you think we hear any news w/regards to Carl, UPS' future, 17 sponsor etc? Also, have you heard anything with regards to what will happen with those 3 things?Last, any thoughts on Lisa Brown leaving RPM? She definitely got them on the right path w/Murstein.

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

Glad we can beat the interview. I talked to Roush at Sonoma and he said the sooner the better, that he doesn't want to go into the Chase with Edwards' contract hanging over him. As for UPS, I suspect that will come down in the next month as well, Not sure on Kenseth's sponsor since his old sponsor just announced it was leaving. I wouldn't be surprised to hear a few announcements at Indy. As for Brown, no real thoughts.

Kyle (NJ)

Hey David 2 part question here.1.The past 3 races Dale Jr has poor finishes do to incidents on the track, although none of were his doing. But with no wins and 7th in points and basically 1 more slip up will knock him out of the top 10, is it time for JR Nation to hit the panic button?2. Can we expect (because I am praying) enough changes to the 2013 Cup Car to align the bumpers differently so we can call this "trailer racing" at Daytona and Dega a thing of the past when that time comes? Thanks!

David Newton
  (2:25 PM)

Not time to panic for Junior Nation or Junior, but the next few weeks and how they rebound will be huge to the rest of his season. As for the two-car draft, you're not alone. A lot of people are hoping the new car takes care of that.

devinbachman (whitmore lake mi)

david is young logano to favorite to win he has the most track experince at this track kentucky

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

That is why a lot of people are picking him, but I'll add the confidence he got with a third-place at Daytona has to help. The kids needs confidence in Cup.

Matt (Rochester, NY)

Simple solution for the HORRIBLE plate races. Paint a line at the entrance and exit of the turns. No locking together in the turns. This will end the ridiculous tandem garbage. Seriously, that is not racing. Let's just pick a partner and bolt the cars front and back ends together and call it a 21.5 car field. That is not racing, it is nonsense. The worst race I have seen EVER in NASCAR! And I have sat through many Pocono marathons in my life!

David Newton
  (2:27 PM)

As I wrote Monday, I am not a fan of it. Think they should have tandem winners and do tandem burnouts the way things are. But if you really think about it, plate racing in general is not really racing.

Brian (Woodbridge, VA)

Do you think NASCAR and Sprint are doing damage to the sport by not allowing Verizon and AT&T in as a sponsor? With the way the economy is they should be thankful those companies want to sponsor a race team.

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

In this economy, any sponsor you block out does harm. But Sprint pays a lot of money to be the series sponsor and if they demand to be that exclusive then NASCAR has no choice. They pay a lot of bills.

Tim (Southern INdiana)

Give me a good trfecta for this weeks racei in the Bluegrass.

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

Busch in trucks, Logano in Nationwide and Harvick in Cup.

Jack (Phx, AZ)

How will JPM do this week? Top 10?

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

I'll go top 15. He's been decent at mile and a half tracks, but not great.

Ryan (Oxford, PA)

Why are people hyping up the fact that experience is going to help a bunch at this track? Everyone has tested here at one time or another, so we should probably look to see the same cars that always run well at 1.5 milers to do so again, right?

David Newton
  (2:31 PM)

I kind of said the same thing earlier, that after a few days on the track things will even out. But you still can't ignore that a few drivers know their way around the track better, know how it changes and perhaps can better communicate with their crews how to keep up with those changes.

David Newton
  (2:31 PM)

Eddie C. (South Bend, IN)

A little harsh about Sorenson and Stenhouse not being worthy of winning at IMS, don't you think? Maybe you're not worthy of covering the races at a place where legends like Hinton and Economaki have worked.

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

Didn't say they weren't worthy of winning. Just seems to water down the honor of kissing the bricks to open it up to all levels. Not as special. It was nothing personal against those guys. The fact that I chose them means I believe they have a chance to win there.

casper (dc)

which tracks results this year should i look at as indicators for who looks good at kentucky?

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

Kansas probably the most.

casper (dc)

time to start panicking in Jr Nation? Or are we going to be alright..

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

Relax.

Rob F (Hoboken, NJ )

With "all" the "props" going to first time winners this year, who is the "most respected" of the crop? I'd love to think the win at Darlington validates Smith more than the others, but that doesn't seem to be how things work.

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

I'm with you on Smith. Winning at a plate track is a crapshoot. Winning at Darlington, even if tire strategy played a role, takes more.

devinbachman (whitmore lake mi )

davie is paul menard to next frist tinme drive to win if so i say mis this augest

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

A few guys might fall into that category, but Paul definitely is among the top four with a shot.

Bob T. (Winston-Salem, NC)

As long as they have the Indy road course set up for the Grand Am race next year, why not run the Nationwide race on the road course as well? Would surely give a better show than the big square.

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

Hey, not a bad idea, particularly if they lost the Montreal race.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

With the "Super Weekend" scheduled for July 27-29,2012 will we see Danica Patrick racing in the 19th Brickyard 400?

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

Sounds like there's a good chance of it.

Daryl (Iowa)

Since Rousch is trying hard to keep UPS, I thought there was no way the 17 was going to step out and try to pass the 6, and instead push him to victory like he did. Am I incorrect in this thought?

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

Nope. If Kenseth could have done something to get around Ragan I'm sure he would have. Didn't hear any team orders on the radio.

Layne (Minnesota)

David, why doesn't the Nationwide series race at Martinsville?...seems like a good fit with Montreal possibly being taken off the schedule

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

I'd go see any race at Martinsville. One of my favorite places. Not sure why they stopped going there after 2006. Seems like a mistake to me.

Paige (TN)

What's Hambone gonna do this weekend?

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

What he always does.

Tyler (Minnesota )

With the new ownership at Iowa do see them getting a Cup race in the future? The lack of seats can't be the only thing holding back from happening

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

I believe that'll be the next place NASCAR expands, but it'll probably be two or three years before that happens. The seating can be taken care of easily. The rest is in place.

Dale, Jr. (Daytona (Saturday night))

I was just griping at the media about the racing at the restrictor plate tracks because I was upset that Johnson and I waited too long to make our move. Plus we didn't have the usual cautions that bunch up the field halfway through the race. Come on NASCAR, help me out.

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

Shouldn't you be on the track practicing?

Jeff (Georgia)

Newt, you hearing anything on who might sponsor Kahne the other 14 races that Farmer's doesn't next year? Any chance he gets a win this year? Thanks

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

Nothing on the sponsorship yet. As I said earlier, I am skeptical he'll get a win.

Bob T. (Winston-Salem, NC)

Today on YouTube I was watching the 1997 Busch race at South Boston. Awesome short track racing there with a photo finish, and in victory lane, the winner said he wished NASCAR would never take those short track races away. Sad to see one of the best, ORP, leaving the schedule.

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

Agreed. Sad anytime a short track in particular loses a race.

Dr. Emmett Brown (The Future)

Great Scott! I fired the DeLorean up to 88 mph and sped ahead to Saturday night. Tony Stewart will win to make up for his blown race at Las Vegas.

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

I looked ahead too and saw Stewart running out of gas with half a lap to go.

Boss Hogg (Hazzard County)

Now that NASCAR is coming to the back woods of Kentucky, how long before NASCAR comes to Hazzard County Speedway for the Boars Nest Cup?

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

Depends. Will the Duke boys be there?

Damon (Dallas, TX)

What do you think about Danica running a Cup car for SHR at Talladega in October? Possible or no chance?

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

I'm told she will not run a Cup race this year.

Kevin (FL)

theres a news conference at 3:05 today with carl edwards.. any idea if this is about his contract?

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

Believe it's his regulary scheduled media availabilty. Haven't seen a special media alert that would tip off such an announcement.

Joe (Troy, NY)

David, Is there any news about Greg Biffle's daughter being born? I thought the due date was the 10th. Are they preparing for a sub if she is in labor during the race?

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

Yes, Emma was born yesterday around 5 pm. No sub necessary.

Thomas (NJ)

Stewart said if he misses the chase because of getting paid back by the likes of Brian Vickers, then "so be it". Is that the message sponsors , employees, fans and NASCAR wants to hear?

David Newton
  (2:48 PM)

If Stewart misses the Chase because of that he'll regret it. I still don't believe Vickers did anything wrong. He was slowing to avoid a wreck all around him. I understand Stewart's complaint about blocking, but thought he missed the boat on that one. As for how sponsors, fans and NASCAR feel about him saying that, I suspect loyal Stewart fans will back him regardless.

casper (dc)

6 hours of practice today? Isnt that a bit of overkill?

David Newton
  (2:49 PM)

A bit, but they are testing fuel injection and giving drivers a chance to adjust to a new track. It's cheaper to have them there today on a race weekend than to have brought them all in for a special one-day test in which they would have tested for 12 hours probably.

Mac (atl) [via mobile]

I'm actually dissapointed to see david ragan win last week because I know for a fact he has no tallent. If jack R. Resigns him next year he will regret it big time!

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

A bit harsh don't you think. He almost won the Daytona 500 and a few years ago finished 13th in points. Roush is a pretty good judge of talent so I'll go with his opinion on this one.

Drew (Bloomington, Ind.)

David, are you excited about the potential intrigue the new wild-card system could provide? We could see several drivers from spots 11-20 win races leading up to the Chase.

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

It's definitley added drama to the regular season, and don't forget those at 21-24 or so that could win and slip into the top 20 and become eligible.

Joe (Troy, NY)

Is this Biffle's last stand to get into the Chase? Does he need to win here to have a realistic shot?

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

Not really. He's good enough to win anywhere. His primary concern should be consistency and getting into the top 10.

Michael (Dallas)

Do you think Kyle has a chance for the triple this weekend?

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

If he's behind the wheel he always has a chance.

Kevin (FL)

Is Ryan Newman in a contract year and if so, what is the status of his negotiations with stewart hass racing?

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

Yes he is. He also needs more sponsorship for that car. He hasn't gotten a lot of attention because most expect Stewart to re-sign him, but you never know if he misses the Chase.

cody (MI) [via mobile]

why is ford not swiching to the mustang in 2013

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

Because it's the Nationwide model and they want to push another in the Cup series.

Joe (Troy, NY)

How much is Carl Edwards being distracted by his contract situation for 2012?

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

Haven't noticed any. He's having a pretty good year if you haven't noticed. He had a slip last week that cost him the points lead, but he's been as consistent as any most of the year.

Matt (Charlotte)

Hey David, I heard yesterday from a little birdy with some inside knowledge that Danica has made her decision to race only Nationwide next year, no Indy. You hearing anything?

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

Old news. I've been saying that for more than a month. Although she is keeping the door open for the Indy 500. And she does hope to run in seven Cup races next year.

Jeff (Georgia)

Newt, any chance Road Atlanta could get the nationwide race that Montreal may lose especially since AMS lost the March cup race? Thanks

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

Haven't heard that but not a bad idea to give something back to Atlanta.

Joe (Troy, NY)

Who do you anticipate being in the #20 Home Depot car in 2012, and if it isn't Joey...where do you see him going? Is there room at JGR for a fourth car?

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

If it's not Joey then the only other option is Carl Edwards. I don't see Joey leaving JGR, and yes there is room for a fourth Cup car if sponsorship can be found.

Paul (Hell, Minnesota)

What's going on with Biffle's team? Is it the equipment, or the driver?

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

Not the driver. He's had troubles on pit road, the track . . . and as I said earlier those things can make small issues big.

Bob T. (Winston-Salem, NC)

Have you heard any talk of team orders coming into play for one of the Chase wildcard spots? How does NASCAR feel about team orders?

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

Not a bit. NASCAR owners get offended at team order talk.

Dave (Virgina)

Terrible that they took away a race from ORP...I still think if they really want to limit the Cup regulars in NNS, they need more "break-away" races on some fun Saturday night tracks in different cities than the Cup races...

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

Would be nice, but from a cost standpoint it's cheaper for a lot of the owners that have cars in both series to be in the same place.

Karen (CA)

Not a Kurt (nor Kyle) Busch fan. However, I don't feel asking questions about their personal family relationships is appropriate at any time, let alone a press conference. Out of bounds for sure!

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

It just didn't feel right to ask Kurt about his new girlfriend after the win. If I had been at the track the next week and it hadn't been pointed out before I was ready to ask though.

Rob (Colorado Springs)

Do you really think that Carl and Kyle could be team mates? I think that if JGR signs Carl then Kyle will be out, similar to the Hendrick situation a few years ago.

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

They wouldn't be interested if they didn't think they could work together. I've seen them joke around a few times at the track. Most of these guys can adapt to anything, although I'd never count on Kevin Harvick and Kyle being teammates.

David (PA)

What feud do you see potentially resurfacing in the next few weeks?

David Newton
  (3:00 PM)

Kyle and Kevin remains the biggest.

Steven (Carson, NV)

Good point by Bob, shouldn't Newman give up his chase spot to help Tony get in?

David Newton
  (3:00 PM)

Would you give it up if you were Newman? And I don't think Tony wants to be given anything. He wants to earn it.

David Newton
  (3:00 PM)

Would you give it up if you were Newman? And I don't think Tony wants to be given anything. He wants to earn it.

David Newton
  (3:01 PM)

That's it for me today folks. Sorry I didn't get to as many questions as usual. This old computer is on its last leg. My new one arrived today and it should be much faster next week. More horsepower, more questions answered. Enjoy the Kentucky race. I'm looking forward to it.
