Greetings all. Thanks for your attendance. I will not take roll. Busy afternoon, actually. Onward...
Kerry Collins just announced his retirement. How do you think this affects Jake Locker and what moves the Titans make?
Matt Hasselbeck's value is up. If Titans can't get him, hopes of a quality mentor to play in front of Locker for long shrink significantly.
How do you feel about Hughes' start last night? I saw some good along with the bad on the 60" flatscreen here in the Finley Hilton...up to 93 on the radar gun...
hey Mr. Kuharskywho has the most likelyhood of being the colts next reggie wayne: collie, garcon, gonzo, white (haha), other via free agency, or other via draft?
Collie is the best of what they have, but he is a lot different than Wayne and Harrison. I would think they'd be looking for one next year. Probably draft.
How involved do you think I(Det. Holder) is in the Rosie Larsen case considering the season finale? Also, give me one name(hopfully a big named player) in free agency that you think the Titans would most likely covet.
Based on the last scene, you're way involved. And because that really ticks me off, I decline to offer you any information. Now if Sarah Linden asked me something...
We always here about 8 in the box to shut down CJ. I think even if we had a Peyton Manning level QB, that teams would still stack the box. Do you believe that teams would have to play honest defense if we had the passing threat or do you you think it wouldn't matter.
If they had a QB-WR who could connect against coverages that included eight in the box, defenses would back out of the box quickly.
Oh Hai Paul, how big or what kind of an impact do you think Colts rookie Delone Carter will be? I've heard nothing but positives about this guy, but at the same time I'm not really expecting a fourth round pick to have the same impact as a Mark Ingram for instance.
I think he could be their short-yardage and goal line guy, which means he could score a bunch of TDs.
almost every year the texans are chosen for a suprise playoff run and yet they still haven't done it, the colts are pretty much perennial contenders the jaguars have no shot and the titans are hit and miss from year to year, what do you think are the key pieces missing from each team, ie; players, coaches, gm whatever it may be
The Jaguars have no shot. Except for the part where they could have won the division with two games remaining and finished in second place.
VACATION!? VACATION!? Pk I thought we were buds, you didn't tell me about this. I feel sad and left in the dark. Maybe I wanted to go.
I'm coming to see you, chief!
Paul, what do you think are the chances of Derrick Harvey turning a corner and becoming at least 3/4s the player he ws supposed to be? Derrick Johnson in KC was pretty irrelevant til his 5th yr
I do not think Derrick Harvey is Derrick Johnson.
Where do you think Kelvin Hayden would fall in the free agent cornerback rankings? I'd estimate his ability to be around that of Ike Taylor, if not above. Perhaps Colts fans shouldn't be so quick to want him cut.
I agree. People tend to get angry over injuries. Not like he wanted to be recovering and then hurt again.
Favorite moment/song(s) from the U2 concert? "Zooropa" has become one of my favorite songs after hearing it live, blind guy playing was awesome too.
I might be listening to said show right now, hypothetically. Hard to top "I Will Follow." "Elevation" and "City of Blinding Lights" right up there too.
<a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/25164/collins-retirement-not-good-for-titans" target="_blank">Collins retirement not good for Titans</a>
Mr Jury Foreman, what is your verdict on the charges against one Roger Clemens?
I have a lot of trouble caring. I would like the verdict to include that history will judge him as a Red Sox.
Kerry Collins, Jake Locker, and Matt Hasselbeck all have the same agent. Any chance that Collins retirement is a sign that Hasselbeck may be in a Titans uniform in the near future?
I think that's probably over-thinking it. Titans are big rules followers. Back channel talks with Hasselbeck would be very limited at most.
Could you see the Jaguars asking Garrard to take a pay cut if Gabbert makes the most of his 36.8% of the reps in camp?
I could. Though if he says no, I can't see them cutting him.
I think the people that are worried about Jax getting a linebacker or a free safety should be more concerned about them locking up Marcedes Lewis before anyone else, what do you think?
I'm presuming they hold his rights via the tag.
Why doesn't Peyton Manning work for say, $500K a year? He makes millions with endorsements. It would be a win win for him. He'd look humble. They'd be able to get great free agents in around him with more money which would translate to a few more Super Bowel rings for his trophy case. Why is he shooting himself in the foot by wanting to get the, "bigges contract ever?"
It's the Colts who've done the talking about the biggest contract ever, not Manning. Why shouldn't he make as much as he can while he can? He's not running a charity here. He's working. They've won a Super Bowl paying him. They can again. If they put $20 million against the cap a year, they can still pay other people.
Even with Collins retired am I still going to go into the season at 3 on the depth chart? Aside from Hasselbeck there's not much for the Titans to go after at QB.
If you are No. 2 on the depth chart, the Titans are going to be in bad, bad shape.
In the event we can't get Hasselbeck: I'm not the biggest Donovan McNabb fan, but surely he would be better than the list from your post: Matt Leinhart, Matt Moore, Trent Edwards, and Marc Bulger, right?
He's not a free agent. He's under contract. You want the Titans to trade for him? He's due a ridiculous bonus something like 10 days before the season starts. I want the best guy they can get without trading anything.
Im sorry, but Im still laughing about all the Jason Hill talk from last week. The Jags cant possibly feel good about starting the season with Thomas and Hill can they? I mean...they just cant. Right?
<a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/25142/jaguars-mike-thomas-feels-ready-for-takeoff" target="_blank">Jaguars Mike Thomas feels ready for takeoff</a>
Are you going to be a presenter at my roast?
Depends on negotiations.
So there are 2 QBs destined to be cut by their teams. Both teams probably going to release instead of trade them. So instead of getting nothing for them, why not trade McNabb and VY straight up?
You're presuming the Redskins want Young. Why?
In the case of the titans, is it better to go with a vet qb that is similar to locker or familiar with palmer's offense?
The don't have the luxury of being so choosy.
Carson Palmer could be a solution for Titans? Why not use him to mentor Locker and give them a QB who is a threat downfield?
I've liked that idea from the start. But Cincy is adamant about not trading him. And once you spend such a high pick on the QB of the future, you can't trade much for a guy to play in front of him for a while.
Follow up, isn't improving run defense this year the most pressing issue for the colts? They play 8 games a year against elite RBs (MJD, Foster, CJ)
Very important. Not always addressed. Drake Nevis could help. Changes at LB, some forced by a potential Session departure, could too.
I can't see the color blue. It looks to me like the Colts are invisible from the neck down on game day. Any chance they change jersey colors for those afflicted with blue/green colorblindness like myself?
I am guessing no.
Do you take the over/under on Monday being the day the NFL players and owners comes to Jesus and decides (officially) to not kill the Golden Goose?
I think predicting when there will be a deal is one of the silliest pursuits I've ever seen.
The Hasselbeck scenario seens to be getting more attention lately. What if anything has made that more likely than Kyle Orton or Carson Palmer?
Haseelbeck is a free agent. Orton and Palmer are not. Once the Titans used such a high pick on their quarterback of the future, trading for another quarterback became far less likely.
Where do you think Ijalana should play this year on the Colt's line, RG or RT? I like RG with DeVan at RT and Diem (i.e. the Human Turnstile) as a 1-yr backup...LT and LG seem locked up with Castonzo and CJ...
I don't know what's making you think DeVan is a tackle, but he isn't.
If you're Gene Smith and you can sign one free agent who would you pick of the 4, Ray Edwards, Eric Weddle, Sidney Rice or Barrett Rudd?
Weddle. But I am safety-obsessed.
<a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/25162/what-john-mackey-meant-to-the-game" target="_blank">What John Mackey meant to the game, by John Clayton</a>
Why should I be sold that Jarrett Dillard will be a healthy contributor this year? I can't help but feel we've seen this story play out before with Mike Sims Walker.
He's due? Luck changes? They have few alternatives? I don't know why. It's certainly not a solid spot.
DeVan looked better in the few snaps at RT than Diem did last year...is there a better option on the current roster than Diem?
Watched the re-run of Hard Knocks last night. Which AFC South team would you find most interesting for a season of Hard Knocks?
Colts would never ever allow it. I think Houston would be interesting. Hard Knocks can pressurize camp. And the Texans consistently fail to do well under pressure. So dealing with more, sooner might be good for them.
Would I be happy and motivated playing in Chicago next to Julius Peppers and in front of Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs and for Rod Marinelli given how highly that Warren Sapp thinks of him?
I don't know that Chicago would be smart to bring you in. Cheap deal in Philly has long seemed like the right thing, but maybe the Eagles would be afraid despite Jim Washburn. A Sapp endorsement of a person or situation is hardly a clincher to me.
No offense, but making 500K a year isn't a "charity" in most working mans minds.
He's not most working men, is he? He's got a window to make a lot of money. It's nonsensical to me to suggest he should pass on a good share of it. It's not his job to structure things under the cap. It's the Polians' job.
Safety doesn't seem to be a really hard transition from college to the NFL, a lot of rookie safeties do very well and JAx picked one in the 4th round that from what I've read seems to have all the tools to succed.. what do you think are the chances Prosinsky (sp) comes in and lights it up?
Very slim. And even if he did, who's the other safety? They need better than Courtney Greene. They play two games against Peyton Manning and two against Matt Schaub. They need a top-flight coverage safety.
what about jacques McClendon breaking into the starting line @left or right guard ..LT Castonzo, LG mcC/CJ, C Saturday, RG Cj/McC, & RT Ijalana
Castonzo, CJ, Saturday, McLendon, Ijalana. I'm good with that.
You complete me.
How much are you loathing the imminent Vince Young in TN whispers and questions now that Collins has retired?
Sweet vacation just around the corner.
Did the possibility of Locker starting from Day 1 just become greater? Regardless of needing time, or would they do something like 2006 when they signed Collins two weeks before Week 1 and just throw the veteran in no matter the result. P.S. You're not the only one hypothetically listening to that concert...
Yes it got greater. But it's not their preference.
Safety doesn't seem to be a really hard transition from college to the NFL, a lot of rookie safeties do very well and HOUpicked one in the 5th round that from what I've read seems to have all the tools to succed.. what do you think are the chances Keo (sp) comes in and lights it up?
I'm confused as to how Keo in Houston and Prosinski in Jacksonville are going to come in and light it up. It was a terrible draft for safeties. Ideally they'd be special teamers and depth as rookies. You want them playing against Manning early? No thanks. I want Eric Weddle, Quintin Mikell, Dawan Landry...
Why arent the players/owners worried about alienating the fans the way baseball did several years ago ? Baseball still hasnt recovered from it.
Because they know people will still go to games and turn them on.
Are you going to do the "Ask One Question" post for the Titans and Jags?
I should, yes.
Hey Chief, I bet you can't wait for your favorite sport a?? NASCAR a?? to finally be running its inaugural Cup race in your favorite state a?? Kentucky a?? this weekend!
Is this heaven?
Did you largely agree with the NFL Network's ranking of the current Top 100 NFL Players?
Paul...I've seen you mention the possibility of Reggie Bush in Indianapolis a couple of times....If that acutally happens, who's the odd man out? Do they let Addai walk to keep all 4 backs of Addai, Brown, Bush, and Carter?
He'd be instead of Addai.
You mentioned in the blog today that ESPN.com is threatening to lock you out of the chatroom. Why would they do that when your chat is the best one on the site?
Give this man a prize, and make sure all the big bosses see this. (Thanks mom, that was good.)
Re: NFL Network's rankings, what did you find most disagreeable?
Honestly, I discounted it from the word go. A list that put Donovan McNabb (100th) in the top 100 players of 2010 is a joke, no?
Why does your picture look like a prison photo?
Because when ESPN asked for my picture, I only had my prison photo handy. Trust me, it's better than my license.
Who do you see the Texans targeting when free agency finally commences?
A safety and a corner. I'd chase Weddle.
Any centers or guards available in FA the Titans might target or do you think they think they're fine there? It was a glaring weakness last year.
I think they think they are fine.
So AOL\Sporting News picks the Jaguars to finish last. Is it not a given that Colts, Texans, Jaguars, Titans will be the final rankings? At least that is what my crystal ball says.
How can you make picks now, before free agency? Wouldn't the Jags have three blanks on their defensive depth chart?
What are the chances the 49ers move to the AFC? I think it's a better fit since more CA teams are in the AFC.
Zero. Travel isn't a big deal when you play once a week. Niners have rich NFC tradition.
Do you think Jason Hill could start on any other team in the AFC South? Or be a #4 on the Colts? Nice Mackey article.
I'd take him over Justin Gage, but Gage isn't in line to start.
If the Texans have one of the top QBs, WRs and RBs, then why do they consistently finish at the bottom of the division? Other teams that good or their defense is that bad?
Maybe it takes more than those three guys? Notice none of them play on defense? They didn't have a top RB until last year.
2 minute warning. Try to get some good questions in before the Chief here goes on vacation.
Yes. Please. Pretty please.
If the Texans don't sign back Vonta Leach how do you think James Casey will do at fullback do you think he could put up great blocks like Vonta
I don't love the scenario. I'd like James Casey to be catching passes, not throwing blocks.
Who killed Rosie Larsen?
I don't know, do you? Everyone should watch "The Killing."
No special call-in appearances to 104.5 next week?
OK folks, I need Paul. Thanks for stopping by and I'll give him back to you in a week or two.
Nice to hear from you, pal.
