Hi all..welcome to our weekly Hawks chat. Just got off the radio and ready to talk some Hawks. Thanks for your patience..Plenty going on...Prospects cam tomorrow, convention coming up, and of course the Hawks have made some moves and more to come as well...fire away with questions
Jesse, if the Hawks were so interested in signing veterans to short term deals at low prices, why not Jason Arnott?
I just dont think they like him...probably for several reasons...just not the right fit overall
Why did they sign so many "older" players? 37, 39, 36...I dont mind the veteran presence.....but dont you think we could have gotten the same things out of younger players, lets say a Wiz or an Eager type player?
I think its players they simply liked regardless of age..all wont play 82 games and the ones they got are pretty durable..Wiz is way too expensive for what they want and Eager got a 3 year deal..these are all one year guys for a reason Im sure..let younger players develop..allow more flexibility next year..open up money for sharp...but did they sacrifice something to get those advantages? Thats the questions we'll find out
What do you hear about an upgrade at 2nd line center?
Im not hearing much..Unless its a trade..As Ive been pointing out, like today on the radio, the Hawks might start the season with bolland as no.2 and kruger as no.3 but might not end that way...after richards I dont think they liked much out there for that position so midseason they will reasess..but that could change of course..
Do you see any issues with the arbitration of stalberg or campoli. I thought both made nice additions to the team last year, and with Brouwer and Soupy gone these are essential signings right?
I def think Campoli is valuable just not sure if he's 3 mil per season valuable but he has the right to find out through an arbitrator..its risky though unless he only cares about money...arbitration ties him to the hawks for ONE year..but then again he's a UFA..still, if he wants security and be in Chicago it behooves him to play ball..stalberg isnt essential but he's worth something on the team
Best chance to resign, Frolik, Stahlberg, or Campoli?
Frolik for sure..he has no leverage. none. the hawks can pay him a slight raise for one yr if he plays hardball so thats No. 1...the other 2 can go to a 3rd party to decide their salary..I still think Campoli will sign...not sure even why Stalberg has lasted this long..seems easy..anyway, Frolik is best answer
What kind of numbers are the RFA's looking for and what do you think they will get? Frolik had a down year, how could he be expecting a raise?
From what Ive heard campoli wants close to 3 mil..similiar to montador..frolik wants about 2.5 and im not sure on stalberg but it cant be much more than a mil. Frolik expects a raise based on his 2, 20 goal seasons and his playoffs...he deserves one just not that big
Assuming the Hawks re-sign the 3 FA's and with the addition of the 5 new FA's, do you think the pieces are now in place for the Hawks to make another run for the Cup? With Carcillo and Scott, at least nobody will be taking runs at Kane, Toews, or Sharp!
I mean I think so..I dont have anything aganst the signings unless they age real quick..the bigger thing is the rest and steps the core guys take..they arent winning it all cause of carcillo..hes just a piece...if kane and toews arent kane and toews it wont matter..Id rather have burish then any of those 4th line guys but who can say for sure they wont contribute..im vanilla on the signings..they are a little slower and thats a concern
Do you see anybody on the radar that we might sign that nobody expected? Or do you think all this money is going to be saved for the during the season?
Not much money left unless they get rid of all the rfa's..madden still might be signed or another 4th line center but thats it
Who do you predict will be the hawks breakout player this year?
I dont think Ben Smith was a fluke..his game was too rounded and he wasnt intimidated by his surroundings..Im a fan
For the prospects camp, since it is open to the public, do people just walk into Johnny's Ice House and are seats first come first serve?
Yes, as far as I know..
Jesse, What are the chances ( do you think ) that the blackhawks see two other guys ( Campoli and Stalberg ) walk off into the sunset cause of arbitration?? Is there other options out there?
The only reason it could happen is because the Hawks have some extra people for positions so if all returned someone would be cut or sent to the minors or traded so i suppose stalberg could walk or something...I just dont see campoli leaving and maybe he knows it so has leverage...campoli/campbell for montador/odonnell is slowing down the Hawks game big time
What do the defensive pairings look like for next season? How will they change if Chris Campoli wins in arbitration, and the Hawks refuse to pay?
Good question...they have 7 for 6 spots right now not including john scott...o'donnell is use to playing..it would have to come down to o'donnell or leddy on opening night...no question...injuries play a huge factor so sometimes it all works out but right now they have 7 "reg" d-men if you think leddy is...he played every game since being recalled so thats reg for me..I assume o'donnell would sit the most but Q likes those vets with leadership out there
How are you not excited about the Carcillo signing? I think he keeps his head a little more in chi then philly, but I love his on the edge style. By far my favorite pick up!
Im going to have to write a blog about the mixed reaction from people..there are plenty that would say its the worst signing of the bunch...I like mayhem so I dont mind it but I dont like bad penalties..they lose games for you so thats why Im vanilla on everything...I do like Brunette. I should say that
Was 2 yrs at $2.35 mil per less than the Hawks thought Brouwer was due or would command?
Im sure thats exactly what they thought he would get but there are factors invloved..lets say brunette replaces brouwer...its one yr not multi..plus im 100 percent sure Q lieks brunette better...q is a huge factor in all these signings..
Hi Jesse, love the coverage man, you seem to be the only reporter from espn chicago that truly bleeds for their team. On your recent article about the RFA signings, you mentioned it being Bowman's Kryptonite. Do you think this may be a problem with stan's layout/protocol on how to do business? Seems like every GM have their own blueprint blook or a "protocol" if you will, on how begin/finish a RFA negotiations. Thanks for all your dedication and coverage.
First off, thanks but I bleed for the job not the team. I love it and have a passion for it! Cant root from the pressbox though! My personal opinion is the hawks rightly (for the most part) assume chi is so favorable a destination why would someone tied to them (an RFA for example) put themselves in a position to leave..if they go to arbitration, they can end up like niemi (though it ultimately turned out good for him) or even if they accept the arbitration, its just for one year and players dont like one year deals in their prime or near it BUT I think stan and the hawks take that whoel thing for granted and its burned them a little..
Hey Jesse, I have a couple questions. 1-Who do you think will play with kane and toews this year with troy gone?2-Do you think all the free agent signings will make the team besides brunette, he will be a lock?3-Who do you think might make the team from Rockford that might not be obvious(Smith and Kruger)
Im pretty sure Sharp gets the call with 19 and 88 but if they need him at center he goes back there at some point...I do see them all making the team, Im pretty sure at least..wont play every night but unless someone is god awful I see them there (excluding Mclean of course)
Better idea: spend the majority of our cap money before the season starts, giving our players more time to gel, or see what we have and make an in-season trade? I like what we have, but would love to see Campoli back and another center.
They are going the route of saving money for in season..and it makes sense..I didnt like any top center out there after richards and you would have had to pay for them...I liek the idea of kruger and bolland getttiong their chances and then making moves..who knows, maybe they will need D or a winger so without a sure thing at a good price out there, I have no prob with this strategy
Jesse, any insight to the possible rumor continually floating around that the hawks and canadiens are working on a big trade? Possibilities?
I dont have much insight into that...My guess is MTL is making inquiries around the league since they lost 2 d-men..I dont see campoli being moved or I should say if he is, unless a puck mover comes back--its a mistake
ESPN Rumors reported the Blackhawks were talking to the Canadiens about a trade involving one of our 3 unsigned RFA's because Bowman was having trouble re-signing one of them. Do you know who that RFA is or having any other details about a Montreal trade?
Again, Im guessing Campoli but Hawks need him
Looks like the Blackhawks added some much needed grit. What are they lacking as far a team right now?
Defintely a little more at center...come playoffs, they need a godo one for hossa so bolland can do his usual thing...kruger on the 4th line at that point or someone else
do you think Chris Drury will be on the hawks team next year? He's only 34, has won a cup, and would fit nicely as the 4th line center
Im going to say no but I havent followed his situation too much...madden better chance in my opinion
Jesse Please tell me that Beach is gonna be with the hawks this year? I would love to see that kid in the Indian head sweater!
Not to start the year unless he shows something big time in camp and the hawks make room for him by moving guys
are the hawks done in free agency? And how soon do you think they sign Sharp?
I still think a 4th line center is there for the taking..sharp, early to midseason
With so many prospects in camp,do you think one may make some noise and possibly push for a dpot on the opening game roster?
I doubt it. many are high on Mark McNeill but we're always high on the new guy on the block...doesnt seem to be an opening or anyone ready to breakthrough...forget about this camp.its about training camp..even then, there were several with big camps like morin and makarov and only Leddy made it and then was sent down
Of the 6 guys the Blackhawks signed who will have the biggest impact for the team net season?
tough call...either brunette oe montador? if Pk is good it could be Montador but brunette is a machine..20 or so goals every year and goes to front of net
Who are you most looking forward to seeing at prospect camp?
I like Dyaln Olsen..might be close to being ready..Mark Mcneill getting raves..see where the Hayes brothers are in their game
Jesse, did we overpay Brent Seabrook at nearly $6M per year? For me that is All Star wages. Also, what will it take get Sharpy locked down?
Its the going rate..look at what Buff got after one year on D..its about right..i think keith and seabs bounce back with really good years..sharp in the 5-6 range as well
Could Huet be a backup this season if one of the goalies (Crawford & Salak) get hurt? Are we below the cap enough?
Obviously Niemi helped the Hawks win the Cup. But after last year, who would you say had a more impressive rookie season, Niemi or Crawford? Do you think the Hawks regret not being able to afford Niemi?
Hard to go against a guy that won the cup but crawford was the starter for longer..call it a wash? I think the hawks like what they have and I think Niemi is happy where he is making very good money
Do you think if Stalberg and Campoli force an arbitrator meeting that they will be gone regardless of the ruling simply based on the history of RFA arbitrations for the Hawks? Or does it depend on the ruling?
Definitely depends on the ruling..I dont see either one getting that far but Ive been wrong before..negotiations are taking place..
So I'm thinking a lot of these 1-year deals also tie in to the next CBA that's up in 2012. Any thought on that?
I dont think so...more to do with youth almost ready and money needed for sharp, etc. and the fact that they CAN sign tehm to one year deals cause some players really want the chance to be here if it comes down the pike for them
word on the street (aka rumor) is that kane entered rehab for a problem with nose candy, have you heard anything about this?
Really excited about the Brunette signing as he's the grinder, front of the net and corners type winger... Do you see him along side of Kane and Toews on the top line or more so with Hossa on the 2nd?
Im sure he'll move around but see him 2nd line
What role do you think Rotislav Olesz will play on the Hawks this Year? Will he even be on the roster or will they buy him out?
Unsure..Stan hasnt indicated for a sec they would buy him out but that doesnt mean they wont..simply havent heard that from anyone
Was there any interest from the Hawks in Richards? I know the price tag would have put them in a jam again, but I am curious if they ever thought of pursuing him to fill that 2nd line void.
I think for a moment it may have crossed their minds after Campbell was moved but quickly passed based on the bidding
Jesse, for my money the Hawks' biggest weakness last year was secondary scoring. Grit is nice but it doesn't put points on the board. Are any of the new additions going to be able to pick up the slack when the superstars can't find the net?
Only brunette...Stan likes Montador's upside on offense but we're not talking seabs or ketih here so Brunette is the guy
Is Jamal Mayers going to be the 4th line center? He hasn't played there regularly in 3-4 years. Do they plan on acquiring someone else? Madden perhaps?
If season started tomorrow, Mayers would prob be there..Madden has a chance of returning
One year deals give the flexibility to dump someone next year and bring back Burish in his normal role?
I'd love that. Love it
Who do you see as the 4 centers on this team at the start of the year - Toews, Bolland, Kruger, ???? What is the plan here?
Ill say Madden cause I dont know where else to go...no way on McNeill or any other prospct unless a huge surprise happens
Which former Hawk do you think is the most overpaid by their current team? My vote has to go to Buff...
Jesse - Do you see McNeil being called up to the big club at any point this year?
Never say never, depending on where he plays..mostly cause they are weak up the middle but still very doubtfull..this is an 18th pick not a top 5
As of right now (and i know a lot can happen), how do you see the lines being opening day?
Ill take a shot...10/19/88, 15/36/81, smith, kruger, frolik..bickell/mayers/carcillo...no idea where olesz fits in....maybe on that 3rd line and one of those 4th liners sits...

Do you see the Hawks re-signing Ryan Johnson? Do you agree they need a fourth line center that can win faceoffs
for some reason they haev shown no interest in Johnson..I dont know why so no on him...and yes to the 4th line/faceoff guy
Last week when I heard we signed Carcillo I happened to be on the golf course. Upon hearing of his signing my golf game went into the crapper and I lost a lot of money to some real good golfers. Jesse- what do you think of the Carcillo signing and will he fit it in well with his new teammates?
I think Q signed off it and wants some mayhem on the ice..yeah, he'll fit in I think..hawks leadershp is pretty good in that room for the most part so guys fall in line..I havent seen a 4th line guy disrupt anything...they just happy to have a job most of the time
With Mayers and Carcillo at one year, any chance we bring back Burish next year?
Im not sure he's a "Q" guy..just that feeling..Im sure people remember a few benchings in favor of others..maybe too mouthy for him..not sure..I like him..perfect fourth line guy in my opinion and good teammate
Is there any chance, if Frolik is resigned, he could figure out his faceoff problems and play as the number 2 center?
Remote chance...fill in, yes. Everyday guy? dont think so
Is there something to your commet about Q liking Brunette more than Bouwer? I could never put a finger on it but it never seemed like Brouwer was a favorite of Q. he seemed to go through droughts of mopey-ness and general malaise that I can understand Q not enjoying. Anything else we should know?
I just think Q is a typical old school (or any school I guess) coach...Browuer had confidence problems..I could see Q thinking or even saying "get over it,this is the big leagues" things like that..I think Campbell fits same category...not saying he doesnt beleive good players..I just have heard that brunette is Q's guy too
Hi Jesse, i've been hearing all sorts of things about Bolland playing on the second line. Wouldn't the hawks be better suited just to let Sharp take the draws on line two, and have bolland check the other teams top line? The Frolik-Bolland-Bickell line looked dominant during the Vancouver no-cups series.....
They have always believed Bolland has more offense than hes shown and they want a real and smart centerman for hossa..On paper thats bolland..it hasnt always worked out that way but they want to try Im sure...before he got hurt bolland was showing some offense..smartest player on the team..was told that years ago and he proves it for the most part
You mentioned bad penalties, yeah they cost your team...I will agree with you on that but Philly had leadership issues to some extent if they are shipping out their captain. I think Toews and some others will control him a bit more. Agree?
Def agree...but that kind of player is still going to cross the line..and there are times for it..he says he's learned when those times are so we'll see
That's going to do it for today..check out my blog over next couple days from prospects camp and for any other news..follow me on twitter @espnchihawks or email me at email@example.com. thanks, all, great questions...see you at camp this weekend and then convention...
