Chat with Bill Williamson

Bill Williamson
  (2:01 PM)

Hi everyone, let's get rolling.

Clifford (Vancouver, Canada)

Hey Bill, first of all love your blog! I have a question assuming that the lockout ends and we finally get back to some Football. With the youth infusion on Defense (which I totally agree with) and possibly Tebow under center what can we really expect out of the Broncos this year? I know making the playoffs this year is out of the question but that's why the games are played right!?

Bill Williamson
  (2:02 PM)

Thanks, Clifford. I think progress is what the goal should be in Denver. The playoffs are a ways off for this team. It is a young team and if the Broncos win 6-7 games and Tebow shwos he can be the quarterbakc of the future, then that would count as progress.

Jamie (Kansas)

What positions do you think KC will target once free agency gets going? Any predictions on players?

Bill Williamson
  (2:03 PM)

I'm not sure the Chiefs will be overly active. but areas they could look at include WR, OT, LB.

Chris (Iraq)

Hey Bill,My question today is about Denver. Dawkins is set to make 6 million this year. Im thinking he will restructure to around 2 million. If this happens what do you think are the chances Denver gets 2 quality DT's? I am Thinking Brandon Mebane, and Tommie Harris. If the aren't sold on Harris what do you think of Alan Branch from Arizona who is above average against the run?

Bill Williamson
  (2:04 PM)

I think Mebane is a big target of Denver's. They need a couple of DTs and getting Mebane would be a good start.

D (Portland, OR.)

In reading some of the post from the Oakland Tribune, if looks like they are lobbying for the Raiders to select Pryor in the supplemental draft. I think it might be a wise move (if they use no higher than a 4th rounder). If Pryor does not pan out as a QB, he could be converted to another position (a la Ronald Curry, Ethan Horton, Dave Casper, etc.) where they had success before. What are your thoughts

Bill Williamson
  (2:08 PM)

We've talked about it a lot. I'd hate to see Oakland use its first or third-round pick on Pryor. The Raiders don't have a second or fourth-round pick next year. If Oakland got him in the fifth, why not? I don't think he is an immediate contributor, but if he's a cheap project, it won't hurt.

B. Ski (Cleveland)

Yo Bill! If you're John Fox, who do you start at Quarterback week 1? Do you go with the fan favorite Tim Tebow or play it safe and start Orton?

Bill Williamson
  (2:11 PM)

I go with Tebow. Trade Orton and get something for him before he leaves as a free agent. This is a rebuilding team. The Broncos need to see if Tebow cnan play. If he can't, then they can go get somebody next year. But they have to find out if Tebow is the answer.

Corey (D.C.)

Do you think Jacoby Ford and Louis Murphy can be a poor man's Desean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin, with Ford playing the D-Jack role and Murphy the Maclin role?

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

I'm big on Ford and I think Murphy will be solid. I like this tandem's chances of being strong, so I'll wait on calling it a poor's man anything.

Brad (Nashvegas)

Hey Bill...just curious...what free agents do you think Al and the Raiders will target once the strike ends? Are they REALLY looking at guys like Santana Moss and Santonio Holmes?

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

I think they will try to keep their own players first before looking elsewhere.

KING Kevin (Raider Nation)

Will Schilens finally stay healthy and show us the skills he possesses on a weekly basis? Speed, Size, a few years in the game now.

Kris (CO)

How well-suited is Denver's o-line for the new coaching staff?

Bill Williamson
  (2:18 PM)

Oakland quesitoN: That's the million dollar question about Schilens.Denver question: It's not bad. The coahcing staff is fmaialr with the group and it shouldn't be a problem.

Emenem (D-town)

Chiefs got 4 players in this draft with "first round skills/abilities (Baldwin, Bailey, Houston, Hudson)." How much of an impact will this players have? Should we expect at least two of them to be impact players the way Berry was last year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:19 PM)

The Chiefs are very excited about these players. I think they will all be contributors. Baldwin will start and Hudson will start if Wiegmann doesn't come back.

Ray (New York)

Bill,Bigger make or break season, Moreno in Denver or Heyward-Bey in Oakland?

Bill Williamson
  (2:20 PM)

Greta question. It's pretty close, but I'd say DHB because Oakland has other options at WR.

Sam (Atlanta)

Bill - as a Chiefs fan who isn't sold on Jon Baldwin, how do we know he's the next Dwayne Bowe and not the next Sylvester Morris? Sure he's said the right things (Joplin efforts, getting in close with Cassel), but his exit from Pitt makes me wonder - and are we going to have to wait 3 years to see real production from him like we did w/ D Bowe...

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

We don't know. When Bowe was drafted we didn't know he wouldn't be the next Morris. That's just the way it is. But Todd Haley really likes the way Baldwin fits the offense and he has high hopes for him.

Pink (Seattle)

If Zach Miller is a FA, what are the chances he leaves?

Bill Williamson
  (2:26 PM)

There will be a lot of teams interested, but I think Al Davis will find a way to keep Miller. He is a major aprt of what Oakland does on offense.

Blake (Abilene, TX)

Are, the Chiefs finnaly going to be 100% commited to Jamaal Charles? Can he be a 2000yd rusher?

Bill Williamson
  (2:27 PM)

They are completely comitted to him, but there are durability concerns so the team will always watch his carries.

Corey ({Los, Angeles})

do u think the packers are gonna repeat

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

It's never easy to repeat, but the truth is, the Packers will be better (and probably healthier) in 2011 than they were in 2010. So, they are a major contedner, yes.

Yogi (Alaska)

Do you expect V-Jack to be a Charger this year? If not, could Sidney Rice take his place?

Bill Williamson
  (2:32 PM)

The Chargers frnachised him and the franchsie tag is expected to be part of the new CBA. So, yes, he should be a Charger in 2011.

Cole (WA)

Hey Bill, do you see the Chiefs bringing back Mike Vrabel this upcoming season? His age is a factor, but with the leadership quality he has I see him as a valuable asset. If the Chiefs don't bring him back and assuming he doesn't retire, where do you think he could possibly land? Any chance the Patriots nab him for that leadership/mentoring aspect?

Bill Williamson
  (2:33 PM)

I think the Chiefs want him back in a limited role and he wants to play. I expect back for one more year. The Chiefs love his leadership ability. He's basically another coach.

Gerry (Las Vegas)

With the o-line being overhauled in Oakland, do you think Mcfadden will have another over 1,000 yard season? He finally broke out last season....Will it continue?

Bill Williamson
  (2:36 PM)

I see McFadden getting more than 1,000 yards. He's a rising star. yes, there are changes on the line, but I still expect big things from McFadden

Leland (denver City, TX)

Is this the year AJ Smith feels pressure to go after some FAs to plug holes with established players or do they continue to struggle in the beginning with inexperienced mistakes?

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

It will be if they lose a few free agents. This is a fairly loaded roster, but if players like Weddle, Lloyd, Cooper, Siler and Clary, leave some replacements will be needed.

Dan (Denver)

B-dub:1. Matthews and Tolbert combine for 2500 yards this year?2. Yes or No--Regular Season Kicks off as scheduled.

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

1.: 2,500 rushing yards is a tough combianation. I think the Chargers would be happy if they combined for 1,800-2,000 yards.2: Yes, I think it does. But they better get a deal done soon.

Luke (Chicago)

Does malcom floyd walk? if he does, where does he go?

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

There have been reports out of San Diego that suggest he will leave. I'm not sure the Chargers want to pay him big money, but I think he's a plus player. New England has been connected to Floyd often.

Frank (Las Vegas)

Assuming Nnamdi and Huff are gone, how big of a step back does Oakland's pass defense take? Bottom tier of the league or just somewhere in the middle of the pack? Got to think opposing QBs aren't going to have much time to throw with that monster defensive line.

Bill Williamson
  (2:44 PM)

I'm not a huge Huff guy, but Asomugha is a superstar. Losing him would be a killer. Oakland could have to hope its young BS catch onto the NFL game quickly.

Mike (San Diego)

Do you think the chargers will fix their special teams problems next year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:45 PM)

They have good coaching and I can't imagine them having as many injury problems as last year. So, yes, i expect the Chargers' special teams to be much better.

Justin (CT)

Hey Bill what do you think of the chances Denver takes a run at Charles Johnson from Carolina, he has ties with Fox and is very good. We do have pressing needs at DT, but his talent is very hard to come by perhaps a FA class of Mebane and Johnson?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

I think Johnson is a player to keep on an eye for Denver. I'm sure Fox would love to get him back. SO, I think it's a possibility.

Jamal (Memphis)

Bill, any word on whether or not guys like M. Bush will become RFA in the new CBA agreement? If so and the Raiders lose him, do you see them making a move on a veteran RB to give DMC a breather now and then or sticking with the guys they have now?

Bill Williamson
  (2:51 PM)

The current expectaction is that Bush will be a restricted free agent. He was on the Non football injury list as a rookie, so he only has three NFL seasons. So, he'll likely be an unrestricted free agent next year if he doesn't sign a long-term deal before then.

Chris (Oakland)

Realistically, what would you consider a successful year for Jason Campbell?

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

16 starts, a winning record and a contract extension.

Brad (Dallas)

Which of the rookie TE's in Denver do you think is going to make the biggest impact and will Decker be a more productive player that D Thomas?

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

Well, I think Virgil Green has a chnace to play right away. I know Julius Thomas was drafted in the fourth round and Green was taken in the seventh round But Thomas, a college basketball player, is a project and Green was downgraded because he had an old injury. But he is fine and ready to go.Thomas will likely be out for, at elast, the first half of the season, so Decker has a chance to help sooner. But if Thomas can ever find his health, I think he can be a fine player.

Rick (Denver)

Hey Bill, Why is everyone so down on Knowshon Moreno. He averaged over 4 yards a cary last season and scored a decent amount of TDs.

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

Look at his explosive runs. There just aren't enough of them.

Reggie (Orlando)

Chances Al Davis pulls a shocker and resigns Nnamdi? Is it even a possibility given some of the deals they made with guys(Routt, Seymour, Wimbley) before the work stoppage?

Bill Williamson
  (2:58 PM)

It's always possible. I won't count Al out until Nnamdi signs elsewhere.

Jason (Kansas City)

Are the Chiefs going to actively be looking for a no.3 WR(if J Baldwin pans out) in free agency?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

I think it's very possible. Arizona slot receiver Steve Breaston could be a possibility. He played for Chiefs' coach Todd Haley when Haley was the Cardinals' OC.

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

Great hour, folks. Talk to you in two weeks. Have fun.
