Hello all and welcome to another fantasy sports chat session, All-Star break style! Plenty to talk about today as the midseason fantasy rankings have been posted, and we look ahead to the final 10 weeks. Also, if football is on your mind - and when isn't it - then fire away. Thanks for showing up and let's have some fun...
I noticed that you ranked Starlin Castro over Pablo Sandoval. When you even out the at-bats, the stats seem to strongly favor Panda. Did you rank Castro higher only because SS is a weaker position?
I like Panda, which is why he made my top 100. Castro is a shortstop, though, and that makes a difference. I have a blog entry soon that points out many middle infielders ranked better for me than for others. It's odd!
I'm a little concerned about the recent chatter regarding J. Zimmermann's pending innings cap. I've offered him, along with P. Hughes and M. Melancon, for D. Hudson and D. Ackley. What side of this trade would you rather reside? 12-team, mixed league.
I'm concerned, too, but it's actually a good thing, especially if you have him in a keeper format or like the Nats! Yeah, I would make that trade fast, in part because Hudson is just as good as Zimm, but also I really like Ackley.
summer of 2012 still a reasonable projection for me?
I doubt it. I think we might see him debut late next season, but this is a teenager. Whether he has the ability is not really the debate but he has to be ready emotionally as well. And are the other Nats ready for him!
Digging deep here in 16 team mixed. Please rank for ROS - Heisey, Schierholtz, L Scott, G Jones.
My fave leagues are the deep ones, to be honest. Just doesn't seem to be too difficult to lose A-Rod in a 10-teamer and see Eric Hosmer available for my corner spot as a replacement. I go in the order you gave; I can't say Heisey gets a legit chance to play regularly, but I don't think Schierholtz is special, and Scott is hurt. He'd be first if healthy.
12 team mixed. Need to drop one to open a spot, Moustakas or the hot Daniel Murphy for the second half? Ryan Roberts is on the wavier wire as well.
Ryan Roberts is gonna have a 20/20 season. He's still playing, and playing well. No, he won't hit for average, but I don't think Moustakas will either. Murphy just doesn't have much power, nor speed.
What do you see ROS for Gordon Beckham and Travis Snider?
I like Snider better, but considering one plays second base and the other outfield is a factor. Still, Snider is a legit hitter with power and run producing capability. Beckham, despite his nice rookie season, doesn't appear to be that guy.
What do you think the chances are that SF trades for Beltran? Also, if the Giants trade for a Beltran level hitter, who would they likely have to give up in return - prospects or current players - or both?
I don't know how much the Mets can get for him, but I think the Red Sox will get Beltran and he'll be even better back in the AL. I doubt the Mets want big league ready players that cost much in return.
Erik Bedard or Corey Luebke for ROS? Both available on waiver wire. Established talent who is ouchy a lot or hyped newbie?
Like them both, but you have to go Bedard there. He is on the DL, but it's not like the other times. I really think the Mariners wanted to give his arm a rest (not that Bedard doesn't have some minor knee thing going on). Luebke is good and like all Padres pitchers warrants some attention.
Eric: Should I hold onto Pineda and expect just as good numbers in the 2nd half or sell him high now?
I don't think Pineda will have a poor second half, but I worry about some rookie regression and an innings limit. The M's say there's no limit, but when they're 10 games out on Sept. 1 they will change their mind. I'd sell high if I could get a lot. It's not hard to find decent pitching.
Football...saw your guys' Mock Draft 1.0, and I've been doing some of my own...Blount went 2nd round...ESPN panel has him like 42...what say you?
Well, I wouldn't have chosen him in the second round, but I also think the fifth round is way too late. Probably late third for me, in the 25-29 range.
Where did your crazy Heath Bell to LA Angels trade come from? and why wouldn't he be there closer if they traded for him?
Tried to think outside the box, and the Angels do have money and they can win now. And Walden has been so good, I think the Angels could rent Bell for 2 months and he would be a terrific eighth inning guy. You know, the eighth inning is darn important as well! Teams have won World Series with a better eighth inning guy than ninth...
What do you see in Joey Bats ROS that none of your colleagues do?
Like 20 percent more home runs over the past year plus than anyone else. And with the walks I do think the batting average can be sustained. My colleagues didn't hate him by any means, but I think this is all legit. He's special now. Hard to believe.
Football! Started doing some mock drafts - Romo is ranked as a mid 4th rounder....if I haven't got my elite Qb by then and I have 2 RBs and a WR, do you bite? Or keep stockpiling and go Freeman/Ryan a round or 2 later?
I see both sides to this, and I probably keep going with RB/WR material if good stuff is out there. I do like Romo, but Ryan and Freeman are nearly as enticing. I dunno, each draft is kind of different, you feel your way through. That's why it's fun.
I noticed that nobody, but nobody, put Edwin Encarnacion in their top-250. Is he worth consideration as a high risk, high upside guy for the second half? Or would rather just have Headley or McGehee (both available in my league)
Yeah, I didn't really consider it. Not enough power to offset batting average and the potential to simply not play. Could he someday hit 30 homers? Sure, but this year, I doubt it.
Should I go with Putz or Hernandez during this scoring period?
I doubt Putz is playing in the next 10 days.
Who has more saves ROS...A.Chapman or J. Rauch?
I say Rauch. I know everyone rips F.Cordero, but he's still their guy and Dusty is nothing if not loyal. And it's one bad week for Cordero, he was fine until July.
If the Angels wanted to win so bad, wouldn't they just keep Trout and sit down one of the old guys? Or even Bourjos, who really isn't that much of a defensive improvement over Trout
Disagree. Bourjos is elite defensively... Trout is good, but not elite. And it's not easy to sit a guy making $15 million, and ALL are hitting. Abreu walks and bats third, Wells is coming on, Hunter is fine. None can be sat. Apples and oranges here. The Angels need relief, not outfielders. I know we all want Trout to get 300 at-bats, but I think he falls short of 30.
Espinoza or Prado ROS?
Love Espinosa... the power and speed is legit. If you need batting average, look elsewhere, like Prado!
Nobody knows the trouble I've seen.....Why everyone so down on me? Am I a top 5 3b now and for keeper leagues?
Having a tough season and with the health concerns and a .250 batting average, and worse since he came off the DL, I see why. Probably 4th or 5th for keepers though.
With Rivera getting traded to the Dodgers, does Eric Thames value go up to Mixed league status?!?
Not really. And Rivera was off the Blue Jays at least a week ago, designated for assignment, so nothing has changed there. Thames can hit, I wrote about him recently. Don't think he's a top 60 outfielder yet though.
Yo E! I have Nunez, Guerra, Adams, Nathan and Chapman as my RP core. Over/Under 30 saves from this crew ROS?
Nunez is a legit closer, could get 15 saves on his own here, but the others... I see Guerra getting saves, perhaps 10, but I really don't think Nathan overtakes Capps anytime soon. And no on Adams and Chapman. Adams is just as likely to be dealt as Heath Bell, maybe more so.
Any help for a guy trying his hardest to sell J. Zimm and can't do it even for pennies on the dollar?
His final 50 innings should be really good, so that's a positive.
Would you trade Joey Bats for Doc and Crawford? Keeper league and Joey Bats on the cheap ($8) however going for the title this year.
Yeah, I can't argue against that, despite the Bautista love. Halladay and Crawford, wow! And worry about keepers in December, not now. Flags fly forever!
A few of the experts still had Jordan Zimmerman ranked high. Is this because they don't believe the innings cap?
I suppose. But the Nationals seem clear on this one. Hey, if it's 50 great innings, then I underranked him.
Aren't people jumping the gun a little on Freeman? I don't think you win your league with him as your starting qb. If you wait for freeman you might as well wait longer and draft somebody like fitzpatrick or kolb.
I think Freeman is a borderline starting fantasy QB for a 10- or 12-team league. The numbers say so. And he shouldn't get considerably worse. Just get a good backup... Fitz and Kolb probably aren't safe enough.
What does the Eric Karabell crystal ball say about Jason Heyward in the second half?
Tough to predict nice things with the season he is having. Has that look of a guy that clearly isn't healthy but thanks to his teammates ripping him he's playing anyway. And the stats take the hit.
Do you buy that I'll make a huge jump in numbers this year..what say you to 50-750-4?
No, not really. But dare to dream! The Packers could go in other directions at wide receiver, or keep their guys. Too early to tell.
Need speed. Bonifacio legit? Love that he can play SS/3B. Or should I go Rajai or Crisp? Which one?
Bonifacio is not a great player by any means, despite the eligibility. Crisp is the one you want, then Davis.
you have Espinosa ranked above Rasmus. Is that because of the position scarcity, or you think Danny puts up better numbers?
Probably both! Rasmus should be a lot better than he is, but until he shows it...
Bonifacio - Bona Fide or Bonafacio?
He is what he is, and it's not bonafide!
Would you trade Ben Revere for Ichiro for the second half of the year?
Oh my. Yes, yes a thousand times yes!
Tell me if this trade is fair: Pujols/Hafner for Pedroia/Dunn (the big texas donkey)/League.
Well, it seems a tad one sided, since one of the players is a consensus top 5 guy and another one of the players is just awful this season.
Are you really taking Jamaal Charles 4th this year? I see a harder (1st place) schedule, and we really should know better than to listen to Todd Haley...
Tell me who you like better? It's not always an endorsement for the player, but after AP, Foster and CJ, who?
Do you believe in Dempster ROS? you like him more than Vogelsong, Luebke, De la Rosa or Lewis?
I like Vogelsong more, but Dempster should be fine and should get plenty of strikeouts.
logan morrison up or down for the rest of year?
I was the only one to have LoMo in my top 100... which I thought was odd.
Is Felipe Paulino worth sticking by? K's usually don't lie right?
Well, walks are a problem, and the team behind him isn't so good, but someday Paulino could be a major option.
Don't mean to be a hater, but isn't it weird and kind of pointless to talk about football at all since there is no guarantee of a season and we haven't even had free agency yet?
You're a hater. They're gonna play. They're not dumb people, and if they don't play, with all they have to lose, it's simply dumb. But to evaluate position battles or where free agents go, I'm not really doing that. Tony Romo's situation won't be changing.
Eric, kindly tell Scott from Northglenn, that Charles was great against the RAVENS in the playoffs last year. He will be fine. Draft him top him top 5 and be happy...
Or you can tell him!
Superior studio bell: Stephania or Kara____ ?
I've got multiple ... well, I think all the bells are just awesome. Can't wait to see the new radio/podcast studio...
I think you're way off on your love for Bautista. Didn't you know that the homerun derby ruins people's swings? Joey Bats is toast!
LOL! Yeah, if Adrian Gonzalez and Cano combine for only 4 home runs the rest of the year, then maybe I will believe.
Is Elliot Johnson going to take over the SS role in Tampa? I want some cheap steals.
Nah, he looks overwhelmed. I thought he could hit in the bigs, but it appears that is not the case. Rays need a SS... luckily they are stocked in the minors.
There is no statistical evidence to support the claim that the homerun derby changes swings. In addition, Bautista did not change his swing, which is one of the reasons he barely hit any HRs.
Well there you go!
Lance Berkman will finish the year with a BA of ________, _______ homeruns, and _________ RBIs
Oooh, I do like this game! OK, let's say he hits .294 (yes, it goes up!) with 37 home runs and 111 RBIs. I loved Berkman all winter and he's on myriad teams for me... glad I took the chance he didn't forget how to hit.
Is Brett Anderson going to be fantasy relevant the ROS??
It would surprise me if he was. If Oakland could contend, different story.
Will you marry me?
Unless you're Jennifer Aniston, no.
need a ss, what do you think of cozart?
Certainly looks the part defensively, but I do worry about him hitting enough to keep Dusty happy. Dusty not a big fan of the kids, you know. Reds could be trading for some Orlando Cabrera type.
Do you think Josh Johnson comes back this year?
I do, but no guarantees that he makes more than 10 starts. Be careful here. Again, this would be different if the Marlins were over .500, which thanks to June they certainly are not.
5x5 ROS....Ogando or Scherzer
Yeah, I am at "work" too! Scherzer. I did not rank Ogando well at all... the innings and potential for injury is going to be a problem.
Will you marry me? And tell me who you prefer ROS: Bumgarner, Liriano, Bedard, Phil Hughes?
Yes I will!! Let's go in the exact order you named them. Bumgarner is good, and getting better. I could be persuaded to drop Liriano behind Bedard, but neither is a lock.
Jennifer Aniston? She's like the Adam Dunn of celebrities, maybe she used to hit 40 HR per year, but I think she's toast now.
I hear she hit a home run in that Bad Bosses movie. I will see it. She's not Adam Dunn! She's more Adrian Beltre, consistent and powerful wherever she is...
A healed David Wright can hit .275, with 10 HR, and 35 RBIs over the last two months, yes?
In theory, sure. Big wild card, though. U will say yes, Wright does this!
Werth for Hellickson?
Depends on need, but in a vaccuum, sure. Werth isn't going to simply hit .330 the rest of the way, though he has enough pop and speed to matter. If you need Ks and ERA, make the move.
Can Vernon Wells keep up his recent hot streak?
Yeah, I don't know why people don't like him. He hit .273 with 31 home runs a year ago. He's fine.
I get frustrated with owners who refuse to trade or even entertain a fair deal. How can I overcome this?
Find a new league? You can't make someone trade. People think if someone doesn't accept their "fair" offer it's a sign of deeper problems... sometimes people just like their teams. I don't trade much at all, unless I really need to.
EK - would you trade CarGo ($10) for Kemp ($29) and Panda ($10) in a keeper league? I'm trying to win now. thanks.
That should help, so yes.
I have to admit I have a mancrush on Zach Stewart. Am I in the minority?
I'm not here to judge, I promise.
Do I hold on to Chris Sale in hopes he starts next year?
Hold on to a big arm, but he could easily close as well.
If you had a chance to win it all this year in a 12 team keeper league would you trade Jordan Z and Josh Johnson for Grienke?
Seems a bit one-sided, no? But in theory yes, do what you have to do. I find that even when the cupboard is bare for future seasons, it's not difficult to fill it, if you know what I mean. It's not like Greinke is a bad keeper!
Who do you trust more to keep in football, Steve Johnson or Austin Collie and do you expect either to be at least top 15?
Can't say I'd keep either, but Johnson over Collie. Less competition in Buffalo, but also in the back of my mind I am concerned about Peyton a bit.
How big is the difference between Russell Martin and I ROS?
If one hits .210 and the other .275, then it's large. Go Wieters.
Should I sell high on Jurrjens?
He won't finish with a sub-2.00 ERA with that K rate, but I don't expect he will be Jason Marquis the rest of the year either. Depends on the offer,
In your opinion, what are the odds Heath Bell is traded?
75 percent. And 65 percent on Mike Adams. It makes sense for the Padres to act.
Would you have ranked Reyes higher if you had known he was only going to be out until the 22nd?
No. I knew that. I just think he's somewhat of a risk, though obviously not too much. If he was 100 percent healthy, probably in my top 5 overall.
Wish the Reds would trade for Hanley Ramirez!
Yeah, I'm not seeing that.
Do you still eat Tasty-Kakes? And if so, what's your favorite? (I'm partial to butterscotch Krimpets.
Read my mind.
BTW, I am a cat and have trouble typing without thumbs.
Very odd chat today.
HanRam last two weeks have been great. Thoughts on him ROS?
Ranked him ninth overall. The old Hanley is back.
Smoak or Freeman ROS?
Freeman for sure. Not seeing much from Smoak of late.
Matt kemp will finish the year with a BA of ________, _______ homeruns, and _________ RBIs
I will say .294 with 35 home runs and 41 steals. Awesome season!
If K-Rod gets dealt, who are you rolling the dice with, Isringhausen or Parnell?
One would think the Mets would go with the younger fellow, and trade Izzy as well.
Carlos Beltran will be traded to the ___________ .
New Red Sox right fielder. And he'll be terrific.
_____________ will be the next player to win the triple crown.
Hasn't happened in my lifetime, so I will say the next person to do it hasn't been born yet. It's tough to do!
Sounds like Madson will be ready to go right after the ASB, safe to drop Bastardo?
I suppose, but isn't it nice to own a reliever with a sub-1.00 ERA when it's not a fluke?
Giants will win the pennant with a good 2nd half?
Giants will make the playoffs. Their October series with the Phillies should be memorable...
___________ will be Jose Reyes's home next year
Wasn't Ogando supposed to break down months ago?
No, I think we planned on July all along.
Why no love in the rankings for Utley? He was top 10 prior to injury and he's back now.
You wanted me to rank him better than 50? Wow, tough crowd!
Kemp's hitting .313 right now, you've got him at .294 for the season. You're thinking he's more a .270 hitter than anything else the rest of the way?
I think there is a bit of regression on the way, but not much, and he offsets it with counting numbers...
_________ is Twins closer next year.
Is Lidge with the Phillies next year? Also: You guys are crazy -- Peanut Butter Tandy Kakes all the way!
Read my two closer blogs today.. Lidge is in the AL next year... and really, all Tastykakes rock!
OK, with that my time is unfortunately up. Thanks so much for showing up and asking good questions, hope you enjoyed yourself and learned a lot - or at least were entertained - and have a great day!
