With A-Rod on the DL, do you think bringing up Laird to share 3B time with Nunez, releasing Andruw Jones and calling-up Montero and Dickerson is the move that should be made?
I think that is a possibility, but Laird has only been OK at Triple-A. I don't think Montero is getting called up anytime soonIf it were me, I would stick with Nunez at third with A-Rod out. In this video I said so here: http://espn.go.com/newyork/hot/?id=6768578
Hi Andrew, is there any time-table for the potential returns of Damaso Marte and Pedro Feliciano. I'd love to see the Yanks go out and get a lefty in the bullpen not named Boone Logan but a return from either of these guys would be just as good.
Feliciano is starting to lightly throw, but no one seems to think he has a good chance of coming back. Marte could be ready by September. But again it is doubtful he can be an effective reliever this year. The Yankees signed J.C. Romero today. He will be in the minors and will get a look
I cant believe Jeter skipped the all-star game. I thought he was a perfect roll model until he went and pulled some crap like that.
No one is perfect. Even Jeter. The perfect thing to do would have been to attend, but as I said in a column in the other day, it is better for the Yankees that he had these three days off and now is rested going into the second half.
How likely are the Yankees to land a top notch reliever like a Heath Bell?
Unlikely. They look as Rafael Soriano as their big right-handed relief addition. If he can pitch well, then suddenly they could have Ro-So-Mo (Robertson, Soriano and Mariano) at the end of games.
Is JC Romero a good pickup? Is he better than Boone Logan?
Well, Davis, there will be plenty of Yankee eyes in your neck of the woods to find. Romero will pitch at Scranton with a chance to probably complement Logan. Logan did pitch better before the break.
Now that Clemens has some free time, any chance that the Yanks sign him. He's got to be at least a few years younger than Colon!
Andrew, some have suggested that the Yankees trade for a veteran 3B until A-Rod returns from the DL instead of sticking with Nuneeeeeeeeee. Is this a smart move? And who would the Yankees give up and pursue?
I guess they could pick up someone like Melvin Mora, a stopgap guy. (BTW, I love Mora, but now he is just a stopgap). But I think Nunez gets a chance to play a lot.
Do you see Cano having a much better second half than first? He'll have an opportunity to bat cleanup in ARod's absence and has seemingly gone away from the plate discipline that he had improved on last year.
Robbie is so hard to figure out and is probably because we all expect so much from him. He plays so fluidly he sometimes looks like he is not trying.I do think he might be ready to take that next stop. He wants it, I think.
Is there anyone out there that is a legit replacement for Cashman if he leaves or is he one the "must signs" this winter?
There are plenty of people who could do the job. The job is different than when George Steinbrenner was involved. Yes, Prez Levine and the Steinbrenner Sons did overrule Cashman on Soriano, but usually they stay out the way.
after Jeter retires, do you think Robbie Cano will be the Captain? If not, who?
Interesting.I think it is possible. If you think three years from now, there could be a lot of discussion on that if Cano keeps putting up big numbers and plays the right way.
Who will be the Next New York Yankees Player to reach 3,000 or More Hits once Derek Jeter Retires from Baseball?
A-Rod. Could happen before Jeter retires.
Yankees trail Boston by 1.5 in East but lead Wild Card, will the Yankees make playoffs as East Champs or Wild Card? Mets sitting 7.5 behind Braves for wild card do they have any chance for playoffs given their record at home?
Yanks will win the wild card. East goes to Boston.
Given the fact that ARod is having knee survey, there is a chance that his mobility will be compromised when he gets back. As a result, he might be our full-time DH so should the Yanks get more help at 3B?
That is a good thought. That is the one way I see the Yanks make a trade for third baseman. If there is a top notch, younger guy who could split time at third with A-Rod as A-Rod slowly becomes the team's DH starting next year.
Hey Andrew. Quick question regarding the ASG. How come Russ Martin didn't see any action? Obviously the fans wanted to see him play since they voted for him. How come he wasn't worked in somehow?
They like to save a catcher in case of injury
I don't like how home field advantage for the world series goes to the winner of the All Star Game. It should be an exhibition game, or better yet gone since quite honestly I prefer skills competitions like the Derby more. Your thoughts?
I think the Derby would be just as good as the All-Star game. It is silly that the All-Star game decides home field, but that is how they designed it.
Why do I keep hearing rumors about the Yankees scouting Alfanso Soriano? With Posada swinging the bat well lately I do not think we have room for Alfanso or need him
I don't know what they would do with Soriano. If the Cubs ate all his money, then maybe. If not, I can't really see it.
do you think that the yankees should trade for another starting pitcher?
I think they should, but I don't think it is that realistic because there won't be big-time starters available and will they be better than Bart, Freddy, Phil or Ivan? Probably not.
How come Larry Rothschild doesn't get more credit for the job the pitching staff has done this year?
You know. I might write something on that. Toronto is where Eiland took his leave last year.I think it is largely because they are veteran guys who have done well. He gets some credit for A.J, but no one is ever sure about that guy.
Jeter- every company has a bit of "mandatory fun", things they expect to payback to community, business, etc. Isn't the ASG a way the players "give back" to the sport in this way? Confused why he wouldn't have made a token showing(one inning), let MLB have their day, let the fans have their moment, and made the MLB product(which he benefits by) better. I understand the Yankees pay his salary, but don't the fans and MLB also indirectly allow him and others to make ridiculous money? An odd Jeter moment in my opinion.
I want the other way on my opinion, but I cede all your points.Very logical. A little more context, though, about when the decision was made. It was made before 3K. Jeter has struggled all year and it appeared he would to 3,000. If he didn't get to 3K before the break, all the All-Star talk would be about how he is through.
I've been reading that when Hughes was coming up his strikeout pitch was a nasty curve, but he switched his grip to a more knuckle-curve once he got to the bigs and is has not been the same swing and miss pitch, is it true he has been working on going back to his original grip?
My buddy, Mark Hale from the Post, had a story about the other day. I'm going to ask Phil about it when I see him later.
Do you think the Yankees will make an agressive push for Ubaldo Jimenez if the Rockies make him avalible?
Umm yes, but I don't think the Rox would trade him. Even with his sruggles.
Looking way ahead here but do you see any big offseason moves either in free agency or trades?
The interesting thing is: Where do the Yankees improve? They are really set along the infield and if they changed catchers next year, I would think it would they would go with either Montero or Romine. If you bring the OF back, I don't see where you add. That said, I think they will make a trade to shake things up
What was worse- Jeter skipping the All Star game or missing Bob Sheppard's funeral?
I think the funeral, because he has made such a big deal about having Sheppard's voice played for his at-bats and he is the captain. I think he should have made arrangements on that one.
(When) will we see Nova gain this year?
I think sooner than later. Someone will get hurt. They always do and Nova will be the guy.
Regarding Martin and the All Star game, he told Ron Washington to Play Wieters instead of himself since this was Wieter's first all star game. He volunteered to be the Emergency catcher, to me this says alot about Russell Martin as a person.
He seems like a good guy.He was on my flight from Phoenix. He was in coach, window seat across from me. Very nice to all fans around him.Robertson and Granderson were in first. Martin got his ticket too late.
You've been a sportswriter for a significant amount of time. Do you like the direct contact you can have with fans now (like this chat)? Or do you prefer the days when the relationship was more distant?
I like it for the most part. Hearing from the crazies who swear at you, I could do without it. It doesn't bother me. I just ignore it.The smart people who have intelligent things to add are great though. And I would say that is 98 percent of the people. The 2 percent are loud.
Would anyone but Jeter get this kind of scrutiny for taking one ASG off? How many years did Manny fake sick?
A-Rod would. They can't complain about it, though. If you want the endorsements, etc, that comes with being a megastar, this comes with it.
Do you think by holding Montero down in the minors that the Yankees are hurting his development? He seems major league ready with the bat and with Russel Martin arbitration eligable the yanks will probably bring him back next year. Also, do you think his trade value will drop the longer he stays in the minors?
Al, I don't think Montero is major-league ready. There aren't many non-Yankee spinners who think he can catch and he hasn't hit the ball that well at Triple-A this year.I think people have this vision that he will be a better player than Posada in his prime and there is no real evidence yet of that. The key word there is yet.
Do you think the trend of teams locking up their up and coming stars to team friendly deals has helped to dry up the trade market a bit?
Yup and the wild card puts more teams in contention.
How different would your feelings be about the Yanks making a trade for a 3B if The Boss was still alive and running things?
He would change everything, but not necessarily for the good. Adding doesn't necessarily mean getting better.
Hasn't too much been made of Jeter skipping the ASG? This is the first time he's skipped on something like this, and he likely truly is emotionally exhausted. If he'd gone, without 3K that's what the talk would be about, him not getting it. If he'd gone with 3K, which was the situation, all the talk would still be about 3K and trying to put him in the spotlight despite all the other All-Stars there. He couldn't win either way
Last point are basically the exact words someone close to Jeter said to me. I agree with that.
Have the Yanks put ARod on the DL officially yet? Cashman is killing my fantasy chances here...
I'll mention it to him to make a move for Dave.
That's going to do it. For the questions I didn't get too, sorry. Wally is back on the chat next week.I appreciate hearing from you all.
