Hello chatters. What's on your mind?
Other than money is there anything that JGR can offer Carl Edwards that he could not get where he is now?
Possibly a stable sponsor in Home Depot. But that money part is a big deal. And he also might want to work with Zippy. That could be quite a combo.
At first I thought Carl was going to stay at Roush, but the longer it goes on the more I think he is going to Gibbs. Lets say Carl does go to Gibbs. How do you think Carl going over there would affect the communication between Kyle, Joey, and Denny?
I don't think it would hurt it. And frankly, I don't know it's always buddy-buddy now with Kyle and Denny.
terry,my family is considering attending the spring bristol race. any sugggestions?
Give yourself plenty of time to get in and out of the facility. If you are sitting up high, take some binoculars. It's way up there. And it's extremely loud at BMS because the bowl shape holds in the noise on that small track, but it is something to see.
hey terry do you see things turning around for tony stewart after his 2nd place finish in new hampshire and what do you think his chances are of making the chase
Pretty good. Tony tends to turn it up an notch in this part of the season. He's going to two tracks where he usually excels _ Indy and Watkins Glen. Last weekend was great momentum for SHR.
terry, with a weekend off what are your weekend plans?
Stay here at the Palazzo de Blount on Puget Sound, maybe grills some beef, have a few cocktails and smoke a cigar or two on my back deck.
terry, having drivers change teams would be good for nascar right?
I don't know if it's good or bad, but it's also interesting when top drivers go to a new team. If Carl leaves Roush, it could cause a domino effect of guys moving elsewhere.
How much longer do we have to put up with the seemingly senile Bruton Smith? That Friday press conference was an embarrassment to NASCAR. Is his son any better?
Bruton misjudged the seriousness of the Kentucky problems. he came in as his usual bombastic self at New Hampshire, which was a big mistake. He should have fallen on his sword and been much more apologetic or not said anything. I'm guessing he learned something from how that speech was received. Marcus isn't the showman his dad is, but in this case, that would have been better.
Carl Edwards contract negotiations got me thinking. How much of the race "winnings" do the drivers actually receive? Do they have a set salary, and then earn a percentage of the winnings every week with the rest going to the team?
Drivers have contracts just like other pro athletes that pays them a certain amount of money over several years. As for the purse, they typically keep about 40 percent of it.
Why is it that when the media talks about how many wins a driver has, they only mention the number of Sprint Cup wins that driver has but when its Kyle Busch, they include his minor league stats towards his total? Is this a case of the media trying to force feed something on the fans that they don't want to accept? Or is the media desperate to get past the "Junior Era" of the sport and move on to someone new?
I haven't done that Chris. I think this 100-win thing is way overblown. Look, I think Kyle is the most talanted driver in all of motorsports, but I don't count his 78 wins in the minors, just like I don't count the homers ARod hit in the minors or the games Roy Halladay won in the minors. And at least those guys got their minor-league totals before they made it to the big leagues.
Will we ever see Elliott Sadler in a Sprint Cup Series car again? Or is he content to cash checks in the Nationwide Series?
Elliott wants to get back to Cup, but for now, he's knows the best way to do it is to win the NW title and a few races along the way.
If Dale jr gets booted out of the chase, will the nation blame Harvick and Jimmie for taking those wins from him early in the season at Martinsville, Dega and Charlotte?
I'm sure his legion of fans will blame all sorts of things. But the truth is the 88 team will only have themselves to blame.
Chances the 24 wins 2 of the next 5 races?
Not very good, but I don't think those chances of good for almost anyone with the fact that Cup has seen so many different winners this year _ 13 in 19 races.
who decides on how long mike helton stays president of nascar?Because him telling kevin not to touch kyles car or he'd be parked really sent me reeling.Whatever happened to "boys have at it"
Actually, I was happy to hear this. It was the first time that I thought NASCAR probation actually meant something.
Hi Terry, for the money CE is likely asking isn't he kind of a risk in terms of performance? The guy has shown a history of either dominating or being "completely" off. I know he's popular, but he seems just a hair under the greatness of Gordon, Stewart, Johnson and Kyle have displayed.
Kyle and Edwards have the same # of Cup titles _ 0. Edwards is a top driver who also is great with sponsors. He is a dream pick for any team.
Terry, we should have a nice weekend on the Sound for a change. Your plans sound great. I'd like to extend by best to Ed Hinton. Will we be hearing from him again this season? Or will it be a "see you next year"?
Ed will be back at the Brickyard, cranking out columns.
Jr.has just a few bad weeks right
A few too many at this point. He has to turn things around or he'll be outside looking in when the Chase starts.
Do you suspect will see other crew chief changes with other drivers who've underperformed so far this season?
Very possible. The reason we see so many of these this time of the year is the Chase. And now with the wildcard, more teams are contending for those spots than ever before. Sponsors want in the Chase because of the added exposure it brings, so team owners want to show sponsors they are doing everything they can to get there. That usually means it's the CC who takes the fall, just like the manager in baseball of the head coach in football.
What is Plan D for Mr. Hendricks now that the #88/Knaus/Stevie experiment has failed?
I don't think they believe it has failed. As of today, but those teams would make the Chase. One thing that is up for debate is whether this combined pit crew deal is working of guys trying out for spots every week.
Any Vickers/Red Bull updates? If Edwards bolts for JGR, is Trevor a lock for the 99 or would Roush look at Vickers for the 99?
I think he would look at Bowyer. But Carl leaving would open up a lot of options for several teams.
Terry, do we have to drink anytime Junior is mentioned in these chats like we do with the Live Race Casts? If so, I might need to call a cab to head back to the Boars Nest this evening.
Yes I do, but I'm drinking a Starbucks, so it's only caffeine overload.
How bout a JGR-RFR drivers swap? Joey for Carl?
I wouldn't exactly call that a fair trade Bob. Not gonna happen.
is the 88 going to have different sponsors with the contract extension?
I think both sponsors will return in some capacity, but others could be involved as well.
What would be worse for NASCAR? another #48 championship or another Kentucky debacle?
Very interesting question, but I'll go with Kentucky. Another event like that one in the Blue Grass state and Kentucky's Cup days are over. JJ winning again would turn off some fans, no doubt, but it also would be an amazing achievement.
How happy are you to see Allen Bestwick back in the play by play booth? Best move ESPN has done for NASCAR since they took NASCAR back.
Allen will do a great job. He's a pro's pro. And I'm also happy for Nicole and her promotion. I can tell you for a fact that Nicole works very hard and what she does.
You live in Puget Sound Terry. Wasahington St. right? I bet you rack up the frequent flier miles!
That I do Greg. My body has a lot of time zone issues. But I love the Pac NW.
isnt the 48 just a chase system champion? How many championships should he really have if nascar didnt come up with that junk?
I completely disagree. JJ may be the most underrarteed driver i NASCAR history, and Chad is the best crew chief in the business. They shouldn't be blamed because they played the system to their advantage. If it wasn't in place, I believe they would have adjusted their strategy and still won a lot of championships.
Where will Carl Edwards end up?
If you are asking me to guess today, I would say Gibbs. But it still could go either way.
If Carl leaves Roush for Gibbs, who do you think would drive the #99 Bayne or Stenhouse?
Neither. I'm not sure they think either guy is ready to tackle that task in 2012.
How would Carl and Kyle work as teammates?
Mark Martin told me something vwey interesting a few years ago about teamamts. He said, "I don't have teammates. I have drivers that drive for the same team I do." That's says a lot. Carl and Kyle would do whatever it takes to make the organization better.
LOL. Who would get to win every race in the 2012 Nationwide Season if Carl and Kyle were teammates?
Ugh. What a horrible scenario that would be.
Other than bringing Go Daddy $$, how can Danica joining SHR be considered improving the team?
Having R&D from a third Cup car is bound to help. It's more info for all three to share.
if carl goes to gibbs where do u see u joey goin , he is still a rly good driver and his populairty is getting bigger
It would depend on whether JGR has a fourth primary sponsor. If I'm the CEO of Home Depot, signing Carl is a no brainer.
Carl has to be making a decision pretty soon wouldn't you agree Terry?
Yes. Some people are under the false impression that he can just wait until the end of the season. Not true. Marketing plans have to get started and new ad campaigns must get going. the end of the season is way too late.
How can you not count wins in the "minors" for Kyle. Some of those wins came when he was up and comer just like everyone else. How do you differentiate?
Because it's still the minors, no matter when he did it. Lumping those in with Cup is wrong in my opinion.
With changes that Nascar has made over the last year (wild card, simple points system, qualifying line-up) and the constant talk regarding JJ and crew mastering the Chase. Could you see Nascar develope a different "set" of races for the Chase?
That's easier said than done. Weather is a factor at many tracks and changing one date has an affect on several others. So they can't just make wholesale changes to the Chase. But switching out one of two every year is a good idea.
Do you still predict that Jr. will win a race this year and make the chase or has that prediction vanished?
I'll stick with it, and he could win a race without making the Chase, or vice versa. So I think the odds of getting one of those right is pretty good.
Where does UPS end up next year? With Clint Bowyer at RCR?
Or maybe with Clint at RFR. Anything is possible at this point.
I remember hearing that Junior was close to a new deal with Hendrick, did that deal ever go through? Or did it fall through?
Hasn't been signed, but it's going to happen.
Heard Bruton mention lights at NHMS, is there a chance of a future night race in Loudon?
Possibly, but I think Bruton has much bigger issues to deal with at the moment.
If Junior didnt make the chase would the season be a total failure?
Not if he wins a couple of races.
Im attending my first Pocono race in August? Any advice Terry? Thanks.
Yes, pick another track. I kid, I kid. Some places in the Poconos are quite lovely.
Should I be worried about the 17? He had a very poor showing at NH.
No worries. Matt is having a strong year and they'll be in the hunt until the end.
What is all this talk of Edwards replacing Logano doing for his confidence? It cant be good for "sliced bread" to be hearing that he is gonna be the R&D/4th car at JGR next season.
If anything, it seems to be motivating him. Joey has finished 6th or better in three of the last four races.
What is your favorite track in NASCAR, Terry?
Richmond. Usually good racing and a nice city.
How come Loudon winner Newman praised Goodyear and Dale Jr whined about the tires?
Just the difference between winning and having a bad day.
I want to attend another track next year and have been trying to decide between Bristol (night race) or Charlotte (600). Both outstanding races, which would you suggest?
Noting quite like the Bristol night race.
Good to know you like RVA, Terry! Where do you go when you have time off before a race there?
I usually don't have any time off when I'm there because it's only a two-day show.
What are the odds of GameStop, Sport Clips, and Farm Bureau stepping up to sponsor a full season in Cup for Joey. Seems like a pretty decent fit to me.
You may be on to something there Jolt.
Lol. Will the racing there(Pocono) in person really be that dull? My first Nascar race was @ Dover and I really enjoyed it.
Restarts at Pocono have been pretty exciting the last couple of years. Seats coming out of Turn 3 or entering Turn 1 can be entertaining spots.
Gotta run folks. Check out NASCAR Now Thursday and I will talk about some of the issues we discussed today. Have a great week. Peace.
