Chat with Wally Matthews

Wallace Matthews
  (11:55 AM)

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the weekly Yankees live chat, the Tuesday Edition from beautiful downtown St. Pete. If you;re ready, I am, so let's do it

Jo Jo B. (Queens)

Is Omar Minaya the logical candidate to replace Cashman?

Wallace Matthews
  (11:57 AM)

help me out, bro. this is a joke, right?

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that the Yankees will trade for Rockies P Ubaldo Jimenez?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:00 PM)

Chris, it all depends on what the asking price is. It seems obvious to me that Montero's stock has fallen in the organization although whether they are ready to give up on him for a pitcher like Jiminez, who is not having a very good season, remains to be seen. and I think a lot has to do with how the starters perform this week and next. The Yankees need to be convinced that Bartolo and Freddy's deals with the devil have actually expired before they start mortgaging their future to replace them.

Rich (New Jersey)

Will the Yankees make any kind of deal before July 31 and what is there immediate priority pitching or hitting or fielding?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:02 PM)

their history tells us they will do SOMETHING. How big a something they do, I'm not sure. But to rank their needs in order of priority I would say starting pitching first, a situational reliever, preferably lefthanded, second, and a bench player who can fill the void left when Eric Chavez went down is third

Benny (Bronx)

I heard that Hank did cartwheels after hearing Boras reworked his client's contract to let him become a free agent, then collapsed after realizing it was K-Rod, not A-Rod. Your thoughts?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:02 PM)

if you can get me video of Hank Steinbrenner doing a cartwheel I guarantee you fame and fortune. Well, fame anyway

fred (ny)

Why don't the Yankees look into acquiring a good lefty starter, like francisco liriano, who they wouldn't have to give up that much for?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:04 PM)

Fred, it's a great idea but what makes you think they wouldn;t have to give up that much? Everyone in baseball knows the Yankees are looking for pitching, and everyone in baseball is going to hold them up for whatever they can get. It's kind of like what L Trost and Co. do to their fans at the concession stands. No free lunch at yankee stadium and none for the Yankees, either

Charlie (Hollywood,CA)

Wally dont you think its time to upgrade the grandpa rotation with a little taste of Ubaldo.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:05 PM)

I didn;t think so a month ago but it's starting to look that way now. let's see how Bartolo does tonight and freddy tomorrow. remember, trade deadline deals almost always get done at the last possible second so the yankees are going to take as much time as possible before pulling the trigger on anything.

Dominic (New York)

Is it too much to ask for King Felix?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:06 PM)

probably. Sorry, that's all I got for you, buddy

Eric (Boston)

Do you think Montero can beat Cervelli's .205/.263/.274 slash line and 10% caught stealing numbers if he played the same number of games? Perhaps better Cervelli's fielding percentage too? Or is Montero just not cut out to be a catcher?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:08 PM)

You would think so, but there was a somewhat revealing quote from Cashman today to Mike ashmore who covers the Trenton Thunder to the effect that Montero's catching has improved significantly this season but he has been a disappointment at the plate. We've also heard that Montero is "bored" in AAA and we know he has been benched at least twice for lack of hustle. It could be the Yankees are trying to preserve his trade value by not promoting him so that his flaws, whatever they are, would be on display for all to see. Of course, scouts can travel to Scranton, too, but it's a thought

Michael C. (Westport, CT)

Can you provide an update on Lonn Trost's condition? He was said to have fainted when he heard Christian Lopez didn't demand truckloads of money for Derek Jeter's 3,000-hit ball.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:09 PM)

I'm sure mr. Trost has recovered quite nicely from his initial shock and is now thinking of ways to spend the money he did not have to use to ransom the baseball

dominick (florida)

Despite how highly touted they are, they're still just prospects, so wouldn't a trade involving both of the killer B's and a few others for a proven ace like King Felix make sense?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:11 PM)

Don;t think so because of the tendency for pitchers to get injured. Giving up one or two potential top of the rotation starters like Banuelos and Betances plus "a few others" for one pitcher who might just break down -- and there are so many ways that young pitchers can break down, as we have seen in this half-season alone -- seems like a foolish gamble. Don;t think Cashman would do it unless ordered to by The Boys

Charlie S. (Hollywood,CA)

Wally do you think the yankees can get it done with this starting rotation. The Yankees got Re-Caps and they r about to blow.Dont you think its time for some New tires .

Wallace Matthews
  (12:14 PM)

I think what happens this week will determine your answer. Bartolo and Freddy looked miserable last week, and no doubt the Yankees are wondering if they've gotten all they're going to get out of them. but be honest, if they pitch the rest of the way as they did in the first three months of the season, what would your answer be? The Bartolo and Freddy we saw in april, may and june were certainly good enough to get it done. Now, they each have about two more starts to prove they still can.

Mike G (Greenwich, CT)

Whats the situation on Jimenez? Any other big acquisitions for the yankees?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:17 PM)

The situation as best i can tell from my conversations with the GM and others in the organization is that the Yankees are interested, but only up to a point. Clearly, there are names in the system Cashman does not want to part with for Jiminez -- Montero could be one, and so could two of the three iller Bs, the exception being Brackman -- but just as clearly, he can be overruled, as he was in the Soriano deal. As i;ve said several times today, I think the performances of Colon and Garcia and to an extent, hughes, between now and the deadline will go a long way toward determining what the yankees do. and don;t forget, Ivan Nova is still in the wings, waiting either to be recalled to replace one of the starters, or to be used as a chip in any trade. I think it's still a little too early to try to guess what they will do.

Bartolo Colon (Bronx,NY)

Wally tell everyone i am OK i just need a couple of more hot dogs and i will be fine.No need for Ubaldo if he comes to the Yankees i will eat him with mustard like a hot dog umumum!!!!

Wallace Matthews
  (12:17 PM)

you just said it better than I could, bro

Ian (Atl, GA)

I've heard that Cashman might be overruled regarding giving up more prospects than he would like for a Jiminez type pitcher! I would hate to see Montero, Banuelos, Betances, and/or Nova all go in the same deal!!! That is highway robbery, and I agree with Cashman on this one. Please tell me they will just let him do his job!!! Let's just let the prospects become Yankees for once. (Jeter, Mo, Pettite, Posada, Hughes, Robertson, etc. all worked out)

Wallace Matthews
  (12:20 PM)

Ian, I can;t imagine all of those guys would go at once. Hell, if the Yankees were willing to do that, Cliff Lee would be in pinstripes now. I think Cashman would like to hold onto as many of the guys you named for as long as possible but he may be getting pressure from above to package several of them for what will probably be basically a second-tier pitcher. Don;t think King Felix is going to be available, so what's the point of emptying the farm system for a number 3 or 4 guy? The yankees already have too many of them to begin with

Mike (Chicago)

Carlos Zambrano, Aramis Ramirez and Al Soriano all could be had. Any interest from the Yankees on any player?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:21 PM)

They have said no, repeatedly, on all three of those names.

Mike (Absecon, New Jersey)

Would the Yankees trade Nova for something?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:22 PM)

I think it is a distinct possibility. It's also just as likely they hold onto him as insurance for thei rotation in the (possibly likely) event either Bartolo or freddy, or even Hughes, can';t cut it.

JKM (Lawrence, NY)

What is the story with Banuelos' struggles this year? Still project as a future front-line starter? Also, given the fact that Banuelos and Betances both figure into the Yankees' long term plans at the moment, would it make any sense to have Montero sent down to AA to catch them, see if some kind of repore develops?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:24 PM)

The word on banuelos is control issues. way too many walks. Cashman says he is still high on him as a top of the rotation guy -- he only turned 20 in March -- but several times this season absolutely ruled him out for a callup due to "performance issues." As for dropping Montero to AA, your suggestion makes sense but the word is he is already impatient and chafing at having to play in AAA. Can't imagine he'd take kindly to a class drop.

Billy (NYC)

Any updates on how A-Rod is doing after the surgery?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:26 PM)

supposedly OK, will remain in Miami for two weeks to rehab there and then go to Tampa. too early for a projected return date but original prognosis was 4-6 weeks, which means probably late August

Dick (Blueballs,Pa)

Wally would you please tell Brian Cashman the Yankee Fans have spoken and we need starting pitchers and a veteran infielder.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:26 PM)

OK. But I think he already knows that

Eric (SI, NY)

First, nice to see you....second, Colon/Garcia are they regressing back to the norm, were the starts hiccups, or did Yankees get all they can get from them?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:27 PM)

Hey, eric. we shall see, starting tonight. By next week, we should have the answer

John (Dallas)

I'm going to my first yankees game next week. Any part of the ballpark I should go out of my way to see (besides monuement park)?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:28 PM)

The Great Hall is impressive, and I'm told the museum is cool but I;ve never been there. I'm sure you already know this, but bring money. Plenty of it

ruben (toronto)

will the yankees try to deal away burnett and inporve the pitching staff some more ?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:29 PM)

Can;t imagine anyone would take on AJ and his incredible contract -- three more years, $49.5 M. For what?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:29 PM)

Thanks guys. See you all again next week
