Sorry I'm late. It's a crazy time of year. I can only chat till 1:30, so we'd better get started!
Good afternoon Jayson. Who do you see the Marlins trading (Infante, Nolasco, etc) or trading for before the deadline? thks
I don't get the sense the Marlins are trading anybody. They're all about trying to build momentum heading into their new ballpark. And they don't seem to feel guys like Nolasco or Nunez are replaceable. So they're hanging onto them unless something changes.
What's the liklihood of the Red Sox getting Bedard?
Sounds as if that could happen. With all the uncertainty over Buchholz, the Red Sox feel like they need somebody who can bridge the gap for a few weeks. It's hard to count on a guy with Bedard's health history to make it all the way to the end of October in one piece. But if they think they just need to deal for a pitcher who can keep them afloat until Labor Day, he might do that. I think, in the end, the pitcher they trade for will also tell us a lot about their faith that Buchholz can come back and be a force down the stretch and in October.
What do you think of the Beltran trade for the Mets. I think they have done a great job of repositioning themselves for the coming years. If Lucas Duda has a great day ... the papers can write ... All The Duda Day! lol
It was worth it just to set up that line, right? I think they did an excellent job of taking a guy who was purely a rental, carried no draft-pick compensation and controlled where he went, and turning him into a pitcher with an extremely high ceiling. Most people didn't think they could get a player that good for a rent-a-bat. So I give them a solid A for that deal.
Jayson are the braves going to get Hunter Pence? Thanks
I'm hearing today that the Braves have moved on. Thought the price was too high. More coming up on Pence on our site shortly.
is there any chance that the Twins would move Thome?
I was told they want to keep him until he hits his 600th homer. At that point, depending on when it is and how close to contention they are, they could move him to a team with a better shot to win. But at this rate, that might not be until September, so it could be a moot point.
Jayson,The Pirates will probably only make a minor move or two? Have to hold onto the young pitching prospects.
Depends how you define "minor." If they trade for someone like Derrek Lee, that might feel minor to the rest of the world, but not to them, because it would mean adding a guy with a name and a presence to a young team that could benefit from the addition of someone who fits that mold. The Pirates won't be trading for Pence or Upton, or giving up their best young arms. But I'd be disappointed if they didn't do something.
The White Sox are 3 games out with a big 3 game series against the Red Sox, the most likely opponent for whomever wins the AL Central. Are the White Sox buyers or sellers or does it depend on if they win tonight and tomorrow?
They've dangled guys like Carlos Quentin and Matt Thornton, but most teams are very skeptical they're really going to "sell" right now. They're two games out in the loss column, and they have the best run differential in the division. These talks could be a preclude to a bunch of deals over the winter, not over the weekend.
Is the price for Hunter Pence legit, or an example of being the best player available at the right time?
I think he's overpriced. But you have to remember a couple of things. One is that he's the Astros' best and most popular player. The second is that it's rare at the trading deadline to find an all-star type player available who is under control for two-plus years. So that's driving the price beyond where it rationally should be.
Sorry for the delay. Had a call. Today's Daily Rumble column is now posted. Biggest tidbit I heard today had the Phillies and Astros working to find a third team to make the Pence deal work. The third team would be getting Domonic Brown, at least theoretically.
Hey Jayson, love your work. Whats the latest your hearing on Heath bell. Who has the edge: rangers or cards. Thanks!
Wrote about this in that Daily Rumble column. Texas remains the most logical destination. Doesn't sound as if the Rangers think there's much competition on Bell so they haven't been willing to pay the price. Still suspect it happens.
You said the Mets get an A for their side of the trade. How would you rate the trade from the Giants side? I really think this is one of those old fashion baseball trades where it is a good deal for both sides.
I agree. Very, very few teams would give up a pitcher like Zack Wheeler to make a trade like this. But Brian Sabean recognized he's in a unique place right now, with a team that has won, is built to win again right now and, because pitching is so fragile, needed to maximize its chances for THIS year. Great decision, even if it could haunt them (potentially like the John Smoltz trade haunted Detroit) for years to come.
If Pence ends up in ATL, would Phils offer a similar package for Quentin that they are offering for Pence? Do you think KW will deal Quentin before Sunday?
I don't think Pence will wind up in Atlanta, unless something changes. Also heard the Phillies-White Sox talks for Quentin had "cooled."
What do the Phils lack to get Pence in a 2 team trade?
The hangup, from what I've heard, is that the Astros would rather have more young quantity AND quality than to take Domonic Brown as the third player. They'd like to spin Brown into more pieces, again according to one source who spoke with them.
what can the Orioles do to make themselves less terrible?
They're a long ways from being good, if the regression of their young pitchers this year is an indication of where they're headed. So any deal they make this weekend - for Guthrie, Lee or Uehara - that brings back real prospects would be significant.
Why are the Braves so unwilling to trade Mike Minor? He is their 3rd or 4th best pitching prospect according to most people, and the Braves already have two outstanding young pitchers already on the team.
I'm 99 percent certain he was in their offer for Pence. They wouldn't trade him for a rental like Beltran, but this is a guy who would fit into their team for two more years. Nevertheless, the Astros apparently shot them down pretty quickly, or they wouldn't have moved on so fast today.
Any chance the Royals move one of their pitchers, Frenchy, or Melky?
Highly unlikely. That's my read. They don't think they'll be offered anything good enough to make it worth their while. But they're still listening, so you never know.
Matt Kemp to the Braves for 2 of the Braves premium pitching prospects + Schafer throw in. Who hangs up first?
Dodgers. No interest in trading Kemp. None. Might listen on Andre Ethier if they got presented with a huge package. Kemp is a whole different deal.
Any idea what the return for Bedard would be?
Phils have cooled on Quentin. Would ATL or maybe Boston pursue if Pence ends up with Phils?
A lot of tire-kicking on Quentin, from what I hear. Don't sense any momentum toward a deal with the Braves or Red Sox.
Jayson: Grandal-Alonso-Wood-Volquez for Ubaldo. Sound good?
I don't know that the Rockies would do that exact deal, because Volquez doesn't fit. But you're on the right track. The only problem is, sounds like the Reds are backing off on buying after their brutal week.
More likely to happen Pence to the Phillies or Mike Adams and Ludwick to the Phillies?
Pence is clearly their first choice. That doesn't mean it's more "likely." But it does mean it's more of a priority.
Do you think Sabean is done? Or does he find a shortstop/catcher somewhere?
He's working on both, but the supply at those positions -- unless the Reds trade Ramon Hernandez -- is pretty meager.
I hate to do this, but I only have time for one more. About to pop onto the Scott Van Pelt Show.
OK, we'll replace Volquez with Bailey if we can keep the 2014 team option on Ubaldo. Where do I sign?
We have a deal! I'll get Walt Jocketty and Dan O'Dowd on the phone, and we'll hold a press conference shortly.
Thanks to everybody who checked in. Have a fun deadline weekend. See you down the road in Chat Land!
