Chat with Terry Blount

Terry Blount
  (1:59 PM)

What's going on in the chat nation today?

Aj (IN)

Another thing. The tire debacle ? I thought it was by far one of the best race's at Indy in some time. Restart, after restart, after restart. Side by side action and about the time they got strung out, caution.

Terry Blount
  (2:01 PM)

One of the best races at Indy? Clearly, we weren't watching the same race. It was a disaster.

Josh (Tenn)

Roush is the only team ever successful running 4 cars, Hendrick failed and RCR has failed in 2 trys. Is it time to rethink that whole 4 team strategy?

Terry Blount
  (2:02 PM)

It just depends on having enough quality people to make it work, and the proper funding. Even so, it's hard to have all four cars running well at the same time. One reason is drivers have different preferences on set-ups. So what works for one guy may not work for another.

greg (louisiana)

any news on carl edwards and anyidea wat wld happen to joey

Terry Blount
  (2:03 PM)

It's still up in the air, but my guess is he's going to Gibbs. I think JGR wants to run Joey in a fourth car if they can get the proper funding.

Vinnie (ATL)

Great article today on the Brickyard 400 issues. My problem with NASCAR at Indy is simple... The racing stinks. Stock cars at the 2.5 mile flat oval don't equate to good racing results.

Terry Blount
  (2:05 PM)

Thanks Vinnie. And it's true the racing isn't the best. That's not easily changed, but I think they can do things to enhance the event. One person on Twitter today suggested moving it to the first race of the Chase. I like that idea.

greg (louisiana)

whoas ur top 5 this week and dark horses

Terry Blount
  (2:07 PM)

Top 5 are JJ, Gordon, Harvick, Tony and JPM. Darkhorses would be Ambrose and Kahne.

Bernadette (Cleveland, OH)

Do you think after the season, the powers that be may rethink (further) the Cup Drivers in NNS, CWTS situation. I'm not real sure that declaring one's intention to drive for a specific title really made a difference. (And it would be interesting to see how dominant Edwards or Busch would be if they just concentrated on one series...)

Terry Blount
  (2:09 PM)

I don't think it's going to change Bernadette. We'll see more Cup drivers racing in the NW race at Indy next year since it's moving to IMS. I would like them to limit Cup guys to 15 or 20 NW and CWTS races, but it's not happening. However, Carl says he's ot running the full NW sked next year.

Jim (PA)

answer to Bernadette, the Nashville fans didn't seem to mind seeing Edwards winning their race.

Terry Blount
  (2:10 PM)

I did, but as I put on Twitter, I also didn't like it when the Grinch stole Christmas.

jesse (iowa)

Indy isnt a great track for raceing but almost has to be on the schedule because of its historical background. i think moving it to the chase would help but what about moving it a week after the indy 500?

Terry Blount
  (2:11 PM)

They wouldn't do that Jesse because it would hurt ticket sales to each event. People would pick one or the other. You want to spread them apart as much as possible, which is another good reason to move the Cup race to Sept.

scott (N.Y )

who go in the 99 2012

Terry Blount
  (2:12 PM)

Hard to say if it isn't Carl. Bowyer might want that spot, but Roush has a history of moving up developmental drivers. So my guess would be Bayne. He's someone they can sell to sponsors as the Daytona 500 winner.

Matt (NY)

Hey Terry! How many more races do you think Matt Kenseth wins this year and where do you think they would be?

Terry Blount
  (2:13 PM)

He could win one of two. Matt's very good at Texas.

Shane (Red Bluff, CA)

Will Kasey Kahne be able to continue racing with the World of Outlaws under contract with Hendrick? It seems Gordon, Johnson, and Junior are extremely limited in their ability to race in series' other than Cup.

Terry Blount
  (2:14 PM)

I don't know the stipulations of his contract, but I doubt they would tell him not to run them, although he might wants to think twice about that after last week.

Nathan (Longview, TX)

Rowdy has same # of cup wins as T. Labonte and Burton and more than Carl, Harvick, Biff, Kenseth, Newman, Jr. Denny, B. Labonte. Why doesn't Kyle Busch get the respect he deserves?

Terry Blount
  (2:15 PM)

I think he gets plenty of respect. I believe he's the most talented driver in the sport. But I don't put much stock in all his minor league wins.

Keith H (Seattle)

Terry, I hope last weekend at Chez Blount on the Sound was a good one. Could we get an "amen" for the rockingest invocation at last week's Nationwide race?

Terry Blount
  (2:16 PM)

It was funny, but I don't know it's it's a good thing overall. I think it perpetuates an image that NASCAR doesn't want.

Julie (NJ)

Is ESPN planning more all reporter segments like yesterday on NASCAR Now? It was way more indepth and lively than the normal.

Terry Blount
  (2:18 PM)

I agree completely Julie. I think we have more honest opinion on the all-reporter shows. However, I think Ricky Craven is the best commentator we have.

Shane (Red Bluff, CA)

Is the 24 a solid championship contender after the surge through the summer thus far, or is Gordon still a relative dark horse in comparison with the 18, 48, 99, 29, and perhaps even the 22?

Terry Blount
  (2:20 PM)

Jeff's certainly a contender. He wouldn't make my top 3 picks to win the title (Carl, JJ, Kyle) but he has a legitimate shot at winning that fifth championship.

bill pa [via mobile]

any word on jr extensoin? And you think he will win one soon?

Terry Blount
  (2:20 PM)

The new deal is coming. As for that win, I'm starting to lose faith.

Michael (Las Vegas)

Do you know who Driver X is?

Terry Blount
  (2:21 PM)

I do not. It takes high-level security clearance at the WWL to know that info.

William (CA)

Do you expect NASCAR at Indy to go the way of F1 at Indy?

Terry Blount
  (2:22 PM)

No. NASCAR isn't leaving the Brickyard. The race may not be what it once was, but they will make changes to ensure it stays.

Adam (NY)

Not to be mean, but other than selling stuff why would Hendrick really want to have Jr. on the team?

Terry Blount
  (2:24 PM)

Simple. It makes tons of money for your organization. This is a business. It's about making money. Having said that, I think Rick truly believes Junior can contend and run well.

Boss Hogg (Hazard County)

I would God to Bless my smokin hot wife Lulu Hogg along with her dumb brother, my Sheriff, Roscoe P Coltrane and Deputy Enos for the revenue they bring to Hazard with my celebrity speed trap. Now, would Pastor Joe Nelms bless the new crew chief of Jeff Burton and do you think the #31 gets maybe 1 Top 10 before the season ends?

Terry Blount
  (2:26 PM)

Maybe you'll get to give the next invocation BH. And yes, Burton will get a top 10 or two in the second half of the season.

Ron (OH)

So what percentages do you put on the cause for the drop in Indy attendance? Tiregate? Economy? Bad racing?

Terry Blount
  (2:26 PM)

Tiregate _ 50 percent. Economy _ 30 percent.Bad racing _ 20 percent.

red. tulare ca [via mobile]

U think earnhardt sr would be happy with what nascar is 2day

Terry Blount
  (2:28 PM)

I'm sure he would have a few complaints, as he usually did. But overall, I don't think he would have a problem with it, except for making sure Dale Jr. ran better.

Len (Atlanta)

Isn't the biggest problem with Indy the fact that NASCAR fans expect to see the cars all the time on the ovals?

Terry Blount
  (2:30 PM)

It's one issue, but I don't think it's a big one because the vast majority of people who come to the Brickyard accept that as part of the experience at such a historic place. And there are some positive about the layout, like seats on the frontstretch that are much closer to the track than most modern speedways.

Confused (GA)

Hi Terry, love your stuff. What do you make of Grand-Am's addition to the weekend? Why can't we get ALMS on the weekend to really improve the IMS racing?

Terry Blount
  (2:31 PM)

Politics. Grand_Am is owned by NASCAR. ALMS is a competing league.

Vinnie (ATL)

Do you think the F1 track in Austin will happen? Should I buy tix?

Terry Blount
  (2:33 PM)

I didn't when it was first announced, but I do know, especially since the Austin city council approved the $25 million sanctioning fee. The track is being built. I'm happy to say this looks like the real deal. But man oh man it's going to be hot out there in June.

Craig (Pittsburgh)

Where is bowyer going to end up next year?

Terry Blount
  (2:34 PM)

My guess today is he stays at RCR. But it all depends on sponsorship dollars. Right now, he doesn't have any optins that are better than where he is.

Ben (MD)

New to NASCAR so I was wondering if Dale Sr. got booed and had to put up with all the negative stuff we see like Kyle Busch gets today?

Terry Blount
  (2:35 PM)

The Intimidator got booed many a day and many tracks. He stirred the pot. Many fans adored him, but some also hated him.

Boss Hogg (Hazard County)

Do you think NASCAR would have minded had the NFL lockout lasted for a few more months?

Terry Blount
  (2:35 PM)

Probably not, but that never was a realistic option.

The Metalman (Baltimore)

Do you think it would be possible to maybe allow a rule for the trucks and Nationwide that says once you make, say 7 or more starts in a series that is the series you have to stick with?

Terry Blount
  (2:37 PM)

No, but that gives me an idea. How about you can't race that series after you win five times in a season if you are racing for the title in another series.

Lance (Iowa)

Does the 14 have time to turn their team into a legitimate title contender in 2011, or are they too far behind to catch up and pass teams like the 18, 99, 48, 29, etc.?

Terry Blount
  (2:38 PM)

Tony isn't too far behind. Remember, the Chase is seeded on wins. He can still get it done, but he needs a couple of victories, which isn't out of the question. Indy and The Glen are two of his best tracks.

Henry (KY)

Do you think Jr can hang on and stay in the chase and even if he does will be be a factor for the championship?

Terry Blount
  (2:41 PM)

I'm on the fence on this one. It he makes the Chase, then he's probably turned things around and could race well in the playoff. But I'm not sure he can turn it around. The 88 is fading fast.

Craig (Pittsburgh)

Where is FatBack McSwain these days?

Terry Blount
  (2:41 PM)

I don't know, but I bet he's eating well.

Tom (Aurora, IL)

Terry, why did they switch out Marty Reid for Allen Bestwick in the broadcast booth? I know of Allen's background and how well Marty has done as a replacement for Dr. Jerry Punch, but am confused.

Terry Blount
  (2:43 PM)

AB will do the Cup races and Marty will continue to do the Nationwide races and IndyCar races. They are two of the best in the business.

scott mccormick (denton.tx)

where do you thing that carl edwards will in up next year or do you thing that he will stay with roush fenway racing for next year

Terry Blount
  (2:44 PM)

No, I think Carl is going to Gibbs. But it's possible Ford will try to help Roush keep him. Either way, I think we'll know within a couple of weeks.

bill pa [via mobile]

if you owned a team who would your three drivers be? And what brand cars would you run?

Terry Blount
  (2:45 PM)

Chevy with JJ, Carl and Kyle.

Mike Ford (JGR)

I have a feeling JGR is going to win the title this year. And I actually think it may be Denny that does it. Am I crazy?

Terry Blount
  (2:46 PM)

Well, if I were the real Mike Ford, I definitely would think that. It isn't crazy, but I don't think it's likely.

scott mccormick (denton.tx)

do you thing that carl will make and a announcement on tv or do you thing he will do it on twitter

Terry Blount
  (2:47 PM)

No way in you-know-where he's announcing that on Twitter.

Jordan N. (South Dakota)

Mr. Blount, do you think Elliot Sadler can win the Nationwide Title without winning a race this year? And do you see him winning at all this year?

Terry Blount
  (2:49 PM)

He definitely could win it without winning a race, but I think he will won one before the season ends.

Eric (Virginia)

Carl should do "The Decision" sponsored by Subway, on NASCAR Now.

Terry Blount
  (2:50 PM)

Not happening. I think our "decision" days are over.

roush fan [via mobile]

if carl leaves roush do you think fans will loose respect for him since jack gave him his start an he has done very well there i know i will not respect him the same

Terry Blount
  (2:52 PM)

No I don't. Drivers have to do what best for them and their family. If you just based it on loyalty, no driver would ever leave the first person who brought him to Cup. Carl has the utmost respect for Jack, but business is business. It's like saying a team owner should stick with a driver who isn't producing any longer, just because he helped you in the past.

bill oh [via mobile]

besides jj carl and kyle. Whos your darkhorse to win the championship?

Terry Blount
  (2:53 PM)

Kurt Busch

Penny (Ft. Myers)

Do you think Dale's bad luck started when he quit DEI-the team his father started for his children-to join Hendrick?

Terry Blount
  (2:54 PM)

No. Things weren't going well at DEI and Junior had a bad relatonship with his step-mom. Had Dale Sr. lived, things would have been much different. DEI would still be around and Junior would still be there, probably running well.

The Metalman (Baltimore)

Do you think the Bristol night race will be a sellout this year? I think this is probably NASCAR's last chance for a sellout this year.

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

Bristol will have a huge crowd, but probably not a sellout.

Jamerson (Georgia)

If/when Carl announces he's leaving Roush for Gibbs, will Jack Roush send him packing before the season is over, as he did to Jeff Burton and Kurt Busch?

Terry Blount
  (2:57 PM)

Not a chance of that happening. Carl has a chance to win the championship. Everyone has to put persional feelings aside and try to do what best for the organizations and the 99 sponsors. However, lame-duck teams rather perform at their best because guys are worried about their jobs and are looking elsewhere.

CORNELIUS (KS)

ANY CHANCE BURTON GETS REPLACED NEXT YEAR OR TWO?

Terry Blount
  (2:57 PM)

No. He signed a new deal this year.

Frank (WI)

Do you think Mark Martin feels disrespected at HMS and is he putting on a good face for the sponsors when he's really not happy?

Terry Blount
  (2:58 PM)

A little bit. but Mark is a pro's pro. Once he gets in the car he gives it all he has.

Ron (OH)

You really think that DEI would have better cars than Hendrick if SR was stil around?

Terry Blount
  (2:59 PM)

I didn't say they would be better than Hendrick, but I think they would have been a strong team.

Mike (ILL)

Terry, Do you think Travis Pastrana is serious about Nationwide or is it just for fun to him?

Terry Blount
  (3:00 PM)

I think he's serious and would like to make it work, but it's much easier said than done.

Terry Blount
  (3:00 PM)

Gotta run folks. Great chat today. Really enjoyed it. Have a great day and enjoy the Brickyard 400. Peace.
