Hello there and welcome to the latest fantasy sports chat session. I am Eric, glad to be here, thanks for showing up. Many of you probably have football on your mind today, as I've been hearing about some agreement between the owners and players - I dunno, has it been in the news? - and of course we've got baseball ending its fourth month. So here we go, let's have some fun! Any questions?
Will you think Bell will be a closer after the trade deadline, or should I sell him knowing he won't have much value in a set-up role.
Impossible to know. I am leaning toward him still being a closer, which is why I wouldn't sell him on the cheap. Of course, a week from now he could be setting up Mariano. It's a risk. If you want to move him because you have enough saves and have other needs, do that.
Pick a side: Teixeria, A Gordon, and J Zimmerman for AGon and Danks?
Adrian is awesome, but can I definitively say he will be so much better than Teixeira the final two months? No. Then again, Jordan Zimmerman might have about 7 starts left. I'd probably take the Teix side.
James Mcdonald someone to take a look at in a 10 team mixed?
Not really. Still too many walks, though there were none on Monday. Too early to tell if that was a harbinger or not. I like the Ks and the upside but he has earned this 1.54 WHIP. There's SO much pitching in a 10-team league...
ROS: Willie Bloomquist or Desmond Jennings? 10 team H2H, NO keeper, points league. Thanks!
Please tell me you're kidding. Jennings is gonna be a monster. Willie can steal a base, but that's about it.
EK, tell the football meatheads to hold their questions until August. I'm holding Melancon and Izzy, but casting covetous glances at FA Mike Adams. What would you do between those three?
Well, football is kind of popular, ya know. I'd take Adams over Melancon. The Astros so rarely win and give him save opps. Adams is likely not being dealt, and should be a closer by Sunday night. If that happens you take him over just about all but 7 or 8 closers in the game.
A more serious question, Jennings or Hosmer ROS?
Probably Hosmer there. More mature bat, obviously has some power, but Jennings will make a bigger impact with the steals. Tough call.
I can't believe you took the Bloomquist/Jennings question.
At least I answered it correctly. Hey, I can't write the questions too!
At what point do we cut bait with Avila? Was huge in the first half but has been awful for the last couple of weeks. I know catcher is thin but you think there's anybody out there on waivers who may outperform him?
Depends who is available. If Weiters is, sure. Or Yadier. But as good as Avila was for 3 months, let's no assume he can't do that again.
Odds Mike Trout stays in the majors this year? I'm contending and would like to hold him as a cheap keeper in my auction league.
I still think he's headed to the minors any day now. He's 19! And Bourjos is playing.
Do you see the usual regression from Dan Haren this year? Sell high now or do you trust him?
We didn't see it last year, did we? Enjoy. It's all legit.
EK - Please excuse me for double-dipping, but 1) what is the likelihood that Farnsworth gets traded; and 2) in a 12 team league, is Beachy a keeper if doing so would mean getting him as a 20th rounder next year?
I think the Rays realize they are out of it, and Farnsworth does get dealt and Peralta is the AL version of Mike Adams. Get him now. And yes on Beachy. Legit guy in a perfect place.
Do you see Reddick holding down RF in Bostos for the remainder of the season? What does his final line look like?
Yes. And I could see him hitting .280-.300 the rest of the way, but be prepared for the batting average to normalize. Could hit 10 home runs, too.
So, I've heard your take on Vick--what do you think of Berry's idea that because Vick is so good when he's healthy, he's worth drafting because if he doesn't get hurt, you'll have a really strong chance to win? Do you not believe he's as good as he was when healthy last year, or is it just that he's a virtual lock to be injured and therefore he won't give you enough wins to be worth the 1st round pick?
I respect the opinion but I build teams differently. That's the joy of having so many opinions - and good ones - on the staff. I think we see some statistical regression from Vick - like we did the final 6 weeks - and I am concerned about injury as well. But I did rank him 6th among QBs, so it's not like he stinks, either. He's not a lock to be good or bad or get hurt. It's all a risk. Peyton Manning... not a risk.
Should Dez Bryant owners rejoice after hearing Roy Williams will be cut?
Meaningless. For one, the Cowboys could easily add help. It's the same with Felix Jones and Marian Barber. But Dez is pretty safe regardless. I doubt Williams was going to hurt his production if Dez stays healthy. He's a potential star.
Steve Smith South is a top __ WR this year
Didn't make my top 30 WRs, but I also don't expect to see the Panthers give him much at QB.
How do these questions get selected?
I see a few, I click one of them.
Peyton Manning coming off neck surgery, with Irsay saying he was hopeful that he's ready for the season opener is not risky???
Couldn't be less concerned. I'm serious.
Does Jahvid Best worth gambling on?
I'd be surprised if he is the top Lions option and they give him enough carries to be a top 20 fantasy RB. And he has to stay healthy.
Konerko or Wright ROS? Position eligibility not a factor.
David Wright, definitely. It's stunning how many people simply gave up on the guy. Fantasy owners are way too reactive.
Is Adam Jones having the quietest breakout season in recent memory?
I seldom see him discussed, so you might be correct.
Would you take Tebow or Roethlisberger this year?
Big Ben, easily. I like Tebow but let's stay under control here.
What's the story with Cameron Maybin? How long until we see him running again?
Wouldn't surprise me if he needs a DL stint. Padres going nowhere, lots of outfield depth, I'd be prepared to add Will Venable... keep Maybin in case he plays tonight.
We did see a lack of preparation can hurt Peyton though. No concern at all? I understand he will be good but idk about the usual amazing production and Reggie Wayne isn't any younger, Dallas Clark coming off injury.
He's coming off a career high in passing yards. Second most TD passes. Reggie Wayne is not a problem. But hey, your teams, your decisions. I know most people love Vick in round 1. I'm not most people.
I dropped Rasmus for Jennings and now kind of regret it. Should I?
No, I have no issue with that. Jennings is going to run a lot. Rasmus is not running... or even playing that much.
More likely to be traded, Farnsworth, Nunez, or neither?
Both will be, but Nunez more likely. Bad teams should not keep average closers around if they can get something decent. And these teams are not playoff bound. Mujica and Peralta await their opportunity to get the overrated saves!
Does Ubaldo's value go up in h2h if he's traded? Thx!
In theory depends on where, but he's not getting dealt. Makes no sense for the Rox.
What are your thoughts on Domonic Brown? Is he worth holding onto in a standard keeper league?I don't pay much attention to the games as I'm too busy shaking my rump to get the crown riled up. You watch a lot of these games, so what do you think? Is he getting good at-bats?
Well, PP, I think he will be very good, but not until next year. For now he's not really a top 50 outfielder, which means you can do better the final two months.
just wanted to say thanks for answering my question - I feel like you don't get thanked enough for your services.
You're very kind. I appreciate it... and I know even if people don't say it...well, you know.
Time to drop Werth? If so, who would be a good pickup?
For Jennings, yes. In general depends what is out there. His skills are there, he's proven he can be a 25/25 guy, so cutting him is dangerous.
If Miami gets a veteran QB, does Marshall jump back up to Top 10 WR status?
If they get Orton, I'd certainly be inclined to think that way... but it's also up to Marshall and the team because this is an extreme running outfit.
You can see one player in his prime. Who would it be
Greatest player of all time is Babe Ruth. Easily. Consider the numbers in context of everyone else... wasn't close.
I don't like Vick in round 1 either Eric.
Round 3 seems about right, but I know he won't last!
EK - that was the softest 4,700 yard, 33 TD campaign you'll ever see. Where is the explosiveness? He dinked and dunked up the field all season. In a league that rewards for longer TDs, and penalizes for picks, you still think Peyton is risk free, given the state of his targets?
You're joking, right? We can agree to disagree, but I don't see how a 4,700 yard season can be soft. And I am not concerned moving forward. But there are a lot of QBs out there, so just take Rivers or Romo.
I am still waiting for Ogando's arm to fall off. Why do I think his impending demise was greatly exaggerated?
Probably somewhat, but it's still July, too. We were more concerned for late-August.
Eric...pretend you have Zobrist...which one of these deals is more attractive to you, assuming you have 2B and OF help already: Andrus/Napoli or Greinke?
Both look great, but if you need pitching there are few better buy low options than Greinke. By every meaningful stat we analyze, Greinke has to get so much better the rest of the way.
FOOTBALL IS BACK!!! How do you feel about Ray Rice in a .5 PPR? Worth the 8th pick?
Probably worth the fourth or fifth pick there.
Markakis Rios Pagan..who you dropping?
Rios. It's nearly four months now. I think we've all seen enough, no?
MYoung just secured 3B eligibility in my league for 2012. Is there really any reason to believe he won't be a top 7 option at that position in a points league next season? The guy loves to be doubted.
Always underrated. I'm glad I chose him in multiple leagues this year, regardless of eligibility. Always produces!
I'm reading the Mets don't want to trade Izzy, time to give up on Parnell in a 10 team mixed league?
I'm seeing this as well. But then again when K-Rod was dealt, I seemed to be the only one touting Izzy. So I never added Parnell.
Got a trade offer 30 seconds ago: Asdrubal Cabrera + Venters for Brian Wilson. On its face, accept it?
The way Cabrera is playing, he's worth more than every closer in baseball for fantasy, and it's not even close. And the only thing Venters doesn't do is get saves. Make the deal.
Is Parnell the closer heading into 2012? NY has too many holes to fill and they made the mistake of overpaying for a closer once...
They didn't really overpay K-Rod. He was very good for them. Perhaps you don't like him, but statistically, he did nothing wrong. I think Parnell gets a shot, but this is NY. They could easily find a free agent.
When Putz comes back, do I just drop Hernandez or try to hang tight and make sure they give him the saves and he does well with them?
Putz returns today, right? I'd try to wait a bit and make sure Putz doesn't hurt himself again.
Babe Ruth is not GOAT.. he got to play before African Americans were allowed to.
OK. Then you can have Bonds.
Your Podcast partner was committing podultury and appeared on the BS Report... He seemed to think the Yankees should sell the farm (Banuelos, Betances, Montero) for Ubaldo, and he's a smart guy... In that case, then it makes sense for the Rox, no?
I have no problem with KLaw or Simon or anyone else appearing on other shows. I hosted Fantasy Focus last week! I've been on Simmons' show. It's all ESPN. Yankees should go for it, rather than assuming Garcia,Colon and others are safe. Also, what if Montero isn't that good? Always deal the prospects to win now. Always.
What can I expect from Daniel Murphy for the rest of the year? Will he continue to be hot?
He should be hitting .300 all the time, so yes. And love the 2B eligibility.
Do you think a change of scenery and having more than one fan like i had in st. petersburg improve me and my fantasy value significantly? should non-owners target me?
I don't think B.J. Upton is gonna win a batting title playing home games in St. Louis or New York or anywhere. He is what he is unless he changes his approach. And he's still pretty good.
% chance Strasburg returns this year?
Probably pretty good for 5 or so starts, like 75 percent.
Now that Marion Barber has been cut by the 'Boys do you think Choice will step up and be a sleeper for this year? If he doesn't then out of him, Murray or Jones who will be their most reliable RB?
I am not going to recommend Felix Jones as a stud. I'm sure someone will take enough touches to hurt his value.
Is Gates worth a 2nd/3rd round pick to you? Or are you paying for last year's numbers?
Seems a bit generous to me. I know he's the top TE, but he does get hurt and ... too many other top RBs and WRs in the first 3 rounds to go tight end.
Johan Santana...worth the pick up? I have the DL spot to spare right now. And how does he look going forward for the ROS?
Could be back in a week, and should be good enough to own. Not Strasburg strikeouts, but enough.
Here's another one... In a keeper league, Jennings or Heyward?
Heyward, though I see a lot of people are down on him. They shouldn't be.
What is the range for brandon lloyd this year?
I think people are way too down on him and Tebow, personally. Can't say Lloyd makes my WR top 10, but he is being totally forgotten. And this is another reason why Orton should be watched when he is dealt to Miami or somewhere.
EK, where did Adrian Gonzalez power went? is it safe to trade for him on a Roto league?
Lost it all in the HR Derby. Oh well. (He's gonna be fine)
Aramis Ramirez is having an incredible year. Do you think he'll keep it up for the rest of the season?
He's having an incredible few weeks. Before that he wasn't hitting for power at all. But I see no reason he can't keep hitting.
Most shocking stat of the year has to be Granderson leading the majors in HRs off of lefty pitchers right?
Not necesssarily. We generally see lefty hitters leading the league there, because they face so many lefties.
From one Eric to another! Do I try to move Longoria based on speculation he may get shut down it the Rays are out of it and his nagging injuries persist?
I haven't heard that rumor, and it would surprise me if the Rays do this. Move him because he hasn't played like a top 10 3B if you get the proper offer.
Bedard gets traded? Yay or nay?
Tough to trade injured folks. I'd say he stays in Seattle, pitches 12 more times and wins like twice. Sorry, M's fans.
Did M. Simon like Cincinnati? Do you know where he ate/visited?
Tune in Friday! I have no idea what he's doing...
Brennan Boesch: one half wonder or just in a slump?
Just not that good. Only hit when he was batting third ahead of Miguel Cabrera. And now Magglio does that.
Adam Dunn or ham sandwich...who wins?
It's a shame, really. Nobody wants to be that awful. He's trying to get better... just kinda sad. I hope he gets the power back. Seems like a nice enough fella.
Drop Avila for Soto?
Oh yeah, I would do that now.
I'm a big Braves fan and even I'm way down on Heyward. He grounds out waaaaay too much, and doesn't seem to be making any adjustments.
His shoulder is hurt. I'm convinced of it. Even Chipper knows he's playing hurt. For this season I don't invest. For 2012 and the decade beyond, I do.
Chances Aroldis is closing August 1st?
There's nothing intrinsically wrong with Francisco Cordero.
Better future: Duffy, Carrasco, or mid-season waiver acquisition in 2012?
Duffy. Carrasco kind of is what he is, and I doubt he gets much better.
I know we're real far away, but guys like Dunn and Werth seem like such great targets in 2012 auctions and drafts....
I concur. Sometimes a player just can't fix a bad season. It's happened before. And I do NOT buy that a guy so good in 2010 can simply be done that quickly.
I know you have possessed my roommate. All he does is tell me Ogando sucks and will falter in August. Please make him stop. LEAVE MY FRIEND ALONE!!!!
I will leave him alone. I promise.
Spill the dirt EK, who is your second team, we all know you have one
You're right. Phillies first, ... Eagles second. Then Flyers.
Are u off the Chacin bandwagon?
I am not. Should I be?
Do you feel the need to draft an elite TE, or do you mix and match with some upside guys? Have my eye on Pettigre/Graham/NE TEs....who do you like?
Tight end was deep last year and figures to be again. I mean, Tony Gonzalez wasn't taken in a recent mock. I know he's not the same level of awesome he used to be, but to reach Gates in round 3... or Gonzalez 10 rounds later. Easy call.
Freese? What do u hear?
If he could ever stay healthy, we'd have a .280-hitting guy with perhaps 20 home runs. But we have yet to see anything close to it.
Will Eric Young Jr ever have value? Discuss.
Can't get on base, can't play defense. Pinch runner type.
So you're throwing Jhouly's tonight? I don't know if i can stomach another 6BB performance...
I don't think the Dodgers have the personnel to walk that many times.
I just read a report on Peralta's arm being worn out. This a concern and would the Rays consider using Howell or McGee?
Perhaps. But don't believe everything you read. I don't. Except in this chat. I think McGee could get a shot, yes.
Who would you rather use your final OF spot on: Bourgeois, Snider, or Fowler?
Probably Fowler. Leads off, plays every day, I think he's starting to get it.
Lohse or Niemann? Deep enough league that they won't be available to stream.
Niemann has had a terrific July. Keep him around. As for Lohse, nobody listened back in May, apparently.
Can Vogelsong keep this up the ROS?
He can, but based on the numbers we see it would be tough to do.
Thoughts on K-rod? drop in 10 team league?
He's not a closer the final 2 months. It's not a timeshare at all. Never was.
Who is the most famous person that has walked by the new studio since you have been there, please beat the fantasy focus guys
Well, Matthew Berry just walked by. Does that count? A group of 10-year old kids walked by as well. And pretty much every college football coach in the south. Interesting day!
ROS: Dom Brown or Desmond Jennings?
Jennings. Easily. Sorry.
Sort of a follow up to that Freese question- do you think Pujols gets the one more start at 3b he needs for 2012 eligibility in my league?
I do not see Pujols playing any more at 3B.
What did you mean by Peralta is the AL version of Adams?
Looming closer with good stats by the end of the weekend that is not closing today.
76ers rank last huh? So you're a Hockey guy, that makes me re-evaluate everything I thought I knew about you.
Hockey is a terrific sport, especially in person. And I played it well as a kid. NBA vs. College hooops... easily college.
Are you targeting Blount at all this season? I think he could have a good year... maybe 1,300 yards and 10 TDs.
Not targeting the guy, but if he slips far enough, I could see decent numbers. Just remember he's not a speed guy....
As a senior fantasy writer, do you ever play pranks on the junior writers?
Wait, is that really my title?
Trout, Hosmer or Ackley Top 100 overall preseason next year? If not, would you keep them over borderline guys like Greinke and Ichiro?
All 5 will be in the top 100 next year.
Do you think Guerra will be the closer for the Dodgers on September 30th?
It certainly isn't Kuo.
I read your piece on Chipper & Alvarez....but now Chipper is day-to-day with a quad issue. Still rather Chipper over Pedro???
Sorry, but yes. Let's see Pedro keep taking walks... until then, be wary.
Should i trust Mike Williams from Tampa or T.O.?
Trust Mike. Healthy, young and has a job. And he's good...
Who would you drop Lilly for: Peralta, Clippard or Mujica?
At this point, all three. Something must be wrong with him. Ship has sailed.
And with that, our time is unfortunately up for today. Thanks for helping me make today's chat an entertaining one, and have a great day!
