Welcome to a special 1 pm chat. On the way to a wind tunnel test, so fire away.
Hi David. Love the picture of you watering Ernie! I'm sure he appreciated it.What are the chances the #17 can rally to win the championship this year?
Thanks. Keeping dogs cool in this temp is important and fun. as for Kenseth, I really like him as a darkhorse. He's quietly having a great year.
Do you think Rick regrets signing Kahne before Edwards became a free agent?
Interesting. I suspect everyone would love to have Carl, but you play the cards you're dealt. Rick Knew Carl would be a free agent this year, so if he wanted to get in the bidding he could have waited.
hey david i want jeff gordon to win on my mom's brithday this sunday please
I'll pass that along.
Which Sprint Cup Series Drivers will part ways with their Current Teams after the 2011 Season? Who will be the New Sprint Cup Series Drivers in 2012?
Carl Edwards is the biggest. Can't say I see many of the others leaving. As for new drivers, Trevor Bayne although he's close to that now. Perhaps Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
Although Danica may be a marketing machine, I don't really think she has the chops to be a competitive driver. If she races a full schedule in N'wide next year, I don't think she has any shot of finishing in the top ten in points. What do you think?
Really. If she had raced a full year this season I believe she'd be in the top 5. Look at her finishes in races she's entered. Has impressed me.
Hell-o David, You made the point that Rousch/Fenway will boost the effort on the 17 if Edwards is leaving. Matt is a Champion and has been fast all year. Fenning is one of the best and they may really make a run for the Cup. Your thoughts? Thanks, Bill
As I said earlier, I believe they're a solid darkhorse. And he's good on most of the Chase tracks, too.
Hi David, I just say a so-called NASCAR expert on tv predicting that Jr will have a bad run at Indy and drop out of the top 10 and miss the chase. Do you agree with that assessment?
This season is a lot like 2006 for Jr. where he started strong, faded and then finished sixth at Indy to turn things around. I see that possibly happening again.
Hey Newt, with Tryson, Pattie, Irwin and Berrier all getting fired why do you suppose HMS and SHR haven't fired Letarte and Grubb since #88 and #14 are winless too?
Because bothare in the top 10????
How does all of Ganassi and Juan Pablo Montoya Indy car success translate to Brickyard 400 success and is Indy more of Ganassi's house of Penske's?
Indy is a tricky place to get around. In some ways like a road course. Juan mastered it in open wheel and has made the transition to stock cars with it. He knows how to get around here as well or better than anyone. He should have won the last two.
Hi David, the last time Dale Jr. had multiple cup wins in a season was 2004 and he's only had 3 wins in the last 7 years. Do you think the 2004 fiery, Sonoma crash in that Corvette caused Jr. to lose his nerve and passion for racing as the cause for his downfall?
I don't. Sorry.
Newt, what do you think the chances are of another 1st time in '11 winner at Indy like maybe Juan Pablo?
Pretty good if it's Juan. If he doesn't win I look for one of the regulars to take it. Maybe JJ.
Hi Newt, the last time Hendrick allowed an outsider into HMS with Tony Eury Jr. as crew chief on the #88 and he ended up getting fired. Now Hendrick is doing it again with Kenny Francis to the #5. Do you think it will succeed this time? Why?
Francis and Kahne have had success together and they have a great relationship. It wasn't tumultuous as the Earnhardt-Eury Jr relationship. Yes, I think they'll succeed together. Big fan of Francis.
What Sprint Cup Series Races will we see Danica Patrick race in 2012?
Daytona 500 I'd almost bet my life. The rest I haven't studied the schedule closely enough to guess. I would say Chicago, Brickyard, Phoenix.
Newt! what a invocation at nasville!!! i loved it and it was pry the best part of night. What did you think of it?
Read my blog. Think it is still up under the Kyle Busch video. Wasn't a fan of it.
Would Nascar ever consider moving the Brickyard 400 to the chase, maybe even kicking the chase off with the Brickyard 400?
Haven't heard anything about that other than what another writer suggested. I would move Darlington into the Chase and start it with Bristol if it were me.
I was looking ahead at the upcoming Nascar Sprint Cup schedule and it looks like all of the off weeks are done. Is it a big deal for the drivers and teams to race 3 and 1/2 months without a break? Could driver/crew error cost a team championship caused from fatigue?
They've been doing this for a long time, so no big deal. Conditioning is important regardless, which may be why we've seen Jimmie, Denny and Carl up there a lot at the end.
David, any news on the Kenseth/Ragan/whoever drives the 99 sponsorship front? Also, if you're ever in Orlando stop by Golf Galaxy and say hi, perhaps even get a lesson our of it. Off to work, thanks again for the great insight.
Nothing new. Hearing Ragan and UPS have a decent chance to stay together. Hearing Bayne could replace Carl in the 99 if Carl goes to JGR as we all think. Love to have a lesson. My golf game could use a tuneup.
Hi DavidDo you think Clint Bowyer will resign with RCR Racing?
He says he plans to and Richard Childress says a deal is close. So I would say yes.
David, if Kasey Kahne doesn't make the Chase, could you see him going for the $5 million in the IndyCar finale at Las Vegas? I think it's a possibility given his affiliation with Red Bull.
Haven't heard anything about it but it would be fun to watch. Doubt he could win it without experience there, but you never know.
David, my question is do you think Carl is headed to Gibbs? And if so, isnt the biggest beneficiary Matt Kenseth? Even if Jack respects Carl and his decision, he cant be happy about losing his guy to a Toyota operation. I would think he would divert all efforts towards another cup for the 17. What do you think? Thanks
I do think Carl is gone, and it wouldn't surprise me at all to see Jack's efforts move to Matt. He's a proud man and appreciates loyalty. I'm just not sure how much you actually can transfer. Do you give him better engines if there really is a better engine? Do you give him crew members? Kenseth already has one of the best pit crews in the garage.
How do you think Kahne will do next year, considering he will be with what could be argued as the worst of the 4 HMS cars?
The cars really aren't all that different. It's more a matter of who's driving them and the crew chief that hits on the right setup. It'll be interesting to see how KK does. He obviously has a lot to prove.
What chances to you give the 17 to win it all this year?
What's your favorite track to watch a Sprint Cup race at?
Darlington and Martinsville. Sorry, couldn't pick one.
With the Kasey Kahne crash last weekend and other high profile drivers having off-track injuries the last few years, do you think team owners will begin limitinig what they allow their drivers to do away from the track as a way to help protect their investment?
It's happened before. Usually when something like this happens there's a knee-jerk reaction to limit things. Not sure Joe Gibbs will keep Kyle out of races, though.
What number will be higher... the pole speed for the NW race (last years was 110 mph) or the attendance at the Brickyard, in thousands?
Will be awflly close. Right now I'd say the pole speed.
will there be any new features showcased with ESPN/ABC's coverage of Nascar this year to tell us about?
Know they're doing the split screen more late in the race with commercials. There probably are a few other things I haven't heard about as well. Tune in and find out.
Marcos Ambrose got hounded by the media at Infineon this year for giving away last year's race. Will we see similar questions for JPM this weekend about giving away TWO Brickyard 400s?
Juan's wasn't quite as bad, but he'll get more than his fair share of hounding.
what was more distracting on the studio of NascarNow this week? Nate's hands, NB's great looks or Utter's whiny voice? lol
Wasn't distracted by any of that to be honest. Had a fun time and enjoyed the few digs we were able to work in. Nicole did a great job of managing us.
Hey David, Marty said Hi. What kind of deadline do you think Carl is on to make his decision? It has to be soon for all the sponsorships and things, right?
Roush execs want to know now. I'd say within the week.
Does the move of Kenny Francis going with Kasey Kahne to Hendrick set up them moving early before the season ends? After reading your column on JJ and Knaus, what do you think of the pairing?
No, can't see Hendrick moving Mark out of that ride unless Mark reaches some deal to drive for Red Bull or whatever it is called next year. As for JJ and Knaus, I can't think of a better pairing. That wasn't the point. The point is will they be able to keep it together. Few have.
Who says Carl is better than Kahne? Kahne has done the MOST with his equipment for what I can remember.
Interesting stat that I'll be writing about tomorrow. Of the so-called majors _ Daytona 500, Brickyard 400, Coke 600 and Darlington, Carl is winless. Kahne at least has won the Coke 600.
Of all the ovals, where does Indy rank in terms of the importance of qualifying? It's gotta be right up there with Darlington.
Hard to put a number on it. With the way teams are able to gamble on two tires and no tires track position can be made up easier than in the past.
There is 1 solid wildcard right now with a win. Who will be the other one?
Supppose you are talking about Ragan. Still think Keselowski will slip into the picture. But what if Hamlin slips out of the top 10. That puts him in the driver's seat. OR what if Gordon slips out with two wins. He'd be a lock and knock somebody else out.
Newt, what is the deal with fans worrying about Steve and Dale's communication? They are still better at communicating than the previous 2 and I see no change needed. At some point a driver and cc will get frustrated and say things or yell, but will get over it.
Agree. There's nothing serious wrong with that team that a solid finish at Indy won't cure.
What is your guess of when Carl's announcement will come? This weekend? I hope he stays... The Ford and Roush camps will both be hurting for years!
I'm told not this weekend, but it wouldnt' surprise me if it's next week.
Hi David, Do you think Brian Pattie wants to be a Crew Chief or in upper management? I get the feeling he is not comfortable with making the pressure calls on top of the box but a brilliant engineer and good manager. Your take?
I don't think Pattie was the problem with JPM. As to where he wants to be we haven't discussed that. I see him being a crew chief for somebody else, though.
Whats the deal with the 33? Been a bit of a rough patch. In or out of the Chase? And is he back at RCR next year? Thanks
Seems Clint has been on the bubble since he came to Cup. Yes, I think he'll be at RCR next year. Just tying up loose sponsor ends.
Hey David, why not hold the Newton family reunion on my property this weekend? There's plenty of seats for everybody!
Funny you say that. The reunion is next weekend. Once was considered the largest in the Carolinas. Not sure Indy is big enough. Kidding.
My honest opinion i think Kasey is overrated. I think is alot better driver. Im not a fan of either one. I guess we will have to wait and c when next year
He showed promise the year he won five times. Most saw great things coming. Most didn't see the turmoil he's been through with race teams. I'd give him another year or two before judging.
Not to sound like a broken record, but The Chase has probably helped keep the core of the 48 team together more than anything outside of that. We can argue until the end of time, but other teams have had better overall numbers in comparison to the 48 some years.
Agree that success has kept the team together. Not sure you can find better number during the past five years. Not enough to say JJ wasn't the deserving champion.
Is Jeff Burton done?
I don't think so. He's ressurected his career once before. I think we'll see him bounce back.
Any word on Jay Frye and investors? Will the team survive or go under with Red Bull backing out?
I'm told they are still getting solid inquiries, but the longer this drags out the more skeptical I'll become. I wouldn't be surprised to see Red Bull on the car as a sponsor in the future even if the team goes under.
Just FYI... Dale Jr's favorite racing simulator, iRacing, is releasing its 2.0 version within the next week. You might have to go back to his house and test out the new, realistic tire model!
Sounds like fun. One of the more enjoyable stories I've done.
Are you as bummed as a lot of us are about the N'wide race moving from the short track at Lucas Oil Speedway to Indy?
Yep. The series needs more short tracks.
Hey David, what are the chances Jeff Gordon wins the Brickyard 400 on sunday and what are his chances to win the championship?
He's one of my top two picks for this weekend. The championship, you never know. It would be a great story if he could pull it off.
That's it for me folks. Have to run meet Tim Brewer at a wind tunnel. Remember to tune into the race this weekend. Later.
