Chat with Rich Cimini

Rich Cimini
  (1:02 PM)

Just like the NFL, I'm late. But I'm here, so let's go.

Ethan (Connecticut)

Hey Rich,This might be a little bit of a utopian mindset, but I was wondering if it would be possible for the Jets to sign one WR, either Edwards or Holmes, lose the other, Smith, and Cromartie, and still be able to sign Asomugha. Thanks.

Rich Cimini
  (1:04 PM)

That would be tough to do, but Tannenbaum and his crew are pretty creative. I don't think they compete financially with Houston, but if NA really wants to play for the Jets ... it's a long shot, but not impossible.

IRA (Staten Island)

Rich,How much guaranteed money to you really think the Jets will offer Holmes. I say 45 mill deal with 24 guaranteed. Your thoughts?

Rich Cimini
  (1:05 PM)

That would be a five-year deal, I'm assuming. Those numbers sound about right.

Jason (New jersey)

Rich, what is the status of the tenders that were places on Cromartie and Holmes before the lockout? If one or both are signed by another team, would we still get the 1st and 3rd round compensation?

Rich Cimini
  (1:06 PM)

All those tenders are moot now.

Ryan Andrews (Franklin Square)

Do you see the Jets going out and getting a superior pass rusher within the next few days?like for instance, Jason Babin?

Rich Cimini
  (1:06 PM)

Babin had one good year, so I'd be leery of him. He also did it in a 4-3 scheme. Previously, he was a flop in the 3-4.

Dave (New York, NY)

What is your opinion on Cromartie's value? To me his in average corner that does not play the least bit physical. He gave up a number of huge plays last season. How difficult would it be to replace him via free agency at better value?

Rich Cimini
  (1:08 PM)

You're selling him short; he's better than average. He has the physical skills to be great, but he gets lazy with technique and commits a lot of penalties. The Jets would like to re-sign him, but, remember, they have Wilson and the CB market is fairly deep.

Lee (Kenilworth)

Are the Jets going to be able to re-sign Shaun Ellis, behind Holmes and a CB, he is the most important guy for them to get.

Rich Cimini
  (1:09 PM)

Well, I don't think he's priority No. 2 after Holmes. He's long in the tooth. SE can still play and he's a good locker room guy, but you can't go crazy over a 34 year old DE.

Ryan Andrews (Franklin Square)

Rich what do you think about the Jets confidence in Kyle Wilson? If they do not sign Cro, will they give Kyle the corner spot opposite Revis, or should we pencil him in only on Nickel packages?

Rich Cimini
  (1:10 PM)

Jets still have high hopes for Wilson, but I don't think they're gonna hand him that job. If they lose Cro, they will sign a vet to come in and compete with KW for the No. 2 job.

Alex (NYC)

The franchise tender for Harris is at about 10 million against the cap as of now. Once he signs a long-term deal, how much do you think will actually hit the cap this year?

Rich Cimini
  (1:12 PM)

It's 10.4 Mil to be exact. They can probably cut that number in half with a long-term deal.

wstcoastjetfan (Los Angeles)

stories are already out about some players being contacted by teams, i.e. Damion Woody, Brad Smith, etc... Any early word on Holmes, Edwards, Cromartie, Nmandi????

Rich Cimini
  (1:14 PM)

I'm sure the Jets have contacted the agents for all those guys. That's what they're supposed to do. But the agents, of course, will try to create a bidding war. That's how this works.

Scot (Washington, DC )

Is the plan at this point to give Greene roughly 1/2 the carries, with LT and McKnight splitting the other half?

Rich Cimini
  (1:15 PM)

I could see Greene with about 250 carries. As for the rest, a lot depends on McKnight. You know what you'll get from LT.

Jason (NJ)

is their any scenario that would allow the jets to bring back both Holmes and Edwards?

Rich Cimini
  (1:15 PM)

I'd be really surprised. I don't see that happening.

JP (CT)

Any word on cap cuts for the Jets? (i.e. Bryan Thomas and others)

Rich Cimini
  (1:17 PM)

Everybody keeps speculating on Bryan Thomas. But if you cut him, who takes his place? Westerman? I don't see it happening unless they sign a vet OLB.

Brian (NY)

Rich, Do you think Conners is ready to step in as the starting FB this season?

Rich Cimini
  (1:17 PM)

No question. He IS the starting FB.

Brett (CT)

What will Jets do if we lose Cromartie and cant get Asomugha?

Rich Cimini
  (1:18 PM)

Hope the other team runs the ball a lot. No, seriously ... They still have Wilson and I think they'd sign a vet, like Chris Carr, to compete with KW for the starting job.

SJ (Randolph)

Rich, I noticed that Jane McManus tweeted that Damien Woody is unlikely to return to the Jets. Why is Jane under that impression? As you tweeted earlier today, the Jets have already contacted Woody's agent. Furthermore, Woody said on the Stephen A. Smith show that he wants to come back. IMO, Woody will be signed to a contract sometime next week.

Rich Cimini
  (1:20 PM)

Jets appear to be very interested in re-signing Woody, but I don't think it's slam dunk that he returns. I think he's considering his options.

Bill (Montauk)

Is a Steve Smith trade from the Panthers a realistic option?

Rich Cimini
  (1:21 PM)

There were rumblings a couple of months ago about a possible trade. I think he could be an option if the Jets lose a WR. Jets and Panthers have been trading partners before (see K Jenkins).

Shane (Los Angeles, CA)

Just FYI, Rich, in case you missed it, Cromartie was very clear on Sirius NFL radio that he would NOT give the Jets a hometown discount. At least you can say he is honest!

Rich Cimini
  (1:22 PM)

Honesty or posturing?

Doug (D.C.)

Do you expect the draft picks to sign pretty quickly? Wants going on with the legal situation with the DT from Hampton?

Rich Cimini
  (1:23 PM)

Ellis is in the clear until November, when his trial is scheduled. I wouldn't be surprised if it's postponed until the offseason.

Vladislav Ginzburg (New York City)

Is there any significance to the Josh Baker signing? Can he actually compete for a spot on the roster or was it a leverage signing towards Brad Smith negotiations this week? The timing (last night) is somewhat curious for a relatively unheralded UFA

Rich Cimini
  (1:24 PM)

Folks, don't put too much stock into these UDFA signings. Look, I'm happy for these players and some turn out to be nice players, but don't read too much into them. They have no impact on who stays and who goes.

Tony B. (Raleigh, NC)

Rich, I saw on the ESPN Twitter feed that the Jets signed an undrafted rookie free agent SS from Virginia Tech. Which of the free agent safeties do you think they're replacing: Leonhard, Smith, Pool, or Ihedigbo?

Rich Cimini
  (1:25 PM)

Tony, read my previous response.

Alex (Long Island)

Are there any affordable pass rushers out there that the Jets could make a play for?

Rich Cimini
  (1:26 PM)

Elite pass rushers rarely reach the open market. When they do (i.e. Julius Peppers last year), they cost major bucks.

Ryan Andrews (Franklin Square)

Specifically regarding Mark Sanchez's development, how important is it for the Jets to either retain or sign at least one big-time receiver (alla Santonio/Braylon/Randy/Plax/S.Smith)?

Rich Cimini
  (1:27 PM)

Very, very important. Sanchez is a young, maturing quarterback with some accuracy issues, and he needs a legit No. 1 WR.

Tony (Pt Jeff, NY)

Seems like Holmes on one side and Plaxico on the other would be an awesome tandem, you? also- cromartie- likely re-sign? thanks for the time.

Rich Cimini
  (1:29 PM)

Yeah, Holmes-Plax would be quite a tandem, and don't forget about Cotchery. Everybody seems to be sleeping on JCO. If healthy (and I think he is), he's a very solid WR.

Rich Cimini
  (1:31 PM)

Yeah, Holmes-Plax would be quite a tandem, and don't forget about Cotchery. Everybody seems to be sleeping on JCO. If healthy (and I think he is), he's a very solid WR.

think your submit key is broken

Rich Cimini
  (1:35 PM)

Sorry, folks, technical issues.

Pete (Nashville)

Having some technical issues there Rich? Any chance the Jets do a second season on Hard Kocks?

Rich Cimini
  (1:36 PM)

No shot ... this year.

Bryan (NYC)

Why do the Jets want to hang on to LT? He wasn't all that productive and would create some cap room for all those big FAs.

Rich Cimini
  (1:37 PM)

Actually, his cap number isn't that big...I think around $2.5 mil. He's their best pass-catching back, and that's big for Sanchez. Also invaluable presence in the locker room.

Lee (Roxbury, NJ)

Would the Jets look to give Mark Sanchez a contract extension to get some salary cap relief?

Rich Cimini
  (1:39 PM)

Ordinarily, they would, but there's a clause in the new CBA that says players can't renegotiate before their 3rd yr. Not sure if that applies to incoming players only, or all players under 3 yrs. I'm checking. I think MS would re-do his deal to create cap room, if it's allowed.

Daniel (Florida)

How is Jim Leonhard looking?

Rich Cimini
  (1:40 PM)

Haven't seen him, but I spoke to him yesterday and he said he's been training for camp like he normally would. But jets docs still haven't examined him, so it's premature to say he's 100 pct cleared for camp.

Pete (Nashville)

How much do you see the lock-out affecting the level of play this season? Do you think the Jets benefit from that as a running orientated/defensive/veteran team?

Rich Cimini
  (1:41 PM)

I think the overall play will be kind of ragged early in the season, especially passing games. I also think quality of tackling will suffer without much hitting in camp.

Robert (Poconos PA)

Is Jonathan Joseph a good fit if cromartie is out of the picture?

Rich Cimini
  (1:42 PM)

Not a bad thought, but as of 1 hr ago, they hadn't shown any interest in JJ.

Mike (Boston)

Rich, any chance the Jets go after Terrell Pryor for a Brad Smith replacement?

Rich Cimini
  (1:42 PM)

He'd have to take a pay cut from his Ohio State days. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Matt (Fair Lawn, NJ )

Why it be a good investment to re-sign Jason Taylor to a one year deal? He played well in the clutch last year (Pitt & Miami) and he still has some left in the tank.

Rich Cimini
  (1:44 PM)

I don't know about that. To paraphrase JT, I think that ship has sailed.

Lee (Kenilworth, NJ)

With Weatherford and Folk free agents, will the Jets look to re-sign them or look elsewhere? Will the new two a days rules hurt the Jet's special teams?

Rich Cimini
  (1:45 PM)

Wouldn't be surprised if the Jets sign P Brad Maynard, who reportedly is getting cut by the Bears. And, yes, no 2-a-days will hurt the Westhoffs.

Ryan Andrews (Franklin Square)

With rumors of the Jets interest in players such as Randy Moss, Steve Smith, Plaxico Burress, and even T.O., do you feel that any of these personality's would be TOO BIG for even Rex to handle?

Rich Cimini
  (1:46 PM)

Well, TO has a knee injury, so forget about him. Moss would be a challenge for Rex because, unlike the others you mentioned, Moss is known for dogging it on the field.

Eric (Bethlehem, PA)

Rich,What percent chance do the Jets have of landing Asomugha? If the Jets were able to sign him, would they have any cap room left for Santonio Holmes or Braylon Edwards? Also, what do you think it would take to get Steve Smith from the Carolina Panthers in a trade?

Rich Cimini
  (1:48 PM)

I'd say 25 pct at best. If it comes down to money, the Jets are sunk. They could re-sign a WR, depending on the price. Smith? I'd wouldn't give more than a 3rd rounder.

Richard (KCK)

Could you see the Jets trading for Vincent Jackson if they lose both of their own WRs?

Rich Cimini
  (1:49 PM)

No.

IRA (Staten Island)

Rich, With all this Asomugha talk sure it would give the Jets the best pair of CB's in NFL history. But please teams will just tackle their nickels, dimes and make LB's cover. Your thoughts?

Rich Cimini
  (1:50 PM)

Great point, Ira. The Jets still would be vulnerable to No. 3 WR and TE, but they'd have an extra man in coverage based on the premise that Asomuha and Revis would handle their guys man-too-man. Having that safety in the middle would help.

Daniel (Florida)

Hey Rich, thanks for coming out.I am really nervous for this week because it sounds like we will be losing a lot of the players that I, personally, came to enjoy playing every week. What are the chances that we are able to keep everyone?

Rich Cimini
  (1:51 PM)

No chance to keep everyone. But, hey, that's life in the NFL. There's a 30 pct turnover on rosters every year.

Anthony (Bergen County)

Rich, do you think it's possible that the Jets would go after Asomugha hard, and then try and get a receiver like Lance Moore instead of Holmes or Edwards to save a little cash?

Rich Cimini
  (1:52 PM)

I don't see that happening. The Jets realize they need a legit No. 1 receiver to make sure the offense doesn't take a step back.,

Andrew (NYC)

Any more Randy Moss buzz? I know you've been outspoken against it, but what's the word on him?

Rich Cimini
  (1:53 PM)

Haven't heard anything so far. He's a second-tier guy. They usually come into play after the first wave.

Rich Cimini
  (1:54 PM)

Well, that's about it for me. Sorry to cut it short, but I have to get back to the other stuff. Thanks for the great questions. Keep following ESPN NY, we'll have all the FA news. Have a great day. Rich
