Hey, everybody. Welcome back after a week away from chatting, thanks to Big 12 Media Days. I've got lots of time and a solid playlist queued up. Let's do this.
Are we really going to have to go through this whole thing again next year?
My guess is no, but the NCAA will have a lot to do with whether that's the case or not.
who will be the starter for Texas McCoy or Gilbert
I'm going with Gilbert. Felt that way all offseason, and I haven't heard or seen much to change my mind.
I know that college football has about a third as many games as college basketball but what if college football conferences adopted the annual conference challenge like college basketball does with the ACC/Big Ten Challenge?
I love it in theory, but it'll never happen. Too many schools with too many different policies for scheduling nonconference games, especially in the Big 12 where you only get three now. If you hadn't noticed, Oklahoma and Texas Tech are essentially polar opposites in scheduling nonconference games. Why would either school change?
What's been the reaction about Bo's comments on the officiating during the aTm game?
Not much. There's not much that's going to happen at this point. I don't buy it, but I do think Bo believes an official said something to that effect. Doesn't mean that's what an official meant, but Bo also realizes that his reactions during the game brought some of that on himself.
How much 1st round talent is on Texas A
I don't know if you can say flat-out first-round talent, but safe to say all those guys will probably play at the next level, as will Ryan Tannehill, their quarterback.
Which QB gives Texas the best shot at 9 victories this year Wood, McCoy or Gilbert? If Gilbert is unable to gain the trust of the players around him I see more internal issues arising as long as he continues to start...if that is the case. Whatchu know about them Texas Boyz!
Every indication I've gotten is that Gilbert is the most vocal of the three quarterbacks, unlike the situation at Missouri, where Tyler Gabbert was a lot more vocal than James Franklin, which could have gotten awkward at some point. I don't think gaining his teammates' trust is going to be a problem for Gilbert. Everyone on that offense understands no one got it done last year.
Is it football season yet?
A little over four weeks. I can't wait.
Can I take a guess at the no.1 in the Top 25? Justin Blackmon? It's too easy isn't it!
Gotta wait to find out on that one.
Will KU win a game in the Big 12?
1-2. They'll be more competitive, but still a long way to go. Solid start on the recruiting trail for 2011, but the 2012 class has to get some steam before February.
Am I crazy to think if everything goes right Tech can start the season 6-0? The toughest game will be aTm, but we get them at the Jones after they have played Ark and oSu. I think it is very possible.
Yeah, it's possible. They're a dark horse to do it. I'm not betting on it, but Tech will show up in the top 25 early this season.
Mizzou historically always seems to be a let down in clutch moments. With last year's OU victory, what are the chances that the Tigers can finally bring everything together and land themselves in the Big 12 Championship game or better?
Missouri could put it together, but I don't care what they do...there's zero chance Missouri gets to the Big 12 Championship game this year. I'd bet my life on it.
Does OKstate have the hardest schedule in the Big 12?
It's up there. Iowa State, Oklahoma and Texas A&M have tough ones, too.
what team has the most bust potential when looking at preseason hype?
David, does it seem like Tommy T. wants to be somewhere else? Judging by some of his comments, it just doesn't seem like he has ever been on board with the Big 12..Would he jump ship the first chance he gets to get back to the SEC?
I think Texas Tech is a good fit for him as a school, but I'm not sure I buy that. If the Red Raiders end up in a different league that's not going to give him a chance for big success, he'll leave. I just don't see that happening. It could, in theory. But I don't believe it will.
as of right now, who do you got between BYU vs Texas?
How much trouble am i in if Jaxon Shipley is my best player this year.
Some trouble, I guess. But I see Shipley contributing. 20-40 catches, I'd say.
Has Tubs turned the corner on the recruiting trail in Lubbock?
Certainly looks like it. He's brought in some big time guys almost immediately. Leon Mackey and Delvon Simmons are exciting players, and next year's class has big time receivers, including Dominique Wheeler. I'd expect the 2012 class to be the best ever for the Red Raiders, topping the 2011 class.
What kind of stats (special teams too) does Ryan Broyles need to put up in order to win the Heisman
I liked Justin Blackmon's quote from media days. Pretty accurate, I'd say. "2,500 yards and 30 touchdowns."
Tom Luginbill touted the OU/Aggie game as one of the Top 5 Games that will help determine the National Champion. Are you buying or selling the Aggies as National Championship Contenders?
Not quite national title contenders. I just don't see them winning a night game in Norman. They could win a tiebreak at the end of the season and win the Big 12 or reach the BCS, but I'd be shocked if A&M knocked off the Sooners.
What do you think of Bill Snyder's comments on Bryce Brown's work ethic?
Not promising. I'm just not sold on Brown just yet. The physical skills are there, but it takes a lot more to be a constant force in this league like Daniel Thomas was. Arthur Brown has obviously earned his coach's trust. Bryce still has work to do.
O/U 9.5 wins for Texas A&M?O/U 8.5 for Texas?
I'll take the over on A&M. The under on Texas.
Who are OKstate's non-conference opponents?
Tulsa, Arizona and Louisana-Lafayette, I think.
Can you hide your bias view a little better? From what I can tell your man crush on everything non-UT comes through in every chat you do...
Sorry for not fawning over a five-win team with self-declared "entitlement" issues.
Any chance Sirr Parker's TD against K-State in the '98 championship game makes the "Yards to Glory" list?
Gotta keep watching.
I've seen a wide variation of predictions as far as Mizzou's preseason rank. Rivals has it at 35. Maybe I'm just a fanboy but that seems very low to me considering how outside of that and a deep threat receiver Mizzou is very solid to great. What do you think?
Missouri is somewhat polarizing this year for folks, I think. I've seen them all over the map on preseason polls. I'm higher on them than most because of my confidence in the Tigers' quarterback development for Franklin, but for as much attention as Gabbert's departure got, Franklin doesn't have to do a ton to replace his production. He doesn't have the physical skills Gabbert did, but Missouri is talented all over the place. Have to like their chances to flirt with 10 wins. Will depend on how the ball bounces in conference play.
If A&M posts an 11-1 season or better, what are the chances cyrus gray or Jeff Fuller win the Heisman?
Gray will have a good shot. Slim to none for Fuller.
O/U 1200 rec. yards for Jeff Fuller?
I'll take the under. Probably around 1150.
The last 2 years weve seen Denario Alexander and Justin Blackmon absolutely explode onto the scene, is there a talent like that out there this year waiting to blow up?
If we're talking receivers, I'd say Marcus Kennard, Mike Davis and Josh Gordon are good picks to come out of nowhere and have huge years.
Where will you be for week 1?
Don't know just yet. We'll probably announce it on the blog on Thursday of each game week like we did last year.
You mentioned that is was a good idea for KU to switch to a 3-4 defense. This late into the season and with little size or talent at the NT position, how is that a good idea? They are going to get ran all over
As opposed to last year? The main reason is they're really deep and have a ton of talent at linebacker. Kansas needs to find a way to get the most talent on the field it can. Putting in the 3-4 is a good way to do it, regardless of their lack of depth at NT.
What is your favorite stadium in the big 12 and who do you think has the best game day atmosphere?
Texas has the best stadium. Texas A&M has the best game day atmosphere.
What is Texas A&M's record after 5 games?SMUIdahoOkStArky (JerryWorld)@Texas Tech
Is there a statute of limitations for my complaining about being shafted by Texas and the Big "whatever"?
I don't think so, but in his defense, this wasn't a random rant. He was asked directly about it.
Ubbs, who do you think will step up as Landry Jones' third reliable receiving target?
So was the rumor untrue about Gordon getting kicked off the team?
He's suspended indefinitely. I'd be surprised if he didn't miss the opener against TCU.
If you were coach, would you pick R. Tannehill or R. Griffin as your starter at QB?
Not a fair question. It totally depends on what kind of offense you're running. Tannehill and Griffin are perfectly suited for what their teams run. Both would be significantly less effective if they played in different schemes.
I saw you at Taco Joint in Dallas.....which do you prefer Torchys or Taco Joint?
Ha. I've never been to Torchy's actually, so probably the latter.
How do you rate the Sooners offensive and defensive lines in the Big XII this year?
Oklahoma's O-line is the fifth best in the Big 12. Defensive line is the second best, if my memory serves me correctly.
Who"s next in line for new Uni's? OSU seemed to turn out ok. Anyone else drinking the DUCK kool-aid?
I haven't heard anything. OSU's uniforms are pretty great, though.
What exactly do you think it will take for A&M to get rid of the "little brother" perception with Texas?
Not gonna happen. The inferiority complex with A&M toward Texas has intensified quite a bit over the past year, despite A
What kind of impact do you see young potential stars Jeffcoat and Hicks having on the Texas D? Ceilings for both?
Hicks is promising, but honestly, I haven't seen him play a ton, so I can't say much about him. Totally love what Jeffcoat did last year. He's going to be a star if he stays healthy. Mack Brown lamented at Media Days last week his diagnosis of the high ankle sprain, which pretty much ended his season.
If you had to choose one game to travel back to Aggieland for this season, which would it be?
Oklahoma State, no doubt. But here's guessing I'll spend plenty of time at Kyle Field this year. Will definitely get another fix of Midnight Yell Practice.
Dubbs, who do you think would take the furthest tumble if their star player was injured for the season?
Probably Baylor again. They could conceivably with 10 games with RG3. Without him, I don't see them winning more than six.
What are the chances Tommy Tuberville has a 9-10 win season and leaves Tech for a better job?
Not good. He's not looking to climb the ladder. He's been around. I talked to him about that in depth this spring. Basically, he wants to be somewhere he can be happy and coach football. That's Tech for him right now.
STOP! HAMMER TIME!
Texas A&M seems to think someone cares if they bolt for the SEC....Texas doesn't. Realistically how do you think the Aggies would do...considering over the past 10 years they couldn't hold their own in the BIG 12
Ha, let's not kid ourselves here. People care if Texas A&M leaves. I do think that could likely usher in the end of the Big 12 as we know it, and lots of folks care about that, Texas included, which would have some very difficult decisions to make if it happened. As for how Texas A
When I say they would have trouble winning there, people want to make it seem like they'd be a cellar dweller. Not so. They'd win and go to bowl games consistently. But winning big? Not a good chance to do that consistently, with the caliber of programs at the top of the SEC that are used to playing SEC-style football.
You really should try to get that issue fixed regarding your message getting cut off on the second & symbol.
Trying. Here's that full response from earlier: "Ha, let's not kid ourselves here. People care if Texas AM leaves. I do think that could likely usher in the end of the Big 12 as we know it, and lots of folks care about that, Texas included, which would have some very difficult decisions to make if it happened. As for how Texas AM would do in the SEC, I'd see them winning one conference title every 10-20 years.
A couple more questions before we wrap up...
Assuming a few more seasons comparable to last year, how many more years do you expect Tim DeRuyter to be in Aggieland
1-2. He has head coach written all over him.
A&M fans love to complain to me when I talk about DeRuyter leaving, but hey...welcome to Oklahoma's world, guys. Want to be a top-flight program? Get used to coordinators leaving.
Kevin Sumlin, Mike Leach, Mark Mangino, Kevin Wilson...ring any bells?
Assume Fuller, Broyels, and Blackmon all get injured and are out for the season before the first game. Which team takes the biggest hit in offensive production?
When will Missouri's AD come to his senses and get a live tiger as a mascot?
I'd love to see it.
Who's better? 2010 Von Miller or 2011 Travis Lewis?
2010 Von Miller.
OK, thanks for all the questions. See you all again next week!
