What's cooking with the chat nation?
Love the wildcard system, but I'd like to see 1 tweak. What if NASCAR let any driver in the top 20 with 2 or more wins into the chase?
My suggestion earlier was any driver that wins a race makes the Chase as long as he finished in the top 20 of the standings. If that ended up being 15 guys in the playoff, the more the merrier. But overall, this is a huge improvement.
Is there anything NASCAR can do to make Pocono less boring for spectators? If it wasn't for beer, I would have fallen asleep in June.
I hear ya. Here's what they can do: Shorten one of the two Cup races to 400 miles and move the other somewhere else.
Terry, other than Gordon and Kenseth, it seems that the old guard of Stewart, Junior, Burton, Labonte, Martin, Biff are pretty much finished and can't win any more?
I definitely wouldn't throw Biff in that category, and maybe not Jr. He's come very close to win several times this year. Burton is having a horrible year, but i don't know that he's done.
Should I be worried about Hamlin making the chase?
Yes, unless he wins another race, and he could do that Sunday since Pocono is his best track. Two will be enough to make it in.
It seems to me that if Carl were staying with Roush, he would have declared it by now. Right?
Not so sure. Ford has become a player in this deal recently, putting some big money in the Roush pot to try to convince Carl to stay. But I still think he's gone.
Hey Terry, great story and totally agree '11 best season ever cause we really need new blood in NASCAR. With first timers winning 20% (4 of 20 races) is this the beginning of the much needed NASCAR youth movement?
It certainly helps. NASCAR needs younger guys to win more races because it helps bring in younger fans.
What are your 3 drivers to watch this weekend at pocono and also your dark horse pick thanks
Gordon, Hamlin, Kyle. My darkhorse is Montoya.
I think it's sad that we are losing Nashville right after NASCAR pulled the race from LORP in Indy. Just doesn't seem that NASCAR is heading in the right direction. Maybe NASCAR should lower the fee's these small tracks pay. Stop trying to make a fortune off the little people's back.
Agreed AJ. Stand-alone sites just can't make it work. But I don't tink sanctioning fees are going down.
Do we see jimmie losing the cup this year maybe a kyle harvick or gordon can take it or do you see someone like kenseth or kurt raising the crown
I think it's a free-for-all at this point. My pick all along was carl, but I don't think he can win it as a lame-duck team.
Brickyard 400 was the best Indy race I can remember and the 2 LOR races were not so good. Doesn't that prove the decision to move NW to the big track was correct, plus the non-existent facilities at LOR?
No, and I didn't think the LOR races were bad. But the facilty is in poor shape.
What do you see from Allmendinger and Montoya in the upcoming weeks?
JPM has an excellent chance of winning again at The Glen. AJ could become the next first-time winner, I wouldn't count on it.
Terry what is your honest opinion on fuel mileage races?
Sometimes I like it; sometimes I don't. I have to admit, the end of the Brickyard 400 was pretty dramatic.
With Biffle's comments at Indy, didn't it seem like Carl is leaving and that it's just a matter of an announcement? Is Carl going to have "The Decision" on ESPN?
Negative. Carl won't play Lebron. But I think he's leaning toward Gibbs.
Do you see more wins for the 24 this year?
I think he's the favorite to win on Sunday.
Isn't IMS going to look empty/bad with 30,000 people in the stands for a NNS race?
Yes, it looks empty to 100,000, but they are hoping to draw more than 30,000, maybe 50,000. the real desire is to bring more people to the Cup race.
Do you think Biffle, Kenseth and Ragan will miss Edwards if he leaves? It seems to me like they wouldn't mind if he left and might even box his stuff up for him lol
I don't think they ar BFFs, but they also understand the importance Carl has to the organization.
When do you think Carl will announce his decision?
Some are guessing he will announce Labor Day weekend in Atlanta since that's Home Depot's headquarters. But that's still a month away. I think he could come sooner.
Wouldn't it have made sense to have the NNS run the road course at Indy like the grand-am guys are so the prestige of the Brickyard 400 on Sunday wouldn't have been tarnished even more?
Not a bad idea, but it would cut down the number of Cup guys competing in the NW event. That's OK with me, but it's not OK with IMS.
Terry, were you more surprised that Rowdy Busch rallied from sure disaster to finish 10th or Junior dumping from leading to 16th?
Kyle's comeback. That was impressive. Jr ended up on the wrong end of the fuel mileage deal, as did a lot of guys. They couldn't make up the track position.
On Carl I have heard that him leaving the 99 is basically a done deal. Just waiting on an announcement.
That's what everyone assumes, but I've seen bigger surprises over the years than him shocking us by saying he's staying at RFR.
What race's do you think Danica is in with SHR next year ? I say, Daytona (2) - Charlotte - Talladega (2) - Indy - Chicago
I wouldn't be surprised if she ran the Daytona 500. She has a lot of track time at Daytona and she's good in plate races.
Brad Keselowski just posted post wreck pictures on twitter. HOLY COW. Simply amazing he wasn't seriously injured or killed.
Thank goodness he's OK.
Terry, when do you think that Danica will make her announcement and also when does Jr make his announcement on his contract extension?
Danica may want to wait until the IndyCar season is over, but that's mid-October. Might be tough to wait that long. There's no rush in Junior's deal because he still has a year left on the current contract, but it's coming.
Who do you think is the leading to candidate to replace edwards in the 99 if edwards leaves roush?
Trevor Bayne. Anyone else would surprise me.
Do you think Harvick's a bit of a pretender? He could easily be riding an oh-fer, and he hasn't made much noise for months now
A pretender? The man has won three races this year. He's no pretender. He's a solid driver who could make a run in the Chase.
Would Ricky Stenhouse the drive the Wood Brothers car?
That would be my guess. It's the logical move because Roush may need to cut back on his Nationwide program.
Would it be a safe bet that the 88 will not win this season or make the chase?
Not at all. I think he still has at least A 50/50 shot at it.
Does Kurt Busch have the shortest fuse of any driver you've ever seen?
I've seen a lot of short fuses over the years. Hard to top Foyt in his prime. But I thought Kurt's comment Sunday was hilarious when he said about his engine temp "It's 310 degrees, just like me.".
Will we see Goodyear bring a tire that has more falloff to any races this year? It is getting old seeing every race end in fuel mileage.
I don't see that changing much. It's a fine line. Tires that fall off more easily also blow out more easily.
Will Red Bull be back next year?
I still think the team will return in some form, maybe just limping through 2012 until major sponsors can come on in 2013.
Hey Terry, Has David Ragan done enough to keep his ride for next season????
It's up to UPS. I think he's done enough in Jack's eyes, but I'm not sure how the UPS folks feel about it.
terry, What has been your favorite race of the season this far? the most boring to you?
That Dega finish with Jr. pushing JJ was fun to watch. Any Pocono race usually brings some nap time for me.
Do you think the 48 team will get it's pit road problems solved or will the pressure of going for 6 in a row finally cause them to crack?
The pressure won't hurt them. That would have shown up long ago. That team thrives when the heat is on down the stretch. If I know Chad, he'll have his ducks in line come Chase time.
terry, i agree with you about pocono. i say this: shorten on to 110 laps. and give the other one to iowa or to nashville
Iowa is a nice facilty, but the problem is NASCAR has oversaturation in the Midwest right now _ Indy, Chicagoland, Michigan, and Kentucky.
A pillow and a comfy couch is definately required for Pocono. Will NASCAR ever have the guts to shorten the races or drop one of the races there from the schedule?
The France family has a close relationship with Mattioli. He has said the races will always be 500 miles as long as he owns the track. And NASCAR won't take a race from Pocono because it's the closest track to the New York market.
Kentucky is in the Midwest?
It's less than 250 miles from all the tracks I mentioned, including Bristol. That's too many Cup races too close together geographically.
How can RCR not have a sponsor for Bowyer? His either in the chase or in the hunt for it every year, he's funny as heck, and he wins every once in a while.
In these economic times, it's tough to keep any sponsor for the asking price these teams want of $15 to $20 million.
Terry, the money for Carl to go to JGR must be ridiculous, because I think he's going to lose A LOT, I mean A LOT, of his fans if he does. Thoughts?
I disagree. Look, the man has to do what is best for his family. Why begrudge him that? Any of us would do the same thing.
A few races to go...can Jr make the playoffs?
I say it's 50/50.
When Kasey Kahne takes over the #5 next year won't that just shove #88 and Dale Junior down to low man on the HMS totem pole?
Not financially speaking. Jr is a big money-maker for Hendrick Motorsports. And I don't know it moved him down competitively, either.
do you work for nascar because you sure put ford down?
Wow Robert. No. 1, I couldn't care less which manufacurer wins. No. 2, neither does NASCAR.
A few minutes to go, can we last without another JR question
You ruined it Calvin.
How many more seasons will we have to endure way too many 1.5 mile tracks on the schedule? Is there any hope for the near future that NASCAR might swap some of these cookie cutters out for some shorter tracks?
Which ones do you have in mind Chris? Iowa is the only one they might consider, but it's that oversaturation thing. NASCAR wanted to build news tracks about the size of Richmond in Seattle, New York and Denver, but the economy has put all those plans on hold.
Hey Terry, Any chance that NASCAR moves one of the lost races from Nashville Speedway back to the Nashville Fairgrounds track that used to host Cup races?
I seriously doubt it. The fairgrounds can't afford the sanctioning fees.
why arent more tracks like richmond being built?
Because the economy crashed. ISC or SMI are not going to spend the money to do that right now, and cities aren't going to put up the public funding to help them.
It's a good thing the economy is down or else NASCAR wouldn't have a viable scapegoat for the sub par product they are putting out. What are they going to blame when the economy bounces back?
I disagree. I wrote today that nothing is perfect, but this has been the best NASCAR season in may years. More winners, closer finishes, better competition.
When do you think we will see Austin Dillon in the #31, what with Burtons age and lack of speed?
Burton just signed a new 3-yr. deal this season.
Terry, how much longer can we expect Jr to race and who's the most likely driver to succeed him as most popular driver?
Junior's new deal will be at least three years added on to this one, and it might be five years. That's a long way off to pick the most popular driver.
More winners because the cars are like IROC cars, basically all the same.
That's OK with me as long as the same four of five guys don't win all the time.
Who would rank as the top 5 teams in Nascar right now?
I assume you mena organizations, so it's Hendrick, Roush, Gibbs, Childress as the big four. The fifth one might be Penske.
If Dale Jr. misses the chase will the media forget him until 2012?
You know better than that Jules. Jr is still Jr and a zillion of so fans still love him.
I read an article recently the Jeff Gordon may race 5 more years. Is that true?
Yes. He wants to race as long as he's still competitive, and he looks pretty darn competitive right now.
Would Penske ever go back to a 3rd team with a guy like Brian Vickers if they could secure sponsorship?
Sure. It's all about the money. If they have the funding they would love to add a third car. Vickers wouldn't be a bad choice.
Do you think Kimi Raikkonen's flirting with NASCAR racing is over?
My take is Kimi never will be a full-time NASCAR driver.
I'm out guys. Check out NASCAR Now today. I will have some inside info of the Nashville deal and what tracks might get those races next year. Have a great week. Peace.
