It has been two weeks since we all got together. A little has happened in the NFL in that time! Gettyup!
Don't know if you've heard, but there's football again. What do you think of the Eagles? NFC favorites?
I think Philly is loaded-absolutely loaded. Fantastic free agency work by them. Rather amazing really. Along those lines, very soon, they will post my AFC Free Agent Grades. And tomorrow will be the NFC. I gave the Eagles a A+. But NFC Favs? Nope. I still think GBay gets that honor. I might even put NOrls & ATL over Philly-both of them had very strong off seasons too ya know.
Would Giants bite on a 3rd rd pick & Seattle T.E. J Carlson for Osi?
I like Osi, don't get me wrong, but not sure where he fits in SEA's D. Clemons has that Elephant position all locked up. And their other DE is a big heavy guy like Red Bryant. But...I don't think Carlson has a ton of value. Still, that seems like a fair offer for both teams considering that NYG should get about a 2nd for Osi.
Is Carlos Rogers an upgrade when compared Nate Clements?
Nah...about the same. Actually, would rather have Clements slightly. SF didn't get an A+ in my free agency grades
Has Tampa Bay allowed their o-line to stagnate enough to hold them back form taking that next step in 2011?
Perhaps. TBay also did not get an A+. They had a TON of $$$ to spend-and really didn't help themselves at all. DBs and OL are weaknesses to me. Not a Joseph or Trueblood fan. OL is vastly overrated. I do equate Freeman to Big Ben though-can make a lot happen still behind a bad OL.
Did Clabo take a home discount to stay with the Falcons? 5-25 for a Pro Bowl OT seems club generous right?
Clabo is a good player, but I don't equate him to Pro Bowl status. Not elite. You might be right though. ATL should be pretty attractive to someone like Clabo right now though.
What about Matt Roth to Green Bay? He seems like a good bookend to Clay Matthews
Doubt GB does it though. They are tight against the cap. But I have said for a while that this team is really missing a complement to Clay Jr. Roth would be great in that capacity.
What are the chances Osi landing in KC?
That one makes some sense too. Wouldn't want him dropping into coverage a lot, but he would be a great guy to put opposite Hali. And KC has $$$ to use too. I like it.
Lofa Tatupu to the Bears? That front seven would be nasty!
I don't agree. Tatupu can't run any more. Not the player he once was. Injuries are tough to comment on, and maybe he gets back to 100%. But I also don't think he was ever athletic enough to really be a OLB in Chi's scheme. Sorry to burst your bubble.
Here's the big question--does Osi actually get traded?
Oh I think so. Resigning Kiwi made that a foregone conclusion. Would be nice to get a player & a pick in return though.
Does Braylon Edward's latest "late night folly" make him a guy that teams will only sign if they get banged up in the preseason?
Good question. He sure isn't helping his stock now, is he? Minny is real big on character. Would think he would already be a Vike if it wasn't for his issues. But I do think he gets signed quick. Minny? Zona?
Would you consider Osi strictly a 4-3 DE or do you think he could play DE in a 3-4? or OLB in 3-4?
Best as a 4-3 DE, but in some schemes that don't ask OLBs to drop a ton (NEng/KC for example), I wouldn't have a problem projecting him to LB
Would the Bears be a good fit for Osi?
Their scheme is great for Osi. Wide edge rusher. But I think Izzy is prob good enough to live with as a starter. If I were Chi, I would look more toward the O Line instead D Line
Outside of QB, what do you see as the Skins biggest needs?
Pretty much the whole O-long term I mean. I have said before that rebuilding this team is a massive project. And I would have handled it pretty much like they did. Work on the D first. The D didn't need as much work. And now it looks vastly improved. The O is just a bunch of guys. Quantity over Quality. Fine. Let's see who emerges. I think Hankerson will. S Moss is solid, but won't last forever. The TEs are fine. Shanny has proven that average RBs are enough. But I still think the OL needs lot of work. But QB....oh QB
matt,i could see al davis try and get osi? the quaterback must go down hard!
I doubt it. Oak actually has a LOT of guys-who are under the radar a bit-that make up an excellent front 7.
Does M. Floyd to the Vikes make sense?
Some, but I really think his best spot is SD. He needs to go deep. Not sure how much Minny will do that with their suspect OL. But there is a big need at WR right now. Still, I think Floyd is a bit overrated. Decent player-but product of his SD enviroment
Do you see McKinnie landing anywhere? Hated the guy in Minny as his work ethic is miserable, but I am sure a team will take a stab at him.
He will land somewhere for sure. He isn't a terrible player. Could be better, but he isn't terrible.
Hey Matt, are the Lions a top 10 defense? Your call on the Over/under?
Wow. That is a good line! Would bet they are in the 9-12 range when it is all said and done. So I will take the OVER...meaning a higher number than 10.
Who are the best avalable corners? Carolina needs one
Real slim market, esp with Rogers now in SF. No one really comes to mind to be honest.
The Jets are now reportedly 6.4 mil under the cap, they need a bona fide pass rusher. Would Banta Cain be a good fit? No way Gman trade OSi to them, right?
Why wouldn't NYG trade Osi to NYJ? Just cause they are in the same city? Not in same division. As for Banta Cain...he isn't good enough. Jets need better.
With the Raiders losing Zach Miller do you see them going hard after Kevin Boss?
Losing Miller hits hard. A staple of their passing game. Boss isn't close in terms of receiving ability, but there are not many other options available at this point. And Boss is the better blocker-which is important considering the state of Oak's OL.
Who will become the highest paid RB first.....AP or CJ?
This isn't what you asked, but Peterson deserves it more
M-Dub not a fan of Sidney Rice being in Seattle. In your opinion what do you think of the move?
Well, I think it is pretty clear that they are doing everything possible to give their bad QBs (or next year's rookie QB) every tool needed to succeed. Miller, Williams and Rice: All very tall guys with huge catching radius. That is very helpful to QBs with poor accuracy...and few as in inaccurate as T Jax.
Is Braylon Edwards a fit in SF?
Would not be bad and their WRs are a nightmare. He isn't the ideal WCO WR, but he is extremely talented and if motivated, can really adjust to any system.
9-1-1! M-Dub, HELP!!! In a 12 team keeper league and have first pick. Who do you like more. Daniel Thomas (Miami), Mark Ingram (NOLA), or Ryan Williams (Arizona) Thanks in advance!!
Would go with Ingram. Great cast around him. I very much believe he will be the true #1 RB in NO. Thomas is in a good situation too-and should get a lot of touches. But I think Ingram is the better player.
You said earlier that you thought Braylon Edwards would be signed soon. Have you heard something we haven't?
Nope. But there are a few teams that need help at the position and he is the best option. Just seems like a logical progression.
Would Cotchery and 2012 4th rounder be enough for Osi? also, is Matt Roth and upgrad over Shaun Ellis at this point?
I tend to think that offer is too light. And NYG really isn't in bad shape with their WRs-even with S Smith's status. Roth and Ellis are different. Roth would be a OLB for the Jets. Ellis is a 3-4 DE. Kinda shocked no one has scooped up Ellis. He can still play. KC maybe? NEng?
Fantasy Alert! Fantasy Alert! Rank Em'.... Wayne, Fitz, V-Jax, Wallace, Maclin. If you ever write a book, I'll buy it.
Just follow me on Twitter (@WilliamsonNFL) instead! 1. Fitz...easily. 2. V-Jax 3. Wallace Torn on the last two
Matt, I think the Lions quietly have done very well in free agency. They resigned Houston at CB, plus added Eric Wright and shored up their LB position with Tulloch and Durant. All the signings were cheap and these guys are all 26 or younger.
Well said. Can't argue any of that. Pretty sure I will give DET a B for my free agent grade. I would love to see them add 1 more DB and 1 more OLineman. Not sure if they can pull that off...might be next year's job.
The Chargers re-signed several of their own guys and brougt in a couple of older vets, but didn't really make any major moves in FA. What do you see for SD this year, and where do they fit in the AFC pecking order?
Can't argue with bringing back your own-esp quality guys and esp because of the limited practice time due to the lockout this year. SD is a contender. Torn between them and KC as my NFCW winner, but leaning towards Rivers. In the AFC, I would put NEng and PGH over them. Prob Balt too. Not sure on Indy, Jets and Houston.
Are the Texans legit contenders?
Every year about this time everyone talks about how this will be Houston's year. And every year about this time I tell everyone that Houston will be 8-8. I have been pretty dead on with that. But now...I am intrigued. I think I will bite. I trust their D. Might pick them to win the division. So to answer the question: Yes.
With Haynseworth and Ochocinco will Belicheck be ordering Tylonol by the case to ease the headaches these guys cause?
If they cause too many headaches, he calls them into his office and informs them that they have been released. NEng has VERY little invested in these two-that is the beauty of the entire situation.
How much of a contributor do you see Haynesworth being this year?
Total Stud. I mean it. Pro Bowler. The Tenn version of Big Al. Yikes.
Pack still Super Bowl favorites? Not buying the hype on Philly, the NFL isnt the NBA.
I think they have to be. Philly is very much improved though. But right now, if I were in Vegas making odds, GBay would be my favorite.
Will I destroy QBs with defenses focusing on Brian opposite of me? I like the taste of QBs and I'm dieing to taste some NFL QB?
Should work out pretty well. Wash has some pass rushers now from their DL too. Bowen will do well in that regard and Cofield can push the pocket. This D overall is vastly improved.
How is anyone going to run on the Saiints with that DLine?
Vilma must be so psyched! Gonna be tough to pass on them too! Just of them rushing Jordan from the interior next to Rogers (who is an animal rushing the passer) with Smith and another DE or Wilson as edge rushers. Real good set of CBs too. LOVE the Saints now.
Can we stop with the Philly/ Miami Heat comparisons. Philly didnt' spend years clearing cap room hoping somebody would be a free agent. Philly is simply already a good team that is signing good players.
Very much agree and I never really understood those comparisons either. BTW-not a huge NBA guy here-but Miami did play in the Finals right? It wasn't like they were a .500 squad.
Wouldn't it be nice if Shanny or Someone for Skins front office made it official, it's the Luck Sweepstakes or Bust for this season...
I hear ya. But I tend to think the D will be too good now to pick first overall.
Will Franklin be able to adapt to a 4-3 DT? Guy is huge...
Yes. He will just a Pat Williams type 4-3 DT.
Better for the Broncos: Orton or Tebow?
Orton is a lot better player
But Philly is signing a bunch of 30+ players which are going to take up cap space for the next five years
They are certainly ALL IN...can't argue that. But I respect it too.
Who do you project will have the better defense in the AFC East, Fins or Jets?
Miami. Feel like this is a Top 3-5 D in 2011.
What WR would you sign if you were running the Vikes?
Now? Braylon. Would have upped the ante to keep Rice though.
give me an early title game pick for both conferences
Who better complements Sensabaugh from Elam, Pool, and Goldson?
Great question. Sensabaugh is a true SS and Dallas will want to find a centerfielder type. I actually think all three would do the trick. If I get one: Pool
Any additional moves you would like to see the Patriots make?
One more pass rusher. Roth. There has to be a great Godfather II line here that I am missing. Ashamed of myself.
Are you worried about the Steelers offensive line?
Somewhat. I do think they will bring back Flozell or Starks though. They seem high on Legursky-could be the starting RG. Colon should be a massive upgrade at RT. Still...it isn't a team strength.
Matt, No music today? Trying to regain your focus after a week off?
Just too busy. iPod sitting next to me. Never took it over the docking station. Music would actually help my focus/flow.
Please tell me Vernon Gholston won't sniff the field.
I am sure he won't. But I do commend that signing and the one of Okoye. I am a big fan of giving talented players/high draft picks a 2nd chance-at minimal risk. And Marinelli is a phenomenal DL coach.
Orton is off the table now, any options for the Dolphins at QB? Do you think Henne can improve with Dan Henning out of the picture?
I do think Henne can improve. Was much better one year ago than he is today. And now, his supporting cast is much improved. I also like Moore....
Sean Lee has been impressive thus far in Cowboys camp. Can he be a top ten starter at WILB?
Yep. Big fan of Lee's, which is why I thought the drafting of Carter was curious. Too similar skill sets. That isn't a knock on Carter.
Your blog sucked when Sando was away, and thats why your just a scout!
I didn't have a blog while Sando was away. Do a fill-in article here and there for every divisional blog. But not a reporter. But thanks so very much for the kind words. XOXOXOX
Is Michael Bush a starting RB in this league?
Borderline. In reality, there are probably only 10 true starting RBs...and in that case, no. Would I be okay with Bush as my #1 though? Probably-esp if I were strong in all other areas.
How about Donte Whitner for Dallas or is he too similar to Sensabaugh?
Too much like Sensabaugh. I like those other options better. However, Whitner outplayed all those guys mentioned last year.
Bears falling back to earth this year? I see them as a sub .500 team.
Yeah, I won't be picking them to go to the playoffs. Look like a .500ish team to me. Passing game could be improved-another year with Martz. But their OL is frightening.
What is your opinion of the Giants OL? Do you see them making any more moves in FA?
Outside of Snee and McKenzie, it worries me. Not real deep. Not real sure where everyone fits. Will lack continuity right from the start. I don't think it falls off a cliff, but it does worry me.
how about donte whitner to the steelers in case polamalu gets injured?
Whitner is from Cleveland, which is only 2 hours from PGH. Close to home-he was a Glenville TarBlooder by the way. Anyhoo, I see where you are coming from, but Whitner is def starting material in this league. Not sure who really needs a SS off the top of my head though. Where is the fit for him?
But will the Bears' O-line be LESS frightening than last year's group?
Has to be. They really haven't done much to improve it though. Carimi needs to play well-and he should in time. But counting on rooks (Esp this yr) is tough.
How about Donte Whitner to the Vikings???
Now that isn't a bad call. Has the range to play Cover 2 as well. Not just a box player. Jax?
Folks, I gotta run. Good to see the chat numbers improving. Take care all. Drop me a line on Twitter. Will answer whatever you need.
