Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (2:01 PM)

So how many of you are surprised that Carl Edwards stayed at Roush Fenway? Lots to talk about so we'll jump right to it.

Josh (Charlotte)

Hi David, are you hearing that Scotty Speed might be going to RCR to drive the #33 in 2012?

David Newton
  (2:02 PM)

Not at all. Richard Childress told me last weekend he hopes to have Clint signed in two weeks.

casper (dc)

Howdy David..I go to RIR and Martinsivlle each year to see the races and love them. I've been to a few others but nothing tops those two for me. However, I havent been to Bristol yet. Seeing how expensive those tickets are, should I go to the fall races at Martinsville AND Richmond, or pony up for the Bristol race coming up? Thanks!

David Newton
  (2:02 PM)

I'd go with Martinsville and Richmond. I like the racing at both of those places better than Bristol these days, although Bristol remains a special place.

Brad (Crossville, TN)

David, after Ford has joined in, where do you feel like Carl is headed now?

David Newton
  (2:03 PM)

Ford is going to make him the face of the sport. Put him on more commercials than ever. Wouldn't be surprised to see him on American Idol. Heard he can sing.

Ron (OH)

Why does the media mention the battle for the points lead when that means absolutely nothing?

David Newton
  (2:05 PM)

Having technical difficulty. STay with me.

Ron (OH)

Are we going to finally going to see some boys have at it racing the next 6 weeks because many are desperate to make the chase?

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

I was Curious are Fain Skinner who ran the Kroger 200 at Lucus Oil Raceway & Sprint Cup Series Driver Mike Skinner Related?

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

Sorry. As you can see there were some glitches in the system. Two question posted. First for Ron, Not sure we'll see boys have at it as much as we'll see boys save fuel. That seems to be the best way to win races lately. Plus you need to be consistent to stay in the top 20, so drivers won't take too many chances. But if it comes to that last lap at Richmond with a berth on the spot, watch out. As for the Skinners, not sure. Would have to think so.

David Newton

michael (dallas)

Do you take your picks serious or are you just a homer for jr? He might had led a few laps but no way he's winning.I remember when senior passed away,I was looking for souvenirs at a store.I ran into a woman, she was Jeff Gordon fan she asked if i was going to rout for Jr.,I said no way.To make long story short I didn't watch Nascar for about 4 months.Someone told me about the guy who replaced Earnhardt, same kind of personality,I was hooked again.Go Kevin

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

I was just having fun with my pick of Earnhardt at Indy, although it wouldn't have surprised me to see him win on fuel mileage. Glad you like Kevin. Fun guy to watch.

kevin (Utah)

Does Harvick have enough to win cup?

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

He was pretty darn close a year ago. He's won three races this year. i'll say yes.

Tom (AZ)

Hi Newt, yesterday on ESPN NASCAR Now, Nashville CEO McGlynn partially blamed the lack of Sprint Cup stars racing in the Nationwide Series as the reason for not renewing their agreement with NASCAR. Will the people who have called for Kyle, Edwards etc. to race exclusively in cup now be happy?

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

They raced a lot in the Nationwide races there as well. That has nothing to do with it. Bottom line, the sanctioning fee is so high that tracks need to have a Cup draw to make the economics work.

christ s (reedsville pa)

hello david newton i enjoy your chat i wish u would do it 2 days a week who do u have for your top 5 this weekend an how do u c my 2 drivers gordon an dinger doing thanks

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

I'd do it three or four if they let me, so thanks. As for top 5, I like Gordon, Johnson, Hamlin, Harvick and Junior for the person who asked if I take my picks serious.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What do you think of getting in & out of Pocono Raceway?

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

Pretty easy if you know the secret back way.

Don Juan (TX)

Really enjoyed the race at IMS, Any chance that the trucks can have a race there also? What about possibly a second Cup race in the spring?

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

It's going to be bad enough having Nationwide at IMS, so no, I don't see Trucks or a second Cup race there.

Brad (Crossville, TN)

With Carl deciding to stay with Roush after this ordeal, how many fans do you think he has upset by making it look like he was just in it for the money and not dedicated to Ford and Roush?

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

I believe he would have upset more fans had he left. You can't blame him for looking around and making the best choice.

Matthew (Columbia, NJ)

David which 16 car will show up this weekend? The top 10 possibly race winning car or the car that finishes 15th-25th?

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

I believe he would have upset more fans had he left. You can't blame him for looking around and making the best choice.

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

Hard to tell these days. That would have to rank among my top four or five biggest disappointments of the season.

Christian (Richmond, VA)

With Edwards staying at R-Fenway, who is the likely next target for Gibbs Racing? Whose contract ends after the 2012 season?

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

Nobody of Edwards quality will be there in 2012. Dale Jr.'s deal will be up at Hendrick, but he's close to re-signing a long-term deal.

Ricky (North Carolina)

Will today's announcement of Carl staying with Roush send him on a big role and carry him to a title?

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

Hard to say. I still like Kyle Busch or Jimmie Johnson to win it.

Chris (Crestview, FL)

I know Edwards is the huge story of the day, but something that might be getting overlooked is that New Jersey is in negotiations to bring a F1 race to the streets of Weehawken as soon as 2013. Given that Road America is coming to Texas in a few years too should NASCAR be getting worried about F1 potentially taking away some of its potential track customers?

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

They'll always keep an open eye, but can't imagine there would be any great concern. NASCAR still has the big TV contract and you need that to be big in this country.

scottie philadelphia pa [via mobile]

Now with edwards signed at RFR...where does that leave stenhouse jr and or bayne .......i dont see any rides at RFR opening anytime soon.....

David Newton
  (2:19 PM)

Bayne likely will stay in the 21 with the Wood Brothers. I could see Stenhouse sharing a ride in Cup at RPM, perhaps with a Mark Martin.

Robbie (Charleston)

With the Carl Edwards deal now done. Any idea of the sponsor?

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

Aflac will be back but I'm not sure how big. Scott's is still there. He wouldn't have re-signed without guarantees there.

Chris (Crestview, FL)

Do you think Brad Keslowski will be able to ?gut it out? and race the whole Pocono race on Sunday? Or will Penske have a back up driver ready? Now that they are shifting there he will be using both feet and those pics of the injuries were pretty brutal.

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

Knowing Brad he'll try to gut it out, but that ankle looked bad. If BK believes another driver will help give him the best finish I believe he'll go a few laps and step aside.

hannibal mo [via mobile]

will jr make the chase

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

Two weeks ago I would have said heck yes. Now I'll say I think so. He's in a tough spot now. If he can stay focused and pull off a string of top-10s he'll make it no problem. That may be a big if.

Chris (Crestview, FL)

Can Logano breathe a sigh of relief now or should he still be worried about his job at JGR? Is there a big name free agent next year in silly season 2012 that might replace him?

David Newton
  (2:23 PM)

I don't believe Joey ever was going to be kicked to the street. JGR has invested too much in him. Having said that, if he doesn't turn it around by next year the organization and sponsor might have little choice but to look elsewhere.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

How many Sprint Cup Series Races do you think that Danica Patrick will race in 2012?

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

Have been told seven to 10, probably seven to keep her rookie status for 2013.

Michael (Flo Mo)

How will Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth react to Edwards' deal? Neither have gotten along with him very well and both are elite drivers. Is there any chance this causes problems at Roush?

David Newton
  (2:25 PM)

Fewer problems at Roush than Carl might have faced at JGR with his new teammates. At least Biffle and Kenseth know Carl well and have found ways to live together in the past. I don't see that changing.

scottie philadelphia pa [via mobile]

Now with edwards signd at RFR where does that leave bayne and stenhouse.....dont see any rides opening up at RFR anytime soon

David Newton
  (2:25 PM)

Think I answered that below, so check it out.

Tim (El Cajon, CA (JJ COUNTRY))

WOW! Who really thought that Carl would sign with RFR! I think 99% of the people had him going with JGR!! Congrats to Cuz'in Carl!!

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

I know a lot of media had him gone.

Benjamin Spencer (Winston-Salem NC)

I have a few questions first does this look like a good fansty team for this weekend 2 1 88 24 18 second now that nashivlle is off for nationwide and it is likely that montreal is off is it possible orp could race still and is it possible dega could get a second race an is it possible that their could only be 33 or 32 races on the schedule thanks Mr.Newton

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

Lots to digest there. Fantasy team ok, not great. Not a big fan of McMurray here, and Kyle doesn't love it. It wouldn't surrpise me to see ORP, or Lucas Oil Raceway as it now is known, pick up a NW and Truck race. Dega already has two race weekends, so not sure what you're asking unless you are referring to a second NW race there. A shorter season always is welcome.

eric syracuse ny [via mobile]

hey dave can you bench press as much as carl edwards

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

Uh, no.

mike (az)

Let me start by saying Edwards decision is good for the Ford brand, and good for the future of Roush. He seems to be a mentor for roush's development guys, and that can only help the team after the old guard (Matt and Greg) head off into the sunset. However, he doesnt seem that popular with his current teammates, and I have to imagine this hostage situation and demand for money hasn't helped, but thats another story. What I really want to know is, why when he was rumored to go to Gibbs, we the fans heard over and over that it was all about money and we are idiots for questioning what's best for him and his family. Now that he resigned with Roush, its "he stayed because it gives him the best opportunity and he's loyal and a good guy again, blah, blah, blah. I'm obviously not referencing your article in particular, but this seems to be the general consensus fed to us. truth is, Ford threw a whole bunch of money at him and gave him the bigger paycheck. He was looking for money and that doesnt change just because he stayed at Roush. It is what it is right?

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

I'm not so sure Ford offered as much money as they offered him the opportunity to expand his brand and image in commercials and other ways. Carl has said from the beginning it's not about the money. You'll have to take that for what it's worth.

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

Adam C (Vermont)

Newton, such harsh words for JGR in your recent article, you make it seem like RFR is twice the organization. Then, you alter your numbers to make it seem that way. You fail to mention Tony Stewart's two champions (2002 & 2005) but have to talk about RFR's in 03

David Newton
  (2:31 PM)

Read closer. I said in the article I'm not saying JGR isn't a great organization or that there aren't issues at RFR. Just was saying the grass isn't always greener. I think both organizations are in the top four in the sport.

Tyler (Minnesota )

Who will win more championships with their organizations. Carl with Roush? or Kyle with JGR?

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

Kyle, but just my opinion.

dz (nowhere, nm)

david,do you believe alot of these young guys are winning because the driver/cc/teams are not using old information? it just blows me away to think a new team or driver is able to beat a season team. any thoughts?

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

A lot of these young guys are winning because there teams are taking more chances with tires and fuel than ever before because they can and the reward is greater than the risk.

dz (nowhere, nm)

david,i have asked you for advice in regards to attentding the bristol race. one question i have is what airport do fans use. does it matter which of the 2 nearby airports? will renting a car be difficult? insn't bristol out in the sticks? thanks dav.

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

I'd fly into Asheville, N.C.. Beautiful city with great restaurants if you have a chance to hang out there too.

erin (manasquan, nj)

Maybe the reason no driver wants to drive for JGR is that they don't want to be teammates with Hamlin, Busch and Logano. What do you think?

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

I don't think that is it at all, but I do believe it was a consideration for Carl because of his past with at least one of those drivers.

westfield mass [via mobile]

Will ryan newman make the chase?

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

He should. One win and where he is, i belive eighth, in points should be enough barring a major collapse.

Jerame (Cali)

I hope i get the pole today!!! Thanks dave for chatting with us, who are your top five this weekend? And will junior make the chase?

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

You are starting well back in the field, but perhaps you can make up ground based on talent. Top five Gordon, Johnson, Hamlin, Edwards and Junior for fun. As for making the Chase, it'll be close.

Dave (Boston)

I've got a few questions about 33. Did he lose leverage today, or was his deal already done? With sponsorship being an issue, will he be in a more manly car than the Cheerio-mobile in 2012? And, how much do you think his contract situation has affected his performance of late?

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

I don't think Bowyer would have ended up at Roush regardless. Richard Childress says he's committed to him and Bowyer says he's committed to RC. Bowyer's best bet to leave ended when Red Bull announced it was folding. He was pretty close on a deal there.

Joe (Scottsdale, AZ)

Hi Newt, great story, Staying at Home" today. Do you think ultimately , Rowdy told Coach to withdraw the offer to Edwards because Kyle didn't think Edwards would work well at JGR?

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

Don't be silly, but thanks for reading and enjoy the day at home.

Nelly (San Antonio)

Do you know Kyle Busch as well as he indicated on his twitter feed or was Rowdy being sarcastic?

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

Think Kyle was being very sarcastic. I actually like Kyle and have no problems with him. Like that he can be sarcastic with me on twitter.

James (NC)

Hi Newt, are you happy to know that Kyle Busch reads your stories or do you wish he had skipped today? Sounds like Kyle doesn't agree with your assessment about him not welcoming Edwards at JGR?

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

Pretty sure somebody showed him the line that he tweeted about. My point was not a slam at Kyle. It was simply that sometimes personalities don't mesh. I don't happen to think his and Edwards would have. It's not a slam on either one. Like I said on twitter, I like wine and I like beer, just not poured in the same glass together.

Ryan (So Cal)

How much longer does home Depot stay with JGR? Office Depot is in their last contact year with SHR. Just saying....

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

Home Depot has to be impatient at this point with that other home improvement store winning all the title. I expect it to play a lesser role in 2012, but still be the primary.

Chris (CT)

I'm sure there are more people than you think that are more loyal to teams than they are with drivers. I think there would have been a lot less Edwards fans and a lot more Kenseth fans next year if he had switched. Thank goodness he didn't!!!!

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

Agreed.

Daniel (Charlotte nc)

Hi David. Who do you have winning this weekend at Pocono? and your top 5?

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

Same as I said a few other times below. Check it out.

Tracy (CT)

Newt, I am really sad. I was hoping Carl would sign with JGR so I could have all the drivers I don't like on one team! With that said, where does this leave Bayne and Stenhouse?

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

Funny. What is sad is that Nashville is leaving the Nationwide schedle. AS for Bayne and Stenhouse, Bayne in the No. 21 on a part-time schedule again. Stenhouse NW andpossibly split a Cup ride.

Marcus (SC)

Interesting read today, the way you were talking about JGR it seems as though they would be only the sixth or seventh best team in the Cup garage. Not one that wins multiple races and is very competitive every year.

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

Not at all. Just was making the point that the grass isn't always greener somewhere else.

Tracy (CT)

Sadler got robbed last weekend. Why can't NASCAR just rearange the first say 5 rows and not the whole field if someone in the top ten drops out??

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

Wow, a Sadler question. Thanks. I wouldn't say robbed. The rules are what they are. And it appeared to me he spun out at the end without any help.

Ben (Wildwood Park, GA)

Gee Newt, r u concerned that you might not be on the Mr. & Mrs. Kyle Busch Christmas Card list this year?

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

I expect the same card I got from them last year. And did I mention I really like Samantha's shoes?

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

I expect the same card I got from them last year. And did I mention I really like Samantha's shoes?

Bryan (Iowa) [via mobile]

I've heard several times that the 17 would've had a better chance to win the championship had Carl decided to go to JGR. Is this true? Really how much of a difference would that have made?

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

Not if you believe what the Roush people were saying, that they would do everything they could to help the 99 win the title. Personally, I think Matt would have gotten a few breaks here and there to help out. And I believe he can still win the title regardless of Carl staying.

Ben (Wildwood Park, GA)

Now that Jack and Coach have resolved the Edwards issue what does RFR do about sponsorship for Kenseth and do you think UPS reups?

David Newton
  (2:48 PM)

I do believe UPS re-ups, just not sure for how many races and with what Roush driver. Jack would like to keep the sponsor on the 6, but maybe UPS would rather have a proven driver like Kenseth. Nothing on Kenseth, by the way.

Jeff (Roseville, MI)

Newt, thanks for the chats, I love reading them every week. Do you think it is time to add Jeff Gordon to the names of serious title contenders with Johnson, Edwards, Harvick and Busch? That team really seems to be rolling right now. What do you think his chances are? Thanks

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

I definitely believe Gordon can win it all. In fact, he's the hottest driver on the circuit right now. Easily could have won the last two races. Beware of the now 40-year-old. He's hungry.

Jules (NJ)

Hi David, do you expect General Mills to resign with Boyer or will RCR have to go back to 3 cars and send Clint to Nationwide like Penske did last year when Mobil left Sam Hornish high and dry?

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

Not sure about General Mills. I believe they'll be in the sport, but not sure about what level. Can't see Clint going to Nationwide and don't see RCR going to three cars. Pretty sure they have a plan that will work.

Jules (NJ)

Do you expect Sam Hornish to be driving the Blue Deuce at Pocono and Watkins Glen since both tracks require shifting and Sam has been successful at both tracks?

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

Still checking on that in case Brad K can only go a few laps. If you see a newser later you'll know I found out.

Stan (NY)

Hi David, with Kyle Busch earning a 2nd and 3rd in his last 3 Pocono races do you expect Rowdy to break through Sunday and win, especially since Kyle and Dave can use Denny's set ups?

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

Never count Kyle out, and I believe he sai dafter the last Pocono race that he'd found something from one of Denny's setups that helped.

Marge (Dublin, Ohio)

Hi David, I'm a Jr. fan but I really belive he will fall out of the top 10 either at Pocono or for sure at Watkins Glen, so I'm wondering if Jr. and Stevie will start working on 2012 or maybe try to help Jimmie or Jeff in the chase?

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

They won't give up on this season until they are out of contention. Could do down to Richmond where a win gets him in.

Donna (Vero Beach, FL)

David, why don't the drivers like Mikey and Mark Martin have farewell tours like DW and other did back in the day?

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

I am thankful they don't. What other sport do they do that?

Andy (Reading, PA)

With Paul Menard winning for RCR at Indy are winless Burton and Boyer on the hot seat, especially since General Mills hasn't resigned and when do you think we will see Austin Dillon in either the #31 or the #33?

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

I am thankful they don't. What other sport do they do that?

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

Burton signed a new deal earlier this year and RCR is trying to sign Bowyer. Don't think Dillon is ready for a year or two. Richard doesn't want to put that kind of pressure on him.

Craig (Tenn)

David, are you gonna unfollow Kyle Busch on twitter after his tweet today regarding your story?

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

Love mixing it up with Kyle. Invited him to this chat.

Andy (Michigan)

Was this flirtation with JGR just a trick to get more cash out of Roush and Ford?

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

Nope. Just checking all options.

Christine (Jasper,In)

I know you might not respond to this, but why do you keep saying you are picking Jr. to win "just for fun". If I was a driver, I would consider that a blow to me. I do have other drivers I like also, but I feel like people don't take him seriously at all anymore.

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

Actually, I said I was picking him for fun at Indy, where he doesn't have a good track record. I've picked him for real a lot this season. I still believe he'll win.

Matt (Denver)

Terry Blount wrote yesterday that this in NASCAR's best season in ages. Do you agree? What do you think was the best season or era for NASCAR?

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

If you like a lot of fuel mileage races and the great finishes we've had, yes.

Drew (Bloomington, Ind.)

I don't think Danica Patrick will be a championship contender in Sprint Cup.

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

Well there's going out on a limb.

Bryce (Omaha)

Whose the most overrated driver in Nascar..Clint Bowyer or Martin Truex..lets face it, their good drivers, but will never be great drivers..

David Newton
  (3:00 PM)

Wouldn't say either is overrated. Bowyer has made the Chase more and won more races. You never know what Truex might have done in the same equipment. There are far more drivers out there I would classify as overrated.

David Newton
  (3:01 PM)

Going a few minutes of overtime to make up for the technical glitch that slowed me down.

Chris (Crestview, FL)

How much longer do we have to wait until we can pretty much say Frye won't be able to find investors for next season and Team Red Bull will be closing its doors? Any chance Red Bull sticks around as a sponsor for some other team next year anyway?

David Newton
  (3:01 PM)

Going a few minutes of overtime to make up for the technical glitch that slowed me down.

David Newton
  (3:02 PM)

I'm told there will be investors, just at what level is the question. Red Bull could be a one-car team like Front Row Motorsports or a two-car operation like it is. The 45-day period Frye mentioned isn't up until after this weekend, and I believe he's asked for an extension. Kidding on the last.

Phil (Richmond, Va.)

If BK can't go the distance at Pocono, who might step in for him? (Please say Sadler...)

David Newton
  (3:03 PM)

Just exchanged messages with Brad and he says he's all in this week.

Michael (mercer, pa)

How much truth is there to the "report" of Danica coming to NASCAR and how well do you think she will do if and when she makes the full-time switch?

David Newton
  (3:04 PM)

That is old news. We've been saying she is coming to NASCAR for three months. She'll drive full NW season for JR Motorsports and seven or so races for Stewart-Haas, although I'm told the Cup side is more difficult to put together.

Bob T. (Winston-Salem, NC)

You still like Sadler for the NW title? Sorenson has quietly been racking up the top tens, and he doesn't have to drive the #30 car any more for the rest of the season.

David Newton
  (3:05 PM)

I do, but that late spinout at IMS without any help concerns me for obvious reasons. Can't give away points like that.

Jimmy (STL)

Without a win this year, does JPM have a full time ride for 2012?

David Newton
  (3:05 PM)

Ganassi is in the process of working an extension. He will have a ride.

David Newton
  (3:06 PM)

That's it for me folks. Have a good rest of the week. As usual, follow up with questions that went unanswered on Twitter at @Dnewtonespn. Outta here.
