Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to this week's special Thursday chat. It's a slow boxing weekend, but there are still plenty of news stories and blogs posted plus updated rankings and the updated schedule. Pretty much all we have this weekend is a solid FNF card with Coleman vs. Paris. But we also have news of Kelly Pavlik pulling out of his fight and next week's bantamweight tournament final and lots of fall fights on the horizon, so let's get to it.

Joseph (Texas)

Dan, please give us long term repercussions of this decision by Pavlik. Will he be deemed too much of a losse cannon for ANYONE to sign him, should Top Rank drop him, as I expect them to?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Kelly made a poor decision. Not because he didn't want to fight but because he asked for the fight, participated in the promotion (like a conference call with media, for example) and was acting like he was fighting. So to pull out the week of the fight is wholly unprofessional. If he didn't know his purse, that's his fault. He needs to get on his managers and get them doing their job. I think he has hurt himself badly because he has again proven untrustworthy to show up, regardless of the reason.

Roy (Reno)

Dan, this Thursday chat is really going to mess up my Friday. What am I going to do, work all morning?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

I don't know. Maybe work?

@WillyBeamon26 (Cumberland, RI)

DTM, I'm pumped for the chat today because the boss is out of the office and i dont have to Alt-Tab every minute!

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Sweet.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

Buy or sell..............Kid Chocolate will be fighting Sergio Martinez sometime in 2012.

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

I think it's possible, but would not make him a favorite to get the fight.

Jaff (NYC)

Dan- not sure why Oscar is on your case - especially after all his Tweets about being positive etc. But can you clarify what the deal is with his claim about your best friend working presumably for Arum?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

I've been friends with Top Rank matchmaker Brad Goodman for almost 20 years, long before either of us worked in our present jobs and that is something Oscar and everyone in the business has known for more than a decade. Everybody in any business has relationships and friendships. It certainly has never prevented me from being critical of Top Rank when necessary. Do I need to remind anyone about how I savaged Pacquiao-Mosley? I don't think so. In any event, Oscar is just trying to change the subject on his own company's pathetic support of the wretched WBC. He never seemed to have an issue on the many, many times I have written positively about the good things Golden Boy has done. As always, I keep it real and Oscar does not like being challenged on his promise to do things differently in boxing and then selling out and becoming a huge part of the problem. That's on him, not me.

Chris (KC)

Why is Top Rank taking so long to choose between HBO PPV or Showtime PPV for the Pacman's November fight? Any idea on who the front runner is?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

They are weighing two proposals that they say are excellent and are having them analyzed by outside consultants to help them determine with is the best. The decision should be announced by the end of this week, from what Top Rank tells me. I think both companies came with strong proposals and Top Rank is having a hard time determining which it thinks is best.

@WillyBeamon26 (Cumberland, RI)

Dan, you think the Mares - Agbecko winner persues a fight with Nonito? I think both those guys are very talented, but Nonito is in a league of his own.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

That's the fight many of us would like to see but I think it's unlikely. Donaire figures to fight in October, which could be too close to next week's fight, especially if it's a tough fight like we expect. Also, HBO has an option on Donaire's next fight, Showtime has one from what I am told on the winner of the tournament. So unless one party walks away from its option it could be very tough. If I had to guess, I would say Donaire will not be fighting the tournament winner in his next fight.

Aaron (MI)

How much is Pavlik's manager Cameron Dunkin to blame for this issue? First he gets Bradley to pass on Khan (getting Bradley sued by Shaw) and now he tells Pavlik his purse a week before the fight. Surely Pavlik made his decison while upset.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Well he is the manager, so he weilds a lot of power in these decisions. So, of course, he is directly involved in what happens.

Jordan (Matsue)

He also seems to ignore when you ravaged the WBC and Top Rank for Martinez getting stipped so Chavez can get a title shot.

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

That too. There are a million examples, but Oscar doesn't really care about them. He only looks at me being critical of this specific situation. Nothing I can do about it, but keep telling the truth. If I wanted to get nasty with him on Twitter, believe me, I could have. I didn't go there.

Mike (Miami)

Any chance on Yoan Pablo Hernandez fighting in the USA ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Seems unlikely. He is signed with Sauerland in Germany and that is where most of the notable cruiserweight fights take place these days, so I would not expect that at all.

Bobby (Louisville)

Any updates on Nov. 12 Pacquaio undercard? I've heard possibily Gamboa, Mike Jones, Cintron, a bunch of others. Gamboa would be especially nice

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Nothing solid. Right now that is all on hold until Top Rank decides which network will do the fight. Once that is done, they'll figure out the undercard. There is a good possibility that Brandon Rios will be on it. Jones likely will be either on the Pacquiao undercard or Cotto-Margarito undercard. Gamboa fights Sept. 10 and then COULD be back under Cotto-Margarito. Cintron has almost no chance to be on either plus he fights next week.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Have to wish Alex "Yanksalex" Dombroff good luck. Today's his last day as Lou DiBella's assistant as he heads off to law school. Big shoes to fill. Few others on this planet are capable of managing DiBella as he is.

Roy (Reno)

Dan, I have to admit it took me a long time to warm up to you. I thought you were biased, but after following your work for a few years, you remained consistent to principles and apply them to everyone equally, fighters, promoters, etc. I respect that and it won me over!

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Thanks. I guess when you have a lot of promoters ticked off at you it just means you're doing your job.

Mark (Wilson)

What do you think about the upcoming Paul McCloskey Vs Prescott fight. Could be an interesting battle.

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

I don't view it as a must-see sort of fight, but it's a solid matchup and will give the winner a big boost for sure, especially in an effort to get a rematch with Khan, even if that seems unlikely.

Ty (Portland, OR)

Any news on Pascal vs Cloud?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Nothing specific, although Yvon Michel, who promotes Pascal, told me this week that he is talking to Don King (Cloud's promoter) about a possible fight between them in December. But nothing solid on either guy right now.

Tomer (New York, NY)

Has Wlad given any hints as to whom he's pursuing for a fall fight outside of mentioning Fury?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Nothing specific yet.

Doc (NB, Mass)

maybe I'm biased because he's from around the way but when you take it for what it's worth, Chavez Jr. vs Manfredo Jr. should be a good scrap

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

I happen to agree. For action, it's probably a fun fight.

Big M (Atlanta, GA)

..And how much was Pavlik offered for the Bute fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Guarantee of $1.35 million plus an additional $25,000 for training expenses. That 1.35 million was a minumum no matter how the promotion did. The deal Top Rank and InterBox made was 60-40 in favor of Bute (which is reasonable). So the TR-Pavlik side would have gotten 40 percent of the of the revenue. Of that 40 percent, the deal TR made with Pavlik was 82-18 in favor of Pavlik. In other words, Pavlik would get 82 percent of the 40 percent Top Rank would get out of the fight. He probably would have made much more than $1.35 million when you consider the various streams of revenue in the fight -- Showtime money (at least $2 million), Canadian PPV money (maybe $600,000 or more), the gate (probably at least $2 million), foreign TV, sponsors, etc...

jt$ (DC)

Do the promoters control who gets press credentials at a fight? Can the blacklist journalists from getting credentials to cover their fights? Obviously that wouldn't happen with you given your high profile position but I'm curious

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Yes, the promoter and venue control the credentials list, but when there are issues that arise if a qualified, legitimate professional is barred or they try to bar that person, usually the BWAA gets involved and things get worked out. To the credit of most promoters, they don't bar any legitimate media that is legitimately covering an event.

@WillyBeamon26 (Cumberland, RI)

Tarver and USS Cunningham...... Sign me up!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

As I wrote in my blog the other day, it's a fight I would be interested in. Easily the most significant American cruiserweight fight that could be made.

Darin (MD)

Hey Dan, any idea when the Ward-Froch tix might possibly go on sale?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Have not heard the specifics yet.

James (Windsor)

Dan, which decision do you consider to be worse Shumenov vs Campillo or Wiliams vs Lara?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

They were both awful.

Fred (Cleveland)

I can't believe InterBox offered $3M to Kessler. Unless he would have been allowed to keep all the Danish TV money, but event then $3M seen a little high.

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

They didn't. That $3 million figure being offered to Kessler is simply not accurate. Not even close.

Roman (ATL)

Dan...what's next for David Lemieux?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

No specific date, but his promoter, Yvon Michel, told me this week that David is training and would fight this fall.

Blake (Portland, OR)

Dan, what's the most upset a promoter/manager has been with you for something you have said or written about them?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Too many to name.

Derek (Chicago)

Is it bad the most interesting all American fight that can be made right now is DTM vs. Oscar De La Hoya?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

LOL!

Joe (Western Mass)

Who do you think Khan is going to fight in December?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

If he actually fights in December -- and I am not convinced there is money in the HBO budget to do it and it would be suicide to go on PPV -- I am not sure of who he would face. I think a very strong candidate would be the Maidana-Guerrero winner, especially if it's Guerrero. Maybe the Morales-Matthysse winner. And maybe, just maybe, Bradley would come back to the table and fight him in early 2012.

Matt (Cols)

Dan, do you believe Kelly is just using these "business" excuses to cover the other issues he is dealing with right now?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

I have no way of knowing that. I have no idea.

Ignacio Ortiz (Oxnard Ca)

I heard Anselmo Moreno has accepted a fight against Eric Morel on October 15th? Any truth to this or will his next opponent be someone else?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Moreno just signed with Golden Boy and that match would not surprise me at all if was to open the Hopkins-Dawson PPV. One thing though -- what a horrible style match. Prepare to catch some zzzzzzz's during that one. I'm having flashbacks to Yuri Foreman-Daniel Santos fight thoughts.

Aaron (Denver)

Dan, thoughts on Morales vs Mathysse?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Excellent matchup that should be an action fight. Horrific that it's for a title that was stolen from Bradley.

Matthew (NY)

I've noticed that Khan has expressed interest in fighting Morales if he wins, but has not mentioned Matthysse. What's up with that?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Probably because Matthysse was just put into the fight in the last couple of days after Golden Boy could no longer shove Barrios down our throats because he had his own issues in Argentina.

Ted (New Hampshire)

Any word on the Mike Jones vs Selcuk Aydin rumor?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Unlikely to happen at this point. Aydin was ordered to face Jo Jo Dan in a rematch.

Aaron (Hartford)

Can we officially now say that Pavlik is an honorary member of the Winky Wrght school of Business ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Welcome aboard, Kelly!

Jeffery (Ohio)

Dan, do you think Pavlik is overestimating his own relevance/drawing power in the boxing landscape?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Yes, especially since I was told ticket sales in Youngstown for Saturday's no-canceled fight lagged badly. Top Rank would definitely lose money on that show, but hoped to make it up with the Bute fight. Even with the show off Saturday, I am told Top Rank will lose about $50,000 in expenses already put out for such things as travel, media buys, conference call, deposit on the buidling, etc... One good thing though -- even though Cunningham won't get his $20,000 purse, Top Rank told me they would at least give him something for his trouble, probably something like 5 grand because it's the right thing to do.

victor (north jersey)

when can we expect macklin martinez? sometime next year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

I think it's possible. St. Paddy's Day weekend 2012 would be the target.

Darren (MI)

DAn - Whats the situation with Dzinzruk suing HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

First off, there is no lawsuit, at least not yet. His promoters contend that HBO is under an obligation to bring him back this year under the terms of his deal with the network for the March fight against Martinez. HBO, obviously, is in major budget problems for the rest of the year and does not have room for him. Now I don't know if the obligation was on paper or simply a verbal assurance, but either way HBO NEVER EVER EVER should have promised Dzinziruk anything other than the fight with Martinez. His side got crazy sick money -- $850,000 -- for the fight, WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY more than he had ever gotten for a fight and a shot at the middleweight title on American TV. There was no reason to give a comeback fight to a guy who means nothing in the US. Sure, you can say, hey, if it's a good fight or if he wins, we can certainly discuss it. That is the right thing to do. But to promise? Absurd. And now he's coming off a knockout loss where he was dropped five times, has zero fan base in the US and now they are supposedly on the hook for probaby good six figures to bring him back? ABSOLUTE WASTE OF RESOURCES. Terrible decisions like this are why fights like Hopkins-Dawson wind up on PPV.

Power Pellets (Las Vegas)

To be honest Dan I think you have gone pretty easy on GB before this, I mean they say how they didn't want to be shady like other promoters but then they are throwing bags of cash around and telling people it's ok to break valid contracts. You could have called them out for way more stuff than you did.

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Read my archives. I certainly had a lot to say about their signing Pacquiao with a bag of cash under the cover night.

Don (Miami)

If Marquez gets by Nishioka do you possibly see him fighting Donaire at 122?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Certainly the winner of Nishioka-Marquez would be on the radar when Donaire goes to 122.

Jim (Akron, OH)

Not that interested in seeing Martinez fight Barker or Macklin. Lack of legit contenders at 160

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

I would be interested in seeing him against Macklin after the way Macklin beat the hell out of Sturm and got robbed.

Lennox Lewis (UK)

Absolutely?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Definitely.

Juan (Sherman Oaks)

On the whole Bute/Pavlik/Kessler 3.5 million deal. I know you said that there was no way kessler was getting 3.5 mil. But Does it not make sense that since Kessler has another entire region that TV would pay for, that his total conpensation for the fight would be MUCH higher than Pavlik- was that not explained to Pavlik.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Keep in mind that a Bute-Kessler fight would have to go on at like 3 or 4 am in Denmark. The network there would not pay nearly as much for the live fight at that time than in prime time, so that would hamper Kessler's earning big time. And that, I am told, was one of the reasons Sauerland Event, his promoter, balked at the fight. They need the fight in the Euro time zone to max out the money.

Juan (Sherman Oaks)

I read in the some of the spanish newspapers in Los Angeles that there are rumblings of Saul Alvarez's ego growing by leaps and bounds and that its getting to be an issue. That he refused to appear on the Money/Ortiz card as just a undercard fight and Golden Boy had to appease his ego with the split site card. Have those rumors reached your ears?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

I have the exact same thing.

jt$ (DC)

Is mitchell mollo going to be televised? I know hbo had a problem with Mollo but come on, if they want to televise heavyweights you have to take what you can get, sorry he's no Ray Austin.

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

I have been asking Golden Boy and HBO for weeks about this and they have no answers. They've been duking it out. We'll see who wins this battle. If I had to bet, I would say HBO caves and puts it on.

Terrence (Gotham)

what did you think of my question around setting up an AP voting panel for rankings?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Horrible idea because there are very few media people who actually would know what the hell they are talking about once you get past the top couple of fighters.

Steve (NYC )

Any enws on Aerola's Sept 15th fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

He will fight, it will probably be on ESPN Deportes along with the Johnny Gonzalez-Roinet Caballero featherweight title bout. But Arreola's opponent is not set. There are few possibilities but it is not done yet.

Michael (Jersey Shore)

Dan,What do you think will happen with Paul Williams? Will he ever recover from the damge done in the two Sergio Martinez fights? Its tough watching him now...

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Paul is at a crossroads of his career. I am not sure what he will do. I do not think he will fight the rest of this year. And I am not sure what he has left.

Steve (Odessa)

Hi, When will Pirog fight ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

He is supposed to make his mandatory against Gennady Martirosyan in Russia in September, but he would put it off if he got the shot at Bute.

Sergio (Los Angeles)

What did you think of Vic Drakulich's performance in the Miranda- Despaigne fight? That was shaping up to be a pretty decent scrap and I think Vic got ahead of himself with the point deductions. And this comes a week after the Khan-Judah ko call. I gave him a pass on that one because most ref's wouldn't have called that a low blow but he did say at the beginning of the fight that any shots on the beltline would be called low.

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

I thought Vic was abysmal in that fight as I wrote in Monday's weekend scorecard. He just sucked the life right out of the fight and called some ticky tack low blows.

Fred (Cleveland)

The weird thing about Pavlik is that both decisions are defensible. Not boxing for $50K (defensible), not wanting to fight a top 3 supermiddleweight with knockout power on his turf, especially with Pavlik trying to mount a comeback (defensible). It's the way the thing were done that looks bad.

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

He is the one who asked for the Saturday fight!!!! It was SHOBOX!!!! Small money!!! ShoBox usually pays $50,000 a show. TR got Showtime to put up $75,000 for the show. 50 to Kelly, 20 to the opponent. Top Rank hoped to cover the rest of the expenses (like the undercard) out of the gate. Once TR's expenses were covered, Pavlik would have gotten every other dime the show generated (although it probably wouldn't have made any money). Point is, Top Rank is not a saint. But in this case, the entire show was done just to get Pavlik the work he wanted before Bute.

Brent (Cleveland)

Regarding Dzinzruk and HBO its also another reason why Greenberg is no longer there

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

He probably would have approved it, although I do not think he championed that aspect of the deal.

JonG (Queens)

heard anything recently about Sadam Ali? hasent scheduled a fight since he survived that 8th rd on FNF's a couple months back. I did see him talking with teddy during the wolak/rodriguez thriller but he didnt mention an upcomming fight. seems strange he was fighting on a monthly basis before.

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

I talked to his dad in Las Vegas at the Khan-Judah fight. He told me Sadam had a hand injury and was letting it heal.

C.M. (Toronto)

Hey Dan, don't knock Pavlik. The man has options. He can schedule a rematch with his brother in their basement for beer money. He just better hope his brother doesn't learn footwork.

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Bubba Gage (Ottawa Il)

Guess we can close the book on the whole Dan is a "Golden boy homer" thing. The guy calls it like he sees it. You can agree or disagree. But i respect dan for keeping it real. Something many many people today cant do.

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

I've been doing this for 12 years. I've been called a Top Rank shill, a Golden Boy homer. Supposedly, I hate Top Rank and GB, depending on the day. Don King supposedly owns me. I'm supposed to be in HBO's pocket. A Showtime guy. All I do is rip HBO. I kiss DiBella's butt. I only write nice about Goossen and Frank Warren. Blah, blah, blah. I have heard it all. I just keep it real and if that offends anyone so be it.

Corey (westwick)

True or False Steve Cunningham is one of the top most underrated fighters by the American fans out their(Taver vs Cunnuingham live on Showtime)

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Cunningham is definitely one of the more underrated fighters around. His biggest problem is that when he fought in the US I think he only had literally one televised fight (a great one with Adamek). And now he fights in Germany. Most fight fans have never seen him fight. It's unfortunate.

Richie (Bronx NY)

Any word on Wolak/Rodriguez remach.

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Nothing specific, but it is unlikely to happen, at least this year.

Richard (Haywards Heath, UK)

Dan, just wondering if you knew what is the biggest financial loss a promotional has ever incurred from an unsuccessful promotion? I know Frank Warren over here lost 500,000 pounds on Calzaghe-Kessler.

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

I don't know but plenty of promoters have lost big money on shows. One that sticks out in my mind is the Maskaev-Rahman rematch that was on PPV. It tanked and I think Top Rank once told me it lost something close to $2 million.

Rags (NYC)

You noted its time for Alvarado to take the next step...would you be okay with Alvarado-Holt as the co-feature to something? I think that fight has firework potential...

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Very good fight, although Holt is likely going to fight Danny Garcia on the Hopkins-Dawson ppv undercard.

Oscar De La Hoya (Puerto Rico)

Dan is also a Yankee homer and a New York Giants shill. Chooooowwwwww!

Brock (Illinois)

With Moreno and the tournament winner out of the picture, does Donaire have a legitimate challenger for his October match?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Nobody obvious, that is for sure. Really nobody top notch at bantam that is available. The two guys I thought of were maybe guys who have titles at 115 -- Narvaez or Cazares -- could come up. But really have no idea.

Bubba Gage (Ottawa Il)

And dont forget the best ones "You hate Floyd mayweather" and "Love Manny".

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

My bad. You're right. How could I forget that tag????

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

By the way Fight Freaks, Teddy Atlas won't be on FNF the rest of the season. Folks in Bristol told me he is off to Russia to train Povetkin. He will be replaced on FNF for the rest of the season (beginning tomorrow) by Sergio Mora.

dan (syracuse)

Does Bradley have a point when he says that HBO owes him 1.3m in his next fight regardless of opp. so why fight Khan next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

It was never "regardless of opponent." Another urban legend. It was an opponent HBO would approve. I agree, he should have taken the Khan fight and the superb deal he was offered. He didn't. So be it.

Jon (Spring, TX)

Dan, Do you know how the Beau Rivage in Biloxi is for a boxing match? Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Never been, but it has hosted fights before and I am told it's a pretty nice place. It's a small venue so I would imagine the seats are all probably very good.

Dylan (Ft. Collins)

On average, what are the budgets of shows like ShoBox, ESPN, ESPN Desportes, Epix, etc....?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

ShoBox is usually about $50,000 a show, although they do bump it up here and there for something "special" (like getting a big name like Pavlik on). ESPN varies. For a long time it was about $35,000 a show. Now there is a little more leeway and depending on the fight it could range from around $35,000 maybe to as much as $70,000, depending on the show offered. Deportes stuff falls under the same budget I believe as ESPN2. I actually don't know though in the event if it's a Deportes-only card like the Sept. 15 one could be. Epix is new and it varies. They have some money to spend though and would depend on the caliber of the show. For the Klitschko-Solis show they paid around $150,000. For Sturm-Macklin, a lot less. But for a big fight, they would certainly spend a lot more. They're new and their pay scale is not really established yet.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Max Kellerman had great things to say about you on his Twitter account.

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Good to know. Haven't seen that but I'll check it out. Been friends with Max a long time. And I will take this opportunity to wish him and his wife Erin congrats on the birth of their second daughter a couple of weeks ago.

Aaron (Cincinnati)

Anything coming up for Glen Johnson?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

He's been mentioned as a possible opponent for Bute in the fall now that Pavlik is apparently out of that one.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Any shows Epix is currently looking at? If so, is there a good likelihood you would be on the telecast (pending your availability)?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

I'm told Epix may do the Povetkin-Chagaev show on Aug. 27, but that is not confirmed. If they do the show, I will work on the commentary team.

Adam (Pittsburgh)

Dan, first time asking a question long time follower what are your thoughts on the Star Power PPV now that Matthyssee is fighting Morales....good to now great?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Very good PPV. Solid main event. Morales-Matthysse is an action fight (disgusting belt on the line notwithstanding). Canelo-Gomez could be interesting. And Vargas-Lopez as the opener is a very solid fight. It's a top-notch PPV. But let's not get carried away -- this is what ALL big PPV should be like for our $55 or 65 (in HD).

Rags (NYC)

Does the winner of tomorrow's fight between Coleman & Paris become any sort of factor @ 140?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

He certainly will boost himself up, but won't yet be a top 10 guy. But it's an important fight for both of them. They can establish themselves because it's the most notable bout so far in their careers.

Aaron (Cincinnati)

Maybe Teddy will show Povetkin some of Wlad's "obvious flaws" so he can dethrone the champ. Oh wait.....Teddy wouldn't let Povetkin get near Wlad.

Carl (NY)

Dan, what do you think of Pavlik's complaint that he wasn't given enough time (20 hours) to sign a contract for Saturday's fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

If that is true, that is on his team. I am told the contract was sent to his management weeks ago.

Pepe (Hialeah, FL)

Gary Russell, Jr vs Yuri Gamboa in 2012? Do you like the matchup?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Maybe end of next year -- that would be a sick fight in terms of the pure speed on display.

Gabe (Saginaw,Mi)

Sad story about Panchito Bojado. What a waste of talent!

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Totally agree. If you missed it, look at my most recent blog.

Clay (Chattanooga)

DTM - can we get the official prediction for the Coleman-Paris fight? I like Coleman. That was a SICK upper cut that he ended Lopez's night on when they fought!

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

I'm with you. I'm picking Coleman. I think Coleman is a more skilled, more experienced fighter. I think he's just better. Plus I was at Paris' last fight in Pontiac, Mich., in January. He fought Emanuel August on the Bradley-Alexander undercard and I thought he lost the fight. August got hosed on the scorecards.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Why did you move the chat to today? (If you don't mind me asking)

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

I wanted to chat this week like I always do, but I have a contingent of my family headed to town later today and I am taking a few days to chill and enjoy my family, which I don't get a chance to see very often. So even though I love the Freaks even I need a couple of days away from boxing. But fear not, I will be appearing on FNF tomorrow night to discuss the Kelly Pavlik situation and there will be a Monday scorecard (albeit brief, given the small amount of fights this weekend).

Wilkie (Toronto)

Dan if you find yourself in a Twitter war with Oscar, all you have to do is survive the first 8 Tweets. He will run away for the last 4.

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!!!!

JUAN (RIVERSIDE)

DO YOU THINK MATTHYSSE DESERVES THE BELT IF HE BEATS MORALES?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

My position is that while it's an excellent match and a fight I look forward to watching I do not believe a belt should even be at stake. It was stolen from Tim Bradley by the wretched WBC. Period.

Paul B (NY, NY)

WHY IS JUAN WRITING IN ALL CAPS?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

I WISH I KNEW!

Nick (Uk)

Any news from the Haye camp regarding his impending retirement? Would like to see him fight Arreola in the US.

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Have heard nothing. Maybe toe-morrow.

Abe (Portland)

Dan - haven't heard, but has Pacquiao actually signed the contract to fight Marquez?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

I've heard he has not actually signed the paperwork, but that is not unusual at all for Pacquiao or any other major fight. Often the actual paperwork isn't signed until much closer to the bout.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

"Human sacrifices, dogs and cats living together...mass hysteria!" Can you name the movie?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Ghostbusters. Come on, not even challenging.

Benjamin (Little Rock, Ark.)

Bute-Johnson? Sign me up. Would love to see how the impeccably conditioned Road Warrior handles all those sick body shots.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

And Glen is the Road Warrior, so he'd have no issue going to Montreal.

Fernando (Los Angeles, CA)

Hey Dan. What are you thoughts on Ismayll Syllakh, and do you know when he fights next? I absolutely believe that he will clean out the Light Heavyweight Division and one day be an all time great.

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

I like him a lot. And with inactivity forcing me to drop Brahmer from the rankings, Sillakh took his place in the 175 rankings. I don't know if I view him as a future all-time great. WAYYYY too soon to even suggest that, but he has a future I believe. Dude can fight and was a top amateur. Only negative is that he had a rep in the amateurs for a poor chin. So far it has not been an issue as a pro. In any case, I do look forward to seeing him again. He won a good fight on ESPN2 and fought in May on the Lebedev-Roy Jones card.

Clay (Chattanooga)

DTM - i'll be on vacation when "Star Power" comes on Sept 17th. i read once where it will b in some theaters. is that just in Vegas & LA? or should i just basically try to find a bar showing it?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

It will be in movie theaters around the country.

Sam (Santa Monica)

Very good performance last week from Lamont Peterson against Cayo (I might be higher on Cayo than most). Do you think Khan fights Peterson next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Agreed, very good performance from Lamont. That was the best win of his career. Peterson is now Khan's mandatory so he could get the call for December possibly. However, the mandatory is not due yet, so Khan could fight someone else. And then Khan plans to go to welterweight, meaning he would not fight Peterson, who would then get a chance to fight for one of the belts Khan would vacate.

Tony (DC)

Who was worse as WBA Champion, David Haye or Bruce Seldon?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

Definitely Seldon. I've been a Haye critic, but this is not even a contest.

Rags (NYC)

Dan: Quick glance at the #wbcisdisgusting ratings and not only did Bradley get hosed, but Kendall Holt, Ajose Olusegun, Devon Alexander, Humberto Soto & Ali Chebah also got screwed out of a #wbcisdisgusting title fight...class action lawsuit anyone?!

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

How about the fact that Olusegun and Cheebah are already scheduled for a final emiminator. Shouldn't they be fighting for the vacant belt then?

Jarvis (TN)

Any news on SSM retiring or further pursuing a career in the ring?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

He has not said what his plans are.

mike (bronx)

why do u answer questions about people useing all CAPS AND NOT A LEGIT QUESTION ABOUT PAULIE MALIGNNGI NEXT FIGHT

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

HE IS NURSING HIS HAND INJURY AND HAS NOTHING SCHEDULED AT THE MOMENT AS FAR AS I KNOW!

James (Windsor)

What happened to Jermain Taylor thought he was suppose to return.

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

That is the plan, although the original target date of Aug. 13 is not happening.

Cody (Minneapolis)

WILL THIS BE REFERRED TO AS THE CAPS CHAT?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

IT MIGHT BE!

Micah (PHX)

Dan- you were the master of restraint yesterday on Twitter. I knew you had enough to bury Oscar but you held back. Mad Respect.

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Wasn't easy. But I did make notes to myself of all of many the things I could crush him with just for fun. I just didn't tweet them. Not easy taking the high road.

Wilkie (Toronto)

If we'd prefer to stay in lower caps, will our questions still be considered?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

yes.

Jarrod (Indiana)

Dan, just purchased tix for my old man's birthday for FNF in St. Louis with Kermit Cintron. Do you know if Joe & Teddy are there early or late to take pics with fans generally?!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Nice present! Teddy won't be there. As I said earlier, he is going to Russia to train Povetkin. But Joe and Sergio are both cool guys and I'm sure would be willing to take pix as long as they are not in the middle of something work-related. They're both good with fans.

Dennis (Pittsburgh)

Will FNF only show Cintron-Smith next week or will get another fight? Anyone else on that card worth looking at?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

Full show -- certainly a co-feature on the broadcast. Dannie Williams is in it. Look at the fight schedule on the boxing page. It lists the full card.

Chris C (Washington DC)

Hey Dan, I'm getting married on September 17...any tips from your or the freaks on how I can sneak in some boxing time?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

That's a rough one. Rule of thumb -- NEVER plan a big event on Mexican Independce Day weekend. True story -- my wife's cousin is getting married Sept. 17. When I heard the date probably nine months ago I told her there was almost 100 percent chance of a major fight that weekend and that I would not be attending, she would have to go by herself and see the family. Sure enough, Mayweather-Ortiz was scheduled for that date and I will at the fight, not the wedding.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Admittedly I don't have all the details but it seems like Aydin is getting hosed. Wasn't he supposed to be fighting for a title or at least get a significant fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Yeah, but he took stepaside money twice to allow Berto other fights.

Gabe (Saginaw,Mi)

Mike Alvarado is a class act! We need more fighters like him to tell these bloodsucking organizations screw their belts!

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Agreed. Loved that he tossed his junk belt from the wretched WBC.

Matt (Naperville, IL)

Any word on the new main event for 8/19 FNF?

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Not yet.

Ace (Sac town)

GBP is just like every other promotor. They say whatever is convinient if it means $$$. We all hoped that they would live up to what THEY said about being different. THEY said it not us. But they are just like the rest of them.

Jose (Miami, FL)

It seems like you are a Khan fan, but I still dont see why he wont give Prescott a well deserved rematch. Wouldnt he want to avenge is only brutal quick KO Loss? He doesnt even mention his name after his fights. Whats your take?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

I think Khan has tons of talent and potential AND marketability and charisma. I've followed him since the amateurs. I had him as prospect of the year a few years ago. I think he can be a star. I would like to see him give Prescott a rematch. If you search my blog archive I have written extensively about it. But I also understand the window is closing. He could have done it but fought McCloskey again. Khan feels he is past that fight. Truth is, he is. But I'd still like to see the mess cleaned up. But at this point it looks like it won't happen.

Juan Castruita (San Diego, CA)

Dan, so what should the WBC have done? I'm not defending them, but they had a champ who didn't take the biggest fight available, wasn't going to defend his belt, was moving into a different weight class, and wanted to fight there. Why NOT strip it? Although, I have to concur, the Olusegun - Cheebah fight should have been the title fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Because they didnt follow their own rules. Bradley was under no obligation to fight Khan. I have said a thousand times he should have taken the deal. BUT BUT BUT it was not a mandatory. So the wretched WBC wasnt forcing that fight. His mandatory is not even set and nowhere near due. As for his promotional issues, that is not the concern of the wretched WBC until such time as his mandatory is due. For a guy to go six months with no fight is NOTHING. MANY MANY MANY MANY guys who have held wretched WBC titles have gone WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY longer than that without a peep. Promotional issues can be solved at a moment's notice. Look at Top Rank and Donaire? One day battling and then it got settled and he'll be back in October. So this inactivity/promotional stuff is all a BS smokescreen for the wretched WBC to hand Morales a shot at a belt. Simple as that. At worst, Golden Boy conspired wit the wretched WBC. At best, it is a hypocrite.

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

And also -- the wretched WBC was ready and willing to sanction Morales-Barrios, as horrific a title bout as they could muster. I have no real issue with Morales getting an opportunity, but make it legit. Barrios was a JOKE. He is not ranked by the wretched WBC (amazingly), had not fought for 11 months and had never fought in the division. So he was going to get the shot over the guys signed for a final eliminator? Seriously? Matthysse getting the fight makes it better but the fact is him and Morales lost their last fights. Doesn't mean I don't want to see them fight. I like that fight a lot. I will enjoy it. My point is it should not be for a vacant title that should never have been vacated in the first place.

@maceinthehole (Denver)

That last response was long...thanks for not doing it in ALL CAPS!

Jesse (Minneapolis)

Awesome response to Juan about the wretched WBC, take a breath Dan-O. Well said

paul, carlsbad [via mobile]

will there be a notebook tomorrow

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

No.

Michael (Jersey Shore)

Is that a record for most Y's used in a word?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

Not sure.

Steve (LA)

Dan, what's up at HBO....any news on Ross' replacement ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

Nothing yet.

Jesse (Minneapolis)

Freaks, feel free to let Jose Sulaiman know what you think of the WBC on twitter @josesulaiman

Tomer (New York, NY)

The WBC is obligated to strip the belt if the champion doesn't fight their mandatories, not 'the biggest fight available'. Also, unless Bradley surrendered the belt in writing, he technically was still a 140 lber even if he has eyes towards Pacquiao and Mayweather (as does pretty much everyone else).

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Of course. They applied things inconsistently. Go look and see how often Oscar made a mandatory when he was champion? RARELY. How often did he go more than 6 months between fights. The wretched WBC is a joke and the promoters are in bed with them.

Aaron (MA)

read that a pre Mayweather/Ortiz FNF Special may take place on 9/16. Any truth to that?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Yes, but not done yet. And may only be an ESPN Deportes thing. Could be shows Sept. 15 and 16 on Deportes.

Scott (Eagan, MN)

Hey Dan, read a quote from Ann Wolfe the other day, "We need a real fight, we need some fresh meat. We need to kill someting and eat it." I love Ann Wolfe....as long as I don't have to be in the same room with her.

Aaron (MA)

are Pongsaklek Wonjonkam and Sven Ottke future Hall of Fame inductees?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Pongsaklek probably. Ottke unlikely. I will probably vote for Pongsaklek. I will never vote for Ottke.

Power Pellets (Las Vegas)

Dan is it true that Winky Wright is going to retire because his school of business has been receiving so much tuition money?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley. Actually, on the Winkster front, his adviser told me this week that he is still looking to fight and could come back if Canelo fights in December on that card.

Jake04 (Chula Vista, CA)

Do you thing Pavlik's proclamation that he is fighting for himself and not for Youngstown hurt him even more with his Ohio fans?

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

Obviously, at this point Pavlik doesn't care what they think. I understand his point, it just is the kind of thing you probably are better off not saying.

Tom (Reading)

Dan the real loser who hasn't been mentioned in the whole Morales/WBC Title Scandal is Anthony Crolla. Sure that wasn't the most exciting of match ups but he signed up for the biggest fight of his life and was well into his training camp when he was pushed aside for the scam match up for the vacant WBC title. He had fans who were spending big bucks on going out to support him and they have now been left stranded. Another sign of the "change" that Golden Boy have brought into Boxing for the better. Well done on calling them out on their utter hypocrisy.

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

You're 100 percent right. Just another aspect of this sorry story.

Kelly Pavlik (Youngstown)

Do you think they offer scholarships at the Winky Wright School of Business?

Dave (San Jose)

WiLl YoU aNsWeR qUeStIoNs LiKe ThIs?

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

JuSt tHiS OnE tIme.

JonG (Queens)

i feel bad saying this because i always liked morales but i think im hoping for mathysse to Knock him out just so el presidente dosent get to scam him into his 4th title

@TheBoxingEmpire (Twitter)

Did you enjoy what Edison Miranda said about you? He says in Despaigne's Oscar acceptance speech, he should remember to thank those who nominating him including Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

I saw that press release and was amused.

Micah (PHX)

Where can I get some Manny Rookie cards Dan? I've had no luck online.

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

I bought the ones I tweeted photos of on ebay. Got a five-card lot for a good price.

Matt (Cols)

So was all the MMA tweeting a one time thing, or will you be covering MMA more?

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

I just happened to be home so I was flipping back and forth between the Strikeforce show and the Alvarado card on Top Rank Live and tweeted a little about it. People seemed interested so I did for the rest of the show, but I wouldnt say it would be a regular thing. It was I think only the second time I have tweeted about an MMA show I was watching because I dont usually watch MMA shows.

Salomon Gaxiola (Mexico)

ANY NEWS ON THE LOVE CHILD????????????

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Nothing new.

Benjamin (Little Rock, Ark.)

All-Caps Chat? Lou DiBella would fit right in.

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

Exactly!!! Like his Twitter.

Matthew (NY)

DOES COLLAZO HAVE ANYTHING PLANNED YET!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

Could fight on the Sept. 17 weekend.

Michael (Jersery Shore)

Did any of your Oscar twitter notes involve fishnets?

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

I will will invoke my rights under the fifth ammendment.

GUS JOHNSON (IN YOUR CAPS CHAT)

HOPE YOU DIDN'T THINK ABOUT NOT INVITING ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

HOW COULD WE HAVE A CAP CHAT WITHOUT YOU!! OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CAPS IN BUNCHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alex (Louisville)

WHY IS EVERYONE YELLING!

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

I HAVE NO IDEA!!!!!!

James (Montreal)

What do you think about a possible match up Cloud-Pascal... looks like a great fight for both !?

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

eally like that fight.

Emanuel (Buenos Aires)

Dan, you mentioned Narvaez earlier. Do you think there's any chance he'll fight any of the big names in his division, or will he continue to pile on defenses against nobodies?

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

I really don't know. But he is probably nearing the end of his career. Why not take the shot to make a good payday and go for the bantamweight belts in America?

George (Fontana, CA)

Wheres Mike Jones?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

Nursing a hand injury and should be back Nov. 12 or Dec. 3.

poli (cali)

so is TR done with pavlik? really early, but any names being thrown out there for kelly?

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Not sure what Top Rank will do but he is under contract to Top Rank for awhile.

Marc (Malden, MA)

I don't have twitter, so WOW, you were watching an MMA show? I'm shocked. Did you enjoy it? Probably not the best show to convert someone, but the main event and woman's fight were good.

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

That's why you need to follow me on Twitter @danrafaelespn

francis (northridge)

Dan, pls. be patient with Oscar. He's just having a real bad day accepting the fact that not only Pac beat him up so bad he quit and worse, Pac's "Sometimes When We Touch" is no. 11 and climbing the charts beating up Oscar's failed CD.

Richie (Bronx NY)

How great was the HBO special on Derek Jeter.

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

I absolutely loved it. I burned it to a DVD to go with my DVD of the full 3,000th hit game.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

Is Agbeko- Mares a 1 fight telecast? And Showtime's schedule looks dry, do they have anything scheduled before Ward-Froch Oct 29?

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

Yes, one fight next week.

Yordanis Despaigne (?)

And lastly... I would like to thank Vic Drakulich for helping me win this Academy Award for Best Actor.

psycho (LaLaLand)

were u biased against GB when Arum gave you the finger?

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

I'll let that comment speak for itself.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

Interested in your thoughts on Teon Kenneddy ? Does he got something ?

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

Thought his fight with Jorge Diaz earlier this year was terrific. I wanted that fight to be on ESPN2 but it was rejected. I knew it would be good and it was a barnburner. Just really a shame it was not televised. To me it is the off-tv fight of the year so far.

Eric P (Saratoga Springs)

I'm late to the game, are we chatting tomorrow also?

Joe (Western Mass)

Has there been a Josh Clottey sighting lately?

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

Yes, he's on Twitter and we recently tweeted at each other.

Big Al (WI)

Dan, Part of the problem With Pavlik is that the 2011 version of Pavlik wants to get paid like he's still the 2008 version of himself. That ship has sailed.

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

Sailed probably almost around the world by now.

Lee (Los Angeles, CA)

There will be a UFC event in D.C. on October 1st. Any chance DTM attends?

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

Unlikely as I plan to be in AC for the Sergio Martinez fight.

Mike (Newington)

Dan, Not sure if you would know a lot about this, but how did HBO use up so much of their budget for the year that they have to put hopkins-dawson on ppv?

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

Wasted a lot of money on bad deals.

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

We have breaking news from the Bat Email.

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

We have breaking news from the Bat Email.

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

Pacquiao's attorney's have filed a moition in Las Vegas court a ruling in their favor in the defamation suit claiming Mayweather lied repeatedly to get out of the deposition he never took. Supposedly, Mayweather said he was training when, according to the paperwork, Mayweather was partying. Hosting a party in Atlanta, for example, one of the days he had been offered to do the depo. They seek court costs, damages and a ruling in their favor.

Jon (NYC)

Whatever happened to Joe Greene? It's been over a year since he lost to Vanes. No shame in that loss.

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

Not a clue.

Nizzi (Des Moines)

Why would HBO blow their entire budget 6 months into the year. That seems like pretty bad business to me. So we just wont have any HBO televised fights in the fall?

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

Well Ross Greenburg no longer has a job. Put it that way.

Mark (NYC) [via mobile]

Will Likar Ramos KO1 Likar Ramos be a candidate for knockout of the year?

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!!

JS (Glendale, CA)

hosting a party IS how floyd trains...

Roddie (Ohio)

Jo Jo Dan- Any truth to W. Klitschko taking on Mariusz Wach in November, and if so, your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

According to Bernd Boente, who I emailed with today, that is not a fight they are looking at, which is no surprise, since Wach is an unknown with no particular resume. That is not to say he isn't any good. Just means he has no business in a heavyweight championship fight at this stage of his career.

Matthew (NY)

Did Kell Brook duck Mike Jones?

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

No, I dont think either ducked the other at all. Their promoters went in other directions. Would have liked to see it, but maybe down the road.

Tony (LA)

DTM - Do you know which promotor Alexander will sign with?

Dan Rafael
  (2:47 PM)

No, all open to discussion.

evan (venice, ca)

who decides when a fight like bhop vs. dawson goes to ppv? hbo or golden boy?

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

In this case, it was HBO, which "flipped" it to PPV. They owe GB a pre-negotiated license fee ($3 million, from what my sources say) and they will try to recoup that money from the PPV sales.

Tony (LA)

DTM - Has Linare Demarco been confirmed?

Dan Rafael
  (2:50 PM)

Both sides say the deal is agreed to, although it is not signed as far as I know.

Larry David (Santa Monica)

:)

Dan Rafael
  (2:50 PM)

You are the Edmund Hillary of sh------ where you eat!

Rob (Denton, Tx)

Is Atwone Smith from St. Louis ? If not, then why is that fight in the Lou ?

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

No, Antwone is from Florida. It's in St. Charles, Mo. at a casino there. Dannie Williams, who is from the area, is in the co-feature.

R! (Bay Area)

Who do you think Wlad ends up facing towards the of the year? Its a wasteland at Heavyweight

Dan Rafael
  (2:53 PM)

Really don't know. Have not heard any specific names. I know Fury was mentioned, but I doubt it will be him. He and his team know they are nowhere ready for that.

Richie (Bronx NY)

Can Bradley sue WBC for the unwarranted stripping of the belt.

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

His manager told me they are considering that course of action.

Sully (Boston)

Should the media push for a Klitchko-Hopkins fight? This would be the biggest fight aside from Pacquiao-Mayweather.

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

Insanity. Epic mismatch. BHop is great. Not that great.

Al (Las Cruces, NM)

I've been reading about Freddy Roach helping out with the olympic boxing, do you know if he was/is in Alabama this week?

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 PM)

I can't say for sure he is there but he told me when we were together after the Khan-Judah fight that he was planning to go for a few days.

Dave (San Jose)

Didn't Pavlik ask for the tuneup against a southpaw in the first place? Now he claims the $50k he's getting for it is chump change and also claiming Top Rank has been robbing him his whole career? Wow, dude is really overestimating his place in boxing right now.

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 PM)

Bingo.

Nick (Delaware)

Why is Kotelnik gone from the top 10, just inactivity, or did I miss a story?

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

Inactivity. Been a year since his last fight so he was dropped. Mike Alvarado, who won last week, moved into the top 10 to take up the open spot.

Dustin (Maine)

Last week: You were biased against Top Rank and were Oscars best buddy. This week: You are biased against Golden Boy and are probably secret friends with Arum.

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

Welcome to my world for the past 12 years.

Roy (Reno)

HUGE props on calling out GB and WBC. I can't believe all of the apologists out there. I LOVE the Morales-Matthysse fight but it should not be a title fight.

Dan Rafael
  (3:03 PM)

Exactly.

Aaron (MA)

do you think Rigondeaux may fight on the 8/19 FNF since the main event has fallen through?

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 PM)

No chance of that.

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 PM)

#wbcisdisgusting

Richie (Bronx NY)

Dan, have great time with family this weekend....

Dan Rafael
  (3:05 PM)

Thanks.

Dan Rafael
  (3:06 PM)

And on that note, thanks for chatting in the special Thursday Fight Freaks chat. Enjoy the FNF card tomorrow and catch up on all the news stories and blogs. Enjoy the weekend and I'll talk with you all next week. Peace.
