Chat with Bill Williamson

Bill Williamson
  (2:01 PM)

Let's get rolling, everyone

Jesse (kirksville)

with the chiefs line and McClain, how many yards do you see charles getting this year? roughly of course

Bill Williamson
  (2:02 PM)

1,500-1,600?Remember, we likley won't see him be a workhorse. His totals will be monitored.

Andy (Utah)

Did the Chiefs sign Gaither intending to sit him this year and let him get healthy, or are they actually expecting production out of him this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

I think it depends on his health. If his back is ready, I think we will see him get a chance to play soon.

CMB (Denver)

Hello BW, Brodrick Bunkley is listed just above Ty Warren on the Broncos D-Line depthchart. Has Bunkley impressed that much or is Denver trying to save Warren for the season? I fully expected Warren to start on the D-Line.

Bill Williamson
  (2:06 PM)

I think they both will play a lot. Warrne will get his playing time.

Brendan San Francisco [via mobile]

With a solid d line up front, The Raider Nation expects big things from the young linebacker McClain in the middle this yr. Thoughts?

Bill Williamson
  (2:07 PM)

That's why he was drafted at No. 8 last year -- to produce big things. He was solid last year and Hue Jackson is talking him up, so the Riaders do expect big things from him.

Allan (Lincoln, England)

First off, great work throughout the free-agent frenzy. My question is; If Donald Butler has a outstanding season, would he be eligible for Rookie of the Year awards? Blake Griffin won ROY in the NBA after missing his true rookie season with injury, is it the same in the NFL?

Bill Williamson
  (2:09 PM)

Thanks ... Off the top of my hand (no time to check during this chat), but I don't believe he is considered a rookie any more. But, of coruse, essentially he is.

Donnie (Daytona Beach)

Hey Bill i was wondering if the Raiders were after any vet WR and if there is any update about Lofa or Hayden? Or if they are after someone else.

Bill Williamson
  (2:10 PM)

It was reported last week that Oakland was considering both Tatupa and Hayden. They are both coming off injuries and teams seem to be weary of signing them at this point.

Conner (Los Angeles)

Raiders coming back to LA.... bad idea?

Bill Williamson
  (2:12 PM)

For Oakland fans it is, for sure.

jesse (kirksville)

studebaker is, as of now, starting at outside linebacker. how long do you see that lasting?

Bill Williamson
  (2:13 PM)

Until one of the young kids shows he's ready. But, hey, if Studebaker is good, he'll get a chance.

Jesse (Missouri)

how many probowlers do you see the chiefs having this year? potentially

Bill Williamson
  (2:15 PM)

Charles, Bowee, Cassel, Hali, Derrick Johsnon, Flowers, Berry.

tommy (new orleans)

who is going to catch the ball in oakland i cant see anyone emerging as the goto guy if there is one please let me know?

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

Don't sleep on Jacoby Ford. Star waiitng to happen.

Keith (New Jersey)

what does kevin boss bring to the table that zach miller does not?

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

Better blocker.

Miller (Missouri)

ricky stanzi. thoughts?

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

I think he has a chance to develop. I look forrward to seeing him next week when I go to the Chiefs' camp.

Bizel 69 (No Cali)

How much of a liability will the Raiders secondary be this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:18 PM)

We'll have to wait and see, but their cornerback play is not going to be good as it was with No. 21. That's just a fact. Players throughout the secondary will have step it up.

Kevin (Des Moines)

If gaither does start do you think they will put him at LT and move albert to RT?

Bill Williamson
  (2:22 PM)

We don't know that answer yet. I'm sure the Chiefs have a plan. I think, if healthy, he could play either spot, although he may be better suited for LT.

Chris (Santa Barbara)

In baseball the big preseason move was A. Gonzales and the best under the radar move was Russel Martin. In Football this year I say Haynesworth is the big move and Bob Sanders will be the under-rated move. What do you think of that comparison?

Bill Williamson
  (2:24 PM)

I love baseball, so kudos for the comparision.I think Asomugha was the A. Gonzalez move. But I like the Sanders call. The Chargers are fired up about this guy. He didn't look rusty to me. If he stays healthy, he's a boon addition.

Keith (New Jersey)

has stefen wisniewski been struggling playing center in camp? or has he just been more comfortable at guard?

Bill Williamson
  (2:26 PM)

I think they are just looking to see if they would be stronger with Satele at center and Wiz II at guard. Oakland's line is a work in progress, so the coaching staff is just looking for the right mix. It's smart.

chargerz (Salt Lake)

i would hate if the chargers moved to la. what do you think about it?

Bill Williamson
  (2:27 PM)

San Diego deserves the Chargers. plus, I love going there. It would be a major bummer.

Joe (Vegas)

Is Moore's emergence in Raider camp fool's gold or did Al Davis find another Jacoby-like steal in the 5th round?

Bill Williamson
  (2:29 PM)

I wouldn't say it's fool's gold. If he's good, he's good. But, it would be premature to think a fifth-round pick can come in and make a huge, immediate impact.

Al (Wausau, WI)

Bill. do you feel it's likely that the Chargers will shake off their early-season "getting started" slump and start off stronger (more wins early in the season) compared to past years?

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

Every year we think this is the year it has to stop and it hasn't yet. So, I'm just going to wait and see what happening in that deal.

Chris (Columbia, MO)

A signing I thought that went a little under the radar was Oakland bringing in QB Trent Edwards. What's your opinion on the signing?

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

I think he will get the chance to be the No. 2 quarterback, but I don't see him challenging Jason Cmapbell unless Campbell plays unexpectedly bad.

Roberto (Atlanta)

Do you think any team gives Jamarcus Russell a call this season?

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

Maybe to say Hi. That would be about it.

JP (Denver)

More likely Denver takes a step back on the offensive side of the ball or gets better on the D-fence side of the ball?

Bill Williamson
  (2:36 PM)

I think we'll see a decent amount of improvement on defense.

Mike (San Diego)

B-Dub, thoughts on R. Matthews for this season? He's really looking like a bit of a pansy right now. How can his teammates rely on that?

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

I think he has to do what it takes to stay healthy (or play hurt) and prove to everyone he can be a difference maker. This is a big year for him.

george (los angeles )

great blog read daily thank you. who has the best chance to reach 1,000 yards receiving this year? schillens, murphy, ford?

Bill Williamson
  (2:41 PM)

Thanks, I'd say Ford. Just a feeling.

Juan (LA)

Is Todman going to step into Sproles roles this year? If not who is?

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

Todman will get a chance. They like him. He is a fun runner to watch.

Hernesto (Mexico)

Hi Bill, Anyone standing out from your time at Charger camp?

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

Todman, Crayton, Garay, Sanders, Gilchrist to name a few.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Seen reports that McGahee is way ahead of Moreno..could he be the starter, and Moreno the 3rd down back?

Bill Williamson
  (2:44 PM)

They broguth him as a complementary guy, but McGahee gets it done more that Moreno, I can see roles switching. The word is McGahee has looked good.

Tommy (Oakland)

Bresnahan seemed to hint that Oakland may be switching up their defensive allignment/scheme a bit. Does this mean less man to man coverage, or would Al strike down that notion immediately?

Bill Williamson
  (2:45 PM)

I've seen that. We'll see. We all know how Al loves man-to-man.

Mike (KC)

Will Siler be starting next to Derrick Johnson this year? I loved that signing. He played very well in his 2009 and is only 25. Seems like the perfect compliment to DJ.

Bill Williamson
  (2:46 PM)

I think he'll get a chance, but he'll have to earn the spot. It won't be given to him.

MattC (Dallas)

Does Phillip Rivers make the Pro-Bowl this season?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

I think he'll get a chance, but he'll have to earn the spot. It won't be given to him.

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

I don't hate his chances if that's what you are asking?

Honest Joe (Can'tlieville)

Bill, Love your stuff! Consider each AFC West team, is it fair to say that "only the Chiefs" improved during the free agency? It seems like Raiders lost out, Denver did not seriously address RB and Dline, and chargers kept their starters but lost key players.

Bill Williamson
  (2:49 PM)

I think San Diego improved. They kept the players they wanted and they added three interesting pieces on defense in Spikes, Sanders and Travis LaBoy. I should have mentioned LaBoy earlier. San Diego is exicted about him as a pass rusher.

DeShawn ((NC))

Do you think the Chiefs have a shot at winning the division?

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

Why not? They did last year before we knew they wree any good. Now we know they are good and they got better. Sure, they ahve a chance.

Jesse (Missouri)

Is eric berry the future leader of chiefs football?

Bill Williamson
  (2:51 PM)

I'd say so, ues.

Basil (Baltimore)

What would have to go right for the Raiders this year in order for them to make the playoffs?

Bill Williamson
  (2:51 PM)

Jason Campbell takes next step and defense locks it down and stops giving up explosive plays.

Adam (Nashville)

well, Bill, love the insights, but you have ducked this question the last few chats. do the bloggers compete among themselves to get their stuff on the highlight screen and is there any "in your face" kinda stuff if you do?

Bill Williamson
  (2:53 PM)

What do you think?

some guy (out back)

If Terrelle Pryor is declined entry to the supplemental draft, would he be able to be signed as an unrestricted free agent?

Bill Williamson
  (2:53 PM)

No, he'd have to wait until next year.

MattC (Dallas)

Bill, any news on Gates injury issues? Can he go a full 16 games or will it be alot of gametime decisions? Who's the #2TE in SD?

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

They are being cautious with Gates. They expect him to be fine. Randy McMichael is a capable backup.

raymond (los angeles )

is jamaal charles the clear best runner in the division or does mcfadden give him run for title?

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

They are both very good, but I give the edge to Charles. Maybe that changes this season.

Danny terry (bay area)

before the season starts do you see the Raiders going after a another WR or O line

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

I wouldn't shock me if another O-lineman was brought in.

George (Atlanta)

Hue Jackson recently talked about needing in-game production from DHB and him being used less as a decoy this year. Should Raider fans hold on to the hope that Heyward-Bey finally does something this year or just accept that it was a wasted top ten draft pick?

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

He should have that answer come January. He has to show something this year or he could be on the way out.

BJ (Indiana)

How much does it hurt the division as a whole that they have to play the NFC North this year?

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

It's a lot tougher than playing the NFC West last year. That division winner went 7-9. The North had the two teamn in the NFC championship game and the Super Bowl winner. Yeah, it's not going to be easy.

Bill Williamson
  (3:02 PM)

Great hour floks. Because of travel reasons, uour chat will be at 4 p.m. ET next Friday.
