Thanks for all your questions. I am about to get Dave on the phone.
Today was a big day for us on the recruiting side. We feel great about the ESPNU 100 list. Although the college coaches haven't seen the guys as much as we have, there are about 115 guys worthy of the list and we had a tough time packing them into the ESPNU 100. Thanks for all your questions, let's get to them.
What do you see for UC's 2012 recruiting options. With only a couple scholarships available, it seems they should be pretty selective. Are there any big guys that have high interest in the bearcats?
Your right Cincy doesn't have many scholarships and for that reason they are locked in on new ESPNU 100 member Chris Obekpa. He seems to be the guy Mick Cronin zeroed in on in July. I imagine he is on top of their big man list. Obekpa does one thing at an elite level -- he has the instincts for blocking shots.
here on espn, pitts 2012 rcruit steven adams only is ranked as a 40 out of 99. i assume thats because he plays mostly in new zealand but how good do you really think he is? in the recent addidas nations in 2 games he went for 12 points and 20 rebounds and in another 37 points and 18 rebounds individually. thanks
Hey Pat, Steven Adams is a lot like this year's Enes Kanter. We all know he's good, but no one has seem him. I hear he's coming to the US in November and if that's the case we will see him and be able to rank him. Johnathan Govoni of Draft Express gushed over him at adidas Nations. We will try and get a look at him and we know he's good but we haven't seen him which is why he isn't in our rankings.
Hi Dave,Sam Dekker seems to be steadily moving up the rankings. How high do you think he can go before all is said and done?
Hey Joe, Dekker is one of the toughest guys I've seen in this class. Everything he does translates at Wisconsin. He's like a Badger recruit on steroids. He's everything they want but better than what they've been getting. He played the entire NBA Camp with a rib out of place. He has a shot to be a McD's All-American and future Big Ten POY. He looks like a winner.
Do you think there is a legitimate shot the Mitch McGary will sign with the Terps?
Hey Andrew, McGary has always talked highly about MD. It doesn't hurt that he plays for an Under Armour-sponsored AAU team. There is a lot of competition for his services but the Terps are a contender. Other recruits include the Harrison twins who have also expressed interest and will be a major factor.
Arizona's 2012 class will include: Grant Jerrett, Gabe York and __? A. Brandon Ashley B. Kaleb TarczewskiC. Both
Hey Dre, I like Arizona's chances with Brandon Ashley. I think Tarczewski has been in strong with Kansas for a long time and I don't see that changing. Plus, Kentucky has entered the picture with Tarczewski which caught some people off guard.
Do you have any thoughts on Marquette's chances to land another impact post player with their final scholarship; are they still in on Kris Dunn?
Hey Dave, I don't know what your definition of impact is, but I don't think they will land a top 50 or top 75 post player. They have been heavily involved with Dunn and he is the Tigers best chance of landing an impact player this year.
With Virginia in desperate need of a PG, what do you think their chances are for getting a 2012 in James Robinson or LJ Rose or a 2013 and hope they get Barber, Britt, or Koeing?
Hey Michael, Virginia's competition of Robinson may wind up being Pitt. Cavs have appealed to him hoops and academic wise and have done a great job with him. I expect them to go after LJ Rose and imagine GTown and Virginia come to the forefront with LJ Rose, who has seen his list shrink due to other commitments. All of the juniors you mentioned are legit targets. With Britt, he plays with DC Assault, and there last three have gone to Duke and I know he like UNC. Tony Bennett has done a lot of advance with Koennig.
Do you think Memphis will compete this year at getting Really good recruits this year?
What's up Eric, I think Pastner is putting his stamp on the program and his program is one of the heavy hitters not in a BCS conference. Jarnell Stokes was in their backyard and is at Oak Hill and is a situation worth watching. They are a long shot for Muhammad and a junior to watch is Nick King. Memphis was first to offer and he's had a tremendous summer.
What are the chances Arizona scores Brandon Ashley? And if they do, do they have the best class in the nation? From all signs it seems like Gabe York has played his way into a top 20 player plus Grant Jerrett.
If you had to say who the favorite was for Ashley, Arizona would get the nod. If that happens, very possible they would have the best class in the nation but a lot of big names are still out there.
when will kentucky make their big splash and is LJ rose a option for them
Most difficult question to answer. Best guess is we will hear rumblings about their first commit in August. They are involved with too many great players, not to have a good class. KY fans have been spoiled with three straight No. 1 classes and it remains to be seen if they will do it again. When a program deals with so many big-time prospects, the recruits are more likely to take their time. No reason to hit the panic button.
Do you see Cam Ridley being a one and done? Or staying 2 years?
Ridley's in the process of developing game and personality. It's difficult to say if he will stay. It all depends on if he is a college producer. It depends on what he does his freshman year.
Best guess at where Adam Woodbury ends up? Thanks.
I always thought he was an Iowa lean and getting Mike Gesell certainly doesn't hurt Iowa's chances. He has really grown over the last six months. I think he will take some visits and explore UNC and other high-majors but at the end of the day I think someone will have to knock is socks off to beat Iowa.
Why is Martavious Newby not listed in the ESPNU 100?
One of the bigger energy guys in the class, total blue-collar kid gets a lot done. Ole Miss has been very successful with guys liek this. He was considered but he needs to improve his perimeter skill. But I think he will be a good college player.
With only two scholarships open (at the moment) for 2012, who sits at the top of Duke's wishlist?
If Duke could hand pick two guys for their class I think it would be Shabazz Muhammad and Mitch McGary.
What remaining 2012 prospects do you think the tar heels will be able to land?
They need a big guy and they are in on McGary and Tarczewski, who is a long shot. Woodbury is looking at them and Brice Johnson is in the mix as well. They need one of the four. TJ Warren is another hot name but they will have to compete with NC State and Warren's father played at NC State.
Still perplexed as to why Paige is ranked higher than Yogi. What does Paige bring to the table that Yogi lacks?
In my opinion, Paige is the best combination of scorer, setup man and distributor. His head to head matchups with Yogi were sub-par for both guys. If I needed to take one PG in the country for one game I think Paige because he blends being a setup man, distributor and scorer better than any other PG in the class. Ferrell is much more inclined to be a scorer. Yogi is the No. 3 PG in the class and that's pretty high praise.
Dave, I noticed many of the player heights in the top 100 aren't exactly up-to-date. For example, Grant Jerrett measured 6-10 at the Amare Stoudamire camp but he's still listed at 6'8. The same height he was two years ago. Will they be updated eventually?
Our man Brendan Nolan has been busy keeping the database up to date with new player and he is great but you are right, we need to update some guys including Grant Jerrett.
How do you explain every Indiana commit dropping in the rankings? After the summer players like Yogi Ferrell and Hanner Perea have had, how do they not at least hold their previous positions?
Yogi and Hanner, weren't dropped in the sense your thinking. What happened in this case was some players moved up and as result some players have to take a step back.
Do you know when Jordan Hare is Planning on making a decision? Who are his favorites? And what schools does he plan on visiting?
For us, Hare has been the most difficult to get an up to date status on and I can honestly tell you I don't know what's going on with his recruitment.
Wondering how you say Yogi Ferrell is more of a scoring point guard. Isn't the exact opposite true of Yogi? Everything I've seen or heard about him say he's the quintessential floor-general point guard, not a scorer?!?!
I think what happens is that fans tend to read all of the flowery things from their team sites and get blinded by the context of the player. Yogi Ferrell is an elite score-first PG. Whoever called him the quintissential floor general isn't being accurate in his assesment. He can score and has good speed but it wouldn't be accurate to call him a true PG.
From Nike Skills to Nike Global, Omar Calhoun outplayed Rasheed Sulaimon. What makes him 15 spots better than him? The kid was the leading scorer for the Nike EYBL regular season and Nike Global leading scorer.
Great question. Calhoun was among the most efficient and accurate scorers in the EYBL. He's had a tremendous run. The difference between him and Sulaimon is that Sulaimon does more on both ends of the floor. This is a tough questin because you are talking about two elite guys who are in a position to be McD's AA.
Thanks for all your questions. I think our 2013 and 2014 class are really strong and they will be coming out tomorrow and Friday. Be sure to check them out. Thanks again.
