Chat with AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (11:00 AM)

Good morning gang! We've got one hour of fantasy chattage up ahead of us, so let's get to it! Second cup of coffee in hand... Who is up first?

Andrés (Maracaibo, Venezuela)

Greeting from Venezuela, AJ. How do you see underperforming stars like Shin Soo Choo and Jason Heyward finishing the season? Thanks

AJ Mass
  (11:01 AM)

More optimistic on Choo. In a one-and-done league, I've already cut bait with Heyward.

Mitch (MD)

Trying to manage my IP - are you trusting CJ Wilson vs Boston his next start or would I be better off streaming Luebke vs Fl @ PETCO?

AJ Mass
  (11:02 AM)

Working on Daily Notes this morning, having trouble slotting Luebke for Sunday, but he's definitely going to be a top 10 choice for the day.

Vincent (Atlanta)

AJ, I got the 3rd overall pick in my fantasy football draft..Knowing AP and more than likely Arian Foster will be gone, would you consider C.J or somebody else?

AJ Mass
  (11:04 AM)

It's between Charles and CJ at No.3, and I'm not going to let the holdout stuff factor in... I just can't imagine that doesn't get done. Me, I like CJ better, but you can argue Jamaal.

Carter (Texas)

is it a bad idea to draft Owen Daniels as my TE1 when I already have Andre Johnson?

AJ Mass
  (11:06 AM)

I don't like to "double dip" too much in fantasy football b/c if the Texans get shutout, now you're in a heap of trouble. If he's the best player on the board, I still take him,but a 50-50 choice goes someplace else.

Alex (Milwaukee)

What kind of season do you think Brandon Marshall is going to have? Is he a good value in the 4th-5th round or as a WR2?

AJ Mass
  (11:07 AM)

Cautiously optimistic. I think Henne will be able to play well enough that Marshall can have WR2 value.

Eric (fantasyland)

What are your thoughts on Tony Moeaki this year? poised for a suprise breakout season, and possible LATE (14th -15th round) sleeper?

AJ Mass
  (11:08 AM)

Wrote about KC today in 32Q...but focused on WR corps and didn't mention Moeaki. Overall, I think Chiefs throw more this year, and once you're that late in a draft, why not look to Moeaki?

Nick (The Nasty)

Who would you rather have as a QB2: Mcnabb or Orton?

AJ Mass
  (11:09 AM)

I think McNabb has a much better cast around him, and still has some left in the tank.

David (Montreal)

If you absolutely had to draft a NE running back, which one are you taking?

AJ Mass
  (11:10 AM)

I'd go with BJGE, but certainly we all know that six different guys could contribute to Bill's run game.

BJ (Indiana)

Matt Forte or LaGarette Blount

AJ Mass
  (11:11 AM)

I like Blount better.

Nick (The Nasty)

I have the second pick in a PPR league. I know that AP doesn't get as many receptions as some of the other top backs but assuming that Arian is taken #1 should I take AP?

AJ Mass
  (11:14 AM)

I think people in general over emphasize the impact of the PPR points. To me, it's still about the number of touches, and AP is going to be the No.1 guy in Minnesota. He's still my pick, ahead of the Rice and McCoy types.

Gary (Omaha)

Hanley Ramirez! Just read a report that he might not play again this year???? I can't find any other details. Do you have any updates?

AJ Mass
  (11:15 AM)

It's just clubhouse speculation right now, but even if does come back, I doubt he's at 100 percent.

Tom (Calif)

Morneau or Hosmer ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:16 AM)

Hosmer for me.

Nick (Sagnasty)

Tiger OF ROS: Delmon or Boesch?

AJ Mass
  (11:18 AM)

Boesch for me.

Hanley Ramirez (Florida)

They call me "Mr. Glass."

AJ Mass
  (11:18 AM)

I always thought he'd look good in purple.

Frank (Boston)

Adrian Gonzales is killing me right now, should I bench him until he finds a groove? I have Pujols, Alex Gordon & Arod to fill out the CL Spots for now ( when A-Rod Comes back ).

AJ Mass
  (11:21 AM)

He's been battling some soreness. I think he'll come around. But in a daily, you can certainly choose to sit with that depth.

Raph (Work)

Foster or Peterson #1 overall? You worried about the Vikings' O-line?

AJ Mass
  (11:22 AM)

No. My only concern in the first Mock (when I took Arian) we did was the "Ponder is the only QB" problem, which is no longer the case.

scottie (atl)

Love the book! It's gonna make great christmas presents too! Standard ESPN league, keep 2 out of A. Peterson, A. Foster, Ray Rice, Megatron. thanks!

AJ Mass
  (11:23 AM)

Pimp time: My top 2 are AP and Arian, so that's who I keep.

Kevin (FL)

Always take DEF and K last 2 rounds...right?

AJ Mass
  (11:24 AM)

I'd say to always take K in last round, but I have no problem taking Defense early if you don't like the available names at RB/WR when your turn comes around.

Daniel (Cleveland)

More Baseball Please!Mitch Moreland -- what do you expect ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:26 AM)

Not a lot... I'd rather have Kotchman, to give you some idea.

Shawn (Michigan)

12 man PPR-10th pick....Mccoy, Roddy, Mojo, or Megatron??

AJ Mass
  (11:27 AM)

I'd take MJD and then hope Megatron was still there on the turnaround.

Jay (Chicago)

12 team PPR league...I'm slotted in at the 12 and the 13th pick. Would you go Andre Johnson and Roddy White back to back? Done a couple of mock drafts and they've been falling to those spots. Thanks!

AJ Mass
  (11:28 AM)

If there's no elite RB there, and Vick is also gone, then why not get two top WR?

Billy Bob (Fort Madison, WI)

AJ, where are you taking a QB in your draft this year? Some experts say to grab one early, others say wait.

AJ Mass
  (11:30 AM)

Depends on my slot. I go RB in Round 1 early, but at back end, I might grab Vick or Rodgers. If not, then I am waiting until Round 5 or so at the earliest.

Shawn (Michigan)

Is Stafford a top 10 fantasy QB with only health issues holding him back??

AJ Mass
  (11:32 AM)

I wrote as much in the DET 32Q. If he plays a full 16-game schedule, then he's certainly a No. 1 QB in a 12-team league. But it's too big an *if* to go all-in.

Bx Sci Guy (lunch room)

Baseball! Baseball! Still in the baseball hunt! Goldschmidt or Blanks to replace Youkilis?

AJ Mass
  (11:33 AM)

Blanks isn't exactly the paragon of health himself - I'm rating this answer PG.

Scott (Boston, MA)

Given Brady's year last year, with a year removed from surgery for Welker, 85, and the 2 tight end's being one year older, isn't it conceivable that Brady will actually be the #1 QB this year, making him a relative value at his ADP?

AJ Mass
  (11:36 AM)

Brady could well be No. 1, as could Peyton, Rivers and even Schaub. It's a tier, and that's why as long as they're all still on the board, I feel fine waiting to grab any of them. I think that's kind of why the ADP is what it is, because that's a common way to approach drafts.

Kevin (FL)

Is your book available for any eReaders?

AJ Mass
  (11:37 AM)

I've been told it will be, but the official release date was Wednesday, and so the focus right now is on the "hold in your hands" version.

Dean (DC)

Do you think you guys could do a mock auction? I've seen plenty of regular and PPR mocks, but I'd love to see how an expert's auction plays out.

AJ Mass
  (11:39 AM)

Voice your opinion...I believe the format for the next mock is "up for grabs" and reader input is being taken into consideration.

Matt (Atl)

Does your opinion for QBs change if the league is 6pts for passing TD? Meaning waiting until 5th round if you don't pick one up in the back end of round 1?

AJ Mass
  (11:40 AM)

Not really, because the tiers remain the same. That's the same reason I don't avoid RBs in a PPR-league just because WRs are suddenly more valuable. I compare apples to apples.

Scott (TX)

Maybe you've never used an e-reader. Tough to hold it in anything but your hands...

AJ Mass
  (11:41 AM)

Touche... but it does make autographing a copy a bit trickier!

Bill (NY)

Allen Craig starting in CF today for the redbirds. Looks like they will try and get him in the lineup more down the stretch. Worth a pick up in a deep league for a playoff bound team? His splits look nice!

AJ Mass
  (11:43 AM)

I like Craig, and he's definitely one of those *unsexy* role players who can tip the scales.

Paul (Philly)

Keeper question....keep Bradshaw with a 5th round pick or Josh Freeman with an 8th round pick...

AJ Mass
  (11:45 AM)

I'd keep Ahmad. Freeman can be reclaimed, and if not, there are guys like Bradford and Stafford that can be taken instead. Depth at RB to me is always preferred.

Shane (Los Angeles, CA)

Could you see a StL WR being a top-10 FFB receiver this year? What about Bradford as a top-10 FFB QB? I think McD to StL is one of the most underrated moves of the season. (No, Im not a Rams fan...Cards fan actually, and I hate having McD in StL!)

AJ Mass
  (11:47 AM)

Not top 10... I like Amendola best of the bunch, but as a No. 3 at the highest. Sam is in the 10-15 mix to be sure. Incidentally, I'll be on ESPN Radio in St. Louis with D'Marco Farr this afternoon!

Mitch (Rutland VT)

Just got the book have not started it yet but am looking forward to it.. que were you really Mr. Met

AJ Mass
  (11:48 AM)

A) Why would one make that up? B) The book is non-fiction. 100 percent. C) Thanks!

Abdullah (Atlanta)

With Big Papi hobbling around for at least another week, who should I start in his place: B.Boesch or J.Kubel?

AJ Mass
  (11:49 AM)

To sum up: AJ does like Brennan. AJ did not like Big Brother's Brendan.

Raph (Work)

What are the keys to winning H2H fantasy baseball playoffs? Seems like a crapshoot to me.

AJ Mass
  (11:51 AM)

Generally speaking, it is. That's why I prefer roto for baseball. It's such a long season that I hate for the title to hinge on Pitcher X started twice and Pitcher Y went once.

Bob (Vermont)

I know I'm not the only one trolling for a Hanley replacement? Who you taking? Betancourt, Furcal, Renteria, Pennington or Bartlett?

AJ Mass
  (11:52 AM)

Yuni for me.

Dave (Va)

When do you think we should get some news on Cuddyer?

AJ Mass
  (11:54 AM)

Got an epidural and the hope is he'll play this weekend. Time will have to tell.

Bob (Baltimore)

Time to drop Trevor Cahill and Gaby Sanchez?

AJ Mass
  (11:56 AM)

Who is taking their place? Even when a player is frustrating you, it's only right to drop if there's a better option. And similarly, even a player is doing well, you may want to drop him to get a better option if the opportunity presents itself.

Matt (Boise)

Who are your fantasy MVP and Cy Young winners?

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

As of today, Justin and Doc for Cy. Jacoby and Kemp for MVP -- Curtis G is hot on Ells' heels.

Pat (NJ)

You still taking AP number 1 in PPR?

AJ Mass
  (11:58 AM)

No, in PPR I go with Foster, but I only drop AP to 2.

Patrick (Chicago)

Do you like this rule for H2H playoffs, the higher ranked team starts with x number of wins, where x is the difference in seed. Thus 1 vs. 4, 1 starts with a 3-0 lead.

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

I'd have to take a look at what the *right* home field advantage is, but the concept is a good one. In my football leagues, I always give some HFA points to the higher seed until the title game.

Raph (Work)

Do you think Fantasy Football h2h playoffs is less of a crapshoot than baseball's? how so?

AJ Mass
  (12:01 PM)

While you never have any control over the outcome, at least in football, we're talking one game per player per playoff matchup - and no streaming to further muck up the "fairness."

AJ Mass
  (12:02 PM)

That's the time... thanks to all for your Q's. Please do take a look at "How Fantasy Sports Explains the World" -- I think you'll enjoy. I'm on Twitter for those Q's I couldn't get to. Until the next time...good luck, and may the odds be EVER in your favor!
